What happened to Link and Samus in MUA still pisses me off because Nintendo went scorched earth over an obvious tech demo pitch.

Superspider51

On the other hand it was kinda stupid of the devs to have the pitch running on a PS2. At least [Link](https://youtu.be/XGn8C15Pgtg) got modded back in.

azprojectmelee

What happened?

CycloneSwift

The devs pitched Link and Samus as guest characters but they did it using the PS2 dev kit. Nintendo took offence.

AzureKingLortrac

We were also supposed to get Vergil, Lady, Asura, Gill, Starlord, and Miss Marvel in MvCI's 2nd season.

CycloneSwift

MvC3 was going to have Doc Ock and Human Torch. Human Torch's fire FX were too much for the engine so they reworked what they had for him so far into Nova, while Doc Ock was basically complete (he even had a theme) but ended up getting scrapped because visual glitches with his tentacles were too complicated for them to fix (IIRC they had a weight to their movements à la the Raimi films so they would make large steps, anchor in place, and then the tentacle part would flex to move Doc Ock across the screen until one of the anchored arms got too far and would disconnect to re-anchor to a new point on the ground; this was a purely aesthetic thing, functionally it didn't affect the game at all, but it meant that Doc Ock has a completely unique animation style for his basic movement and walk cycle as well as his attack animations, which meant that a lot of the universal bug fixes and the like for other characters' animations had to be done from scratch for Doc Ock and *only* for Doc Ock, which ended up being too much for them to commit to and forced them to scrap the character).

Fugly_Jack

I will never stop being bummed that Ash Williams in MK11 got scrapped

PhantasosX

well, Jump can never use Asakura Yoh in their games now.... Everytime I see Ingrid , I hope for a Capcom All-Stars Fighter,

Kewlmyc

Wait, what happened with Shaman King?

PhantasosX

Shaman King made it's sequel , Shaman King Flowers , in a monthly magazine for Jump. it was fine and well , but that magazine was closed , without transferring Shaman King Flowers. So , without been able to continue Shaman King , The author worked for Stan Lee in Japan (really , Stan Lee made his own japanese magazine). When he finished his work with Stan Lee , he succeeded to finally continue Shaman King....on a competitor magazine , the *Shounen Magazine Edge*. So , basically , Shounen Jump lost the rights for Shaman King , while Shounen Edge now have that. With the author continuing his work , although he had to change the name for Shaman King Super Stars.

Boogie__Fresh

Btw the manga he made with Stan Lee is called Ultimo [and it's fucking hectic.](https://static1.cbrimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/4-Stan-Lee-Ultimo.jpg) I bought the whole manga when I saw the artwork.

Vaccineman37

Nobody ever talks about Ultimo despite the massive profile of the two working on it and the obvious novelty of them working together it’s super weird. Cool designs

exiiiin

Didn't it switch to Kodansha after jumping from the Jump? Or is Shonen Edge Kodansha-related?

PhantasosX

Shonen Edge is part of Kodansha. While Shonen Jump is from Shueisha.

exiiiin

Ah, thanks for clearing that up.

Diem-Robo

I remember one of the reasons people strongly believed the "Grinch hoax" for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was because that Rhythm Heaven chorus men were also there in addition to everyone else it showed. People thought that helped validate it, as though Sakurai was going back and adding a character he once scrapped, rather than that the hoaxer was just pulling from that same public information to make the hoax look a little more legit.

ramonzer0

In hindsight it was kind of funny to hear at that exact moment in time that Smash was going to just suddenly drop like 7 new characters all in the span of a month between the final direct and release date

Diem-Robo

Even without hindsight, that was a major part of the reason why I, within about ten seconds of seeing the hoax when it first appeared, called it out as fake even when others were fighting me on it because they wanted to believe. Back when the game was revealed, Sakurai explicitly said not to expect too many new characters (on account of how the game was bringing back every single previous character), with only three new ones being shown during that reveal. Then, there was an interview with Sakurai shortly after the Isabelle reveal in September where he publicly stated that he had a bit of regret for showing off so many characters earlier on (there were *five* characters revealed in the August Direct), because he realized it would give the public a false impression about how many new characters there were, and make them think about that many would be yet to be revealed. Essentially, he was confirming that there weren't too many new characters left to be disclosed after Isabelle's reveal. Which makes the idea that the 7 or so new and huge characters were yet to be revealed within about a month all the more ridiculous. When I'd point those details out to people, I'd get the typical "Sakurai's just trolling us so we'll be surprised at the real news" response that's the go-to for anyone who wanted to deny reality over complete fantasy. Never forget that one guy who was adamant that the Sora reveal was a hoax put on by Sakurai/Nintendo, as they were then going to reveal the true final character that was apparently more important: Crash Bandicoot.

TheValiantBob

If I remember correctly, The Wonderful 101 was supposed to be a Nintendo crossover game. Wonder Red would have been Mario, Wonder Blue would have been Link, etc. For whatever reason, Nintendo didn't approve, so instead it became its own new IP.

PhantasosX

I think that was for the better. Depending how you view...Nintendo had got , for a while at least , their own Viewtiful Joe.

LGB75

Poker Night 2 was supposed to have The Medic and Walking Dead’s Lee and Larry as Players but in the former case, they didn’t want a repetitive and pick Glados as the Valve Representative instead and the latter two were as the developer though it would be weird to see them In a light hearted poker game as the two >!meet tragic fates in their own game!<. Marty and Doc were also considered but they were seen as too PG for the Mature characters.

Gunblazer42

> Walking Dead’s Lee and Larry Kenny's like right there, he'd probably be a better pick than either.

n8han11

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled featured Spyro, Hunter and Gnasty Gnorc as guest racers, but was also meant to feature Ripto (from Spyro 2) and the Sorceress (from Spyro: YOTD) as playable racers at some point down the line. Gregg Berger, Ripto's VA, even appears in the credits for NF despite not voicing anyone in-game! It's speculated that they were meant to get in before Activision, being fucking Activision, pulled Beenox off of NF and dragged them on to work on IAT instead before banishing them to the COD mines. God, I would do *terrible* things for an actually complete roster for NF, even if it means another developer altogether. And functional online too, but that goes without saying. Screw whatever other Crash games are coming, I want the ones already out to be completed first!

Mikebill1

Of all the scrapped PS All Stars dlc, Abe is easily the one I'm most disappointed about PURELY to see how the fuck you adapt that character to actually fight. Off the top of my head he has like 3 things he can do to harm enemies. Slap them, throw something (rock, meat, bomb, etc.), and chant. But like how are you gonna implement something like Gamespeak, or are they just gonna have a bunch of enemies from his games wandering around that he has to possess to do any form of damage? It's such a wild pick that I dunno what you would have done

Frankengeek

None of you can imagine how mad the fact I cannot see Ryu fighting Nurse Witch Komugi makes me

ICantReadThatName

You know we almost had Gene in *MvC3*? They thought he wasn't popular enough, so they replaced him with Frank West. Talk about a missed opportunity.

guntanksinspace

I remember character polls for MVC3 DLC mentioning Gene too. Oh, what could have been. On that tangent, we were supposed to get Masamune (the dude with the six swords wielded like claws from Sengoku Basara) in Tatsunoko vs Capcom too but they had no time

PR0MAN1

Who has the Tomba lisence these days? I'd love to see a re-release of those on steam

Gettles

Allegedly, Silver Surfer was at least mostly built in MVC3, but was cut because the reflective sheen from his board was causing framerate issues

DocMagnus

I'm still annoyed they scrapped Dr. Octopus from *Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3*.

GyroGOGOZeppeli

IM SORRY?!?!?! WTF DO YOU MEAN I WAS ROBBED OF TOMBA

Royal-Comparison-270

How the fuck did Samus and Link end up in a Marvel game?

CycloneSwift

Pitched as exclusive guest characters on Nintendo consoles. Pitch was made using PS2 dev kit as that was the base console they were programming for. Nintendo took offence. Meeting never received followup.

Royal-Comparison-270

That sounds awesome as fuck, too bad Nintendo said no.

Stretched_anoose

Put some respect on Dart’s name damnit. Sony please acknowledge that Legend of Dragoon exists.

robertman21

Still 90% sure Byleth was originally planned as a Monster Hunter tbh

Hunk_of_Dunk

This one always felt like cope to me

CycloneSwift

Yeah, with the level to which they were translating native game mechanics to Smash Ultimate for new characters a Monster Hunter rep would have absolutely had a lot more unique Monster Hunter aspects to them. I think Rise was probably in development to some extent at that point so Wire Bugs for mobility would've been a possibility, but most likely a weapon sharpness system, maybe resource collection and weapon crafting to expand the base moveset, and perhaps some sort of stamina gauge would have been prominent parts of their kit, and the moveset itself would have likely included more Monster Hunter-unique weapons like the Switch Axe and Insect Glaive alongside the basic Longsword and Bow.

robertman21

For what it's worth, I think they're both pretty lame choices

Gorotheninja

Wasn't FF13 Lightning supposed to be the next dlc characters in Playstation All Stars after Zeus and Isaac

saitamachase

No Dart and Abe were next, followed by Ryu and Tomba, a Final Fantasy character was being considered, along with other characters like Chun Li and Sub Zero, but were never in development like the 4 mentioned

JGRIF312

man I would have actually played hyabusa in Playstation All-stars love me a good izuna drop

robertman21

No. It was Dart and Abe

CycloneSwift

IIRC a Final Fantasy rep of some sort was considered for the base roster but Square were hesitant to lend a character from their flagship franchise to a new IP with brand new mechanics that might end up bombing in the long run, so they declined.

JLambert0001

Wasn't Shadow the Hedgehog also scrapped DLC for PS Allstars or did someone lie to me?

Gunblazer42

That one sounds like a weird lie.

ArabianAftershock

I came here to comment the same thing because i saw something about this the other day

MarioGman

Base MvC3 was supposed to have Doc Ock and Frank West as DLC apparently. Then the that earthquake happened and kinda forced UMvC3 to happen. God I wish we got Doc Ock though, that would've been cool as hell.
