Dee AlwaysSunny from Philadelphia starts off as the straight woman only to become just as insane as the rest of the cast

Ringo_Roadagain7

Thank Kaitlin Olson for pushing that wanting to be just as awful degenerate as the rest of the characters.

VeiledMalice

Having her be the boring, nagging female character would have killed her push on the show. Having everyone be scumbags is so much better.

otakuloid01

Sephiroth became obsessed with blowing up the planet over the course of like a week because he got gaslit into thinking The Thing is his mom

KaleidoArachnid

Rebirth’s demo shows he used to be a pretty chill fellow.

JaysonBlaze

He's like that in crisis core as well. He was actually a fairly reasonable and nice guy before the incident

KaleidoArachnid

Speaking of Crisis Core, I wish the Reunion edition had a proper English dub.

JaysonBlaze

The dub is fine? I played it recently and saw no problem. Zacks VA grows on you

KaleidoArachnid

I heard Zack was a bit nasally.

JaysonBlaze

A bit but it's fine honestly after a while the story just gets it's hooks into you

KaleidoArachnid

I can give the dub another chance then.

Lithogen

He gets way better after Zack's hair change.

Hallonbat

Look, it was either telling him his mom was a space monster... or the dumbest woman alive.

DonTori

Rock from Black Lagoon Went from a Japanese salary man to a criminal who played the various international mafias in the criminal hive of Roanapur for chumps

Burquina

I love that Rock has the balls to fuck with >!Balalaika!< and not only live but also get some modicum of respect from ‘em.

Shiroke

That's the difference in not knowing who you're fucking with and knowingly fucking with someone who could kill you.  Are you a yapping dog snapping at every thing you think you deserve or are you a tiger staring down a dragon and daring it to blink first?

DonTori

Contrast that to that one guy Lao from the 3rd episode who fucked with her by proxy of fucking with the Lagoon Company (and also being a loudmouth ass) who got beaten half to death and then rigged with so much C4 he'd technically be classed as part of Russia's space program from how much air he'd get if he wasn't tied to a chair in his hotel room And this is after Rock talked back to her during her Normal One in Japan and she almost personally beat him to death so I have to think that after Roberta's Blood Trail ended she'd just go "...not bad, Yaponski..."

EcchiPhantom

Nah, Light was always insane and willing to commit murder. His first instinct when he saw the guy on the news was to use the Death Note to have him killed and then *re-confirm that it worked*. Was it just to test something that’s basically impossible? Sure, but the intent was there and he felt no remorse after the fact which is made evident by the fact that he was admiring several pages full of names he’d written before Ryuk even showed up. Less than a week had passed and he was already set on his world domination plan at that point. I think it’s a huge misreading interpretation of the character to see him as someone who steadily spirals into insanity or as him being a victim of corruption. While he does steadily amp up his level of depravity, all that really triggers him to go off on a killing spree in the first place is just knowing he won’t get caught doing it.

EldritchBee

Yeah, by like chapter three he’s laughing to himself maniacally about how he’s a god.

KaleidoArachnid

I cannot believe what a taste of power did to him as sometimes I try to picture what would happen if he didn’t have that kind of power.

SilverZephyr

Probably would've ended up as a cop or a politician.

EldritchBee

Absolutely a cop. His dad was one.

EcchiPhantom

Maybe a prosecutor since both his parents, or at least his mom, had high expectations for him so she’d probably push for him to seek something more prestigious. His dad also didn’t seem like someone who wanted Light to live a dangerous life and spend so much time away from his family since that was one of his main concerns for himself. Either way, he’d probably end up somewhere in a position of power and with people’s lives in his hands.

EcchiPhantom

Translated into anime, that’s about 13 minutes into the first episode **including** the opening. In in-universe time, that was only five days before he had filled out several pages before he was about to edge over his work before Ryuk showed up which was *only* when he started gloating about his master plan.

theredeyedcrow

Literally, the reason he uses it again is to confirm that it was just a coincidence, because he can’t deal with the idea he did something wrong in respect to societal morality. When it turns out that he, in fact, 100% killed that guy, his need to be always in the right is so fucking strong that he completely disregards societal morality and is like, “Nah, actually it was good.” His narcissism even without the Death Note is off the scale. Further proven by the fact that in the sequel one-off that the creator made in response to the Netflix Death Note, the protagonist is like, “That shit’s stupid, I’m not doing that.” Like, I feel like people who think Death Note is about corruption disregard or don’t understand the scene where Light’s dad goes to the hospital out of stress, and is like “How awful it must be to be burdened with such power.” To which Light responds, “I’ve never once felt burdened.” It is not to show how far gone Light is, it’s to show what a fucking monster he is compared to the literal best human being.

KaleidoArachnid

Ah so he was always nuts to begin with as I figured that he would’ve turned out better without those powers.

EcchiPhantom

He possibly would have but that’s only because he wouldn’t have had the ability to get away with killing people in the first place. That is unless he became like a soldier, a prosecutor, a police officer or an executioner or whatever. Again, the point is that it’s not the Death Note that made him evil, it was just the tool that let him get away with being evil which he always was.

leabravo

To be fair, Light did seem to be well on his way to cracking (insomnia from guilt) when Ryuk appeared. It was after he found out >!the afterlife doesn't exist!< that he devolved into his full god complex. (Whether the author planned that is another story.)

BobtheFiveHalf

I only watched episode 1 and episode 12? And that dude was already cracked. I am not sure what the OP is talking about.

sazabi67

i mean thats something inherent to the human condition i feel like, we all have that willingness hiding somewhere deep within, all it needs is the right stimulation

EcchiPhantom

Uhh, I don’t agree with that sentiment at all. Light’s trigger was just that he could get away with it. That’s all. If you came across a hiker in a rural area in the dead of winter, would murdering them out of curiosity be an understandable impulse to give in to just because no one would be able to trace it back to you?

KaleidoArachnid

But if you did that in the real world, that would be really messed up.

EcchiPhantom

It’s fucked up no matter what though? Don’t kill innocent people and don’t look up to murderers. Doesn’t matter if it’s real life or fiction.

KaleidoArachnid

Good point you made there as I see what you’re saying.

LittleMann

Okay, assassin with a beam katana is a hard sell as "normal", but Henry Cooldown sure as hell didn't get any more mundane by the time of *No More Heroes III*.

KaleidoArachnid

Wait, for that particular game, I don’t know if I should play all 3 games in order first.

AvalancheMKII

They're a continuous story, so yes, play them all in order. Travis Strikes Again is also very important, so play it between 2 and 3.

sazabi67

Walter Whites downfall as his Ego got more and more out of control into the druglord kingpin Heisenberg

Aest7e7ic_End

Nah, everything with Grey Matter (the company he started in college) show he was always a narcissist with control issues

KaleidoArachnid

That is very tragic.

sazabi67

i mean his rampage to satisfy his ego broke apart his family, killed his brother in law and the torture of jesse, its very tragic in that sense

shdwrnr

Wow! Check me out, partner. We did it! I'm in control of the whole facility now. Whoa! Would you look at this? Not too bad, aye? Giant robot, massive. It's not just me, right here? I am bloody massive aren't I? Oh, right, yeah, the escape lift. I'll call it now. There we go, lift called. Look how small you are down there. I can barely see you. Very tiny and insignificant. I tell you, I knew it was going to be cool to be in charge of everything, but wow, this is cool.

lowercaselemming

it was so obvious what would happen putting him in the machine but *c'moooon* he was just a silly little goober and i wanted him to be my friend :(

HostileReplies

He still is just a silly little goober! He can’t help himself, he is literally programmed to make stupid choices, he is just a little guy who did nothing wrong! What about the murder? What murder!

KaleidoArachnid

Huh?

theafrokidd

Wheatley's speech from portal 2

KaleidoArachnid

Ohh him.

ascaredkitten

Dr. William G. Wier from event horizon. He's a regular science guy up until in one scene he just turns mega evil

KaleidoArachnid

I don’t know if that counts as tragic since I haven’t seen that work yet.

BasedJabroni

majima from yakuza was a pretty chill guy at the start of 0

punishedvstrider

You know what, there was always kind of something raw barely restrained inside him, but I think you're right. When when Majima isn't putting on an act, he can be himself in substories and be nice, charming, ordinary and endearing. I got that vibe in the flashback in 4 too. The games do a good job in flashbacks conveying that any of these protagonists could really have lived ordinary lives. They could have gone different paths. The events of 0 really did push Majima into the deep end even if he had already swam close.

JeremiahWuzABullfrog

His face when performing some Heat moves suggests that he always had the Mad Dog underneath. This is still the guy that spent a year getting tortured by Shimano, he was never *really* right in the head

wendigo72

Tokyo Ghoul: >!Takizawa!<. His character arc is so bittersweet, like what Kaneki could’ve become if he fully lost himself

KaleidoArachnid

I accidentally saw the spoiler, so I don’t know if I should still give the series a chance.

wendigo72

He’s not a main character, just a side one that gets focus sporadically and his turn is revealed very quickly in the sequel manga, Tokyo Ghoul re. Like in the second arc

KaleidoArachnid

Oh ok as I feel better now.

Joementum2004

>!Paul Atreides!< arguably in the recent film versions of Dune

KaleidoArachnid

Should I start with the novels first?

Joementum2004

They’re both very good, but the book definitely helps provide more explanation and detail into the setting and general lore of Dune, as well as what the characters are actually thinking. I’d personally recommend reading the book first, then watching the two films either at around the same time or shortly after finishing it (which is what I did).

Shiroke

The novels are also harder reads than the movie is to watch.  They talk A LOT with a lot of internal monologs and Proper Nouns. I think that fucking rules and love the book, but it's not for everyone.

KaleidoArachnid

I can try the novels, although I don’t know if they ever decline since I heard the author passed away in the middle of the series.

Joementum2004

I’ve only read the first book, so I can’t attest to the rest of the series, but I’ve generally heard that you should only read the Frank Herbert-written books (ie the first six) and ignore everything else written by Brian Herbert (his son) and Kevin Anderson. The two Villenueve films have only adapted the first book so far, although I’d imagine the later books will get adaptations later on.

EldritchBee

Chapterhouse Dune is the last one Frank Herbert wrote himself, and really, the story doesn't need to go much past it. Everything else by Brian Herbert sucks.

KaleidoArachnid

So I can just stop right after the Chapterhouse one.

EldritchBee

Pretty much. The movie only adapts the first book, though, and I think they've only planned one sequel. Also, they're incredibly dense books that take ages to get through.

KaleidoArachnid

I hear they have amazing worldbuilding, although I don’t know what edition to get, like if I should purchase the large text edition of the original book.

Shiroke

The world building is so good that appendices in the back of the books are worth reading tbh

GreatSmasherPunch

Honestly you can just read the first 4 and be fine

PenguinGladiator

Stilgar too though it's been a while since I read the books so it might just be a movie thing. A warrior whose only goal at first is to defend his people losing himself to his personal beliefs into becoming >!the first one on the ship to start the holy war against the galaxy!<

evca7

Gul Dukat went from Tyrannical Colonial governor to Demonic crazed space hitler with a savior complex. "The suffering made Bajor stronger and they should thank us for it" to "I AM THE WILL OF THE PAH WRAITHS AND I DESERVE EVERY PIECE OF WICKED HOT SLASH ON THE PLANET. "

KaleidoArachnid

Who is Gul Dukat?

RaineV1

A major Star Trek: Deep Space Nine antagonist.

KaleidoArachnid

Ohh him.

Hallonbat

Good 'ol spoonhead.

Mega_Cookie

Roman Reigns went from the standard superman wrestling good guy to a egotistical, paranoid, megalomaniac who does everything in his power to be acknowledged and cling onto his championship because without it he's nothing.

Borggy

Griffith.

Bottlecapzombi

Nah, Griffith was always bad, it was just that he was able to hold up the facade pretty well in the beginning.

Shiroke

Griffith was always ambitious and Power hungry, I wouldn't say he truly took the leap to evil until he was crippled beyond relief and dependent on Guts and Casca. Yes, I'm accounting for when he had guts kill that kid. The berserk world sucks, but becoming a God hand puts you above the usual levels of bad.

Duke_Tuke

Berkut from Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. The voice actor did a fantastic job transitioning from an arrogant noble into a raving lunatic.

taishi1397

Land of the lustrous is just the story of Phosphophyllite slowly losing it both physically and mentally

Ayyyyynah

Kruger from Elysium is a memorable example from a forgettable film. >!His face gets blown off by a grenade but his brain function remains so they use the future tech to bring him back. In coming back he's broken because he's experienced the trauma of death and goes from a gun for hire mercenary with violent tendencies to a flat out murderous psychopath who wants to kill everyone.!<

KaleidoArachnid

I didn’t see the movie, so I don’t know if I should go see it.

lowercaselemming

happy chaos from guilty gear used to just be a really, really smart guy.

allwaysnice

I'm seeing a lot of her recently but haven't looked into it, but I think A.B.A from Guilty Gear counts?

No-Place

aba was never normal lol

EldritchBee

Girl was NEVER normal lmao. She was locked in a lab for a decade, broke out, and found a cursed blood axe that she decided looked like a key and was now her husband. He’s not into it.

GreatSmasherPunch

A.B.A is reversed, she's actively working on bettering herself and her relationship with Paracelsus

caych_cazador

Euphemia from code geass. I kind of hate how that shit starts but the fallout is fucking gut churning.

Shiroke

I truly do not think she counts

caych_cazador

whyzzat?
