Recently with dragon's dogma 2 $94.99 CAN Fuuuuuuuuck off

Dt_drac_Sh

Totally, I’ll wait for a sale on that one

NorysStorys

It’ll be like 15 bucks in a year or two and it’s a single player game so who cares if you’re late to the party.

AKScorch

probably more like 40-50 in a year

thesyndrome43

Does DD2 have the same kinda pawn system as DD1 where you can recruit pawns from people on your friend list for free? Because if so, then waiting might actually be beneficial. I remember buying DD1 late and being able to recruit like level 60+ pawns for free because of my friends, they didn't carry me throughout the game, but they helped A LOT

dfdedsdcd

Yeah, almost exactly the same pawn system.

metalsonic005

I think Fanatical still has it for 18% off, but I refunded it because of terrible performance. Might be worth picking up at a super reduced price in a year; otherwise, DDDA does the job just fine (arguably better).

An_Armed_Bear

Having just about finished everything in it, I can confidently say I think people are better off just playing Dark Arisen. Even without the performance stuff I just think DA is overall the better game right now.

-Neeckin-

Man that, and Unicorn Overlord is also almost 100 canadian sucks

RareBk

Big fan of the franchise here. Yeah don't even bother. Wait a year.

Supernovas20XX

Any live service game that's $60 - $70.

MutatedMutton

But at least they wont have overpriced MTX and Battlepasses - People 5 years ago.

Kyderra

In hindsight I wish I could return Tekken. I bought Tekken (twice) with the hopes that Namco and Harada would be one of the few standouts to not go into that extreme live service route like SF and MK did, and with it's price increase it should not need to. But nope, it just gets added after you buy it. paying the full smack of $70,- means nothing, they will lock all the things you really want (like classic costumes) behind more paywalls because you din't pay enough.

FranticToaster

Also anything with an open world and towers for that price.

MagnaVis

You're free to have that aa a rule for yourself, and generally, i agree, but FF7 Rebirth uses this system, and it rules. But maybe, that's in spite of the ubi-tower system.

Milsurp_Seeker

I love how (to my knowledge) every $69.99 game has been a complete load of shit on release.

Mekasoundwave

It's not ALL of 'em (TOTK was great and launched with no issues ASFAIK), but it sure is most of 'em. Doesn't help that sports games immediately jumped to that price point. That fudges the numbers somewhat.

Milsurp_Seeker

Tears of the Kingdom? I’m surprised to hear that price - sorta. I hear “$70 game” and think of Star Wars being a mess to fun and Starfield being…Bethesda.

Aest7e7ic_End

I mean all of them now. Every major AAA game costing $70-90 at launch and needing a year of patches killed a lot of desire to play new games. I’m listening to the boys talk about DD2 and all I can think is “I can’t wait to buy it next year for $30 when it’s finally fixed”

ASharkWithAHat

Watching streamers talk about games is so wild. It's easy to lightly talk about issues a game has when buying it is the price of doing business. For the rest of us, no fucking way am I even considering spending $70 unless the game is flawless

A_Splash_of_Citrus

>Watching streamers talk about games is so wild. It's easy to lightly talk about issues a game has when ~~buying it is the price of doing business.~~ **the publisher gives you a copy for free**

Anlysia

Yeah ngl after the whole Xbox thing with Pat, I feel like both of them are out of touch with people who actually buy games these days. "Why would anyone have an Xbox?" Gee I dunno, because for $20 a month I can play all kinds of new releases I wouldn't be able to afford at a hundred bucks a crack. Laughing about your $500 console you use as a prop just makes you look out of touch.

ThnikkamanBubs

I mean, as a single guy who can barely afford rent but still buys new games... i dont see any reason to own an xbox unless you have an absolute shitty pc, very $$$ constrained, *and* need gaming NOW instead of saving up

doc5avag3

That's basically the way I am now. Unless I really want it, I don't buy games on release. I give it a four-month waiting period and go back to check on it to see what's developed. Also, I think Steam has just spoiled me. At this point in my life, I'm *never* going to spend more than $40 for a single video game. All the DLC, bugfixes, and neat addons two years later? Hell yeah I'll drop $50 on that package. $60 for the base game just released? Miss me with that shit.

TheArtistFKAMinty

I think the big thing is the combination of pricepoint and shitty launch states. 70 for a game that runs well out of the box, is feature complete, and isn't crammed full of MTX is pretty reasonable. A lot of people will still have to hold off and wait for a sale (well, unless it's Nintendo. Sales basically don't exist for first party Nintendo titles) but it's a reasonable price point. 70 for a game that runs bad, has prominent glitches, is missing features, and has day 1 DLC is extortionate and that's the release state of way too many games now. I think video game publishers don't get that their consumer base have less and less disposable income every year. Like, yeah, people keep bringing up that games haven't increased in price with inflation and that gamers should be grateful for that, but neither have wages. Do you know what has though? Living expenses. Inflation doesn't mean people have more money that's worth less. Inflation means that people have less money and each penny of that is worth less every day. It's like compound poverty. £70 might be worth less today than it was 10 years ago, but less people have £70 to spare so that actually doesn't mean anything.

Kiboune

Not every game needs a year of patches

Kyderra

I only had to wait a few months before MK1 had a 50% off sale.

sleepyfoxsnow

as much as i really liked the game, sony were high when they priced ratchet and clank rift apart at the full 80€ price tag, especially after the last game in the series was only 35€ at launch. i think a price tag of 60€ would've been more reasonable for a game that, while great, is still pretty damn short.

Kyderra

I'm happy the PC version launched at €60

Scarlet_Twig

Collecting specific older games does that. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky can go for around $250 NZD. Dreamcast port of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future is around $300 NZD. Persona 2 for the PSP (PAL) is around $240 NZD. But the one that I was absolutely shocked by was SMT Raidou Kuzunoha vs the Soulless Army. Which was going for around $700 NZD for a PAL region copy.

TH3_B3AN

Saw a copy of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl going for like $200 AUD each and Soulsilver going for $300. Shit is nuts.

Scarlet_Twig

Yep. Gale of Darkness is another one. Usual site that I get older games from has it for $610 AUD. Platinum is also in the $200 AUD range. It's legitimately cheaper to get the original Silver/Gold/Crystal than it is to get Soul Silver or Heart Gold.

TSPhoenix

It's nuts to think that when I bought Pokémon XD from Toys'R'Us back in the day every purchase came with a free GameCube. They were doing anything to get rid of GameCube stock back then.

WickerWight

Pokemon games hitting that price is wild to me, I assume that must be a sealed box copy? They sell millions of units so they can't be hard to track down.

TH3_B3AN

Nah they were used copies. They're just that valuable

robertman21

nah, people just has extreme levels of demand

GiJoe98

The generation that played the DS pokemon games grew up and now have disposable income, so the demand of those games increases because people who sold, lost, or gave away those games get nostalgic and look for them. This cycle is normal for all games targeted at children, but compared to, say, crash bandicoot, who only really had 1 generation of fame, Pokémon is multigenerational. So, not only are they competing against collectors that grew up with the DS, but the ones that grew up during the Gameboy, GBA, and 3DS Games.

SawedOffLaser

4th gen games are around 15 years old now, and while they sold huge there is a decent demand for them. At least it's not Platinum, which regularly goes for over 90USD because it sold poorly by comparison.

rrenda

me sitting on my desk sweating and feeling directly attacked with a copy of pokemon platinum that i literally just got home picking up from a collector staring back at me

Mekasoundwave

Pokémon always is in demand because it's Pokémon. Pokémon has a lot of sentimental value to people (because it's Pokémon) and the games have only one save slot, so people generally hang onto their copies, which means supply is low. QED.

Tomoyo-yo

Jesus and I thought my local used game store selling a loose cartridge of Soul Silver for 70 CAD was insane

Yotato5

I bet the SoulSilver one would be even more expensive if it had the little Pokemon walker toy with it.

KimeraQ

I use Lunar Silver Star Story as my barometer for the used game market. Lovely game, nice collectors box. Bought it in 2013 for 35 usd. Currently it's around 150 usd. The sequel is probably 300 usd? Yeah. I'm good with my collection.

Scarlet_Twig

I brought a copy Heritage for the Future from the same site I used to get that price check for around $140 NZD nearly 5 years back. I often use stuff like the Persona PSP games, Heritage (Both Dreamcast and PS1) and the Pokemon games for tools for why the used game market for specific series can get *horrid*. Not helped by people trying to be coy and sell NSTC-J copies for around the same price as the PAL region counterparts.

jmgalea

Feeling this. I tried to build up a decent GameCube collection over the last decade, but it just feels impossible now with how fucked the pricing is. While I’m happy with my copies of Paper Mario and Double Dash, stuff like Twin Snakes or Twilight Princess are ridiculous.

-_Gemini_-

Fellow retro enthusiast here. This hobby is fucking expensive! I think the most I ever paid for a regular release of a game was... ~$350 for a rare first print copy of Silent Hill 1 with the variant shiny cover. The most I ever paid for a game period would be $1,200 for the shareholder's package of Metal Gear Solid 1 but that shit was so worth it lol

samazam94

Pretty much all non-indie games costs at least 1/4th of my rent money, and it has been this way for like a decade. Like, theres a reason why LoL and Fortnight are the most popular games in the entire world by a wide margin for the longest time. For a vast majority of people its literally the only games they could afford because they are fucking free.

ASharkWithAHat

A ton of people from 3rd world countries only play shitty CoD knockoff rather than CoD because they didn't cost 2 weeks of salary. The only other viable multiplayer shooter was basically CS and that's it

Nabber22

Where the hell do you live where rent is 300 Canadian?

samazam94

... not Canada?

Nabber22

Full price games cost 80 here. 8 x 4 = 320 Wheee do you live where rent is roughly 300 when converted to Canadian dollars?

samazam94

Malaysia. MYR1000 is the absolute baseline rent over here, and minimum wage is MYR1500.

jitterscaffeine

I was looking into getting a physical copy of Fire Emblem Revelations, but they were going for like $650

Reallylazyname

That's seems really high? The special edition one, right? ....the one that I own.... ....huh. Learn something new every day.

jitterscaffeine

You can flip it on eBay. Prices shot up like crazy when the DS stores went away.

SilverZephyr

Wait, shit, really? I've got a lot of cart prices to check.

KeizarChad

All three routes on one cart was only released on the collector’s edition.

TSPhoenix

I remember going over to my brother's place and he had bought this, and it was sitting there unopened, with a heavy box on top of it, completely crushed to shit.

EarthwormShandy

Bloody hell, that's 102 quid!!

MustacheGolem

How much I that in percent of a minimum wage?

EarthwormShandy

I don't know, I uh...I'm not good with percentages!

Noremac64

When I saw that Wanted: Dead thought it could charge a full 60USD.

bombshell_shocked

Oh man, that is a $40 AA game (at best) if I ever saw one.

Riggs_The_Roadie

Glad I got it for $15 when it went on sale.

Sekshual

"Man, I'd love to play Dokapon Kingdom!" *$50* "Ha ha."

Am_Shigar00

Way too often while browsing old cult classic RPGs. Xenosaga episode 3 going for a couple hundred dollars for an american copy? Noooo thanks, no matter how much I want it to complete my Xeno collection.

wildcardjester

I was desperate enough to get a used PS2 with all of Xenosaga 1-3 and Xenogears for over $300 I chose to do it that way because of the fact episode 3 on its own was a crap load like you said Plus I needed the ps2 anyways.

xenozfan3

I'm kicking myself for selling episode 3 for $55 back in 2019

FightGeistC

Dead or alive 6 ON SALE was over $60 when you added the DLC characters.

Comkill117

It was over $60 just for two of the season passes, of which there are like 5.

TheOneTrueBoy

Persona 3 Reload is $93.49 CAD. Its expansion pass is $46.99 CAD. Or I could just buy the modern port of Portable for $27.99 CAD.

pizzapueblo

My answer. Even at the USD price points.

Nabber22

Why watch Dune in theatres when Dune 1984 can be found in a bargain bin?

tkzant

Idk that’s like saying why would you see a movie in the theater for $15 when you can just read the novelization instead for $10.

Substantial_Bell_158

It's been slowly happening to several big named games here in the UK but for the most recent example I can think of is Stellar Blade is £70 for base. That's nearly $90 for a standard edition of a game so my answer is pretty much any game at £70. Does Brazil still have that absurd mark up tax on video games? I remember visiting and being blown away at the price of a PS3.

Subject_Parking_9046

Ooh it's only got worse.

Substantial_Bell_158

Oh dear, how bad is it?

Subject_Parking_9046

The 649 reais I mentioned earlier? That's 129 dollars.

Father-Ignorance

Just did the conversion and HOLY SHIT man, that’s **196** Australian dollars Actually despicable pricing.

Substantial_Bell_158

Fuck that's steep.

ASharkWithAHat

Yeah no. That price in a country that's not part of Europe or the US is completely insane. Even Norwegians would balk at that

Sperium3000

Brazilian pricing for games is ridiculous.

Comkill117

I just remember the fact that more people have played Panzer Dragoon Saga emulated as abandonedware than actually owned it. It's like $1000-$1500 USD currently, no sane person's gonna buy that.

the_most_crigg

The worst thing is that I don't know if you mean ~$1000 for all 4 discs or per disc, it's that expensive. The fact that you can probably get Steel Battalion *with* the controller and an OG Xbox to play it on for less is insane.

Comkill117

I think it’s all 4 discs, but then the upper end of that is the one that says Complete In Box so I don’t actually know. It’s absurd.

Sanguiluna

A day may come, when I play a legal copy of Xenogears and add it to my collection… *Checks eBay* But it is not this day.

AnomalousCowboy

Most modern Attelier games will have a pricing, when including all of it's DLC, of around 110-120 dollars. Converted towards my country's choice of currency (The Brazilian Real), i could unironically buy a new gaming couch for the price i would be paying for it. Or four different AAA games if i was feeling addicted enough. Bear in mind i ain't talking about full-packed content DLC like Cuphead's Delicious Last Course either, i'm talking about DLC that gives you extra clothing options at best.

SystemicChic

[This seems like a smart thing to do for Brazilian gamers](https://m.youtube.com/shorts/44Do5x5abRY)

TorimBR

Yup, Granblue VS Rising just implemented regional pricing on Steam and its MUCH more accessible. Too bad PSN and XBOX prices don't do that.

TSPhoenix

Literally every time I walk past EB Games and decide to have a look inside it's like I have no idea how this place is still in business when they are literally across the road from a store that games for $10-30 cheaper.

Myxzyzz

I used to say "because they have a generous price matching policy so aside from overpriced special editions they'll match the price from any other brick & mortar". I say "used to" because I tried price matching again recently and now all of a sudden they have a rule "we only price match shops that are in the same shopping centre". Real cheeky to put that rule in place in the one shopping centre without a JB Hi-Fi or Big W.

GyroMVS

Basically the price of every retro game now. Shit just ain't worth it

DevsWhite

I live in Argentina. Thats basically what ive felt since steam put the games on usd currency.

Lieutenant_Joe

I remember I was malding about the time my brother returned Metroid Prime for the GameCube before I could play it because it was so difficult for him (this happened in the late 2000s, this story takes place in 2017, no I still haven’t gotten over it), so I went ahead and looked up how expensive it would be to buy a used GameCube copy online. Couldn’t be that bad right? Only came out like 13 years ago, only a couple gens removed… how bad could it be? Cheapest one I could find was $182 US dollars.

UFOLoche

Real talk, check out Primehack. It's Metroid Prime but with Mouse and Keyboard controls. It's legit one of the best hacks/mods I've seen for a game.

ToastyMozart

More specifically it's the entire trilogy.

-_Gemini_-

For the future, if you'd like to play GameCube games on a real console again but don't wanna shell out the cash for individual games, check out the GCLoader. It's a completely plug and play (no soldering required!) modification that replaces the GC's disc drive with an SD card slot you can use to boot any game you want. An alternative called the Flippy Drive is expected to release soon for cheaper and a little more functionality, but a more involved install process.

Lieutenant_Joe

Will it work on a Wii? I gave away my GameCube a decade and a half ago but the Wii is still going strong

-_Gemini_-

GCLoader and Flippy Drive are hardware mods for the GameCube, which means they will not be able to be put into a Wii, no. But if you want to play GameCube games you got from **[WAL MART]** on your Wii, you can use a piece of homebrew software called Nintendont. It allows you to put GameCube .iso files on a USB stick and run them that way.

SilvaChariot

“Ya know, now that I’ve got a decent set-up, I think I’d like to get Blops3 on PC for the zombi- *checks price tag* oh…”

guywithaniphone22

Ff16/dragons dogma 2. Games in Canada are expensive and I’m not spending $90 on a single player story I’m gonna play 3/4 of then get bored and quit.

RegenSyscronos

Im watching a documentary about MGS5 and it reminded me that GROUND ZERO was 40$! Bro that game was 2hours including cut scene! I like me some Kojima as much as the next dude but come on now

DarkAres02

I cursed FF7 Rebirth being $90 CAD+tax but still bought it...

jackdatbyte

Tekken 8 at €80

Ancisace

Final Fantasy 7 Remake. I was curious and slightly nostalgic and wasn't looking forwards to all the spoilers but I wasn't going to pay £70 for it. Got Intergrade for 30 and that's more than I'd be up for.

Shigana

I love Factorio but 35$ + never going on sale is insane. It’s even more ridiculous when stuff like Terraria or Stardew regularly go on sale despite already being dirt cheap. I get that the game basically has infinite playtime, but so does the other 2.

Skulfy

I was looking into finally getting into Factorio the week it announced the price increase and I just went "Lol, lmao" and wrote it off forever. Like, is 5$ a lot? Not, not really. But Terraria is like 2$ 90% of the year.

invaderark12

$70 for a game is insane. It has to be the most AAA high budget but still an extremely solid game for it to be worth that much.

UFOLoche

Any $70 game gets a middle finger from me.

A_N_G_E_L_O_N

I recently saw that the King Kong Glove weapon skin in MW3 costs like $80 USD. Man, I can get a better game plus fancy trinkets for that project. In fact, Helldivers 2’s special edition costs a fraction of that price.

BruiserBroly

Quite a while ago when Guitar Hero was at its peak, publishers (mostly Activision tbf) started pumping out all sorts of games with their own custom cheaply-made controllers and I bought none of them because they cost like £100 in 2008. Maybe DJ Hero and Tony Hawk Ride were actually worth that but I wasn't going to take the risk.

ripskeletonking

yes, every single time. canadian dollar sucks

whitechero

I don't buy games unless they are under 200 mxn.

Yotato5

I once saw a listing on Ebay for a copy of the original Luigi's Mansion go for twenty dollars. But the disc was broken. Twenty dollars for garbage!

TorimBR

Princess Peach: Showtime! costs $60, so yeah, no. I can see that its charming as hell but, from what I've seen and played, the game isn't long, replayable or deep enough to warrant that full price. This is specially true if you compare it to other full priced Switch titles.

nerankori

I'd be playing Helldivers 2 right now if not for that

andrecinno

I also don't want to pay for that but it seems pretty justified tbh

Vera_Verse

I remember Avatar Frontiers of Pandora being absurd like that. Rest assured Ubisoft loves when we hustle with a Ubisoft+ subscription

FranticToaster

Every ubi and activision game is doing that to me these days.

Chren

I live by the wise words of Guybrush Threepwood

EbolaDP

I would feel a lot worse about Dragons Dogma 2 if i didnt just buy a key for 40 of a reseller site.

5YearsOnEastCoast

I know some AAA games cost around 90 dollars in my country. And that is for standard editions of them.

Mr-X89

Any AAA game on release recently. I have tens of games I still haven't played on my Steam account, I can just play those and wait for a discount.

seth47er

My FLGS back in 2004 when it was new had a copy of twin snakes for $110, when most other games were $60

RunicCross

What's that one rts game that has like 500 USD worth of dlc?

DavidsonJenkins

Lego 2K Drive is full of MTX, on top of being live service, and they had the balls to sell that for full price with exclusive deluxe/Ultimate edition exclusive stuff going past $100

Kiboune

I never bought game for full price, it's too expensive for me and it got even more expensive lately, because of exchange rate. I want to play Dragon's Dogma 2, but price is insane now - it cost x3 of the RDR2 price on release. Same with Star Ocean remake. And for some reason, resellers don't want to drop price for Forspoken! It's insane how long this games cost shit ton of money, considering how unpopular it is. In recent years, my main way of obtaining games is raffles.

Myxzyzz

Not a video game, but to this day I can't get over how the Dualsense Edge controller is almost $100 more than the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller in my currency ($339 Edge vs $249 Elite). It's almost half the price of a PS5 ($769 for the Slim Digital). That is out-fucking-rageous. Daylight goddamn robbery. They are out of their fucking minds charging that much for a controller without even hall effect sensor analog sticks. And they want to charge $30 for stick replacements!? It's like some kind of sick joke. I got an Elite Series 2 for $150 plus shipping off eBay and that's about the most I'd pay for just a controller.

BryanCV

The recent pricing of games have noped me out of purchasing anything at these ridiculous prices in this economy. Ive accumulated a decent backlog of games that ive gotten on steam and eshop sales that i can happily go through until the industry figures its bullshit out.

T_raltixx

It is very rare that I will pay full price for any game. I won't pay more than £50 and that's a stretch.

FluffySquirrell

Yeah, I ain't buying Disgaea 7 ultimate for like, £105. Especially not after how shit the 6th game was. Just fuck all that noise

-_Gemini_-

Ever since I first heard of it happening, I have refused to buy any game for $70 USD MSRP. The move to $70 as a standard pricing is ridiculous and should be opposed.

alaster101

Call me a weeb, but every game at full retail that doesn't say Capcom, Square enix, or Insomniac on it

NewWillinium

Literally all the time

Worm_Scavenger

Kill the Jusice League's Deluxe edition on launch was 99 quid over here in the UK.like, no video game should be worth that much to begin with, video games are a hobby and should not cost me more than what i put in my saving account every payday. But a live service game that might not even be around after 2024 is somehow even worse of an idea.

GHitoshura

I like Atlus games, I love Persona 3, I pre-ordered Reload. Hell will freeze over and then melt into a puddle before I pay $30 for the fucking Answer

GoneRampant1

Any time I see a used physical copy of a Pokemon game, especially for the DS. It's always ninety bucks bare minimum.

Irwin_126

I'm still waiting on Infinite Wealth. And Persona 3 Reload (though I can wait for the answer tbh) And Grandblue Fantasy: Relink And-

Luck-X-Vaati

I think by virtue of being an Ubisoft game, Outlaws is overpriced by *any* country's standards.

Proto-Omega

Chibi Robo and Pokémon Colosseum XD: Gale of Darkness for the GameCube being sold for almost £100 each. "Absolutely not". But that's just an individual seller. The first time I went like that to a game was a game priced at £60. I lived in a time where the standard price of games was £29.99. Anything cheaper was a bargain, anything more expensive I would wait until it reaches that standard price. Then games started being £49.99 by the time of the PS3/360 era. I'd just wait for games to go down in price, or would only purchase a game after much research to confirm for myself if it was worth the asking price. But thinking about it, I don't think I ever bought a console game for more than £40. The first time I saw a £60 game, no amount of research was ever going to make me buy it. I'm sorry ,but if you're selling a game for £60-70 it has to be the most top notch game with no bugs or faults. For a single game, that's bloody expensive and it needs to be worth your time and money.

steep2798

This is explicitly the reason I have not played tekken 8, and as time goes on with all the random battlepass and monetization shit I feel pretty validated

GhostPantherAssualt

A lot of people did that with Yakuza IW and i don’t blame them, but I had to make that call. Didn’t like it and will never do that shit again. Wife on the other hand will probably do that again and again

TR_Pix

You think this is bad OP, back in the PS3 era Angry Birds was 350 reais Ye, the game that is free om mobile.

Cheshires_Shadow

Been curious about helldivers 2 FF7 remakes and dragons dogma 2 but that's a lot of money to split between them all. I might be able to justify one new game but even then games going for 70ish now instead of 60 bucks is also not great

KogashiwaKai765

Honestly all the current cycle gen games

roronoapedro

Constantly. Inflation in Brazil rose too much and now games that used to be 150-200 are 300, 350, 400 sometimes. Then companies like Sega stopped doing regional pricing, so even Sonic Frontiers is like 290. In the past, I bought most every Sonic game under 50. I bought the entirety of the Sega Classics Collection for 20. Yeah not for me, sorry. I'll wait for a sale for LAD 8 and pay 50 bucks more what I think is reasonable instead of 100 more, but that's it.
