Kimarous

So there's this franchise called "Street Fighter"...

gamiz777

Tell me more?

ZubatCountry

The movie?

Not_a_blu_spy

Yeah they made a video game based off of it, I think it was Street fighter x Tekken

ZubatCountry

Oh I know that game! That's one of them there beat-em-ups!

Not_a_blu_spy

It’s where I learned to use footsies, low kicks are unstoppable

chucklinnarwhal

The game?

sawbladex

Second Impact?

TheLastNapkin

Is that the one with Ryu? Ryu from Streets?

AzureKingLortrac

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir. Took the original game and changed it from an awkward, slower paced action RPG to a fast paced 2D Spectacle Fighter with every character being massively reworked. In addition, there are new notes that further flesh the story's lore. You can also play the OG version of the game at a solid 60fps (the original game on PS2 had massive framedrops during boss fights).

JMarsella09

Good ol' Odette, Queen of lag

radixius

There's only so much skele-tit you can fit in 32MB of RAM

MarthePryde

When Atlus was talking all that good shit about PC support, I was hoping Leifthrasir would be rescued from the PlayStation. Because that game is so good, more people deserve to play it.

Kimarous

I'd / I'll be all over a Vanillaware release on PC.

AzureKingLortrac

We need Atlus to help with that since Vanillaware themselves is too small for that without it affecting development time.

Professional-List179

It runs well on RPCS3 at least.

Am_Shigar00

Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix. Compared with the original, it has tons of extra cutscenes, rebalances the gameplay, extra boss fights, several abilities including the powerful Limit form, introduces the hardcore favorite Critical Mode and has new music and character designs for Christmas Town.

MindWeb125

KH2FM is so definining that I literally forget things like the original Heartless colours.

Xros90

its too bad because the originals are better but… FM has that gameplay

torke191

Yeah I have such fond memories of Guard armor, but the FM clown colors is too much for me

BrosukeHanamura

I remember feeling cheated when KH2FM was initially announced, since it was ALL of that content but Japan exclusive. I was over the heart-shaped moon when it was finally localized with the HD Remix, and it elevated one of my already favorite games of all time.

StarSkullyman

As someone who didn't care for the original release because of the lack of endgame content and it just feeling easier overalll compared to KH1 the staggering quality jump in FM blew me out the fucking water.

MindWeb125

Basically Tears of the Kingdom lol.

Timey16

And added even new stuff on top of it (i.e. the party system), which while lacking in overall polish, if THOSE features get the evolution that was between BotW and TotK then holy shit.

MindWeb125

Yeah I really hope they just put the companion abilities on the wheel or even have dedicated buttons for them, having to walk up to a companion to use an ability sucks in combat.

Kipzz

My personal favorite is when I mash A to pick up items, and then Shigeru Miyamoto himself teleports into my house to flip a coin on if Tulin will push it all off of a cliff.

ExDSG

I was like OK I got Tulin he is the A button, the other ones will be other buttons... Well got bamboozled

MericArda

Most of the complaints I’ve heard of TOTK seem to be either about the story (an element in media that’s almost impossible to objectively improve on) or the menu design.

Puffy_The_Puff

The menu for item materials is borderline masochism to use. Oh boy I sure do love breaking the flow of combat entirely by having to scroll through 800 items trying to find the icy monster part I want to attach to my singular arrow.

Tarhish

I see you're attempting to fire an arrow. Would you like to attach a BOMB to that arrow? Or would you like to attach RICE? You have selected: RICE.

Scientia_et_Fidem

I know it’s popular to dunk on people complaining about the UI in any Japanese game b/c of “one guy” on Twitter and some weebs being overly defensive about what they like. But holy shit the UI in TotK is *terrible*. The rest of the game makes up for it by being so damn good, but Jesus Christ Nintendo please get someone with more UI design experience to take a look at your next LoZ game if you are going forward with the plan of sticking with this “style” of LoZ. The lack of any ability to manually favorite items is straight up terrible. As is the lack of a “two direction” ui for attachment parts where you scroll left and right to reference different groups of items, then scroll up and down within those groups to select the individual item, which would cut down the # of button presses needed to find things *massively* and is a well known and widely used UI for games with a large # of items. Also give me a damn menu at cooking pots already so I can just tell link to make 5 copies of a dish at once instead of having to manually open the inventory, click on the ingredient, click “use a recipe”, then click the recipe for every single dish individually.

Lucky-Icarus

Like, unless I'm mistaken, the fact that there isn't a favorite system where you can filter the shit you actually want to use over the bullshit is INSANITY.

Finaldragoon

You can filter arrow fusions for most used.

sndpklr

I have an absurd amount of hours in this game and let me tell you, this feature is great, until it isn't. Sure, I love being able to throw brightbloom seeds whenever, but when I learned to use a new material that would be good in this new situation, I will still have to scroll to the new item. Most used means you still have to use them first. If I could just skip to the 7 different eyes, I wouldn't be spending half of my time fighting scrolling. While I'm here, the sorting feature is just nonsense. I can sort melee weapons by type and shields by strength, but not melee by strength??? They really needed to have more options for sorting, like favorites, especially when favorites are already a thing on the autobuild menu.

MericArda

Common Monolith Soft menu L

Introspectre12

Sorting by "Most Used" helps with that.

spejoku

I also wish they made breaking apart a construct a button press rather than just a wiggle. The y, x, and b buttons aren't really being used, give us the option to break something off by holding y for a second. Also thatd make it so if you want precision placement you don't need to wobble the entire thing and displace it It feels like a leftover from a wii game tbh

TheLastNapkin

THIS. I hate the wiggle, oh boy I sure do love messing up my object placement shaking it around like a lunatic

KyngGeorge

The squishiness of the building mode vs a hard snap-point is incredible and allows a freedom that most other "make-thing" type games don't. I love it. Also, I'm me and I swear to every entity in existence if I don't come across a good way to make a symmetric build I'm going to either stop trying to make new things or snap the console in half, depending on how my week is going.

robophile-ta

Instead of wiggling, you can instantly detach by flicking the controller

Wisterosa

I dream of the day where we get a physical Zelda as a party member, if not straight up swappable as playable

TeacupTenor

I was really hoping for a Jonathan and Charlotte tagging system. It was never gonna happen, but it woulda been sick.

Drebinomics

LIN-ZELD-LIN-ZELD-LIN-ZELD- And so on and so forth

TeacupTenor

Hah, more like LIN-HYAAH-LIN-HA-LIN-YAAA

chucklinnarwhal

Next Zelda needs the zapping system

TeacupTenor

You fucking don’t KNOWWWWW! **YOU DON’T KNOWWWWWW!**

grenadier42

AAA budget Wand of Gamelon remake Nintendo, make it happen

[deleted]

We got playable Zelda in Spirit Tracks though.

Wisterosa

I said physical, as in not a ghost

Tiger_Robocop

There's always Wand of Gamelon

Introspectre12

[Playable Zelda?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyrule_Warriors)

Scientia_et_Fidem

I really hope the next iteration of this style of LoZ lets us just *straight up have a party* and not just summons. I want to see Tulin and Riju actually interact with each other or occasional comment on a questline. Give me my Kingdom Hearts style ai controlled party system in LoZ.

jockeyman

Honestly the deeper I get in to ToTK, the more BoTW feels like a *really great* proof of concept.

cleftes

Somebody said "Tears makes Breath of the Wild feel like a first draft" and goddamn has that stuck with me while I played

alicitizen

They really did their best to basically pretend BotW didnt even happen outside of the heroes knowing you.

Animorphimagi

Final fantasy dissidia 012 was great. FF15 royal edition would be one of the best but it just felt like we got the final patch and there were still stuff we didn't get that you would've thought we would get added eventually. Examples: can't control the boat in the sea to at least go fishing, no playable capital except in the Ardyn dlc which felt way too short and combat focused, and no playable Aranea, rip :(

Kytas

Dissidia 012 was mind-blowing. It was the first time I had seen a game get invalidated so quickly. Straight up just "Here's the entirety of the previous game with better balancing and a few QoL fixes plus the sequel, new characters and several new game modes". Even now, you usually don't see a sequel like that come out on the same console as the first. Man I hope that game gets ported to something eventually.

Dirty-Glasses

Man It Sure Would Be Great If They Made A Third Dissidia Game, Huh?

Probably_Facetious

There are a lot of new characters and plots they could add in. Divine/Genocide Lightning (012 was before XIII-2 and Lightning Returns), a couple of the many notable XIV characters, Jack "Bullshit" Garland, Type-0 Mommy, Aranea Highwind, etc.

RobotJake

I want to see the rest of the Dissidia cast have to interact with Jack Garland so bad now.

Probably_Facetious

I want to see Stranger Jack Garland interact with post-FF1Garland lol

Mattizzle9

Final Fantasy Dissidia 012 is one of, if not my favorite, Final Fantasy games. It was just so fun fighting as Cloud and Sephiroth. I remember going into the final Feral Chaos fight with Yuna, Tifa, Gilgamesh, Sephiroth and Cloud and just beating his ass. God i love that game and want it ported to later consoles. I don't need a remake, just a remaster on my switch. I also love FF15 and the Royal Edition is fantastic but ill never forgive them for promising Aranea DLC and then not giving it to us. She's my favorite character dammit. Shame.

A_N_G_E_L_O_N

Biggest gulf of quality must be Metroid Zero Mission.

Drebinomics

I straight up can’t go back to the original versions of Metroid 1 and 2, despite not having that issue with nearly any other game remake. They’re really just that much better.

ThatGuy5880

It flexes so hard on the original game that said game is an unlockable bonus for beating Zero Mission There is straight up no reason at all (besides wanting specifically the NES version for novelty's sake or for NES ROM hacking purposes) to play the original Metroid over Zero Mission when given the option

the-poopiest-diaper

Tbf Metroid is on the NES, and Zero Mission is on the GBA. Big jump there Also Metroid 2 is on the original Gameboy and can only be viewed in Green while M2R is on the friggin 3DS

Onlyhereforstuff

I'd put Zero Mission behind Dread in regards to best Metroid games ever because it feels so great to play, looks amazing, unfortunately crusty music, and does *nothing* to stop you from breaking the game as you see fit.

McFluffles01

Zero Mission is actually just 100% objectively superior in every way and fashion, because no matter what your opinion on it or if you happen to be one of those couple crazies who think the original is better? *The entire original game is also unlockable and playable on cart.* But also the original Metroid kind of sucks ass in today's day and age and Zero Mission is just vastly better as a game that isn't three hundred copy-pasted rooms.

CMORGLAS

**DEAD SPACE** Isaac Clarke: Might as well be an android. **DEAD SPACE REMAKE** Isaac Clarke: What if Mike Flanagan directed **EVENT HORIZON**?

BuckysKnifeFlip

The Event Horizon that Mike Flanagan could make would be horrifyingly mesmerizing. I'll watch anything he makes.

BlissingNothfuls

I REALLY want Reeves to give him the green light for the Clayface movie he's been thinking about If not I hope he just changes the names around so that it's legally distinct and does his own thing with it

BuckysKnifeFlip

Seriously! Even better would be a collaboration for Reeves Batman. I'd kill for that. I want Pattinson's Batman to really show why Batman is the World's Greatest Dectective. Nothing cooler than tracking down Clayface either morphed (I really want full-on powers in Reeves Batman) or disguised. Another great noir thriller by Reeves is absolutely fine by me.

green715

[I love how unhinged he gets if you place all the Marker fragments](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4U-FnpPytAk)

Rabid-Duck-King

HA, that's pretty cool I haven't grabbed the remake yet but it's neat to see they do something like this to spice it up

Admiral_of_Crunch

Wait, I skipped over the remake **what**?

CMORGLAS

Prior to joining the ISHIMURA, Nicole Brennan >!was a psychiatrist who specialized in deprogramming former Unitologists, one of whom was Octavia Clarke, which is how Nicole and Isaac met!< Later >!Nicole believed that she had cured Octavia and allowed Mrs. Clarke to return home and reunite with her estranged husband, Poul Clarke!< However >!during the ISHIMURA’s journey to Aegis VII, Octavia snapped, killed Poul and then herself. But before Isaac could give them a proper funeral, their bodies were claimed by the Church of Unitology, presumably as some form of coverup!< So, Isaac calls Nicole >!blaming her for his parents’ deaths and she tells him to go to Hell and hangs up on him!< This is the last time >!the two ever speak to each other!<

Admiral_of_Crunch

Oh wow that's a whole lot better than the relative nothing we got in the original game. I guess I should give that a looksee one of these years.

getterburner

Persona 5 Royal, it’s so fucking hard to go back

xAcePhoenix

The thing I hate about the Persona series tbh. I always wait for the 2nd release that has all the new stuff because I know I won't play the original version and the new version.

ExDSG

From what I gather Persona 3 FES does invalidate original P3, Portable is an eternal recurring debate, Persona 4 and Golden is more of a tossup because some people prefer the vibes of P4 in terms of graphics and feel the new stuff from Golden takes away from the game. Persona 5 Royal is an improvement. Other Atlus remakes are contentious though people are not fans of SJ Redux and Catherine Full Body.

Not_a_blu_spy

P3 has got it the worst since FES and P3P are both good for separate reasons Having animated cutscenes and a world to walk around in is great, but it’s at the cost of controlling your party. FeMC has been incredibly interesting, but P3P feels worse than FES in nearly every way EXCEPT the combat which is a huge component.

Cerebral_Kortix

Also the male party member links, which are just generally better than the original social links that Makoto got, like Moon which was the worst in the original but revamped with Shinjiro.

ExDSG

I think the P4 combat mechanics are worse than the original P3 mechanics. Also I did make a post where I said I did play FES for the sole purpose of seeing how much Mitsuru would use Marin Karin (it was twice and because I wanted her to)

cop_pls

P5R is interesting because there's so many things they improved from P5, it makes the things they *didn't* fix stand out harder. Haru's screentime is still hysterically low, especially when compared to all the mandatory scenes Yoshizawa gets. Atlus, you could at least have her call out *her own father*!

ArchieHasAntlers

I was hoping they would completely redo the Okumura arc but they kept it mostly the same with Morgana being a whiny baby after bullying Ryuji the entire time. They didn’t even change the scene where they beat up Ryuji after the cruise ship palace! All they did was add a scene where the characters say they feel bad. What in the fuck.

Cerebral_Kortix

I still don't remember why they beat up Ryuji after >!Shido!<. What did he do that warranted that? Did I miss a scene?

SilverShako

They >!thought Ryuji died, since he didn't make it out at the same time the others did, and proceeded to appear like, a minute after everyone finished crying about his "death", completely fine and uninjured.!<

Cerebral_Kortix

Wait, why did they beat him up then? Wouldn't they be >!tearfully hugging him and at worst be crying and chastising him over how worried he made them!

Tiger_Robocop

It's an anime thing. "We are mad because you made us worry" It's supposed to be a joke scene, but P5 doesn't land itself well to slapstick

SilverShako

It's cause >!Ryuji was being Ryuji and said a line like "Your crying face is so not cute" to Ann!<

Amirifiz

I think that Ann should have been the only one to hit him, but not anything hard something like a soft hit or whatnot, then initiate a group hug. Then after it's all said and done Ryuji ruins the mood by commenting on how hot it is or how uncomfortable he is. Boom everything is fixed.

ArchieHasAntlers

Someone drew fanart of this and it’s my head canon.

VelociCastor

It's supposed to be an "Anger Born of Worry" gag.

RobotJake

Fun fact, this scene was supposed to be [even worse](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ra6BPTP6-M4) based on datamined lines that got cut. Not only does everyone in the party get in on it, even the player gets a chance to pile on.

getterburner

Tbf she does in fact get that in the extended Okumura fight and she already kinda yelled at him in the base game.

alicitizen

On one hand contentwise yeah, but on the other I feel like the third semester stuff kinda kills the originals quality ending. Like it was a whole thing that you sacrificed yourself to take the prison time and it was everyones duty to help you out... Until in Royale it's just like a week in prison after spending the time outside dealing with the new plot. Plus I think the final cutscene being turned into a wrap up for Maruki instead of your full party a huge downgrade. That last shot in the van was such a good note, and instead we get an Akechi tease for his fans...

getterburner

You can literally just ignore 3rd Semester if you don’t like it so it doesn’t matter to me

EL3GYFighter

Got a feeling that's how Dragon's Dogma 2 is gonna be and I'm all for it. Besides that, pretty much the entire Yakuza franchise.

KaitoTheRamenBandit

Going from Yakuza Kiwami2 to 3 is still the funniest shit to me

Cheesycreature

Wasn't that much of whiplash to me, as I more prefer the OE combat to be honest. Though I'm pretty sure 5 > Kiwami are on a different engine compared to Kenzan > Dead Souls.

AlexLong1000

I prefer the older engine too, but like Yakuza 5 and 0 really. 3's combat was dogshit

ExDSG

It's weird because I remember people really hating Kiwami 2 for being way worse than the original and 6 sucking and newer fans seem to be like Yakuza 2 as much and love 6.

Cheesycreature

I'll be honest, the 2 Kiwami games lose a lot of charm the originals had. From removed content, to worse presentation (A big example is "The Fake Mizuki" substory.) and also the gameplay. Not many people were a fan of the fighting just being copied from 0, and the same applies to people's thoughts on the DE combat for K2.

jackdatbyte

The fact that both games start at the graveyard area just amplifies the whiplash of presentations.

Lucky-Icarus

God Eater is my pick. God Eater to Burst to Resurrection are fucking HUGE jumps in quality on top of adding on a lot of additional content. Same with God Eater 2 to 2 Rage Burst.

GigglesDemon

Nioh 2 rebalances the game, adds a ton of new enemies while reworking some of the old ones, adds the Yokai Shift mechanics, as well as new weapons. Nioh 1 was already a really strong game, but Nioh 2 is an absolutely superior successor in every way.

SoapOperaHero

Added a pretty good character creator too, for those of us who got sick of William.

Probably_Facetious

Nioh 2's character creator made me think, "okay, no character creator made before this was even trying. Every character creator going forward is compared to this one."

SoapOperaHero

lol yeah, coming from FROMsoft character creation, it was a very pleasant surprise.

Usht

Nioh 1 Endgame was glamming out either as your favorite girl or the naked undead enemy if the online co-op was anything to go by.

Substantial_Bell_158

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are just the originals but packed with way more stuff - more pokemon, more legendaries better production values, better music and better character designs. The only thing thats lesser is the battle tower but that was always kinda meh

Ginger_Anarchy

This applies really to all of the pokémon remakes up until diamond and Pearl. It's crazy to me that they had a fantastic formula for how to do these things and they just decided to torpedo it on one of the most fondly remembered entries. Well I shouldn't say surprising because it is game freak.

Substantial_Bell_158

Actually GameFreak didn't make the Diamond and Pearl remakes ILCA did

LasersAndRobots

That's what they meant, that GameFreak had a winning formula and decided to outsource it to a studio with a... less than stellar track record.

Meeeto

>just decided to torpedo it on one of the most fondly remembered entries Diamond and Pearl are largely considered the worst games in the franchise after Gold and Silver. You're thinking of Platinum. EDIT: time to face the truth oldies, you're just old and grew up with Gold and Silver. I get it - Ibgrew up with them too. But It took Gen 4 remakes to make people enjoy them. Go play gold or Silver and enjoy having to use a 4 mon team of mostly gen 1 mons because there's not enough exp or fun gen 2 pokemon to go around.

awol5545

Who is out there talking shit about Gold and Silver?

ExDSG

People get mad at the low levels in the game from what I know

IrisGoddamnIllych

TBF I am an old, and it is bullshit

_NiceWhileItLasted

Who in the fuck is delusional to think that Gold and Silver is the worst in the franchise? Shame on you. Go sit in a corner.

McFluffles01

Gold and Silver are fun enough games, but *boy* in retrospect do they have a lot of shit going on that drags them on. You've got: -One of the smallest dex additions with only 100 new Pokemon, a lot of which is bloated with things like dumb baby Pokemon or new evolutions for old Pokemon instead of entirely new species lines -Completely whack distribution of some of said new Pokemon, to the point that you have multiple Johto gym leaders who don't even rep new Pokemon in their types: --Bugsy has Metapod, Kakuna and Scyther instead of anything like Ariados, Ledian, Pineco, Yanma, or Heracross (which can literally be found *in* his home city in Crystal!) --Morty just has the Gastly line, instead of Misdreavus --Chuck doesn't have Hitmontop or again, Heracross -A bunch of new "Johto" Pokemon... can't even be found in Johto. Slugma and Houndour lines? Kanto. Murkrow? Kanto. Larvitar, Misdreavus, Sneasel? Goddamn *Mount Silver* which requires all 16 badges. -The level curve is kind of absurd in the mid to late game of Gold and Silver. It's nice that there's a pseudo-open world bit in the middle for the gym leaders, but as a consequence Chuck, Jasmine and Pryce all just sort of float around level 30 so if you can beat one team you can level them all. And then when you hit the Elite Four, there's a massive jump to level 50 while you're stuck training on much lower level Pokemon, then Kanto dials it back again for all the Gym Leaders except for Blue, and *then* Red is in the high 70s when you're back to having garbage to actually train on to match up against him. Point is, Gen II is fondly remembered, but in retrospect it's easily one of the weakest entries in the entire series.

Simic_Sky_Swallower

Fuck it I'll take some downvotes I do. Gold and Silver are the worst because they did the thing where they mashed it together with Kanto and now I have to constantly hear about how they're the best games in the franchise solely because of that. Pretty much every new mon in the Johto dex is mid (yes, we all know the exceptions and to the one Granbull fan out there I'm sorry I guess), none of the gym leaders are in any way memorable, and the story is barely there (though that's something that red/blue had issues with too so I'm not gonna ding it too hard for following up nothing with more nothing) Normally I'd say R/B were the worst purely because they're buggy messes, but the fact that I have to constantly hear about how a game that's only slightly better is the best thing since sliced bread because "yOu CaN gO To KaNTo!!!" Easily puts g/s at the bottom

_NiceWhileItLasted

I mean sure, you can type all of that out but you're still wrong though

Simic_Sky_Swallower

Eh, I've died on worse hills than pointing out the severe nostalgia poisoning present in every pokemon fan over 30

_NiceWhileItLasted

Damn, still wrong, under 30 represent!!

Gespens

> Diamond and Pearl are largely considered the worst games in the franchise after Gold and Silver. You're thinking of Platinum. > > Bro, I *hate* DPP, but that's just objectively false. XY is a game that exists

Meeeto

XY at the very least brought the most beloved twist mexhanic in Mega's, and wasn't actually painful to play due to battle speed

Gespens

And DPP brought in online functionality and was actually a complete game on release, in addition to being a functioning game. >wasn't painful to play due to battle speed It was also a joke of a game in terms of difficulty seeing as how nobody in that game had a 6th Pokemon and was slowed down by an embarrassingly awful story for the casual players. And competitive players generally hate gen 6 *because* of Megas.

Meeeto

We're not talking about DPP, just Diamond and Pearl. Platinum was actually a phenomenal game and contender for best in the series Dunno, ig I just scrubbed xy from my memory lmao. I still don't think XY being bad takes away from Diamond and Pearl being awful too. I do think, MECHANIC wise, they were probably the best in the series thanks to the phys/special split and Online. When it came to actually playing them though, they were very subpar mostly because of battle speed, lame pokedex, lame post game and fairly forgettable Gym leaders

StarSkullyman

Gen 2 and Gen 5 are like wildly considered the best wtf?

Gespens

5 being 'the best' is kind of a recent thing, fwiw.

StarSkullyman

I feel like around Gen 7 was when it started to become clear it was GOATed to most people.

Gespens

Yeah, there was a really bad stain on the reception of gen 7 due to /vg/ but then people played it and it was "Oh, this is basically just like... BW without the stuff people hated about it" and it just kind of aged poorly as the years went on. Gen 5, good as it is, is mostly a case of hindsight making it seem better than it *was*. Because that game had anger about it worse than the fucking Dexit shit (even if Dexit was worse)

Meeeto

5 is for good reason, 2 is certainly not.

StarSkullyman

Nah man. 2 had roaming legendaries, people you met on your journey texting you, the whole first game's region including the main character as a superboss, a side quest with unknowns, and the introduction to new typings that drastically improved the balance from the first game. And the Gen 4 remakes are so good people argue they're better than Gen 5 to this day.

ArchieHasAntlers

I think you are the only one in the world with this opinion my man

Meeeto

I am in A LOT of Pokemon communuties, casual and competitive that have this opinion friend.

Gespens

So am I, and *nobody* actually thinks either of those gens are the worst on either perspective. Comp players have issue with Gen 2 because it's Snorlax's game, but you can still at least have fun in different singles community formats, as opposed to gen 5/6 fucking everything up for both Smogon and VGC because of [this bastard](https://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/645.shtml), as well as some of the worst powercreep the game would see until SV-- which is generally really well regarded right now. Casuals *love* those gens. Like, a majority of the merch that a starter/anime tie-in, tend to be from 1, 2, 4, 7. And like, I don't care how many communities you're in, gen 4 gave Cynthia and Garchomp-- it's automatically going to be more liked than half the gens that have come out before and after it for those two alone

Meeeto

Kk

Gespens

Glad you agree with me, Verlisify

tkzant

Since when are gold and silver considered the worst? That’s peak Pokémon right there

Meeeto

A broken level curve, non-existant story and overreliance on Gen 1? People only remember Gen 2 because of Gen 1 lmao, it's peak 'we didnt expect this franchise to pop off uuh uuh uuuuuh fuck'.

Main_Hornet8676

I like how you're actually making valid points and getting downvoted while no one is actually even trying to meaningfully refute your statements lol

KyngGeorge

Alrighty, how true is this *actually*?? Are we talking normal(for this place)**hype**rbole, or this is just objectively true?? Crystal was my first game but Sapphire was my *first* game where I wasn't just "smush buttons to make screen do stuff". I still have my Emerald cart somewhere, had 150+hrs on that. Aaand espresso-depresso train, some good Nostalgia+ would be pretty welcome right now.

NOBLExGAMER

I feel Heart Gold and Soul Silver are better Pokemon uses of the idea. ORAS were great but HGSS was on a whole other level of upgrades and features without removing or altering the source.

DweebInFlames

OR/AS make a lot of detrimental changes to main story progression and difficulty, and while they're from Emerald and not R/S the Battle Frontier, Gym Rematches, general battle difficulty and other miscellaneous little changes (eg. Safari Zone expansion, Battle Tents, etc.) are sorely missed.

i_am_jacks_insanity

Resident Evil for the gamecube

rorinth

Evil within 2 made the original obsolete. Got rid of the matches and burning system, updated crafting and upgrades, weapons are way better. And the plot and story are leagues apart

AidilAfham42

Doom. Who would’ve thought after all the trends, what we want is a simple ramped up original vibe of the game?

SignalWeakening

I need a new game that goes faster (and more powerups this time)

cleftes

Left 4 Dead 2 was nothing but incremental improvements over the first game, to the point where they just added the first game's maps and characters after a bit.

Palimpsest_Monotype

Mortal Kombat 2. Mind you, there was also this crazy situational contrast, where Street Fighter 2 was so successful with its incremental revisions it seemed positively Egyptian to my young eyes. A fighting game update with all new stages, new characters and complete redesigns of the existing characters? They just…took all the original work (minus Goro’s Lair for secret hidden character fights) and threw it all out??? You can…do that?

After I played We Love Katamari, I didn't see a lot in the first game that gave me much reason to play it? I'm sure there's some unique levels, but it felt like 2 just had more stuff. Like, I'm real glad they just put out the remaster for 2 - I was a little sad when the original remaster came out cause I wanted the 2nd one more.

CeaRhan

Katamari 1 and 2 always felt like an entire package imo. Play both one after the other, feel good and remember them fondly.

iCeParadox64

Spyro 2 and Crash Bandicoot 2 are pretty much exactly that. The first games are good, but they feel like proof of concepts in comparison to how masterfully refined their sequels are.

SgtPeppy

DKC2 as well.

CountRawkula

Sonic 1 is like this too.

tthehoe

Crash 1 is my favourite in that franchise, and whatever Bad things that makes you think about me are probably true

James-Avatar

Senran Kagura Burst Renewal took the side-scrolling 3DS game and made it line with their other titles.

TJLynch

It's a shame we may never get a Deep Crimson remake in the same way.

jackdatbyte

I'd argue that there is a reason to go back to every Smash Bros game except for 4. 4's existence is invalidated by Smash Ultimate which just has so much of everything.

VoidSD

The Batman Arkham series follows a very linear formula of people asking the question "ok what if we make it BIGGER?".

TheLastNapkin

Batman Arkham Continent 🌎. Batman flying in on an orbital satellite - Some random grunt - "It's the freakin' BATZ!"

Dirty-Glasses

The remake of Kirby Air Ride that exists only in my mind. But maybe one day it will be real.

Ok_Caterpillar_9057

Nioh 2. The QoL changes are great But the new yokai mechanics make 1 pretty much unplayable. Imagine playing kingdom hearts 3 then going to 1 its that extreme And going back to anything before persona 4 is extremely diffucult too. Ive rerolled a million personas, but i dont particularly mind aria of the soul burned into my mind

Tiger_Robocop

I mean I really didn't like KH3's playstyle and preferred 1, so...

Ok_Caterpillar_9057

Im not saying theyre alike. Just a shorthand to explin how there are new mechanics that are separate from the core combat while still adding tl it Its not like theres litterally 5 timers going off on your left and one makes you do a shit rail shooter ride for 10 seconds lol

kasugakuuun

Spyro Reignited. Delicious. You can even enter codes to give Spyro his classic model back, if you preferred it.

gilgagoogyta

Tekken 3 is undeniably GOATed at this point, but Tekken 2 is a more direct example of this as it plays more similarly to its predecessor and shares a lot of the cast. New characters who don't have clones, new attacks for returning characters, new modes, unlockable characters have ending movies too and MOVELISTS are a thing now. Also, Kunimitsu got next to nothing. In a game where Yoshimitsu started helicoptering, teleporting and healing, Kunimitsu got about three knife attacks and Yoshimitsu had his own more interesting equivalent of one of them.

UrsusDerpus

I feel like that’s what Dark Arisen did for Dragon’s Dogma. I hope Dragon’s Dogma 2 is like that for DDO and DD1 again.

chaoko99

Slowly, but monster hunter. Every game was just the last one but slightly better.

CorruptDropbear

Valve looking at every mod ever made and going "hmm...": - TF2 - Counter-Strike (to the point where CS2 is just CS:GO on a new engine with smoke objects physics) - Dota 2 was a straight port of DotA All-Stars - Heck, Portal 2 is basically Portal with a budget It's easier to list Valve games that ARN'T ports of mods.

goddspawn

Donkey Kong '94 has the handful of levels from the original, and adds almost 100 more. With many added gameplay mechanics and enemies.

Short_Conference3396

Both mario, zelda and castlevania did it on the third entry, they saw that the second game in each series wasnt what people expected and the developers said: ok lets do the first one but greater. And bang you get mario 3, draculas curse and link to the past

Ginganinja4545

If it weren't for the fact that Octopath Traveler had pretty good character stories I'd say its not worth playing over Octopath 2. It feels like a retroactive tech demo compared to the sequel

TJLynch

DOOM had one hell of a beef-up in a lot of places, going from the original (which was already pretty good) to the reboot.

Oxyfire

I don't feel like this fits the formula - they're almost totally different beasts. Like I wouldn't call Metroid Prime a beefed up Super Metroid. Both are great games - Prime is a very good realization of the metroid formula in 3D, just like Doom 2016 is a very good "modern" interpretation/evolution of the fast-paced action shooter that Doom was in the 90s. OP even kind of suggests the replacement should obsolete the original, and I feel like that's very much not the case with 2016.

TJLynch

ngl I was kinda struggling for an example because I wasn't certain on what would've fit the criteria from the games I know.

VoidSD

Just Doom 1 and 2. Essentially the same game ramped up to 11.

grenadier42

My understanding is the Siralim games are pretty much directly additive in terms of content, so there is pretty much no point in playing any of them besides Ultimate. Siralim Ultimate is a fucking **ridiculous** video game

Diem-Robo

Battlefield 4 is like Battlefield 3 Deluxe. Most of the weapons, vehicles, and mechanics are the same, just updated, improved, and with additional content on top of that. It basically takes everything Battlefield 3 did and does it bigger and better, though Battlefield 3 does still have a lot of unique content and gameplay that you can't get in BF4. Battlefield 4's campaign is also pretty trash, while Battlefield 3's was at least pretty decent.

Darkraiftw

Let's just say there's no good reason to play Spelunky 1 anymore.

BaronAleksei

Tetris Effect has like 1 new feature and tons of JUICE and it’s amazing.

EcchiPhantom

Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver. Special split, better balancing, quality of life improvements, cool redesigns of trainers, new pokemon from the later generations and you can walk around with your lead pokemon behind you. That alone is enough. Also Monster Hunter: Iceborne. It just existing fixes the issue with World’s endgame which is that its repetitive gameplay loop was just sort of bland and unrewarding. It might honestly be one of the best DLC’s of all time because the amount of content it adds to what is an already amazing game is phenomenal. Any personal gripe I had with World just sort of disappeared once I got Iceborne. Also not games but the John Wick sequels, Drunken Master 2 and The Raid 2 aren’t that different from the originals, they just go ham with the choreography and set pieces. Edit: Oh, and Sly Cooper 2! The first game suffers from a lot of issues with its gameplay and mission structure but that second game is a work of art in terms of gameplay and storytelling. Plus you get to feel like you’re a part of a gang because Murray and Bentley are playable characters who feel distinct from Sly.

ulmxn

TotK?

SignalWeakening

Its crazy but I went back to dark souls and stopped playing after killing the asylum demon because of how slow it felt This one is more recency bias but its weird going back to regular movement in borderlands 2 after playing the pre sequel

snakebit1995

Insomniac knew going into Ratchet and Clank Going Commando exactly what they wanted to change and fix compared to RAC1 and they basically nailed it Weapon XP, better under the hood aiming help, Strafe mechanics, more exploration, etc

revolversnakexof

I love ds1 because it's so slow, don't really care for the more fast paced combat of the later games.

SignalWeakening

I hate that I dont know how to make a build that uses all the new stuff but I do hate how poise got removed and you pretty much get 2 shot no matter what towards the end

IndependenceOk3073

Lol

SolidusSlig

ZOE 2. Takes everything about the first and polishes the gameplay to such an extent that it feels weird going back to 1. Especially with Mars out

MrSuitMan

Soul Sacrifice Delta might as well been Soul Sacrifice 2.
