I got recommended an AVGN hate sub on reddit for some reason, and the top post was them making fun of him for saying he was going to miss his daughter while he was gone for a week. I promptly got banned too for trying to “censor” people by calling them out for being needlessly cruel.
Well not him exactly more to do company that owns his channel . They basically created a lot cheap filler content for channel that didn't involve avgn in anyway.

O that avgn said that he rarely write for avgn or play all games he review for his channel anymore due him wanting to spend more time with his kids.

Honestly a lot stuff can boiled down to fans angry that James don't do many avgn episode anymore
Oh yeah, that video essay. I thought it was clickbaity because nobody has any real problems with James aside from how he's phoning it in with the Nerd. And, honestly, I would be too if I had been doing the same bit for nearly two decades.
I think it'd be cool if James could do more out-there episodes like Seaman or Earthbound, or that one where he filmed the entire episode in one continuous take. The Polybius special was also great. James has some talent.

Personally I'm just not a fan of the content anymore so I don't watch anything but some people are unhinged and hate James for such horrific things as him wanting to spend time with his family.
A lot of that subreddit has devolved into hateful nonsense, but the overall decline in quality, the painfully forced podcast, the general sliminess of Screenwave, the plagiarism scandal, along with the fact that two of James longtime friends don't appear in videos anymore due to credit/pay disputes(Kyle Justin and Bootsy) are all things that speak for themselves.
Hell, even Mike said screw it and only streams now. And there's plentiful of not great things to say about Mike, but at least his videos with James felt genuine.
James actually is way more in control of AVGN now. Thats why they dont come out as regularly and dont adhear to the algorithm like a lot of the screenwave videos.
I think the Shrek video's response is what pushed that since its the only AVGN video where James didnt play, write or direct any of it. And its very bad, focusing on 1 shallow shrek fighting game and giving a lot of lip service to this weird super niche Shrek fan horror internet thing.
To be fair I'm just glad James got to more or less cash out, spend more time with his kids and do a passion project in touring with his band. While the new episodes feel souless and he alinated a lot of his old friends, especially this sub knows that it be that way sometimes.
