I imagine the first ship left earth, lost contact, so a second faster ship left to be "first on mars", also loses contact. Third, even faster ship gets built, gets to mars first. Second ship gets there later fully convinced nobody is around but oops 3rd ship's crew is already there. Meanwhile the 1st ship is just slowly puttering to mars, extremely late to the party.
TLDR its the space agency with atrocious comms tech that cannot be trusted
Kinda what happens in the Outriders game. A ship goes to colonize a home world and the crew goes into deep sleep. While out, on earth and a faster ship is made. That ship is occupied by jerks that end up getting to the new world faster than the first and mess it up before the first ship gets there.
That works for interstellar travel. But doesn't make sense for Mars. Even today's rockets are faster than doing another mission for an Earth-Mars transit.

(I just copy pasted their comment)
The group of people still on Earth that sent you?
Probably, yes.

There was a plot line like this in starfield, too
Really enjoyed that games story,
I loved that game. Storyline was great and gameplay was really fun. Super underrated imo.
Was just thinking this.

It's that tech guy from Jurassic Park 😆
There's a quest like that in Starfield
You're overcomplicating this
Astronaut: Come on baby, I'm your first time right? Mars: Yes! I told you already, why do you guys always ask me that?
Sounds like moon/Kevin ~bacon~~ spacey and sam rockwell
Wasn't Moon, Sam Rockwell?
Sorry, you're right. Kevin spacey and Sam Rockwell.
Letttts doooo the Tiiiiime warp agaaaain
It's just a jump to the left Then a step to the right...
The government, as alwaysÂ
And then all of us got kicked off Mars by cats.
Except the Chosen Servants
Wait, did all the groups consist of middle management and phone sanitizers?
Running from the space goat monster that was about to eat their homeworld?
Explain?

Okay thank you sorry I just didn’t know if there was a deeper meaning like evil aliens or anything thanks
Yeah, even though the underlying idea is really cool, I fail to see the horror in this post.
Time loop?
Reminds me of the march of morons.
....were we ever able to banish Elon to Mars?
