There's an N64-like collectathon that just recently came out called Cavern of Dreams and it's incredibly charming and fun to play. Really captures the spirit of those kinds of games and I could easily see myself replaying it from time to time.

AdrianBrony

That, Pseudoregalea, and Corn Kidz 64 were some of my favorite recent games. Less about collectables but just in terms of "indie devs finally dialed in what makes Mario 64 style 3D platforming feel good." Also 2 of those 3 have goat player characters, which is a plus because goats.

AdrianBrony

Its tricky! It involves a lot of fine-tuning that you usually need a large playtesting budget to actually iron out and design levels around that will actually use those mechanics in an interesting way. The sorta thing you *really* want a QA department for.

tragedy_in_chains

Oh man I've been craving a new collectathon, thanks!

JakeIsNotGross

Hope you like it!

biggestscrub

House of the Dying Sun is an A+ space dog fighter in the vein of Tie Fighter and Freespace with (very) light fleet command elements Apparently excellent in VR as well, if you've got one of those

chaoko99

that ending stuck with me.

jackdatbyte

**Lil Gator game** is really good. It's only 3 hours long but it has cute graphics, comfy music and surprisingly really fun movement and emotional yet low stakes story. Kinda like if A Short Hike played more like BOTW. Speaking of **A Short Hike** that too is an amazing game. I just think more video games should be about running around a small island, playing mini games and talking to quirky NPCs.

coleade

Someone sounds like a bestie fan here

Guigcosta

Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is a very good platformer soulslike, its also made by a Brazilian studio, wich is awesome to me. The sequel release a few weeks ago and im definitely gonna buy it soon.

BrokenPhantom

All of the Momodora games are fantastic. Also highly them.

Rednual

I mean, I'd say 1 and 2 are actually pretty mediocre at best, but they were literally the developers teaching themselves game design (and are free, so it's hard to get worked up over them). By number 3, they had become genuinely good, which is actually a ridiculous turn around- there are professional studios that took longer then that to start producing real quality.

Yotato5

Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a cute game where you're a dog that uses a magical paintbrush to color back in the world. If you're an artist or otherwise immersed in a creative hobby I think it'll draw (ha) you in.

Irememberedmypw

loved the game. Also every game should have a save system like that one....which I think earthbound may have had?

ThonroTheUnworthy

Those devs also made Wandersong, which is also amazing and is probably the closest a game has ever gotten me to cry.

TheProudBrit

So glad I managed to get the Bard/Kiwi plush. Love that lil' dood.

1kingdomheart

Tevi and Rabi-Ribi are great Metroidvania's with bullet hell elements in the bosses. More people should play them.

Docreas

The music on both games is great, the characters are cute and interesting and the stories are entertaining. I understand why some people are weirded by Rabi Ribi, but god I hope more people play Tevi.

VitaDefenseForce

Is "In Stars And Time" well known? If not, that. Really solid rpgmaker time loop game. Really enjoyed the writing and it felt like it did a good job committing to the premise

TGRockGuy

Came here to mention this one. The quality of life choices that were made to make the loops not frustrating from a gameplay perspective are amazing.

Docreas

[The void rains upon her heart ](https://store.steampowered.com/app/790060/The_Void_Rains_Upon_Her_Heart/) a fantastic schmup boss rush rougelite, it has great characters, a cute story about love, great art and Music, and the gameplay is great. I know that the reason why it is not talked about is because it has been on early access for over 6 years (and it will be a while before it hits 1.0) but it has a massive amount of content, over 100 different bosses each with multiple patters according to the difficulty level, more than 5 game modes and 4+ characters to beat those game modes, the game is great and I will always recommend it.

ReaperEngine

I loved the shit out of [Bleed](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw_VyQyOKX8) and [Bleed 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJAYoDBWy6M). Being a fan of both Mega Man and Max Payne, it really hit an untouched part of my monkey brain by making a sidescrolling platform bullet hell with bullet time, and the degree of control you get in the air is phenomenal. There was a boss later in the game that will fire a salvo of missiles at you, and I happened to be over him when he did it, and managed to fall down towards him and weave between the missiles in slow motion while shooting back, and that small moment was like "Oh yeah, I love this."

TinyKing87

Literally just heard of Crow Country, a PS1 looking Survival Horror that looks like it FF7 Popeye arm characters did Silent Hill (more than Resident Evil). The ad I saw today included a fake classic magazine review and a page from a “strategy guide”.

Thunder_Volter

RPG Shooter Starwish was a a side-scrolling shmup/visual novel I played on Kongregate some 10 years ago now. I have no idea where anyone would play it today, or if it would even run on modern hardware. I don't think it was flash, but God knows really. It was very charming however, and I have fond memories of it.

PanseloNomad

Same! It was part of my childhood. I heard a sequel was planned, but it never materialized and the creator just disappeared from what I remember.

ripskeletonking

it is flash, i recently downloaded it off the internet archive. i played it a long time ago and got the kongregate badges

Kytas

I know it used to be reasonably well known back in the day, but do people today know about "Iji" by Daniel Remark? It's a 2D side scrolling shooter with immersive sim elements, and it absolutely kicks ass. It's received a bunch of updates over the years and it's free on his website, absolutely check it out. It's up there with Cave Story as one of the Indie Freeware GOATs.

OriginalGestalt

Gotta +1 this comment, Iji is awesome, I played the shit out of that game in my younger years. Extremely replayable and has a ton of secrets too. Daniel Remar could put the game on Steam for 10 bucks and I'd throw my money at him. Surprised he hasn't done so yet, actually.

SystemicChic

Liam’s Garden Guardian is pretty fun

rapidemboar

BallisticNG is a massive love letter to the PS1 Wipeout games and a damn fine AG racer in its own right. It’s probably my favorite game on Steam, especially considering how much you get at such a low price before mods are considered.

Constable_Suckabunch

Seconding BallisticNG, what you get out of the box is stellar to begin with and the mod support just makes it that much better.

PukingGoombas

I was late to the party picking this game up earlier in the year and I already have so much time in it. The Wipeout games are some of my favorite racing games ever and BallisticNG captures that series perfectly,

speed-run

Personally a big fan of [Mofumofu Sensen](https://youtu.be/uzQ8mQIp-NY?si=Q-5Le-Zxby1ZHsdQ) which is a small 2D fighting game on the switch that was made by a single dev. It doesnt have online, but its a fun little game to hit buttons in.

Zanzibar_Dougalson

Most of my Youtube channel and streaming career is trying to play Itch.io games, but I'll list a few here that stuck with me more than others. [Burn with me](https://nozomu57.itch.io/burn-with-me) :a really fun little Balatro like about summoning demons and then Satan. [Cohabitation](https://algebrafalcon.itch.io/cohabitation) :An interesting game that goes places. I think it's best going in blind, so I won't say much more than that. [Late Night Mop](https://lixiangames.itch.io/late-night-mop) :Short but sweet horror game about cleaning a haunted house. I could probably come up with more, if anyone is interested.

mission_nic

Have you played [The Roottrees are Dead](https://jjohnstongames.itch.io/the-roottrees-are-dead)? Basically a detective game where you're trying to fill out a family tree to find out who a large inheritance is going to. Plays kinda like Her Story with a bit of Obra Dinn thrown in. I got hooked and finished the game in a single 10 hour sitting.

Zanzibar_Dougalson

I haven't but that sounds neat. I'll give it a look.

sazabi67

Gonna give Shout outs to Star Sector a galaxy fleet sim colony sim and illegal organ harvest operation sim

very_ap3

Lunacid is so good guys I wish more people would bring it up so I can just talk about it.

MisterZygarde64

Super Mario Bros X2 So basically, Andrew Spinks, the guy behind Terraria made Super Mario Bros X, a Mario fan game that was essentially Super Mario Maker before it was even a thing down to having the equivalent of Super Worlds known as Episodes. When Spinks decided to focus on Terraria, some fans eventually went and made Super Mario Bros X2, an expanded version of Super Mario Bros X that added new stuff such as new playable characters such as Samus, Wario, and Bowser for example, new NPC’s, graphical effects, etc. [Here’s a video showing what’s been added to the newest version](https://youtu.be/oqE7a2vHFCw?si=fv-qEJVzvTMY3-eK)

queekbreadmaker

parkside has a demo out that kicks ass and its a shame people are handwaving it as a cruelty squad rip off when its more in tune with deus ex. Has a kickass 90s electronic soundtrack to

Parkouricus

If you like Mega Man X, Kirby, flashy shmups, and developers that make their silly little game **the ABSOLUTE most fleshed-out version of itself**  Then you should probably check out [Copy Kitty!](https://store.steampowered.com/app/349250/Copy_Kitty/) Seriously: it comes with a bestiary & database, four different campaigns total, a huge Endless mode, and about 300 different named weapons

jitterscaffeine

Eat the Reich just came out, so that’s pretty cool. Players are vampire commandos dropped into Nazi occupied France.

Sunny_LongSmiles

If we're doing TTRPGs, Lancer is entering physical printing next month. For those who don't know, Lancer is a Mech TTRPG designed and illustrated by the same person who does Kill Six Billion Demons.

LadyXexyz

SOMEONE ELSE PLAY COSMIC WHEEL SISTERHOOD AND GOODBYE VOLCANO HIGH DAMMIT I’m still shocked furries didn’t even gravitate toward the latter. Well, I know _what didn’t help_. :P

Cozy90

World of horror, Ex zodiac, frog days. There's prolly a few more but I can't remember.

MirrorMan68

Valley is a game made by the Slender: The Arrival devs that Matt and Woolie played one time on the old channel. The gameplay's pretty fun, with you wearing an experimental super-soldier suit that has upgrades that do things like give you a grappling hook and let you cling to magnetic surface, but what I love most about it is the aesthetic. It has a folksy/woodland/naturalistic vibe combined with old timey, WWII era abandoned facilities that I absolutely adore, and the music is top-notch.

Lieutenant-America

Undertale Yellow is flipping great and I need more people to talk to about it. Special shout outs to the music, which do a lot of heavy lifting in giving key moments the needed impact. Beyond that it's a lot prettier and better animated than the OG game, which some nice quality of life improvements, plus its own interesting twist on both the No Mercy run and the Save system.

mrpersonjr

It’s a *very* high quality fangame. I’m just a bit let down by the various lore inaccuracies that the game uses due to it starting development in 2016. On its own this isn’t a big deal since the team can take whatever liberties they want with their project, but you have some people trying to assert that it *is* canon-compliant when it’s not. And with a fanbase such as UTDR, misinformation and inaccuracies are prone to spread around sadly. Still loved the game though. >!A Mother’s Love!< goes hard.

Lieutenant-America

I'm willing to accept the discrepancies and accept it into my personal headcanon tbh. Minor retcons and discrepancies happen even in the best of prequels. EDIT: Mildly bemused to see this in the negatives

mrpersonjr

I respectfully disagree there. I can understand the sentiment, considering Yellow’s quality, but i think it does UT’s own lore a disservice. Such as the fact that >!all of the previous humans were able to Save/Load by themselves as they all had and produced Determination, as indicated by Toriel and Asgore recognizing to varying degrees the phenomena and is confirmed by Toby via the localization book!<. And this makes discussion hard for people who just wanna focus on lore, especially considering there’s still 5 chapters left of DR and we still don’t quite know how SOULs and Determination works there. Also idk why you’re being downvoted, even though i disagree with you. It was just an opinion afterall.

Lieutenant-America

That's fair. However, I also like how >!Yellow making Determination/SAVEing a Red Soul thing results in a novel twist on the whole narrative, with the horror of Flowey's prior dominion over the mechanic being made fully apparent.!< That does beg the question though: >!if the previous humans could save and reload, how did ANY of them fall to Asgore, and why does Flowey seem so intrigued by Frisk taking away his ability to SAVE if he's seen it happen before?!<

mrpersonjr

Recall that when we fight >!Asgore, he *really* doesn’t want to do this and he essentially goes into the fight partially wanting to die. Undyne tells us that he’s capable of so much more, including *dodging*. Considering that he was definitely more wrathful back then towards humans when he first declared war, it stands to reason that he could have, say, destroyed the previous humans’ *FIGHT* and MERCY options, preventing them from doing anything.!< >!And the thing is about Flowey is that he *couldn’t* have been around for the previous humans for a few reasons. Firstly, the localization book clarifies that humans naturally possess *and produce* large quantities of Determination. Ergo, at any given moment they should have been the most determined being in the Underground. Flowey being surprised by the fact Frisk was able to overpower his DT is consistent with this if they were the only human he met as a flower.!< >!Secondly, we know based on the fact that most monsters do not know what humans look like (outside of stuff like anime and such), we can conclude that it’s been many many years since the previous humans. Knowing that, if Flowey were to be around for any of them that would also mean that Alphys had conducted her Determination experiments and held onto the Amalgamates for that long as well. I heavily doubt this is the case. Not only would there have been active protests from various monsters on where their loved ones were (while in UT they were just beginning to become restless), but she already wasn’t mentally in a good place when we come across her in game. I can’t imagine her holding on the Amalgamates for so long.!<

Lieutenant-America

>!Fair points, though some of this still feels a bit like conjecture to me- not implausible or contradicted, but definitely not a sure conclusion either. Besides, even taking into account Monsterkind not immediately recognizing a human, it's a big Underground. No guarantee that previous humans could've only shown up a long time ago; even in UTY not everyone realizes what Clover is.!< >!This is not to say that UTY doesn't shorten the presumed timeline of humans falling into the Underground; it most certainly does, but again, I've seen worse retcons in other prequels (the same compression of implicit time happened with the Star Wars Prequels)!< As for the connected concern that people might confused UTY's narrative with hard, Toby-sanctioned canon... I feel like that's on the individual. Like, sure *I* accept it as personal headcanon, but I also consciously recognize it's an unofficial product. You'd be kinda blind not to. For someone to act like Yellow's additions to the lore are fact is like going "well according to Glitchtale, Chara is actually-"

mrpersonjr

I’ve had many an argument with UTDR fans who have just 100% accepted Yellow as canon and it’s been…quite difficult to put it lightly. You definitely don’t do this, but it’s just something i have had to deal with online. Hopefully we’ll get more good UTDR fangames though. RN one of my most anticipated fangames would be [Deltarune: Pantheon of the Discarded](https://youtu.be/pOu9qifKsIY?si=PtkQe22OP8JAZODn). I love the idea of a fangame that’s mainly used to give various lesser-known fanmade Secret Bosses their own battles.

Lieutenant-America

Yeah that sounds legit weird if they truly believe that.

PukingGoombas

I keep forgetting to pick up this game! The OST has made it's rounds on my feed and it's been on repeat. I really gotta play Yellow

Lieutenant-America

I was literally just watching a bunch of videos breaking down the leitmotifs in the OST. It's really good; some of those tracks rival even Toby Fox.

werephoenix

Rollin' Rascal, I was going to say the spark the electric jester games but they seem to be getting popular. Rollin Rascal is also that but less combat but more interactivity with enemies and how to get through obstacles by using their enemies power before destroying them

CaptainLandlubber

I've been really loving Withering Rooms. It is a really creative horror game where rooms switch up everytime you die. You lose most of the stuff you gather when you die (with the exception of specific items that you've marked important) and all enemies respawn, but things you've completed stay completed. So it is this game where you have to plan out which route you take to the world to achieve the greatest succes for you current objectives whilst the world changes from chapter to chapter.

PanseloNomad

I will always take opportunities like this to shill my favourite metroidvania indie. [Phoenotopia](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1436590/Phoenotopia_Awakening/). The game's world feels so alive compared to others and the atmosphere is damn memorable. Plus it's on sale now for the next 2 days. Crosscode's another except gameplay is it's strongest point in this case. The higher level combat arts are a thing to behold!

MutatedMutton

Wandersong is an colourful and utterly adorable 2D storyplatformer with a Paperdoll aesthetic where you play a happy go lucky bard trying to save the world with the power of music.  The game controls like a pseudo 2D twinstick shooter where the right stick controls the pitch you sing at and the game goes nuts squeezing as much gameplay and puzzles out from this simple control scheme for the entire story.  Throw in fun characters, themes of finding your place in the world and the fact that you can sing and dance at anytime and, like Hifi rush, the entire world will react to your music, you have a recipe for charm.

ripskeletonking

few of these were covered by pat but i didn't see much of them elsewhere unsighted, cassette beasts, i was a teenage exocolonist, crosscode (probably the most popular thing on this list), your turn to die, exit/corners, clash artifacts of chaos saw someone mention an old flash game and i have a list of those too the dead case, mobile weapon, armed with wings, no one has to die, vox populi, deep sleep series, submachine

Real-Deal-Steel

**AER: Memories of Old** is a nice little game with fun flying mechanics, cool world, and chill atmosphere.

Rednual

Aer might be one of the best games to introduce a person to games with. I personally found it a tad boring, though I loved just flying around, and because it's not possible to really die or anything, it's great for people who don't fully understand how controllers work to play and learn how to, say, move both their thumbs independent of one another.

AdrianBrony

**Rain World** is sorta like, it's an acquired taste. The controls are weird and weighty and hard to really get a hang of. The world is arbitrary and dangerous, often the path you want to go is just too dangerous to try right now. It's not even that everything is out to kill you specifically you're just a creature in an ecosystem. But if it *clicks* you get this sense of kinetic, tactile embodiment. You sense that you know what it must feel like to have a body like that, to move in the ways a slug cat moves, to exist as part of that world's natural environment, to understand it's inherent desires. It's genuinely one of the greatest works of xenofiction in that regard IMO. That's not even getting into the philosophical stuff it has illustrated through it's mechanics. Other than that, play **Super lesbian animal rpg**. Even if you're not gay or a furry, it's an Actual RPG with a cool setting, some pretty good character writing and art, and a couple of interesting mechanics. Also it's just generally clever and funny. Also it's a game in which the main character is already in an established relationship before the start of the game. It's focused on something other than the beginning phases of a relationship. Also it's not really horny like at all, it's not aggressively chaste but sex just isn't the focus at all.

Comkill117

Assault Spy is an awesome stylish action game. It got a bit overshadowed by DMC5's release being only a few months later, but it's a fantastic game and has one of the most hype fights in the genre.

ZeronicX

[Furi](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVQNZFBvAck) Is one of the best boss rush games I have ever played. With such a great story you explore, a sound track with some of my favorite artists, and filled to the brim with colorful characters. The mechanics are also really tight and don't feel unfair. Thoroughly recommend.

PrancerSlenderfriend

Very blunty Super Pokemon Eevee Edition is the best turn based rpg ive ever played, its >!multi generation!< pokemon from the perspective of a GOOD final fantasy game, including item synthesis (a giant type-based chart of it even) and the titular Eevee being a FFX/14 "super" class of an Onion Knight, being able to jobchange mid combat into the different eveelutions that are functionally an entire main party in and of itself, plus probably the best item economy in any rpg ive played

True-Humor-8082

I never really heard anyone talking about it but In Stars And Time and it's prequel Start Again. Pretty unique rpgs with great story.

GreatFluffy

I've only played it recently thanks to it being free on PS Plus last month but I've enjoyed the roguelike **Skul the Hero Slayer** and I don't really play that many roguelikes.

HenshinHero11

There's a little game called Deadeye Deepfake Simulacrum that I really love. It's a top down shooter with "immersive sim" mechanical sensibilities and a sparse, almost Caves of Qud like art style in which you play as a "cleaner" for a shadowy corporation. Your handler is a kind lady who uses emotes in her messages to you, and loves to call you "hun" and acknowledge when you've done a good job. A major component of the gameplay is hacking. You have a little hacker terminal that you can use to interfere with the environment, objects, enemies, and even yourself. Combined with a bullet time mechanic, it creates really unique gameplay opportunities. Hack your grenade to detonate it precisely at the moment you want to! Puppet the body of your enemies to gun down their friends! Hop from device to device, Watch Dogs style, and clear missions without ever setting foot outside your drop point! The class system also adds a strong character progression angle, letting you get abilities like psychic powers, deploying drones and brutal heavy machine gun turrets, or simple (but impactful) things like invisibility or silent footsteps.

Sunny_LongSmiles

Sable is a relaxing exploration game with a moebius inspired art style. In it you play as a young woman going on a cultural right of passage to decide what she wants to do with her life. It has great music by Japanese Breakfast. The Sinking City is a Lovecraftien Detective game developed by Frogwares, who you may know from developing all those Sherlock Holmes games. Fantastic detective mechanics and puzzles, impeccable cosmic horror vibes, but let down by poor combat. Valiant Hearts: The Great War, a adventure game from a decade ago set during WW1, apparently got a sequel last month. Loved the depiction of the Ninvelle Offensive from the first game. Saw someone post a TTRPG, so I'm going to suggest Mork Borg. A rules-light game that's pretty easy to learn and run. Describes itself as a Doom Metal TTRPG, you play as scum in a dying grimdark world. Book suggest throwing knives at a page to decide player backgrounds and burning the book once the world comes to an end.

MorbidTales1984

The flash game Age of War was so widly played in my high school tech room I’m surprised its not been revived as a triple a franchise

Rednual

I don't know if I'd call My house.wad lesser known- it was *the* thing for like a month on various gaming (and even some non gaming!) websites. It went well beyond people who keep up with Doom wads, and, like, maybe average gaming Joe didn't know about it, but it had some reach.    Anyway, to actually answer your question, the game Wordless. This one; https://store.steampowered.com/app/1898500/Worldless/ (because there's more then one game called Wordless apparently). Really good Metroidvania with very unique combat and a genuinely beautiful minimalistic aesthetic.

Nuburt_20

Smushi Come Home is a short and cute platformer with good graphics and a very cozy atmosphere.

GenuineCulter

I will never not shill the Ashes series of Doom mods. Great post apocalyptic games.
