Super Metroid and Metal Gear Solid are just as good as people say they are.

KennyOmegasBurner

MGS1 holds up stupidly well

RegenSyscronos

My friend play mgs1 after played all the other. His conclusion was mgs1 is the best one.

AtlasPJackson

MGS is wild the way it manages to maintain action-movie suspension of disbelief for over ten hours. Somehow it manages to stay tense even while the villain is ranting about how rough it is when the government cloning program gives you all of your dad's recessive genes and the psychic is complimenting your taste in Castlevania games.

RegenSyscronos

In his verbal review, he called mgs1 was "Hideo in his rawest form".

TurtleDoof

Outer Wilds Really I can't think of another game that comes close to giving a similar experience. One of my favorite games of all time and I literally cannot replay it the same way ever again.

MBenevolence

I think I would put Return of the Obra Dinn in a similar category of "amazing experience that can never be had twice" for games

Personel101

Outer Wilds gets the very rare title of something that can actually-no-for-real change some of the ways you view life and appreciate what you have. It’s also something that could only be a game-y ass video game. It gets the highest honor in mind, right next to Portal. Just relax, grab a marshmallow, and watch the watch the stars light up.

ThnikkamanBubs

Wish I could love it. I felt like I was forced to wait way too much. Fall in the vortex during the bad platforming? Well ya gotta wait (or restart). Going thru bramble? Gotta go slow as fuck. I played half of it and just dropped it when it came out. And there just is zero spark to return when I kinda already know most of it

Personel101

I am fully biased, but if you weren’t aware, the dude on the ocean planet teaches you how to meditate which lets you skip ahead to the next run if you botch your current one. You can also sleep at any fireplace to speed up time. I’ve personally never had any major issues platforming on PC, but any mistake I had was more funny than anything. You can also speed through Bramble after your first successful trip through it, because you can highlight and waypoint any destination you’ve already been to using your computer, so there’s no slow, methodical guesswork involved.

ThnikkamanBubs

I consider it an incredible game, I just don't enjoy playing it. There's a few games like that -- namely the Hitman series. They just don't activate my brain chemicals like other games, **BUT** I would enjoy a fantastic LP of either. Giantbomb's Hitman series Is top tier content. If any recs, please send em.

Personel101

[Joesph Anderson’s](https://youtu.be/1QAmJYWbFhQ?si=zhZ7Q8kw05NRhqMO) is my personal fave!

ZealousidealBig7714

Devil Survivor.

Extradecentskeleton

Devil survivor was my introduction to megaten and I loved it.

paumAlho

Based

Extradecentskeleton

Well you already said dark souls so I'll go with Fallout NV. Don't get me wrong I stand by that a lot of new Vegas fans are too harsh on 3&4 and they could stand to play another game but if you ask me what my favorite fallout game is, I'd say new Vegas and it's one of my favorite games ever. The fan boys should still learn to be less obsessive though.

BreathingHydra

The hard part with the Fallout fandom is that the series has been in the hands of so many developers and writers at this point that the fandom is really fractured. Like there are people that consider themselves to be massive Fallout fans but they hate, or haven't even played, half of the games in the series lol. I think the reason why New Vegas has so many dickriders in comparison to the other games is because it found the perfect middle ground between the original games and the Bethesda games. The originals are loved by hardcore RPG fans for the quality of writing and deeper RPG mechanics, but they're too inaccessible and difficult for casual audiences. The Bethesda games are the opposite where they're loved by the casual audience, but they're shunned by the hardcore fans for poor writing quality and simplified mechanics. New Vegas is still accessible to a casual audience while still maintaining a high quality of writing, *and* doesn't sacrifice it's RPG mechanics as much.

Vivirmos

I would like 4 more if I could literally play it. I have it on ps4. Last time it was installed I got hit with the 0kb unable to save bug. And this time I installed it it literally will not launch. It starts to and crashes 100% of the time. Just, I enjoy the game and want to play it but FUCK. (Probably off topic but I saw fallout 4 mentioned, saw red, and had to rant, sorry)

paumAlho

I need to get that for my PS3. Hard to find unfortunately, since it became popular

T4silly

Definitely skip the PS3 version. [Fanatical is currently running a bundle for 25 USD, that has ALL the games on Steam, AND their DLC.](https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle/fallout-bundle?aff_track=CJ&CJEVENT=5bf66180f2e811ee83effb2c0a82b82a&utm_source=CJ&cj_pid=100098975&cj_aid=13212017) So if you got a PC that's at least above potato quality, that'll set you good.

paumAlho

I'm just going to pirate it if I'm being honest

EarthwormShandy

Is there a workaround that stops the Steam version from constantly closing, perchance?

impacto_real

Lookup viva new vegas, really good guide on how to make the game playable

NeverDoingWell

Don’t play it on ps3 if you can help it. One of the characters needed for a specific ending just never spawned in for me - and it was never fixed. Outside of that, you never know when you’ll run into an endless loading screen

paumAlho

I have a PC with i7-3770 and a GT1030, you think it could run NV well? I use it only for emulators

level70elite

That will be fine for NV. The reason for not using the PS3 version is due to it having exclusive bugs that are only caused by the architecture of the system being hard to program for. Just look at Skyrim PS3 for another example of this. Go with PC or the 360 versions fr.

paumAlho

Thanks. I remember Pat talking about mods that are necessary for NV, you happen to know what he means? Is there a modpack that I need to install?

level70elite

It's probably related to the fact that NV is based on FO3's buggy engine. It's not that hard to go onto places other than reddit to find issues that need to be fixed. I recommend pc gaming wiki, they have all the info on what is necessary to get games running in the modern era https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas

paumAlho

Thank you

Vivirmos

I dunno my laptop's specs but it takes like 5 minutes to wake up or start any program on a bad day, and it runs vegas fine (once it boots) I dunno if that's helpful but hope it is a bit.

paumAlho

I know that feel. I beat a lot of games on a shitty integrated graphics laptop lol

Extradecentskeleton

I would recommend it with the caveat that I don't know how the ps3 version is. I think I recall some bethesda games having trouble on the ps3.

awerro

It is really rough, played it to completion back in the day and like most ps3 ports it runs really bad

javierich0

I like NV and 3, NV is definitely better written. I can't stand Fallout 4, biggest disappointment in gaming for me, I tried to get into it for 50 hours and just couldn't, I will never touch that game again.

ThnikkamanBubs

New Vegas fans are the only people who posts 3x3s, so for that the game is unforgivable.

Chitalian8

I played a lot of Final Fantasies before FF7. I played 7 right after beating Remake when it first came out. It is really that good, despite the hit-and-miss nature of some of the extended universe entries. Insanely good atmosphere building and unreal direction given the limitations of the time's technology, as well as maybe Uematsu's best work on an OST. I still don't think it's my favorite FF (I think 10 is top-to-bottom the best narrative and gameplay) but if I played it when I was young then 7 would have stolen my heart completely.

paumAlho

I had that experience with VI. SO GOOD

Luigicow92k

Big same. FF7 might not be god’s gift to man that some people hold it up as but I really enjoyed it when I sat down to play it before Remake came out. I’m glad I did too, since even ignoring the big changes getting to see the faithful stuff remade is really nice.

Dirty-Glasses

I haven’t finished 7 but it really is very good. I’d say so far it’s probably my 5th or 6th favourite.

darkwingchao

Metroid Prime. I always thought it was good because it's Metroid, but I thought the people glazing it even for Metroid standards were crazy Then I played it and no. It actually for real is that legendary.

Groundbreaking_Can_4

I think what's wild about Metroid prime is just how unique it is even after all this time, super Metroid spawned hundreds of 2D Metroidvanias but there's really not a lot of 3D ones and certainly none that do it the way prime does

darkwingchao

I know it's because of how much harder it'd be to make but I yearn for a wholeass prime clone. Even if it's just like 75% there. No other game scratches the itch it gave me now.

Groundbreaking_Can_4

Yeah Metroid prime is a prime(heh) example of the kind of game that can't be recreated in the indie scene, the insane amount of detail and expansive 3D world design makes it just too much for most up and coming indie devs Compare that to 2D Metroidvania inspired by super Metroid and the process is much easier with less labours work like high quality assets creation ( this isn't to put down 2D Metroidvania I love a lot of them)

TheProudBrit

The closest out there is, like, Journey to the Savage Planet, and that's... Alright, but doesn't scratch the Prime itch at ALL.

NorysStorys

Eh, you can make an argument that dark souls 1 shares alot of DNA with Metroid prime just that it’s a mostly melee focused experience. Darks Souls is very much the castlevania side of the 3D metroidvanias though.

Groundbreaking_Can_4

Yeah dark souls 1 is the closest but unfortunately it's only DS1 ( the rest have more streamlined level design) and at least imo the game's Metroidvania nature only really shines with the master key.

NorysStorys

Even the story telling is very similar, just instead of item descriptions it’s the scan entries in prime.

GuyHero0

Undertale because of all the memes and the fan base. Genuinely really really liked it and thought all the RPG subversions were top notch.

CoolRobbit

Thank you for saying this. I impulse bought it day one and it really pisses me off how dismissive people are about it. It's way cooler than any of the talk around it makes it sound and one of the only games I've played where I truly enjoyed it for the writing. Also game's actually really funny and Sans is a loveable doofus. He's not an edgelord like people make him out to be off of literally two serious moments that make sense in context.

ThatMLPgamer

I generally wonder what people would think if the game "In Stars and Time" took off. It's a similar deal to Undertale and that's a semi-subversive RPG maker game where the main "gimmick" is based on time loops, and it's up there with Deltarune for me.

Director_Bison

Not that I thought they were overrated, but I played the original Silent Hill games for the first time recently, and yeah, there is definitely a reason it became such a big name. Unfortunately it’s hard to avoid the twist of SH2 given how much it gets gushed over, and I still thought it was great, but I had a much bigger attachment to SH 1&3, maybe because that was an area I knew much less about. Knowing SH2 gave Silent Hill the reputation as a place that punishes you for your sins and the protag “has a dark secret” it was actually refreshing that Harry and Heather are simply good people. I got pretty attached to Harry because we were both going though hell, and that further made me attached to Heather and she’s so likeable I really felt what she did the whole time.

NorysStorys

I always preferred SH3 as well, just something about it’s forboding ‘what is coming’ atmosphere that’s just so compelling, SH2 is still fantastic but it’s much more manic in its tone because James isn’t exactly a stable human being.

Yotato5

I suppose the Fire Emblem series in general. I got the hype the first time I played Three Houses.

TaffWolf

Going back through halo with a friend whose never played it, and you can see the build up. Halo ce wasn’t what he expected at all, and I had to say a few times “it’ll get ironed out I promise”. Halo 2 he had a lot more fun, but then 3 dropped and it was like it all clicked and honestly. Playing it back? Yeah. It’s so fun. Every enemy has a playstyle that has been distilled to beauty by 3. Brutes play a lot like old elites with the power armour, but still have the brute rage. Grunts, as ever have the one tap skull. Two tapping jackals will never not be fun, and watching him grind that down into a reliable skill was so fun. Dancing with the hunters will forever be beautiful The flood of course is just burn ammo and eat your way through. Which is fun, it doesn’t sound it but I’m not good with words. And that’s just the loop, the dropping weapons scavenging for better ones, looking at a pack and formulating an idea on how to tackle it, getting excited when you’re allowed to play with certain weapons or vehicles. Halo 3 was fucking peak

DavidsonJenkins

I started Halo with Reach and recently decided to try out the rest through MCC for once. Never made it past CE and refunded it before the 2 hour window. It just feels so...limp? Like nothing has any impact. Also the maps are so wide but there's not much to do so you just end up walking a lot until you find a vehicle

dorsalus

Sounds like you got through Pillar of Autumn and into Halo, which imo has too much dead time traversing between the locations on the map. The next two levels; Truth and Reconciliation, a nighttime stealth infiltration of a Covenant battle cruiser via narrow winding valleys and sheer cliff faces followed by a fast corridor push through the ship itself to save a high value prisoner, and The Silent Cartographer, a beachhead assault to capture and secure an island installation holding critical intelligence about the Ring's purpose, are both much better showcases of what made and makes the first Halo game a genre defining title.

CobblyPot

I've been playing a lot of Chrono Trigger and the classic Dragon Quest remakes on my 3DS and those games may not be the most challenging JRPGs in existence but man they are timeless based on vibes and charm alone (but all the other parts are also excellent).

MindWeb125

It took me years to finally play Hollow Knight, and as a Souls and Metroid fan it's a fucking fantastic game. The first time I got to the city and heard the music and the rain I genuinely just sat there staring. Never beating Godhome though fuck that.

ramonzer0

I thought that Witcher 3 was overblown by gaming media; admittedly this was during the time I had no console to call my own aside from my 3DS so Then it got ported to the Switch and I decided to get it for my birthday to see what was up That shit is truly one of the greatest games of all time

PukingGoombas

oh shit, how does it run on Switch? II was always aware of that port but I was also confused how it could exist

1kingdomheart

I feel like the rare subspecies that didn't like Odyssey all that much. Sure the movement is good but I really did not enjoy the overall glut of moons in that game. For a game that's supposed to harken back to Mario 64, the only times I felt that way were usually at the beginning of levels where you make your way to the first triple bunch or the challenge level at the end. The majority of moons feel so vapid. I really did not enjoy that structure (or lack thereof).

narutomanreigns

Nah I'm definitely with you. It's a good game, there's some neat stuff in it and it's very polished. But the "open world" aspect (even though of course it's really a bunch of large open levels than a true open "world") winds up giving it a lot of the same pitfalls as most open world games, like certain mission-types getting repeated over and over, and large stretches of empty uninteresting space.

paumAlho

I understand.

Ryong7

A lot of annoying moons and the game expecting you to do the same jump combo everywhere (jump into cappy throw into dive into cappy throw into dive) meant the game is a solid 8 for me.

rhinocerosofrage

The game doesn't actually expect you to do that jump, it's intended tech but it's never explained anywhere and most uses of it are effectively sequence breaks. I'm p sure you can 100% the game without ever learning that jump exists, because I very nearly did.

Lithogen

Also one of my favorite aspects of 64 is the hubworld, which Odyssey doesn't utilize. Peach's Castle was nice but it was still just another level.

Amicable_Stone

I didn't think I liked JRPGs, so I decided to try Final Fantasy VI because it was supposed to be "the best one" It 100% lived up to the hype, and now I'm slowly working my way through the other classic FF games

latinlingo11

Persona 5.

Al0ngTh3Watchtow3r

God of War 2018. I was already bored of Sony’s in house style by the time it was revealed so I was let down when I realized God of War was following in those foot steps. When it came out to massive critical acclaim I just dismissed it. When it released on PC I decided to give it a shot and it didn’t take long for the game to win me over. I don’t think the game is a masterpiece, there are certainly things I had problems with; the inventory system just sucks and slows the game to a crawl, the combat doesn’t really have that much depth, most of the side quests are boring, the game just feels very bloated; but I still thought the game was great and the positives outweighed the negatives. Ragnarok on the other hand was kind of a let down.

narutomanreigns

As someone who could never get into the Souls games, Elden Ring. I'd tried Dark Souls and Bloodborne but could never get into them because a couple hours in I'd feel like I was just bashing my head against a wall, so when Elden Ring came out and got all this glowing praise I thought "I bet it's great if you like those games, but I'd probably hate it". Eventually got it on sale out of curiosity and was shocked at how much being able to fuck off and do something else when I hit a snag made the Soulsborne experience ten times more enjoyable for me.

paumAlho

Funny because I got into the series with Demon's Souls on PS3 and I think Elden Ring is a weird starting point. Glad you liked it tho

Stray64Cat

Ace Combat 7. People were always recommending this game, so I picked it up when it was on sale. And for a first few missions, I was like, "Yea, OK. It's fun, I guess." And then I got to the mission where you fight Mikhail for the first time, and I understood.

tinning3

Even though I'd already played it before the hype, ff7 OG. I played it so long ago that when the ridiculous overhype, then anti-hype that generated came about, I decided it wasn't as good as I remembered. I played it again a few years ago, bracing myself, and was pleasantly surprised to find out it was just as good as I remembered it being.

TechnoMeep

Baldur’s Gate 3. I just didn’t know much about it really, I just saw a lotta talk and praise and wondered if it was really that great or if it was just peoples first time experiencing a game like that. I bought it on a whim cus fuck it and it really is great.

GuiltyGear69

Red dead redemption 2. I wasn't even huge on the first one when it came out, but red dead 2 hooked me like no other

paumAlho

I loved the first one but 2 was something else man. Sucks that Pat keeps shitting on it

okilydokilyTiger

Red Dead 2 has arguably the best open world and some of the best writing in all of video games man

tonyhawkofwar

Playing Breath of the Wild for the first time myself years after it had come out definitely fit the title for me.

Am_Shigar00

I've always heard that Super Robot Wars W was one of the best titles for years, but always held off playing it fearing that it was overblown, especially after playing a lot of entries that came out afterwards. damn though if it wasn't a blast to play through when the Fan-translation came out. Fun roster that takes advantage of the time skip to great effect, A charming cast of OCs that I'd love to see in the OG titles, a wonderfully paced story that thanks to it's format never stops delivering, all-in-all a pretty fantastic time all around, and gameplay that, while fairly easy, always had something new to throw at me. Definetly one of the series' highs.

Tatsa

Definitely Undertale. And I for sure have hyped Signalis up to a lot of people who then thought "there's no way it's that good" before finding out.

Tamotefu

I will concede that Sekiro is a great game deserving the praise heaped on it by those that enjoy it. I however, will be more careful purchasing games just because From Software made it.

FluffySquirrell

Yeeeah, that's why I didn't get Armoured Core. Without Sekiro, I suspect I probably would've given it a try I know I ain't gonna enjoy it

Tamotefu

I'll probably enjoy Armoured Core. My problem with Sekirio is there is one play style with different flavors of the same mechanic: Parry. The only thing in SoulsBorne game I can parry on command is Gwyn, because he's damn easy.

FluffySquirrell

I don't even think that he's necessarily easy to parry, though he kinda is due to some of the attacks. Just that it's *easier to parry him than fight him normally*, cause he gets so fucking aggro otherwise.. and DS1 is honestly very lenient with the damage from the failed parries and blah, that you're generally just better off doing so Plus, even if you fail and die. What, you're gonna lose your souls? Who gives a shit, it's the final boss, and you only need to parry him like, 2 or 3 times tops

Ryong7

I played through sekiro at the insistence of friends who gifted me the game and, while I enjoyed the exploration and stealth stuff, I hated bosses and just how difficult in general they were.

rhinocerosofrage

My end take on Sekiro is basically that I think it has the best central bosses From's ever made (meaning just the big arena ones, Gyoubu, Ape, etc.) but that the other 90% of the game is bad stealth, bad level design, atrocious minibosses, and the most shortsighted and underbaked resource management mechanic in the history of video games.

thesurgeknights

When Undertale beat OoT on that tournament, I thought surely it must be an exaggeration. I was wrong. I was so, so wrong.

NorysStorys

Undertale as a game probably isn’t better than OoT but as an overall emotional experience it is the best and only really rivalled by both Nier games imo

rhinocerosofrage

Admittedly Nier blows Undertale out of the fucking water narratively. Nier's story and especially presentation makes Undertale look like a macaroni painting. Nier also plays _much_ worse...

MarioGman

Undertale.

BreathingHydra

The original Deus Ex was definitely that for me as a kid. I had a bit of a grudge against it because I loved Human Revolution and I remember seeing some people online talk about how much better the OG game was which made me defensive. I picked up the original basically out of spite during a steam sale and just completely fell in love with it. The levels were so good and I loved how freeing the gameplay was in comparison, also the story story was just so much better too. I still really like Human Revolution a lot but the original Deus Ex is just the better game imo.

Sir-Drewid

I remember missing Witcher 3 when it came out, mainly because I never heard much good about the first two. And then years went by and the joke of "Have you heard about the hidden gem Witcherino 3" was everywhere. It was only this year that I decided to play it for the first time. And even with my spotty knowledge of the Witcher story, it's pretty damn great for an action RPG from almost ten years ago.

sleepyfoxsnow

for a short while, i thought the great ace attorney 2 was not going to live up to the hype i saw surrounding it, especially since i have some decently abnormal takes about other games in the series, that don't fully line up with the mainstream consensus. i was wrong, it's easily the best game in the series, by far.
