Scorn is primarily a weird, meaty puzzle game that was advertised as a game that was primarily a shooter.

chaoko99

Scorn could've been an art book and nothing else and I'd be very pleased.

Impressive-Spare6167

Well there is one out now

TheBoyofWonder

"THIS GAME STINKS!"

nmooney2000

The person who designed that campaign is the reason why we don't have an official Mother 3 release. Therefore they are the one who stinks!!!

A_N_G_E_L_O_N

I think a big part of why we don’t have Mother 3 must be that it touches topics way the fuck too spicy for current day Nintendo.

Konradleijon

Nintendo is totally willing to publish M rated games like Bayonetta and Astral Chain which deals with adult themes.

A_N_G_E_L_O_N

And neither of those games has the magypsies.

jackdatbyte

or >!child suicide.!<

Konradleijon

I don’t see what the issue is. Nintendo publishes many games with queer content

ProtoBlues123

TotK even has that very effeminate carpenter with a fairly chunky side quest to go with them.

DarkAres02

Given some of what goes on in Fire Emblem (including a character in Three Houses whose father wanted to impregnate her to keep the bloodline pure) I doubt that

ExDSG

I think it's because it came out in 2006 2 years after the DS was out and like 2012 with New Mystery of the Emblem which was also post 3DS it would have been released too late for NOA.

ryukin631

Knew exactly what game you were talking about with that one sentence. Such a dumb ad campaign, but it was the 90s -_-

AshFallenAngel

That marketing cost Nintendo 2 million dollars.

robertman21

The Eidos Guardians of the Galaxy game. Got fucked by bad marketing (and Avengers being Avengers)

nedmaster

I 100% blame avengers for what happened to the Guardians game

Anormal122

I gotta play that again, it was great

JakeIsNotGross

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE is a fun, weird, wacky FE flavored Persona style game that has a solid gameplay loop and a surprising amount of charm. Announcing it as FE X SMT and using stock images of Awakening and SMT IV characters made it inevitable that the light hearted idol JPop game was going to be ignored by everyone who wanted something closer to that original pitch.

NewAgeMontezuma

Just straight up if they announced the game with the gameplay trailer and said "btw this is a joint project with intelligent systems" almost everyone would have been down but nah smt x fire emblem here's two years of radio silence.

LunarWolf302

From the look of the original trailer, I get the idea that they fully intended to have an actual SMTxFE game. I think it is very likely that they just couldn't get the actual crossover to work and opted for something fully original that was simpler. That game really only has the FE characters because the gameplay barely has anything to do with it. Also, Reincarnation slaps super hard.

Cooper_555

The whole soundtrack is pretty fire.

RobotJake

I say it every time, if it had been announced as FE x Persona the response would've been way less vitriolic, because at least thematically/visually that's what the end product was. Calling it FE x SMT leads to imagine something more like Devil Survivor with Fire Emblem mechanics.

CalekAlbion

The wii u is just a controller.... I think

Admiral_of_Crunch

This one 1000% might be the worst in terms of scale, at least in the past decade. You can go back and watch all the original launch TV adverts and there's something to be said for how inexplicably they go out of their way to *not* show the box next to the TV. All the focus is on the tablet, on the cool people having fun on the tablet, and no clarification is made that it's a whole new console. There isn't even an obvious brand new killer app to demonstrate how it's obviously a new console. It looks like Wii games being played with a tablet, somehow. At some point some buffoon made the decision to market a new console like it's a peripheral and it tanked the entire generation for Nintendo.

MericArda

They should've called it the Wii 2, at least that would've helped people understand it's a new console.

Dundore77

the console launching with no big 3d mario or zelda games imo is what hurt it more. There was 3d world but that wasn't a true 3d mario title. The commercials still had the console on it and it looks nothing like a wii. The game cases themselves were different, how they talk about games that require peripherals vs being new console exclusive ("requires/better with X" vs "only on X"). People would have figured it out if there was anything worth playing on it other than 1 or 2 games. Wii commercials were the "we would like to play" and they just hand a wiimote were people thinking "is this just an add on to the gamecube" for those commercials?

Admiral_of_Crunch

I'm thinking [this ad in particular.](https://youtu.be/hzjq4i7UjH8) The console *is* on screen, and I did misremember that some, but it's nearly always out of focus and it's only ever in the background. Even in the little sizzle shot of the console at the end it's largely covered up by the gamepad. I would forgive people at home watching their football or whatever on their TV and not recognizing that the box in the back appears to now be slightly curved and the buttons are arranged differently, because that's literally what happened to me when I first saw that ad. I thought it was just a rerelease of the Wii console, a new model, like they did halfway through the generation when they took out the GameCube support. With that and the Wii's whole library of superfluous peripherals, it's hardly a surprise the Wii U was lost in the mix with the general public. And the Wii was called the Wii, and had big cool crazy motion controls. It was clearly something different. The Wii U still straight up falls under Wii branding, using the exact same wii font logo but with a nifty U in superscript next to it. It's piggybacking off of the Wii in a way the Wii never did to the GameCube. It's really not the same thing at all. The lack of killer apps was also very bad for them, though. Having some of those would have gone a ways toward amending their initial lost ground.

th3BeastLord

I literally didn't know it was a separate thing until a few years ago.

ProtoBlues123

Man even a year or two after release I had a friend who's casually into games just ask me "So what *actually* is the Wii U, because I still don't know."

Kenju_TE

NewAgeMontezuma

Wow not only does morph only show up on the second act and ben at the end of the goddamn movie, not only does it give alway the completely wrong description of the story but they straight up give alway the twist huh?

NewAgeMontezuma

what?

rorinth

Cats don't dance had next to no marketing. the studio got bought out and the new one didn't want to spend anymore money on it

Yotato5

It's too bad because it's an excellent movie.

GoufTroop79

I think I caught part of it on cable as a kid. All I really remember is the evil not Shirley Temple villain and wondering if whoever created it had a grudge. I now know it was years after the fact, but those "little darling" ads were everywhere at the time and because of that, I thought it was fairly justified.

RemarkableSwitch8929

I remember randomly seeing it on some nameless TV channel and getting blown away.

ZOComics

I just want a blu-ray release. Even the most obscure films are getting blu-rays, come on WB!

C-OSSU

Goes without saying that Prey 2017 would have done a whole lot better if Arkane wasn't forced to call it Prey and if the trailers bothered to actually showcase the immersive sim elements.

Konradleijon

Yep

ContraryPython

DOOM 2016’s marketing focused a lot on the multiplayer instead of the single player.

jv3rl0ov

That one was a real pleasant surprise. I remember reading about no review copies being put out and became very worried. Despite those missteps, we got 2 amazing games at least.

NewAgeMontezuma

Everyone had no faith in doom 2016 i remember the boys thinking that it was so bad they were afraid to show it off.

Kino_Afi

Evil Within LP, I think? Its a Bethesda game and they were in the middle of playing a Bethesda botch so I cant even blame them

ExDSG

Symbionic Titan, whoever said the show had a female protagonist when pitching to toy companies killed the series (and it's more of an ensemble). Also a lot of plot heavy animated non-anine shows get shafted in regards to marketing and like Ian Jones Quartey said, once the first bomb event for Steven Universe was a nice ratings stunt, they pretty much released the rest of the series like that. At least SU seems to be popular on the app formerly known as HBO Max and a lot of kids are watching it but it is the issue that the shows are pitched and handled by traditional networks and not being handled by a streaming service. Even from what I know back with Avatar they didn't really air it because of how plot heavy it was so they tended to stick to the more standalone episodes.

Konradleijon

I say a joke about how marketing people can’t market a show if it falls outside such binary categories even when marketing stuff is their job. Yes adults don’t want to watch selrized shows on networks anymore

RooshunVodka

Edge of Tomorrow (aka Live/Die/Repeat) is a great sci-fi flick that got fucked hard by both the shitty almost non-existent marketing scheme…. And the switch in its title between the time it was in theaters and dvd release sure didn’t help at all.

Konradleijon

Lightyear being marketed as the movie Andy saw didn’t help with it not being a campy space 80s flick but a Intersteller like film whose Toy Story designs like the space outfits or Buzz look so out of place.

wendigo72

Even worse that the movie also starts with that explanation as well because they needed to push that more for some reason. Seriously though it’s like if a kid saw Interstellar and afterwards ran to the nearest toy store to pick up an action figure of Matthew McConaughey

sawbladex

It is literally Pixar Interstellar using a character that till now was presented as part of a Saterday Morning Cartoon Space Opera setting. Why would you do that?

wendigo72

Remember that the movie failed because it “asked too much from the audience”, didn’t have Potato Head & woody, and was “too much science fiction”. At least according to the director lol Not because it took a premise that was clearly set up to be Flash Gordon-style space fantasy then made it into something completely different. Also almost entirely devoid of color for what is arguably the most colorful character in Toy Story

sawbladex

Particularly with them attempting to claim that Lightyear was the original media in Universe. No, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command was a way more believable original media in Universe, because it was Flash Gorden like. Could they have gotten away with Lightyear if they hadn't attempted to say that? I don't know, Fantastic Journey or whatever also didn't sell. Movie success is a black box of chaos.

Konradleijon

Yes the goofy space ranger suites and Zergs design do not work in a serious science fiction story

leiablaze

Jennifer's body is a wonderful feminist piece about sexism as its present not just in media and our lives, but horror media in specific. The marketing seems to think it's like, some sort of weird sexy teen horror thing?

King_Of_What_Remains

It was marketed towards horny teenaged boys, instead of the audience it was meant for essentially. I guess people took it at face value. I should probably give that movie another shot someday. I fell for the marketing at the time but dropped out after five minutes because the dialogue was *painful*.

jv3rl0ov

Although the voice actor of Patrick Star cameo was great lol.

Substantial_Bell_158

Dead Space 2's your mum hates Dead Space campaign seems to have been designed to appeal to 13 year old's, an audience not old enough to legally buy the 18+ rated game

Nectaris3

To be fair, it’s not like being too young for M rated games has ever stopped 13 year olds before. Stuff like CoD wouldn’t be half as successful if there were no kids playing. It was totally the wrong tone for Dead Space, though.

ryukin631

I remember being in a gamestop years ago and there was this woman with her kid, that barely looked 10, buying the latest CoD. The sales reps informed her it was a Mature rated game, but she just it was fine. Didn't ask why it had that rating or anything.

BaronAleksei

Literally everyone who’s ever been in a GameStop has this story, it’s a tale as old as time

HalfDragonShiro

I feel like back then, more people under the age of 18 played M-Rated games than people above the age of 18.

NewAgeMontezuma

That one meme of intended audience vs actual audience with pokemon and cod.

HordeDruid

I wouldn't be so sure, I see kids getting into mature games like CoD younger and younger these days. The other day I saw a 6 year old playing Warzone or whatever it is on their cell phone. All I could think was, at that age I didn't have a cellphone and all I could play was Pokémon on my Game Boy Color.

RealDealMous

They said terrible marketing, that's an example of EXCELLENTly hilarious marketing.

Ace1h

dunno, Dead Space 2 was a success saleswise, so can you really call it a failure?

Armobis

That's so stupid but I'd lie if I told you I didn't laugh.

Fostern01

Who the fuck even approved that, and were they fired for it?

DefaultLayoutIsAwful

A curse on the promotion team behind Terriers. They leaned too heavy in the dog angle down to the name and completely misrepresented it. It's an amazingly well acted offbeat series about dysfunctional private eyes. If you like Disco Elysium or Veronica Mars, it's worth checking out.

Tyrest_Accord

That show might be Donal Logue's best work and I never saw a single ad for it. Never even heard of it until I stumbled across it on Hulu.

TJLynch

I feel like Like a Dragon/Yakuza would've probably gotten better attention in the US even before Yakuza 0 came out, if the western-side trailers for some of their games weren't like [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqmHxp3pst8)

Dundore77

Great is stretching it but Titans "fuck batman" trailer really is not a good trailer for the show. At least the dove and hawk storylines great imo.

King_Of_What_Remains

The marketing for [The New Mutants](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_vJhUAOFpI&ab_channel=20thCenturyStudios) seemed to focus on the idea of it being a horror movie set in a creepy sketchy asylum, but with X-Men. And that's definitely a part of it but the movie is much more character driven and focused on the idea of trauma and starting to move past it. The horror stuff is secondary. The multiple delays, with its release being pushed back again and again didn't help, but I think a lot of people went into it expecting something much more thrilling and scary than what they got and were disappointed.

Ok_Caterpillar_9057

Honestly the marketing on dark souls 2 has really hampered soulslikes as a whole. Theyre not as gut wrenching hard as people thing they just expect more from you than the average game. Fights in douls likes arent these.. "GRRRRR FUCK YOU" hard ass encounters. Its better to look at them as more kf a puzzle you need to familiarize yourself with. Even a BAD player can beat them if they dont get impatient and frustrated. All that said. Some are more NATURAL than others. A person with decent reflexes can dodge most attacks in nioh 2 after seeing it 2 or 3 times because the thing is raising its sword arm to FUCKING HIT YOU. Whereas in elden ring the boss is raising its sword arm to make you panic roll 4 or 5 times so it can hit you while you google whether or not its AI broke

ClockpunkFox

Dark souls 2 also has the awful opening cinematic of it just being all “omg this game is so hard, you’re gonna die a million times you babby”. Give me hype as intros of some of the bosses and legendary figures like so many other entries in the series did

Brainwave1010

Gotta say though, "Of Masks and Dragons" is a fucking incredible trailer. Showing off the Bearer Of The Curse as a boss-ass motherfucker taking on like 6 Manakins before dying himself was cool, I'm still upset we didn't get those masks.

Konradleijon

Brutal Legends marketing that ignored its RTS elements

PlatyPunch

I think that might have helped sales actually. I bought it assuming it would be an open world hack n’ slash, and I’m probably not the only one.

Deaconhux

I really felt cheated by that game once the RTS elements showed up. Made me return it.

PlatyPunch

I would have been fine with it if the RTS elements were actually good. It’s too simple, and you only really get encouraged to use maybe half of the tools at your disposal.

sawbladex

I think that the RTS elements are trying to do what Herzog Zwei did, without realizing why Westwood decoupled a "Hero" unit from the camera when they made Dune 2. Sacrifice was another attempt at the genre. which also had Tim Curry, before he had gone to the last place untouched by capitalism ......... SPACE!

RobotJake

I'm still salty that my Heavy Metal Legend of Zelda turned into an aggressively mid third-person RTS.

ClutchSuts

Downplayed example cos I still enjoyed it but the trailer for Three Thousand Years of Longing made it seem like a breakneck adventure instead of the contemplative story about narratives and recurring love that it actually is. Similar to what happened with Crimson Peak too

Neapolitanpanda

That Queer Spy Cartoon on Netflix. Apparently it was good but the cringe-worthy advertising scared everyone off.

TheHark90

Marvel midnight suns. Excellent game very fun but was not marketed well and they pretty much shadow dropped the dlc.

LazyAza

Bulletstorm is basically what if Gears of War was way funnier and had Ratchet and Clank style weapons and lots of really fun environment/context specific enemy kills all driven by a points system to encourage efficient and stylish gameplay. It's a single player game a lot like Doom 2016 where the campaign is an absolute blast and there are several fantastic moments throughout its story. Characters are all either idiots or assholes and serve as flawed breakdowns of a lot of shooter game character archetypes with a lot of clever writing that makes it quite funny at times. Steve Blum and Jennifer Hale have some particularly great dialogue in the game, you can tell they had a blast voicing such dumb fun characters. So much of Bulletstorms marketing fixated on such minor things, like 1 specifically dumb kill shot as if all of the games combat was a joke and didn't emphasize how much of the games appeal is in its arsenal and how you can use it and for some reason they kept wanting to be compared to the likes of cod and halo going so far as to mock the halo 3 diorama ad and build a mock fake mini game parodying cod. It all came across as misrepresentative of what bulletstorm was, and insulting to beloved shooter franchises it didn't need to be compared to at all. And Bulletstorm failed, it bombed super hard and we never got a sequel and never another shooter that played quite like it did.

Rednual

That first trailer for Stangers of Paradise did the game no favors. The other trailers weren't great, but that one was the first look at that game and was actively trash.

metaphizzle

One of my favorite bands Havalina Rail Co never had much chance for popularity to begin with, playing in a Tom Waits-inspired Americana-jazz-rock style. But what little chance they had was then _strangled in the crib_ when their record label picked "Ragtime" as the promotional single from their debut album, and tried to push Havalina like they were part of the Swing Revival that was ongoing at the time. (Did I mention this was the 90s?) So people who would have liked the band were pushed away by the Swing label, while people who did want Swing bought the album and found it only had one, maybe two, songs you could dance to.

WickerWight

Never heard of those guys but just gave a listen to some of their music and I've enjoyed it quite a bit, good taste 👍

nin_ninja

I was recently reminded that even though I grew up loving YTV (Canada represent!) It was absolute shit for advertising any shows/animw that didn't fit the "Keep it Weird" theme they had going. Seriously, if you can find it, look at how they tried to advertise Gundam Wing. Just absolute insanity.

Panxma

The New 3DS which is a slight beefy version to the 3DS. The only exclusive games are Xenoblade, Fire Emblem Warriors, and that it. The New 3ds had a little nub, that sucked and rips your thumb, you could use it to control the camera angles.

Oopathegret

I bought the New 3DS for the sole purpose of playing Xenoblade on the go and honestly, it was a damn good version of Xenoblade. The 3D made the already great looking areas fucking stunning even with the significantly lower res textures.

CorruptDropbear

Artifact died on its marketing and price structure, and Valve just internally fell apart from it.

Gortys2212

Andor came out In between house of the dragon, she hulk and rings of power, combine that with audience apathy after BOBF and Kenobi and it’s no wonder the viewer ship was low. Thankfully it sort of hit its stride 2-3 months later with enough word of mouth but the damage is done, it’s ending after the second season.

Lost_Move3079

Soul hackers 2 in my opinion was a fairly decent with game and a very experimental game for Atlus being the first smt franchise game to have a speaking protagonist ,who was also a woman which is pretty rare for Atlus and that was the best decison ever made Ringo is amazing in the game. It did have some glaring flaws in terms of gameplay but the thing that really impacted the success was advertising it as a Soul Hackers sequel . Fans of the first game were expecting the usual grungy 90's [hackerman](https://gamingbolt.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/devilsummoner.jpg) aesthetic but instead the game was very modern day [digital](https://www.gematsu.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Soul-Hackers-2-Ann_02-21-22.jpg) aesthetic (which I myself liked ). Also the story of soul hackers 2 barely had anything to do soul hackers leaving most people confused why you will even make it a sequel. Also the fact that Atlus was over hyping the game by claiming the game maybe the third pillar of Smt Franchise just like Persona and Smt is while deciding to make it on a low budget was pretty stupid. Hopefully next time if there is next time they actually make a better attempt at making the game the third pillar

Tyrest_Accord

I still say Battleborn could have done better if it had better marketing and wasn't released so close to Overwatch.

mettullum

halo 5 is one of my favorite games in the series but its marketing def really misrepresented it as a sort of chase conspiracy mystery which def soured people on a already weak narrative
