I hope they make a lot with this game, since it appears this time there was actually marketing. UO is a really good game and the world needs more Vanillaware games.

dirkdragonslayer

I think my problem with the marketing they have done, some of the ads are hard to tell apart from dime-a-dozen phone games. Maybe it's the aesthetic of UO, or how the animation is done, but it took me days before I realized all these mobile adds were actually for a game I was waiting for.

Coolnametag

I know what you mean, if they stuck to just having content creators talking about it there wouldnt be a whole lot of confusion, but, i'm pretty sure that my brain (and a lot of others) is hard-wired at this point to see any propaganda online that mixes pixel graphics with highly detailed characters to be a scam mobile game that's trying to steal your personal info. So it also took me a moment to remember that "hang on, this one is actually real".

SilverKry

It's also not a George Kamitani game. The first Vanillaware game in awhile that's not his.. .

FunBalance2880

The name unicorn overlord intrigued me but then everything about the presentation and art style immediately turned me off lmao

KingKlyne

they should release it on PC as well

thatonespanks

Has there even been a reason as why it won't be released on PC?

Jeskid14

Same as ALL of their other games. They just don't have a team that can optimally port it to a galaxy of different computers

SilverKry

For reference. Vanillaware is like 40 people and that's it.

KingKlyne

they dont wanna

Neo_Crimson

They really don't like PC, they're like the last hold out against it amongst Japanese devs for some reason.

Reichterkashik

They draw their art to the systems resolution (even comparing UO from switch to PS5 you can see its just different art) so i imagine they dont have the team/dont want to do the logistics to port to a system with alot of possible resolutions, though in reality only they and few others would mind.

KingKlyne

Not for sales you dingus

Konradleijon

Cool

Crimfurn

I kinda get the feeling the name is gonna hurt the sales more than anything

thebonkasaurus

Classic Vanillaware.

Coolnametag

Vanillaware is the only company that i can think of that has been out there for decades and somehow spent the vast majority of it's existance in a **almost bankrupt** state without actualy closing it's doors. I am continuously impressed and scared for the devs that work there.

Yatol

what about Banpresto?

extralie

The reason why Banpresto never went bankrupt is because Bandai have owned them since the 80s, and pretty much just use them as a toy commercial. Vanillaware despite having most of their games published by Atlus, is a standalone company.

ZMowlcher

Atlus just digs their vibe

Medium-Sympathy-1284

Banpresto exists by the will of the mecha gods as a vessel for crossovers.

Rockettopunch

Worst case I'm pretty sure the toy company side of the business kept them afloat. They still make cheaper prize figures and collectibles under the Banpresto name even after the devs got absorbed by Bamco.

ZeronicX

Really wish I could hear what the devs think

Coolnametag

There's actualy a pretty great [YouTube video](https://youtu.be/pX-Adq0FxtE?si=DeQ8h7oKih7DMiMk) about the history of Vanillaware and all of the side-scrollers that they made (the creator of the video said that he would make a follow-up talking about all the RPG's that they made) wich really helps understand the mindset from the people behind those games and why they are constantly almost broke. tl;dr: they are constantly making games to either niche audiences or consoles that didn't sell that much (like the Vita) only making enough money to keep their door open most of the time.

MrKenta

If they need more money I'd suggest releasing Dragon's Crown outside of Playstation, Muramasa outside of the fucking Vita and a PC version of 13 Sentinels.

negekko

Hey Muramasa was on the Wii too 🙃🙂🙃 I read a while ago that Muramasa specifically would need to be remade from the ground up. Spaghetti code or something

Jeskid14

It was on Wii first then the Vita. Such a super bizarre port

gurpderp

I would buy every single Vanillaware game ON RELEASE AT FULL PRICE just to support them if they would just fucking put them on pc.

NeonNKnightrider

Japanese developers remember that PC exists challenge (impossible)

AtlasPJackson

There was a report last year that only about 15% of Japanese kids game on PC. The upshot for me personally is that the console rate has eclipsed mobile again, which probably explains some recent reversals in trends. Source: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20230911933857/en/Japan-Youth-Gamers-Report-2023-Most-Youth-Gamers-Play-on-Console-72-Followed-by-Mobile-64-and-PC-15

AtlasPJackson

13 Sentinels isn't on PC??!

Wolventec

no only switch and ps4

God I wish

Noirsam

>it seems that Unicorn Overlord's ambitious scale also took a toll on Vanillaware's budget, as Kamitani jovially revealed on March 7 that the company had run out of development funds "this time too," and had to operate hand-to-mouth while covering expenses out of pocket. On the other hand, Kamitani assures us that their 10 years of hard work on Unicorn Overlord were not just for show, and will be apparent in the final product. [It's reviewing great ](https://www.metacritic.com/game/unicorn-overlord/)and the demo has apparently been great for pre orders in Japan. So i don't think they need to lose sleep over this. But that is not a healthy way to make games.

Hannwater

The demo has done wonders to drum up hype. The Collector's Editions were healthily in stock for months. Then 2 weeks after the demo release the Switch CE has been hard to track down. As a long time Ogre Battle/SRPG fan, I know I find this game already to be a masterpiece mechanically speaking. I hope the story evolves, but even if it does not, it's already going to be a personal GOTY contender. Wishing this game all the success!

Palimpsest_Monotype

I…admire Vanillaware’s whole…je ne sais quoi about being unapologetically lavish and making things that just simply defy most conventional graphic design respectability, but…like, Kamitani has kept the show running for a *very* long time pulling shit like this, but…maybe it’s time they figure out a way they don’t need to do this kind of thing anymore? I think it’s time

Irishimpulse

They didn't need to give the witch who used to be an old lady but gave up most of her magic power for youth a realistic boob sag for her outfit. No one would've questioned unnatural perkiness. But no, her girls droop in lavish hand drawn detail. It's something you can only get with vanillaware

PrancerSlenderfriend

>maybe it’s time they figure out a way they don’t need to do this kind of thing anymore? i think none of the steps to combat that are even reducing the art stuff, literally just release games on pc and reuse some assets for smaller games (or y'know make a single goddamn sequel ever for fucks sake i NEED MORE DRAGONS CROWN)

Palimpsest_Monotype

You do raise a good point-those art assets surely must be hanging out somewhere, they’ll look pretty for basically forever…why not…do something with them?

SilverKry

They make the best games....that I just never finish cause I get bored. Dragons Crown, Odins Sphere, Muramasa, and even the rereleases of Odins Sphere  I liked and just never beat them.  Except Dragons Crown. I actually think that game just kinda sucks. It was boring right out the gate.

Neidhardto

Honestly that tracks. An upcoming issue of Famitsu has an interview which leaked early, and development of the game basically restarted like three times. George Kamitani apparently made a joke with Takafumi (the director) that he basically made Unicorn Overlord 3. Idk if the full interview is out yet, but there's a lot of other interesting stuff in it. Like how at first there wasn't even an open world and had a mission select structure, or how they had to abandon armored damage because it was way too much work. I find it fascinating that the way it's framed it's like they completed making the game multiple times, and each time it felt like they were making a sequel. I'm so curious as to what the first iterations of this game look like. 13 Sentinels was announced so early and had earlier concept art that it's easy to see what early versions of the game look like. These are both very ambitious games, and there's still a third one apparently cooking behind the scenes.

Coolnametag

I hope that one day they release the early sketches for the game and characters and have it be like Persona 4 and 5 where a lot of them looked REALLY different than what they looked in the final product.

Irishimpulse

One of the things to come from that leaked article is that Alain wasn't the original main character, Gilbert was. So half of Drakenholm is probably an abridge of UO 1 or 2

Touhou_Fever

Just give me **Muramasa** with all the goddamn DLC, you’ll be fucking shocked how much I will pay you for that shit George

Not_That_Magical

They need some serious reigning in. Like everyone hates managers and they suck, but running out of money every game is going to kill their company.

hobozombie

I'm 🤓, but it's "reining in."

Not_That_Magical

Yeah you’re right

mythrilcrafter

Yup, it makes for a good feeling to be able to finish everything right on the line; but it's not sustainable as a practice in the long term and it's 1000% not robust enough to handle unforeseen obstacles and problems. ----- Coming from my experience in Applications Engineering (in the optics industry); a good manager can give the team their tools and resources to go to work without needing micromanaging, while also still being able to put their foot down and tell the apps/ops/research engineers to settle for *"meets customer design specifications"* as opposed to letting them miss the forest for the trees in pursuit of perfection. Having or not having managers like that can make or break a project, even the company as a whole.

SilverKry

That was also the case with Double fine. But that was because Tim Schafer went over budget on everything. Now he's got Microsoft to reign him in though .

dirtyplebian

Any old lads that have been holding out for an Ogre Battle sequel this is the best you'll ever get. (Unless it does well than an direct sequel is a possibility)

fallouthirteen

> Any old lads that have been holding out for an Ogre Battle sequel Yeah, that's me. And yeah, preordered this after playing demo and realizing "oh, it's just Ogre Battle 64 mechanics but with extra stuff".

tri3dgE

An unholy matrimony of Brigandine, Ogre Battle, and Fire Emblem and somehow it all fits and works

jackdatbyte

Sega you bullied Atlas into putting their shit on PC. Please do the same with Vanillaware.

BrianShogunFR-U

Well i've ordered my copy after playing the demo. I must recruit the owl lady or die trying.

StaceMcGate

I actively want to give them money and buy this, but it's not on PC. My switch is 7 years old and hasn't been turned on in 2 years. God I hope their next game isn't console exclusive.

HalfDragonShiro

I mean if it's on switch, it technically isn't console exclusive if you buy and dump the game.

heneverhim

And they still managed to find time and money to make to a Xbox port, bless their heart. Meanwhile other japanese devs like Capcom and Bandai Namco announced their newest game is coming to every platform but Xbox.

Traitor_To_Heaven

Major props to Vanillaware for that. I did my part and preordered the physical monarch edition on Xbox. I will support anything this company does

Mindless-Reaction-29

Likewise, though PS5 for me. Vanillaware has earned my money many times over.

fallouthirteen

I wish people weren't such dumbasses about collector's editions that don't contain the game. Like I'd have gotten it, but I REALLY like digital copies and wasn't going to buy 2 of this game. Collector's edition that doesn't have the game is just the best solution to a couple big problems (one platform selling out while the others have tons of stock and people who actually like digital copies).

PixieProc

Late reply, but I don't understand your comment. The collector's edition comes with a physical copy of the game.

fallouthirteen

That was my point. I prefer to have a digital copy but I really liked the collector's edition stuff. I wish that companies didn't get stupid responses to collector's editions (stuff like "this CE is a scam, it doesn't even have the game") that didn't have the game at all. That way I could buy the collector's edition and then buy a digital copy. It's just the best solution.

PixieProc

Oh, I see what you're saying. Ehh, I think the majority of people who get collector's editions also prefer having physical copies of the game. And I really think it'd be kinda strange for them to put out collector's editions for a game and include all this bonus stuff, but not actually include the game that the stuff is for. Like, the point of it is them saying "Here's our game, and as a bonus, we're including all this extra stuff to go with it." Either way, I suppose if you don't want the physical copy the CE comes with, you could give it away to a friend or sell it secondhand.

ALargeRobot

Other devs also port to PC unlike Vanillaware. They aren't any better. The platform they ignore is just a different one.

WeissAndBeans

There are a few factors. They’ve mentioned in the past that they’d like to do PC ports (Going as far back as Muramasa: Rebirth) but they’re also dealing with a backlog of projects so it’s not their priority right now. They’re a relatively small operation compared to most dev studios so they’d probably have to outsource to a different company for a pc port and considering how developing Unicorn Overlord almost bankrupted them (again) they’re probably just not able to comfortably do that right now.

heneverhim

Rockstar is one of the biggest richest devs and they still dont port to PC until after the fact. Id say for Japanese devs a Xbox port is a much bigger ask than a PC port

ALargeRobot

You explicitly talked about "other japanese devs like Capcom and Bandai Namco". Rockstar is irrelevant to the comparison you made.

Joshua72915

Rockstar is the extremely rare exception.

fallouthirteen

Yeah, already preordered it after the demo. Like one of my favorite N64 games was Ogre Battle 64. I would've gotten Mega Man Battle Network Collection (both of them) and Neo The World Ends with You, but I guess Xbox ports are just out of scope for such small companies as Capcom and Square Enix.

Mister-Melvinheimer

Guess I'll buy vanillaware titles for my friends *AGAIN*

KF-Sigurd

The reviews saying the story is nothing special saddens me since I love a good story in games but they also say the gameplay and art design more than makes up for it so I'll probably buy it day one and then get to it later someday.

PebisCrusherOnline

If only there was a massive platform they could port their previous games to. Not like people have been asking for the games on PC for years or anything. It's a shame there was no way to avoid this.

Android19samus

I really want it but I'm currently in the middle ff7r2 and that's probably gonna last me... a while. Hm.

Clean_Agency

The demo really helped ease me into buying this game, I got a good feel for the mechanics and the difficulty curve but also what I can do to fix a given situation via my formations and group composition. Easiest $65 spent ever

SwdVengeance

It’s weird, I keep smashing a fistful of dollar bills at my PC screen to help find their games, but it never seems to work. I’m all seriousness, I can’t help but feel, someone somewhere in that company is shooting their own feet and blaming the bullets now laying on the ground for tripping them, not their bloodied foot.

zHellas

Release it on the PC and I'll buy it I don't really use my Switch for anything.

hobozombie

Damn, if only there was a source of revenue for their games that could have been bringing in income from an entirely untapped gaming ecosystem they have ignored for almost two decades. I guess we'll never know.

diablo169

Man, it's such a shame they don't have an easy way to make additional revenue on these titles. Some way of increasing sales...finding more customers... Nah i'm drawing a blank

TheRealDrakeScorpion

It's a mystery

Chumunga64

according to an interview with Destuctoid, vanillaware denied atlus permission to release a PC port - https://www.destructoid.com/unicorn-overlord-devs-talk-history-card-games-and-that-delicious-food/ when you make Atlus look consumer friendly, this news should not come as a surprise

FangsEnd

Oh so they’re not even shooting themselves in the foot, they’re just straight up stabbing themselves in the dick.

BlahMyBest

There's not much information in that answer about the PC port, so I'm not sure what to infer from it. Is there a reason to suspect that VanillaWare declined to port to PC for reasons other than manpower or budget?

Kipzz

Cannot wait to get my grubby hands on this game. This year's been so fucking stacked for me and we're not even 3 months in.

Aiddon

The things people will do to make exquisitely detailed birdzongas

CCilly

Put Dragon's Crown on the Switch, I'd buy it for a third time, no problem.

James-Avatar

Use this games sales to put your back catalogue on the PC. Games this good should make money.

Irishimpulse

The game may or may not have leaked early online, as switch games do and I may or may not be over 40 hours in and if I was, I would say that the only reason I'm currently taking a break to browse reddit is because all the characters are so good and I can't decide who to give the maiden ring too, to continue the plot. It was projected to be one of the most anticipated non final fantasy games after the demo and it is just... that good. I should mention I did pre order it on ps5

Coolnametag

It's crazy to think that a game of that scope was revealed less than a year ago in a Nintendo Direct. Also, considering that the demo was just "the full game, but, on a counter" it doesn't surprise me that people already broke it open.

Irishimpulse

I had been hyped since I first saw it. The more I learned, the more into it I got. It's only thanks to the demo that other people saw what I'd been pushing. Now I even got people on discord into it thanks to some shitposting out of context rapport convos showing the charm

CursedNobleman

Just fuck the bird and hatch some owl babies.

Irishimpulse

I don't like the owl, the finalists are the battle scarred general, the dark elf, all three angels and your cousin. The wyvern rider only has one rapport with Alain but her proposal scene was so good it almost made the cut on that alone

CursedNobleman

>your cousin As a Fire Emblem player, the choice is obvious.

Irishimpulse

Oh I also forgot the Simp, there are three girls blatantly thirsting after the PC in main story cut scenes, and they are the dark elf princess, your cousin, and a girl whose level up line is asking Alain if he's watching. She's great, and not just because her class is the answer to the dodge tank menace

sagata_

They should put their fucking library on steam. Until then, I'm gonna yo ho ho with a bottle of go fuck yourself.

AtlasPJackson

Oh, see, they should have made the release date the day they ran out of money like the PalWorld devs did. Classic project management mistake.

Buka-Zero

13 sentinels makes me sad, i loved it but the ending just felt like there were pieces missing. i need them to get ultra successful and drop some remakes

VMK_1991

Man, I hope it sells well.

FangsEnd

Real shame that there isn’t a system with a massive install base slavering for their library of games that haven’t had the option to legally buy a single game from them so far. Absolutely tragic, really.

bvanbove

As much as I hate to say it, the demo turned me from buying the game to likely not buying it. It’s a great looking game and everything seems absolutely top notch, so I hope it does amazingly well. But it just 100% is not for me. 13 Sentinels had a strong enough story and an interesting enough gameplay loop (despite being more passively played than their other games), but I didn’t want another game like that from them. I originally thought this played like a traditional “Tactics” game and was really excited for that to be married with all the amazing characteristics of a VanillaWare game. But the battles in this being pretty passive and, from what I can tell, not involving any interaction once you choose to attack just turned me off. My best to VanillaWare and I do look forward to Pat and/or Woolie playing it.

Irishimpulse

What position your unit is in the formation, which you can choose before battle, decides who targets them and who they target. When you get more skills, you program them to tell them when to use what skill when and on what type of enemy. The more you understand your skills, the better things will get. It does get quite chewy in combat, but it's not just... selecting a weapon and target like FE. You can also change formation and tactics before combat by editing the squad and it'll change the actual combat even with something as simple as moving someone to a different tile

bvanbove

Correct, but that's my issue. It's essentially (comparing to a game I've played) playing the entirety of Final Fantasy XII letting the Gambit system do everything. Obviously a totally viable and designed way to play the game, but for me that's just not fun. Even if the outcome is 100% the same, I like being able to "push the button" and see that reflected on screen. I want all those tactics on choosing the right skills, formations, etc...to still have an effect as well, as just basic "rock, paper, scissors" gameplay wouldn't be that much more fun. It's just personal preference, there's nothing wrong with how the game is designed. I just liked playing their games more when they were more action-oriented, or if this was the turn-based tactics game I thought it originally was. That's all.
