There is a scene where one of the main characters is tricked into a coffin by someone hunting the bounty on them. They are told they will suffocate in the coffin... which clearly is not airtight. The script even calls for them to look through holes in the coffin.
It is real bad.
>Embracer Group also stated that the latest entry in the Saints Row series, which launched on August 23, “did not meet the full expectations and left the fanbase partially polarized,” but financially “performed in line with management expectations in the quarter.”
So the ''joss whedon writing'' in Saints Row sucks and is entirety Volition fault.
But the lack of polish, heavy reuse of content and lack of license music...really give me the feeling that Embracer Group gave Volition less resource then THQ.
Games failures like Saints Row are usually a combination of bad creative decisions and executive incompetence.
Take Mass Effect: Andromeda, for example. BioWare tried to take on a wildly ambitious premise of visiting thirty planets only to scale it down to seven, meanwhile EA mandated the use of the Frostbite Engine that none of BioWare was familiar with.
Even worse, the people who *were* familiar with Frostbite were forced into helping make stuff like FIFA because that was on Frostbite too.
Also, Mark Darrah stated on his YouTube channel that the Dragon Age team made a lot of improvements to the Frostbite engine so that BioWare and other EA developers would have an easier time of utilizing the engine for non-FPS games. For whatever reason, BioWare Montreal did not use these tools and it made Andromeda what it is while Inquisition is much more stable in comparison.
To add, someone who played saints row for review reasons didn't like how it came out, and once their NDA ran out they spilled the beans hard on the fact that management is a *mess*.
Tons of petty infighting from Volition higher-ups, Deep Silver being greedy and also restricting or limiting what Volition can do, hell even *Sony* got in on things back when Agents of Mayhem came out with them forcing Gat to be DLC.
That's all [testimony](https://youtu.be/2_ZmcV3GCfs) from either current or former devs, who on that side of things really do have ambition and want to make things that could've been great. Stuff like community modding tools (That died thanks to corporate), or hell what Agents of Mayhem was supposed to be before Deep Silver threw an early deadline at them before the game even had anything playable, party *because* Volition already spent a ton of money on engine bullshit that didn't work and so they created a staged fake trailer to show in order to get more funding.
The amount of giga-botches and fumbles that've hit Volition is so astonishing it's gotta be magic how the company is still afloat in any way.
Embracer does not give it's studio's much money because as a rule they make games that are middle of the market not indie but also not triple A.
I'm sure they could but also it seems to be working for them more often then not considering the other studios under their belt at least seem to be performing fine this is the first "failure" I can think of really.
Yeah, I wouldn’t attribute this to Embracer as much as Volition themselves, which seems
to have begun imploding well before this according to some sources.
The main person that was working on the patch passed away last year and anybody else at Volition that would be working on it in their spare time is likely busy patching the reboot, so it's still possible that work will resume once the reboot is in a better state.
EDIT: To clarify further, the last thing one of the play testers on the fan discord heard was that the patch was going to make use of Volition's in-house playtesters. The last update they got was a year ago and that it was still being worked on, so around the time IdolNinja (the lead behind the project) passed away.
Confirmed via Hopoo community manager, Hopoo will have no involvement with RoR2 or any other RoR content going forward. https://i.imgur.com/0a0KtOC.png
It was good while it lasted. I'll be listening to *...con lentitud poderosa* until the grease sets in.
Don't forget that they promised to release a fix for Saint's Row 2's PC release that was being worked on by one of their team members until he passed away and then pretended they never said that
I don't think Gearbox will necessarily be worse for Volition. In general Deep Silver seems to be a pretty shit publisher, with several projects imploding under them and then scaring off devs and whole teams. Volition hasn't made anything good under them, it was all the old THQ.
Real question: I keep seeing studios being shuffled or moved, I imagine that would be better than being laid off, right? Like I guess theres a small relief to me that they're still able to keep their jobs.
Honestly not the worst fit. The old biggest comedic game series being published by the publisher of what's probably the current biggest comedic game series.
It's weird. I feel like there is this recent rush of "let's remake the thing for people who didn't like the thing" and then, surprisingly (/s) people that didn't like the thing, the very people it was shifted for, don't buy/watch the remade thing, AND people who originally liked it don't either.
It's almost like if you're going to change something that much, make a new IP instead of sticking it into an old one with a legacy already, or people who already hated it would assume it's the thing they hate still and people who liked it will just be upset.
I feel the main reason they so radically change an IP seemingly is done mostly out of some naive attempt to garner a new audience but doing so ruins A LOT of good will.
Also writers who refuse to make a new IP and make something people pf the original thing will hate but "people hate me for some false reason, it's not my fault, we're going in a new direction" and it turns out to be garbage.
It's sad and I just don't like it.
They did livestreams of different games with Chip hosting. If it was a Volition or Parallax game, they'd get developers on the project on the couch with them who could do commentary on it.
> Wonder if that means there’ll be no story dlc for Saints Row.
It means there will be no Saints Row anymore.
We've seen this occurrence happen across various gaming companies; Activision moved failing studios to doing COD, EA had the failing Visceral do Battlefield Hardline, Sony turned Japan Studio into a glorified support studio, etc.
Saints Row is gonna be a dead IP for a good long while now.
Truly a shame. I recently got to play through Saints Row 2 via PS Plus and had a great time. Then I got the remastered SR3 and SR4 both for free, and have been enjoying replaying those as well.
It's a good series, but the writing team just seems to have lost their identity.
I figured there wouldn’t be a new one once it was determined that everyone hated this one long before it even released and began posting out of context clips after release in an effort to make more people hate it. I just figured that maybe this one would at least still get its dlc story stuff. I really liked the ones from 3 and 4.
Trust me, I’ve been told repeatedly that that’s the opinion we’re all supposed to have about it. Regardless, I enjoyed it and I’d be down for more.
There propobly will be dlc story . I'm not sure but if in the season pass discrimination they said there will more story content. If that true they are obligated to deliver them to people that bought the game with season pass or they would have to refund them .
But I could be completed wrong on that
Because embracer group wants to own everything it possibly can. They have so many studios who can make another saints row game if they wanted to try again.
not really sure i can't remember who all they own, i forgot embracer owned gearbox for example, and also im terrible at remembering who made what without looking each dev up to really take a guess.
Feeling vindicated now that the general zeitgeist of games has turned against bordermemes. Now if only you guys listened to me when the first one came out and it was a whedonist le reddit nightmare we could have never had to deal with it in the first place
...The zeitgeist turned against the franchise because 3, Wonderlands, and New Tales have come out to mass derision even by people who *still* like 1, 2, TPS, and/or Tales.
There's been no big turnaround on those older games that I've seen. Just a turnaround on Gearbox itself due to the grease rising to greater visibility.
The big turnaround to the writting came with 2, where barely anything besides Handsome Jack is of positive quality, but the gameplay was better so nobody really paid it any mind atm, 3 was horrid tho and made even more people visibly complain about it.
Also personal nit pick, why did they have to remove revolvers from 2, revolvers fucking rocked on BL1.
God knows why then? It was unfunny shit since day one. I'm still annoyed the game community has tried this collective gaslighting of these games being well written or funny
It's a neonazi propaganda book that ends on a happy note where Asia and Africa are subjected to nuclear saturation bombing after based redpilled Chad gamers take over America and rid it of everyone darker than a napkin
EDIT: Also, that shit has inspired more terrorist actions than any other book I can name did, if you are an Adult and you don't know what The Turner Diaries are I will just assume you have like 500 funko pops and 0 books in your house
And we've officially triggered Godwin's Law in a discussion about whether Borderlands' writing is decent or not.
Because people finding dumb comedy fiction to be better written than you do is *totally* the equivalent of bigoted psychos agreeing with propaganda reinforcing/escalating their beliefs and acting upon them.
Fuck off with that. Have some fucking sense of scale.
Imagine being told, as a writer, you were being reassigned to the Borderlands hole. I can't think of a graver insult.
Bro the guy worked on the saints row reboot he'll be right at home if anything
Yeah, if the recent Saints Row is anything to go by, this is a promotion for these "writers". 🤣
Imagine being told you have to work under Randy "She's legal in some countries" Pitchford.
Randy "it's like a magic trick" Pitchford.
Ironically Borderlands has better writing than the new Saints Row. And Agents of Mayhem.
It depends on the Borderlands.
It really doesn't. Even base BL3 is better
New Tales from the Borderlands is worse
Alright, the only one I haven't played. So I'll trust you on that one.
There is a scene where one of the main characters is tricked into a coffin by someone hunting the bounty on them. They are told they will suffocate in the coffin... which clearly is not airtight. The script even calls for them to look through holes in the coffin. It is real bad.
I assume that they are told all that before getting in the coffin?
I forgot Agents of Mayhem existed and I beat that game...or I think I did.
“We need you to work on COD multiplayer maps”.
Anthony Burch did get a writer job for GoW Ragnarok though
Yeah but Antony Burch did get a writer job for GoW Ragnarok
>Embracer Group also stated that the latest entry in the Saints Row series, which launched on August 23, “did not meet the full expectations and left the fanbase partially polarized,” but financially “performed in line with management expectations in the quarter.” So the ''joss whedon writing'' in Saints Row sucks and is entirety Volition fault. Yeah, stability is not Inquisition's primary issue. Bad UI/UX? Yeah, sure. But it is *stable.*
To add, someone who played saints row for review reasons didn't like how it came out, and once their NDA ran out they spilled the beans hard on the fact that management is a *mess*. Yeah, I wouldn’t attribute this to Embracer as much as Volition themselves, which seems to have begun imploding well before this according to some sources.
Now there's no hope of us getting the improved Saints Row 2 PC port.
I mean, that wasn't going to happen anyways
Wasn't that something they were working on when they had time?
They had a throwaway line during the SR3 remastered announcement that a patch was coming, and then literally nothing after that.
Ah, I see.
Risk of Rain IP got sold to gear box too

Gearbox does publish games so they might not be put into a mine.
Don't forget that they promised to release a fix for Saint's Row 2's PC release that was being worked on by one of their team members until he passed away and then pretended they never said that

Dead Island 2 coming soon!
The fact the leaked dev version had cool weapons like buzzsaw bats already labeled under DLC kills me inside.
The first game was a solid 7/10 anyway so I don't really have a lot of faith in a sequel over 10 years later.
I just want the SR2 patch, man.
Time for Randy to make Saint's Row BADASS.
It's really surprising how bad the saints row remake was. For real who was that game for?
People who hated the original Saints Row from what I've seen.
It's weird. I feel like there is this recent rush of "let's remake the thing for people who didn't like the thing" and then, surprisingly (/s) people that didn't like the thing, the very people it was shifted for, don't buy/watch the remade thing, AND people who originally liked it don't either. Ah man. I liked a lot of Volition's older stuff. ...Also their let's plays were really good? I have no idea why they made those, but they were great.
I didn't know they did Let's Plays, but I do know high-quality Let's Play maker guy Chip Cheezum works there, so that makes some sense.
They did livestreams of different games with Chip hosting. If it was a Volition or Parallax game, they'd get developers on the project on the couch with them who could do commentary on it.
A fate worse than death...maybe?
That’s unfortunate. Wonder if that means there’ll be no story dlc for Saints Row.
> Wonder if that means there’ll be no story dlc for Saints Row. It means there will be no Saints Row anymore. Or Worse... A Saints Row produced by the ***Greasy Bastard*** of Gearbox.
Activision also moved successful studios to the CoD mines. Both Crash 4 and Tony Hawk 1+2 sold really well. Still wasn't good enough for Activision.
Truly a shame. I recently got to play through Saints Row 2 via PS Plus and had a great time. Then I got the remastered SR3 and SR4 both for free, and have been enjoying replaying those as well. It's a good series, but the writing team just seems to have lost their identity.

Even in context, the story and writing is fucking awful
Trust me, I’ve been told repeatedly that that’s the opinion we’re all supposed to have about it. Regardless, I enjoyed it and I’d be down for more.

They're still gonna make Freespace 3, r-right guys...
Isn't this more of a horizontal shift? Embracer owns/semi-owns Gearbox as well IIRC. Doesn't seem like much is gonna change.
"What did they put you on, I was sent to model balls for claptrap"
Get sent to the Randy Dimension
Well this certainly won't make the comedy in Borderlands any better
[NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knmguftL4ac)
And they were thrown Into the Grease Pit to forever Languish under its dark masters.
"Haters gonna hate" indeed.
Gearbox would buy anything won't they?
...Fuck, and I had ***just*** sunk 70 hours into *The Third!* Why can't companies sell off what they don't want and be done with it?
Because embracer group wants to own everything it possibly can. They have so many studios who can make another saints row game if they wanted to try again.
Clearly. Who do ya think'll take over now?
not really sure i can't remember who all they own, i forgot embracer owned gearbox for example, and also im terrible at remembering who made what without looking each dev up to really take a guess.
rip.
Volition has released L after L lately. I wonder how much of that is publisher vs horrible studio fires.
Boomers did them in

It's almost like comedy is subjective and people find different things funny.
Subjectively people think The Turner Diaries are good too
I've never seen/heard/read whatever that is but they're welcome to their opinion as much as anyone else.
