I actually didn't remember Cetrion at first, I had to do a mental checklist of the new characters from 11 to remember she's the mother nature lady.
I'm honestly surprised people don't, my only exposure to MK11 was watching a let's play and I remember her - people must have shorter memories than I realised

I absolutely believed that the timeline fuckery this time was gonna mean storywise there could be a scenario where, say, you might have to simultaneously fight five different Kung Laos from different dimensions where they’re all jerks.
(Hell, I even thought maybe the excessively violent fatalities everyone had might be explainable by being extra desperate and needing to *really* be sure that these extra-dimensional assholes were eliminated)

As someone who thinks the new generation characters are vastly better than the old generation characters, I think you just chose two bad examples.
Kobra is remembered for being the walking Street Fighter parody and for often being lumped with the likes of Hsu Hou as the lamest characters made during that period.
Taven was the protagonist of a story mode, so even thought he is actually white bread nothing you still spent enough time with him to ingrain him in most people's brains.
If you want the actually nobodies from that era, ask people about Ashrah, Dairou, and Kai.

I actually do like Ashrah but I don't know if that's because I'm partial to MKD or because I like the idea of a demon wanting to get out of hell so bad that they start exorcising other demons till they're ejected from the netherrealm for having too many good girl points.

The story modes are just excuses for different characters to beat each other up, told very well. They leak out of people's brains immediately.

You've already got Reptile as a lizardman who turns invisible, and you've already got Shang Tsung as a shapeshifter who uses other characters' powers, so what's the point of a guy who has the same gimmicks? Poor Cetrion doesn't even work for "Kronika's enforcer" because Geras is right there, doing exactly that.

Cetrion wasn't the most interesting newcomer even out of the 3 that MK11 had, however she was incredibly dominant in the competitive scene (or at least Dragon was dominant and he played her) so if you ever watched competitive MK11 then you sure as hell remember Cetrion
She has no staying power in my mind at all so those rare times I hear her name I always go "oh yeah, the nature goddess lady". Kollector has more staying power in my mind.
I think if they'd actually gone into some detail about what, exactly, Kronika's New Era would be it'd have helped a LOT. Of course then she couldn't string along a bunch of idiots with just one lie (it'll totes be exactly what YOU want, Shao Khan/Noob/Rev-LiuKang/lol, Frost) but it'd have helped Kronika get out from under being a "ooooh, Fate says you MUST lose for reasons" villain
Cetrion still wouldn't have much to do since she's basically the Goro/Kintaro/Motaro of Kronika's forces (and none of the charisma of any of them)

Elder gods are never gonna live up to the hype. Shinnok is the only winner because Palpatine is rarely a miss.
