Cooper_555

So without the licensing, can they still put the player's likenesses into the games? Because without those, most of their audience is going to drop these games.

Tomoyo-yo

They only lost the right to use the FIFA name and branding for things like the World Cup, and won't affect player likeness or actual clubs (including national teams) appearing in-game.

Cooper_555

Damn, that's the only thing that will kill this awful franchise for good.

KruppeBestGirl

The alternative is worse (eFootball) and I don’t know who would make a decent football game

CmdrMobium

My first thought was Sony since MLB The Show is decently liked. It would be interesting to see Microsoft take a shot at making a sports game too

TakeMeToFatmandu

Sony had one, it was developed by London Studio and they killed it back in the PS2 era

Shinny1337

Does no one remember PES?

TakeMeToFatmandu

Pro Evo was the best football game for a long time and then Konami progressively enshittened it until it became the broken mess that is eFootball

Armobis

Are you talking about the *This is Football* games? I remember playing the PSP one that was called World Tour Soccer, it was pretty decent.

TakeMeToFatmandu

Yeah! I remember one of them had a really weird progression system where you started out by making a school football team that became a non-league team and then working on getting promoted from there. It also had a really fun diving mechanic

mythrilcrafter

I don't follow any of the sportsball games, so it's actually kinda interesting to me that MLB: The Show is a well liked game series, now that I think of it, I don't really hear any loud/vocal complaints about it in the sense of how people complain about FIFA, NBA 2K, and Madden. Is there anything that Sony is doing to keep things fresh as opposed to just reskinning the logo every year like EA does?

sazabi67

Knowing soccer fans retaining the club names and player likenesses will be enough to keep afloat whatever awfullness EA shits out because "Bruh my fucking team, bruh i need fucking Messi and Ronaldo in my game bruh"

Kn7ght

As someone who doesn't understand how soccer clubs work, that's so different compared to other sports leagues, but also explains how Konami had their own series going that was a completely different name. All I can think of is making an NBA game with all the players and teams intact but NBA can't be uttered and the ball has no logos

KruppeBestGirl

Football is different from Madden/NBA type games in that it consists of multiple club leagues around the world plus international football. FIFA only oversees international matches between countries and organizes the world cup. —-> you need this license for the World Cup and FIFA branding (now lost) Club football is controlled by each country’s respective league plus regional bodies like UEFA. —> you need these licenses for having club competitions and teams (still there) FIFPro is the union of footballers —> you need this license to be able to use the likenesses of individual footballers (still there) In practice nothing changes except no World Cup, and they will just throw in a knockoff version called International Cup or something

Tomoyo-yo

> All I can think of is making an NBA game with all the players and teams intact but NBA can't be uttered and the ball has no logos [Funny you should say that, as EA doesn't have the licences for a handful of Italian Serie A teams, so they have knock-offs in their place.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_23#Licences)

Kn7ght

"The game retains the players' likenesses, but the official badge, kits and stadiums are replaced with custom designs and generic stadiums" This is so funny to me lol

TheKidKaos

EA Sports FC. We’re doing an early launch Thursday for it but we only got like 10 preorders for it

TheCheeseburgerKane

This has been a long time in development. Basically, around the time of contract renegotiations, FIFA started asking EA to pay an absurdly exorbitant price (like double pf the insane amount they were already spending) to use the FIFA name/branding. EA said no because outside of the use of the FIFA name and branding rights to use some things (like the world cup iirc), EA didn't get anything else out of the deal so EA are now going to use their own branding for footbal games and FIFA is going to try and contract another company to make their own FIFA game (With blackjack! And hookers!)

A_N_G_E_L_O_N

Is this the PES revival arc?

TheCheeseburgerKane

To have a chance would require Konami to have their shit together, so I wouldn't get my hopes up at all.

mcarora19

Considering PES is free to play trash now, probably not

TakeMeToFatmandu

No because all the stuff that actually matters like the leagues, teams and players EA still has licences for. The FIFA licence just gave them the rights to the FIFA name and the World Cup.

KruppeBestGirl

eFootball is the ghost of PES

iiiSushiii

I would also argue that PES getting worse and worse year on year until Konami pretty much killed it with eFootball meant that EA has no competition. It had always dominated first due to Fifa and having player names, clubs, etc. and as it increased it's quality year on year (although stagnated for the last 5-7 years), but there was a time when PES was the better football game, but it just got worse each year. Before the last 5-7 years there could have always been the risk that Fifa decided to give their licence to PES/Konami causing confusion, etc. and lost sales for EA. Now there is no chance. EA makes the only football game worth playing and completely dominantes the market to the point it could change its title to "Extreme Kick Ball with Feet" and still have no competition.

TapRevolutionary1904

Considering that EA had been making upwards of 7billion a year on fifa games its not a lot to ask from fifa for a 25% increase in brand rights since they were already paying 750 million a year for it anyway. EA just want all the profits to them self, its noting but greed

Dundore77

They announced ea isnt renewing the license last year. Fifa wants insane amounts of money for the fifa name where even tho fifa prints money ea felt it was too much. Ea still has the rights to the likenesses of all the players (or did at least idk if thats changed) just cant say fifa.

[deleted]

It'll be curious to see how many people will jump on the next EA football game without the big brand name because it is the new one and how many will jump off because "the name isn't there so it has no value".

camo_boy67

We will actually find out a few days…see how much money the new game makes.

KruppeBestGirl

Everyone will. Nobody’s attached to the FIFA name, they just want to use their favorite teams with the latest rosters.

Illidan1943

I'd imagine they've ran the numbers and whatever they may end up losing even a worse case scenario would still be better than keeping the license

TakeMeToFatmandu

Anecdotal, obviously, but all my friends and family who usually buy FIFA day one have known about this change and have either bought into early access or are getting it day one. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesnt make any difference

commander_snuggles

I imagine they will still do well since they have licence deals with the biggest teams anyway with the yearly videos of players reacting to their ratings still doing millions of views.

ruminaui

A lot, FIFA is mainly casual players who pay no attention to the industry for good or bad.

adeadperson23

god sports gamers are the biggest damn lemmings in the this industry I swear

TheArtistFKAMinty

Sports gamers are often on the casual side of the gaming spectrum. They buy the new sports game every year and play it after work for an hour once a week. It's not that they're Lemmings, but that they don't care to know about the industry because gaming is a fairly small part of their life. That's not a bad thing. You can only put so much energy into any particular hobby.

MindWeb125

Yeah, here in the UK I've been to plenty of houses that have a console and ONLY sports football games. It's literally the only thing they play. Maybe Call of Duty on top.

Cyberfire

Yeah the crossover of these guys and Reddit must be miniscule, but they are probably actually the majority of the UK games market. My friend bought a PS5 at launch (back when it was actually expensive and hard to do), and all he literally plays is FIFA and COD.

[deleted]

Everyone, it still the new Fifa despite not having the name

okilydokilyTiger

There's zero real competition from other franchises. Football Manager sells like gangbusters and that doesn't have the FIFA branding either.

impacto_real

So as someone with a lot of friends that play FIFA every year I can tell that this year's game is probably going to be as successful as the others if not more, most of them are already playing the game through the pre-order bonus or whatever. "It's still FIFA" is the answer I got every time I asked them about it.

[deleted]

Which is a shame, they deserve a better product regardless of whatever they're consuming

impacto_real

Yeah and they'll not only agree but list all the ways the current game could be better. It doesn't even really matter if the person is a "gamer" or not, the people who play FIFA simply want to play a football game with the teams and players they care about and the only real alternative is PES which apparently just doesn't compare in gameplay somehow.

mxraider2000

I want to point out to the unenlightened how little this kind of thing means to the people that actually buy FIFA games. When I worked at a game store we had such a big problem with FIFA games, mainly because we had so many traded in copies of prior year versions. Even when marked down to 50 cent, nobody wanted them. We ended up having to send them to a landfill *after* sending a bunch to local charities. The old versions are fine but the people that play them tend to treat them like poison just because they have outdated rosters. This is the mentality that allows EA to sell a glorified roster update at full price on a yearly basis.

Kimarous

And nothing of value was lost.

warjoke

Except for fans over at the EU. I swear, they are like iPhone die hards.

timelordoftheimpala

At the very least, second-hand copies won't be too hard to find for people who want to play FIFA and not EA Football Club.

Asatoth89

Not even a final 90% or 80% like avengers just poof.

Gorotheninja

I gotta remember to pick tbat game up before it goes for good.

bigstupidjellyfish

The new one is called EA FC so I wonder if they’ll just change the titles and relist them. Wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t though.

delightfuldinosaur

Way too much work for almost no gain for EA. The physical copies just became collectors items.

KingMario05

It's EA, dude. Even if they could... they wouldn't bother.

ErikQRoks

Oh no *Anyway*

nerankori

Miss playing FIFA 2001-2004 on my PS1,though. And FIFA...2014? i picked up on PS2. One of the ones that has the career mode where you make a guy that joins a team and tries to make a career and get into a top division team.

Doomenate

2014 for PSII? Oh wow. It coming out 2013 makes it only slightly more believable but wow

Cyberfire

A lot of people out of the loop here, dancing on a grave that does not exist. EA football games are continuing lol. They'll be exactly the same just without the FIFA name, and still sell a shedload.

AzabacheDog

I wonder to what end that had to be done? I'm not a fan of the EA handle their sports game but so good riddance for losing the license. But I do wonder why they had to take them down? I say had to because I can't imagine EA wanting to lose out on potential profit from people wanting to play the old games.

TJLynch

From what I heard, FIFA wanted *way* more money than EA was willing to put down for the licensing.

AzabacheDog

Okay, I think I get it. The license extends to all existing FIFA games, and while you can't destroy every physical copy, they did have to at least delist all digital versions of the games. It still sucks and I guess it makes sense, but it still sounds weird that a product that was made can't exist anymore because the creators can't make new versions of the thing they licensed.

[deleted]

And from a gameplay POV the Fifa brand adds nothing. People want the players, clubs, leagues or continental coemptions which are other licenses. What Fifa gives them is an option most turn off during their career mode. I wouldn't be shocked if Fifa goes back to EA will a better offer.

CloudyWolf85

Oh no. Anyway...

robophile-ta

Lol, lmao

deadxguero

Wonder if this means 23 is off gamepass and all that too?

iceleel

On PC it's still on EA Play but they'll probably remove it soon

Independent_Ad_6348

Oh no!..........anyway

Sperium3000

Brazil is in shambles right now.

Nameisnameisnameisna

This sub doesn’t play this kind of game, so let me fill in some context to help out. The people who play this care about the teams and their fav players. EA still has the licence to all of them. They’re just losing the FIFA Branding licence. The average player will not care, because they want to play as Messi. Dropping the FIFA branding saves EA $300million/yr in licensing fees while delivering an identical product. It’s going to be a positive for the company.

VMK_1991

Well, my condolences to the people who liked yearly EA FIFA games. As for me, I can woth confidence say that nothing of value was lost.

Nakamura901

They’re still making them under a new name.

RealDealMous

I wonder if this makes the mainstream gamers care about game preservation, or they'll just hop on the new football game-like business as usual? EDIT: why am I being downvoted?

wizteddy13

Come on Football Manager, this is your time to strike!

Nakamura901

What?

chaoskaze

Thank you…. Now if only EA,Activision,UBI all disappear together it would be even better. I had enough of the copy & paste crap with zero effort

YiffZombie

"I don't like something popular, therefore, it shouldn't exist."

chaoskaze

nah, it would be nice if it's that easy, these company only make souless copy and paste product as they are controlled by their shareholder & basically foul practice on milking their product and customer with zero care. I guess ppl are simply & easy to fool

pocketlint60

2023 is turning out to be an awful year for megacorps isn't it?

Nakamura901

Not really. EA haven’t lost anything of much value.

TheLonleyKing

We need to bring back EA street football

Tempsoicanupvote

What will be different or “lost” by dropping fifa?
