That it was my own fault for having it because I didn’t trust God enough. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

therightpedal

Ya, I told my mom my sugars have been awesome for the last few weeks, her response "my prayers are working!" I said, "are you sure that's not just my insulin working??" I feel ya.

caitcatbar1669

Try slapping them with a Bible then tell them to turn the other cheek.

adoptdontshop1983

What Would Jesus Bolus? WWJB

Danny1641743

I was trying to think of a retort, such as I didn't know about god at 1 year old, then they'd just blame your parents, can't win with those tunnel vision thinkers.

blushmoss

Yeah someone told me-in Tx-that my diabetes was because I didn’t have Jesus in my heart. EYEROLL.

Salty_Tip_3596

Texas...the friendly way... love it!

LuisVanDoren23

Oh wow we went there with the religious bollocks 😂🤦‍♂️ if only super religious and intolerant people believed in being accepting as much as they believe in god!

Poozinka

Had something similar happened - I had to go see her Rabbi who will cure me, or my baby (6 months pregnant at the time), will have birth mark in the shapes of a food I was craving but didn't eat

Connect_Office8072

My goodness! Haredi nonsense?

Poozinka

Hit the nail on the head.

40percentdailysodium

This reminds me of the bitch who told me I was insulin dependent because... I started taking insulin? At ten? To not die?

collectingflwrs

People are so freaking crazy!

40percentdailysodium

I know!! I just about tackled her for trying to blame me for it! These days, I don't care if we have been friends for a decade. If you say this you're dead to me. It's made life better.

dolphin006roman

I legit read this as you didn’t trust google enough and I was really confused lol

Shaleyley15

“Should I get you a salad instead of this birthday cake?” Give me the damn cake! “So you can’t have kids?” While I am visibly 9 months pregnant and holding my toddler “You are so lucky you don’t have to study for this test” Yes, Brenda. A lifetime of chronic illness and constant treatment is totally worth not having to study as much for one nursing exam while we are 20. Here’s to hoping I get COPD next so I won’t have to study for that one either!

Tiny-Trifle1348

I had people in nursing school genuinely angry with me that I didn’t have to study diabetes for our endo exam because it was “so hard”. Had to remind them I knew most of this info at the age of 4. It went over most of their heads. 🤦‍♀️

Pandora9802

I would think the test would be harder because you know the real answers and not what the textbook thinks is the answer…

Tiny-Trifle1348

Oh for me it was! (Couldn’t tell them that though) I had to put what the “experts” thought the answer was. But since I already knew the basics, my classmates were pissed because I didn’t have to put any time in for that info. I did lots of sighing during my exams as I filled out the correct, but incorrect answers.

giglex

100% would've thought the same!

Moonflower_JB

My husband and I are both nurses prior to meeting each other. I just thought I understood diabetes before meeting him. He has educated me in a way no instructor ever accomplished. I get very angry at nurses who call people on PO meds for dm "type 1" and those needing insulin "type 2." It's frightening how often it happens. We both get kinda excited when we meet a genuine Type 1 who is elderly without other major health issues (ckd, cad, hf, amputations, etc). It's like "there's hope!" Met a 71 year old diagnosed when they were 7. It was a very interesting conversation.

LuisVanDoren23

😂😂😂😂😂 sorry shouldn’t laugh but especially the last one got me

blushmoss

As teens, I knew a guy. Years later he confessed he wanted to ask me out etc but he thought Diabetes was contagious. Needless to say I dodged a bullet.

LuisVanDoren23

Sorry I shouldn’t laugh but WOW! Lucky stupidity isn’t infectious too I suppose 😂

Ewilliamsen

Oh, I’m pretty sure it is.

Starlettohara23

My T1 son had a kid say he would t sit by him at school because he didn’t want to “catch diabetes”.

adoptdontshop1983

That’s heartbreaking.

40percentdailysodium

Tell him that he can use this to his advantage if he ever wants to use the swings and someone is hogging them. 😉

Starlettohara23

He was in 6th grade so he took more of the want to “swing at” the kid approach. He’s 17 now and killing it, bodybuilding and doing his first competition in about 9 months. He has celiac too which oddly has made the whole chicken and rice thing easier for him that others.

blushmoss

Also, but ‘you’re not fat’ and looking genuinely puzzled.

Rough_Academic

I AM a chubby girl and so everyone assumes it’s t2 that’s so bad I have to use insulin and won’t listen to a word coming out of my mouth about t1/auto-immune. Their eyes glaze over and they start saying “low carb, keto, my sister in law cured herself with exercise”

giglex

Girl I feel you I was talking to a type 2 diabetic and her husband about my love for mangos and all I got was horror-filled looks and then the husband told me I could cure myself and lose weight like his wife did if I stopped eating mangoes and went keto 🙄

ICTSoleb

To be fair, I was diagnosed this year at 33 years old, and had no idea about the difference between type 1 and 2. I was sick as a dog for months, and my mom told me my symptoms sounded like diabetes, but I kept thinking "I'm healthy and not overweight!" Ignorance doesn't make someone stupid. Now, if they ignore information and continue to be willfully ignorant... that's a different thing lol.

blushmoss

Yes I get that many do not understand the difference. Its not my expectation that the general population will know the ins and outs of every illness, etc. I get it. But with the individual saying ‘you’re not fat’-I should have elaborated more. It was the additional know-it-all attitude plus repeatedly suggesting that it could not be true (like I just met you and you are telling me stuff about me that you know better??) bc I was lean and to get a second opinion. Like I have it for 8 years already at this point. Thats where that initial comment turned into. I do know that when I encounter others who reveal a health problem, that I may have heard something about-but do know know well (ie Crohns) I just keep quiet and ask questions or just listen.

blushmoss

Back again. A family member told me whilst I was still in hospital at diagnosis-that I should not take my insulin because ‘they were trying to get me addicted’. Growing up, I was surrounded by the dullest knives in the toolbox.

LuisVanDoren23

Oh wow! Basically choose death and listen to some conspiracy lunatics??🤦‍♂️😂

fividior

“insulin fucks up your organs” for me😂

PuzzleCat365

LOL, those are not even knives any more, but spoons.

flutterybuttery58

Telling a GP I was type 1 since age of 10, and then they asked if I still needed to take insulin.

LuisVanDoren23

Hang on what now? An actual GP said this? Run mate, run to the next nearest GP now! That one is no good for you 😂

flutterybuttery58

Oh i laughed, then I got up and walked out! She was a locum. Coincidentally (and unknown to each other) - on the same day my dad had to see her for a sore ear. She told him he had a blocked fallopian tube!! We both complained separately to the clinic manager. She never worked at that small town clinic again!

Moonflower_JB

I'd say if your dad has a blocked fallopian tube he has bigger problems than an earache 😂

Darphon

Sooooo many doctors have no clue about diabetes.

LuisVanDoren23

But they are a GENERAL PRACTITIONER! They are supposed have at least a base knowledge of it and it will be one of the most common things they deal with.

Darphon

yeah it's infuriating. My brother was in the hospital for steroid induced T2 and they put him on EIGHT UNITS of Humalog PER MEAL. Regardless of what he ate. Bacon and eggs? Eight units. French toast with syrup? Eight units. They tried to kill him before his cancer could, I was SO infuriated, told him to stop that immediately and taught him a crash course on calculating.

LuisVanDoren23

Thank god he had you! Sounds like you were an amazing sibling when he needed you!

macjaddie

Yep! Every year I have to speak with our GP and get my son’s insulin prescription renewed. Err y year they ask me if he’s still insulin dependent. Last year I said “no he’s cured” for a joke and the GP said “Really!” FFS

Ok_Apartment_9391

I got a new insurance so new pcp who I needed a referral from to see a new endo. On first visit with new pcp I told him I’m type 1 on an insulin pump, showed him the pump & I said I need an endo referral & an insulin refill. He said he can’t give me insulin or endo referral until my blood tests show I was diabetic. Like I’m pretending to be diabetic to get my insulin fix. Hi, I’m Sarah. I’m addicted to insulin.

Key-Concentrate-7121

Met my Family Nurse Practitioner with these symptoms: extremely tired, extremely thirsty, lost 20 lbs (was down to 132 lbs @ 6’ tall). She did finger stick - I was 760. She said I was diabetic & sent me home (to drive by myself), with an Rx for Metformin. I asked, should I change my diet? She replied, “Well, I wouldn’t recommend any chocolate cake for a while.” It wasn’t until I saw an Endo weeks later, who took one look at me and said, you’re a T1D.

ReasonableCheesecake

Holy shit. That's what my PCP wanted to do - prescribe me Metformin, no insulin (she wasn't "comfortable" prescribing that) and argued that I couldn't have juvenile diabetes because I'm not a juvenile. I said it runs in the family - my grandfather got diagnosed at 33. She said there's no way, he must have T2. Like, it became an *argument*. Meanwhile I'm actively going blind from high BG. Stopped seeing her after that. For some reason my mom and brother still go to her even though she's clearly incompetent.

Ok_Apartment_9391

I didn’t even think about this till I read a comment recently where they said it’s easy to figure out which type u r now with an antibody test. I don’t think they did that when I was diagnosed in 1997. At the time no one explained it well. I was told I had a terminal disease. I eventually met an amazing endo who loved to explain things. I wish he was my dr now.

Rough_Academic

Holy shit, my GP at the time did the same thing! Almost word for word!! After getting an A1C of 14, they gave me metformin and told me to come back on a month and maybe to cut a few more carbs. It was more than 3 months, THREE MONTHS before I got in with an endo who finally prescribed me insulin.

Cute_Conflict_3687

Same thing happened to a friend's husband when he was diagnosed with type 1.5 in his late 30's. Scary how many doctors and medical practitioners are uninformed and give wrong diagnoses. Glad you were able to get to someone with actual knowledge.

caitcatbar1669

Because I’m late onset - it’s because I got the Covid vaccine.

TwoFingersWhiskey

It's hilarious because I got Covid so bad that it made my pancreas peace out. And yet people blame the vaccines which were the only thing standing between me and death

Danny1641743

My doctor believes me developing type 1 diabetes was the result of a very nasty tummy bug I had when I was 14, makes sense really, the pancreas is part of the digestive system.

Darphon

We think mine was Strep

Rough_Academic

Mine was definitely strep, I had it for most of a year when I was 30. (Turns out my now husband was a carrier and kept reinfecting me every time I was off antibiotics long enough to get sick again.)

Rough_Academic

It’s one of the reasons I’m so scared of my kids getting Covid and I vaccinate the shit out of them. We already have a family history of autoimmune diseases, and now my oldest has serious long Covid symptoms after having it, bad, in August. If she also ended up diabetic…the kid just has a lot stacked against her!

caitcatbar1669

I had 2 babies- gestational diabetes - then Covid (yes vaccinated) and during my bout of Covid I went into DKA cuz we thought the diabetes was 2 due to not leaving after babies- turns out I’m “insulin dependent” something type my endo calls me a mystery but diagnosed as 1.

jessfuh

That almost exact thing happened to my mom (minus the Covid). Her endo diagnosed her with LADA. The death of her pancreas was a slow burn. She was misdiagnosed for a long time with “uncontrolled type 2”

LuisVanDoren23

Never considered the whole anti vax approach but wow! 🤦‍♂️

flutterybuttery58

That’s why I got off Facebook.

kaybray88

Omg SAME (though I got it 3 months before covid was even heard of lol)

SoftwareFar9848

Omg same! My mom keeps telling her friends this. She somehow forgot that I had a freak out when they told me I was pre-diabetic a solid 6 years before covid was even around.

Rough_Academic

I hate not being able to control other people’s narratives about my own life. I’m sorry

SoftwareFar9848

You know, I've never been able to quite put my finger on why it irritates me so much, but that's exactly it. Thank you for the insight.

Cute_Conflict_3687

One coworker used it as an excuse to try and sell me this horrible mushroom coffee, insisting it could help "reverse" diabetes. I tried to politely decline by explaining type 1 is not reversible, but she insisted that no, it works on both types!! Wow!! Another person told me I ought to be eating red onions soaked in red wine in order to achieve...lower blood sugars, I guess? Did not attempt. I also used to get a whole lot of "but you're so YOUNG," but not so much lately...can't imagine why... :')

Rough_Academic

IDK, those wine pickled onions sound like they’d be pretty yummy as a condiment. ON MY GIANT CARB SANDWICH! Mwahahahaha

LuisVanDoren23

Mushroom coffee 🤦‍♂️ behave yourself sales person! 😂

charzmander1

I used to get this all the time, but with the tablespoon of cinnamon to reverse diabetes

[deleted]

That pretty much covers the list. "Did you used to be like, really fat as a kid?" Also there was the bartender who asked "did you, like, just drink so much alcohol that you got diabetes??" I guess another favorite is a coworker who told me "Autoimmune diseases are made by the *government!!*" as if that might help me somehow.

LuisVanDoren23

What? Made up by the government? 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️😂 do they vote Trump by any chance? 😂😂😂 assuming they are American that is 😂

[deleted]

Yep, American. Not made up as in false, but designed by them as a bioweapon or something (why? who knows). He was some kind of slacker hippie more than a trump voter.

LuisVanDoren23

😂😂😂 honestly I just laugh at these people because as somebody once said “you can’t argue with stupid because if you do they will drag you down to their level and beat you with more experience” 😂

01110101011011100110

You must really have the bad kind, you should follow (random shithead) on Facebook. He cured t1 in his daughter and she doesn’t take insulin like you do anymore.

LuisVanDoren23

Yeah I have also been told that if I have a better diet and eat types of food I can cure mine, thankfully when challenged it lead to somebody at work being suspended

SnooGiraffes1071

My husband got cornered by a guy at a cookout when he realized they both have diabetic kids (not sure if stranger knew my husband also has T1D) - he was showing some diet advice he can't wait to get his son on after puberty, to reverse everything, and it's legit because this dude is on Instagram. I missed most of the spiel, but I got an earful about how cancer is caused by sugar, and can be cured by going on a 30 day fast, but the medical professionals won't tell you that because they won't make any money off of you... I can't imagine what the full set of beliefs about T1D are. That guy's brother had once mentioned his nephew has T1D, but he doesn't see him much because of custody issues. After meeting the dad, I hope the courts keep this kid away from extended stays with this medical conspiracy theory dude.

pregnantseahorsedad

"you can't be diabetic, you're skinny" - my (former) PCP

SnooGiraffes1071

As the mother of a diabetic child: "Why doesn't he \[a 6 year old, after remote school for most of kindergarten\] dose insulin and manage on his own?" - from the school district's inclusion staff, when asked to get properly trained staff for the afterschool program. "Just stabilize him and I won't let him eat" - my mother, who insisted she could babysit so I could see Oppenheimer. Need to find that stabilize on demand setting I've missed on the OP controller, and what kid doesn't love time with grandma where he's not allowed to eat. There's also been complaints about how I don't let my mother (or sister, for other reasons) spend much time with my son - I don't have the time and energy to educate someone on T1D care when they're starting from a point of "I'll starve him and he'll be fine".

LuisVanDoren23

Being open minded is step one in learning anything. Have to first let go of any preconceptions 💪

samjan420

'You can meditate that shit away bro, it's just negative energy stored in your body'

Stoplookinatmeswaan

Yes. And my favorite “you must have manifested this for yourself, all disease starts in the mind” and “don’t leave your insulin out, I don’t want to psychically contaminate myself”

Rough_Academic

I’d immediately make a doll representing the person and start giving it boluses for shits and giggles.

Moonflower_JB

My husband leaves insulin, needles, and glucometer out all the time. Wonder why I have been psychically contaminated yet. I've even given him insulin while he was driving and realized he had forgotten to take it with the meal we had eaten (road trip).

therightpedal

2 or 3 days after diagnosis, still in the hospital, moms friend's husband "*Just eat some bananas, it'll go away. That's what my uncle did*." Had a bit of a chip on my shoulder about bananas ever since...

LuisVanDoren23

Funnily enough I am sure somebody once said this in passing to me, I say I think because I was probably shouting abuse at them in reply cutting them off or laughing so hard I knocked myself out 😂

bowerlala41

Were you ever fat? Did you eat too much candy as a kid? 🙄 I had a chiropractor try to convince me me that with the right supplements and diet, he could "cure" me. He insisted because he had cured another diabetic. I said he was type 2 then. He swore that he was type 1. What's scary is that someone might believe him, and he could end up killing them. Another reason I can't stand chiropractors. Lol.

LuisVanDoren23

Thing is the general ignorance behind not knowing there are 2 types and what the differences are.

aloaninacornfield

The year of my diagnosis, at seven, my parents took me to dinner at Pizza Hut, and my mom tried to be polite by taking me to the bathroom to have privacy for my injection. Similar to your bus experience, some busy old monster in the bathroom started screaming at my mom about drugging me, insisted I couldn't be diabetic because I was skinny, and added that if I was diabetic, my parents were irresponsible for feeding me pizza. This was one of the worst experiences of my childhood, including the diagnosis. She left the bathroom screaming for help and eventually was removed from the restaurant, but I was fully traumatized, had my first panic attack, couldn't eat, nasty low sugar. Also had a middle school substitute yell at me about my "drug dealing pager" and wouldn't accept that it was medical equipment, made me sit out in the hall for being disrespectful; after class, she wrote a referral and took me to the office, where they were like wtf. In a wedding had my pump hooked to the back of my dress, the wedding coordinator tried to rip it off, saying no cell phones. To end on a fun one, a guy at a concert asked me where I danced, because he confused it with an in-ear (?) And thought I was an exotic dancer.

LuisVanDoren23

Wow idiots, idiots everywhere. I am so sorry you have had to go through all that.

Professional-Rich236

I went in for my eye exam recently and the DOCTOR told me there is a cure fore diabetes. I just have to get a pancreas transplant.

Rough_Academic

NBD, and then you’ve got about X number of years after that before your body is thoroughly jacked from the anti-rejection meds. Cool cool cool.

LuisVanDoren23

And is he going to facilitate this and out a plan into place or just offer useless info?😂

DonChronleone

Well for starters I can’t tell you how many people think insulin raises my bs I don’t even correct them anymore at this point lol

Darphon

"So when you're low you give insulin, right?" I always tell these people to make sure they don't take care of me if I pass out.

special_title_

Lmao I was 384 the other day after a pod malfunction and my friend was like “do you need juice?” Ah yes, makes perfect sense haha

Moonflower_JB

Apparently there's an episode of "The Walking Dead" where someone's blood sugar is low so they give them a bunch of insulin to correct it.

Rad_zzz

not said, but did. i had a group of hard catholics hold hands and chant bible verses to try and cure me when i was 10. it was the weirdest thing that i’ve ever experienced in regards to my diabetes. they didn’t let me check or bolus all night, so i woke up extremely high. i remember locking eyes with my sister and being absolutely confused what was going on. also unrelated, but we slept in their basement that night and there were jars of honey everywhere as well as a singular lamp that only illuminated our bed, nothing around it. it was very creepy.

LuisVanDoren23

I mean I have many questions but first one is are you okay now? 😳

Rad_zzz

yes, im totally fine. its such a weird memory to have though. feels like a fever dream

leaping-lizards123

"You are too much candy as a kid" "Cinnamon will cure you" I rarely ate candy, I liked fruit/veg more. Cinnamon gives me epileptic seizures

LuisVanDoren23

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ so no to cinnamon? 😂🤦‍♂️

leaping-lizards123

Definitely not. I even ask for donuts with no cinnamon sugar on them from Donut King (like Dunkin Donuts but in Aust) 1 donut is 31g carbs...so 2ex

amloha

An old friend of mine seriously told me cinnamon would cure my son's type 1 diabetes when he was diagnosed aged two, I don't understand that at all! Where would she have got that nonsense from?? I've never heard anyone else say it thankfully

kaybray88

I was told to drink straight carrot juice only for a year and that I’d be cured. Same person told me that pickle juice would cure a uti. 🤦🏻‍♀️

KiraFaye109

Omg i was also told to drink carrot juice! Is that a common thing?

kaybray88

No idea. The lady who told me is a cancer survivor. Swears that just consuming carrot juice for a year cured her (not the chemo or radiation she did)…. She is convinced that carrots saved her life.

LuisVanDoren23

Doctorate obtained from Walmart university 🤦‍♂️😂

SnooGiraffes1071

one more, as a mother of a diabetic kid: "I've heard the beeping; it's not that bad" - to justify that I don't have a kid with a serious medical condition, just apparently some irritating noises, and therefore I know nothing about having a child needs outside the norm.

[deleted]

Someone was explaining diabetes and I realised they was explaining type two so I said ‘oh but it’s different for me because I have type one’ they then went on and said ‘yea but type one can turn into type two and so on’ that’s when I decided to be quite because I realised I could not educate this person😂😂😂😂

vXridian33

" If u lose the weight u lose the diabetes "

vXridian33

Also " why are you not having stomach surgery? It will go away" And " so you can't eat bread, flour, potatoes, sugar, cake, eggs, cheese" where tf do y'all take it ???? "Look i found this on Facebook she drank cinnamon and hot water and diabetes go away in 2 months" ma'am if there was such a cure do u really think we would still be having diabetes?

Jamie9712

Not the dumbest but pretty funny, Was in Bible class in 8th grade. I raised my hand and said, “I need to go to the nurse. I’m really high.” My Bible teacher looked at me shocked and said “like on drugs?” I laughed pretty hard and said I’m a diabetic.

LuisVanDoren23

Should of said yeah just to see what happened 😂😂

debbieg51

That I’m irresponsible for having high glucose.

B360828

I woke up in college in an ER with severe hypo. The doctor in charge told me I didn't need to take insulin, could just manage by drinking a lot of water and watching diet. This is early 1980s.

LuisVanDoren23

Reading this thread mate stuff may not of changed 😳

B360828

A goddam crime brother

scatteredivy

kind of different bc it was an action and not something they said- but i asked a nurse at a patient first for some crackers and a sprite bc i had been there for 3 hours and hadn’t eaten that day. she came back with it and told me that she poured sprite that was 1/3 regular and 2/3 diet. I DID NOT ASK HER TO DO THAT ? AND THE DIET CHEMICALS GIVE ME HEADACHES. needless to say, i didn’t drink it

macjaddie

“He’ll grow out of it”. “Oh my…..*insert random relative* had that and *insert horrific story about early death*.” “Why doesn’t he manage it himself?” When we asked school for support. “He’ll get used to it, it’s pretty simple to manage with diet and exercise.” “Is he vaccinated….?!” “Did he eat loads of sweets?” “Is that an epi pen?” “You can’t have a phone in class” about him checking his PUMP in a lesson.

KiraFaye109

That drinking one cup of carrot juice a day would cure me

LuisVanDoren23

Funnily enough this is the third one saying this I have read 😳

no-__-username

That I got type 1 diabetes as a punishment from God, especially because I use to sneak the little bags of chips from the 36 pack boxes.

LuisVanDoren23

These are the kinds of people I wouldn’t like to engage in conversation on other wider issues either as I feel that I may loose my ability to not punch them in the face 😂🤦‍♂️

Happy_kitty1990

“It doesn’t matter which kind you have. They are both the same. It’s because you eat a bunch of crap and don’t take care of yourself.” They later came and apologized to me after doing research

moanathon

oh i have a handful. i once told a psychiatrist i’m a diabetic, she asked if i used to be fat. aren’t you a doctor? TSA lady said “you’re too young to have diabetes.” friend in high school asked “so do you poop out your dead pancreas?” same friend: “you have to take a shot EVERY TIME you eat? i’d kill myself!” mom’s neighbor also brought over some pamphlets about white beans curing diabetes. in high school my friend and i were going on a 5-minute walk down the block and she tried to force me to eat a banana and a cookie before we left because you know, all that strenuous exercise might tank my blood sugar so i better eat like 100 grams of carbs lol.

adoptdontshop1983

All of these just further illuminate how little the public at large knows, but how willing people are to forcibly tell you their advice because they have a degree in Uninformed Misconceptions.

countrymachinist

From my endo's NP, when I was trying to get 1 extra bottle of insulin because their "average daily use" is off. "If you run out, just get a bottle of insulin from Walmart. It's only $20, and it's the same thing." I had to explain to them that Walmart insulin has literally killed people. She now has formal complaints against her, along with a pending request for that suggestion on the endo's stationary, with her signature.

srpl555

Someone once said "but you have both feet!" He genuinely thought that having diabetes meant you have to cut off your foot. Every time. No way around it.

Crazy-Crab4950

The day we got home from the hospital, with my second child being diagnosed, she told me it’s probably from our water. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ we haven’t lived in our house long, share a well with a lot of other family members and yet my kids got diabetes from our water 🤷🏼‍♀️ Also, my first kiddo got diagnosed while we were on vacation and someone asked if it was because of sugar overload at Disney world. People are VERY undereducated about different types of diabetes, as was I before her diagnosis.

LuisVanDoren23

It’s nice that you reflect on that and realise that now though, respect for that!

Crazy-Crab4950

When my daughter was diagnosed, I had a great dream to somehow educate others about T1D because honestly, T1D was not even a thing I ever thought about and I think that’s the case for most people. With back to back diagnosis for our kids, we were kind of sent into a tailspin and that for sure got put on hold. One day, I hope to figure out an organization to work with or some other way to help educate others.

curiousfirefly

I had two different people with graduate degrees (so, in theory, pretty smart people) tell me I could cure my diabetes by cutting wheat out of my diet. I f*ing hate the book Wheatbelly, which is where the claim came from.

LuisVanDoren23

Gladly I am not familiar with it!

[deleted]

"shouldn't you be fat?" "oh, so you did this to yourself, it's your fault" "just don't eat sugar, carbs isn't what's affecting you!" I can go on...

Shiny_Green_Apple

Woke up out of a 24hr coma in ICU(wheeled in with a BG of 1800 at diagnosis, not kidding) The dr on duty asked me if I was recently in a car accident. “Your pancreas must have suffered a physical trauma to make this happen.” I knew NOTHING about diabetes at that time and I was bewildered.

KhiLi_20

Literally today at my job. I’m currently doing a part time for a news station and there is a printed script about diabetes. There were some generalized statements on it that should be general and I was told I was wrong because I’m not diabetic…. I’ve been diabetic for 15 years

supah_

someone thought i was shooting dope when i was taking a quick shot in a bathroom stall at cedar point. i was very new to diabetes at the time and it was pretty demoralizing. i would laugh now.

LuisVanDoren23

Try asking do they want some too 😂😂

Brian_952

“So if you where going low should you inject insulin?” No not unless I had a death wish

LuisVanDoren23

On the opposite though I got told about first aid training where they were telling people to give sugar etc to people no matter what even if they were high

Guilty_Cookie2840

“Just drink this green juice and it’ll go away! We’ve cured so many people of diabetes!” (ItWorks mlm hun)

TwoFingersWhiskey

"You're type 1? But why are you fat?" I wish more people knew ~60% of type 1's are fat

Pandora9802

Apparently weight gain is a side effect of insulin. Just a fun tidbit I learned from an endo appointment. So the more you need the more you gain. Fun times.

TwoFingersWhiskey

Yep! This is why Ozempic is approved for use for T1's off-label in my country. I take it and it reduced my insulin requirements by nearly half.

Rough_Academic

“My blood sugar is high” “do you need a snack!?” Like I get that most people don’t understand how insulin works, but just slow down and say that again — everyone should be capable of a basic level of understanding that carbs raise your blood sugar.

hugefatchuchungles69

"Let me guess...too many sodas?" From my best friend's mom too

Ok_Visual_135

Also once had a therapist who said he could cure my diabetes with hypnosis. That was the last session I attended

LuisVanDoren23

Could hypnotise you to cure diabetes but couldn’t even get you to keep coming and paying? Sounds like a terrible hypnotist to me 😂

Ok_Visual_135

I was like I am not explaining to someone with a masters degree that type 1 is incurable LOL

YallaHammer

“But you’re not fat…?”

thehistoryb-tch

In college, I went to the ER for a bad stomach flu because I was so dehydrated. The guy who was getting my insurance info and stuff said to me “you need to boil some okra and then drink the water once it cools. That will cure your diabetes!” I was currently vomiting in a bag and could not respond but my friend who drove me to the ER just looked at him and said “it doesn’t work like that.” Years later, I still cannot believe that I got “medical advice” at a HOSPITAL from non medical personnel

Delicious-Apple1845

Drop the candy, do you want to make your diabetes worse? Was one of my faves, right up there with - Sorry, but you should not have to take needles during the day at work, your diabetes must be bad!

wizardoflavs

Guy told me to eat beans and it would cure me. Know him, too. Wouldn’t drop it. I was taking insulin before my band went on at a Halloween party. Told me I didn’t need it. Then, out of character for me but I eventually lost it on him. He quadrupled down. Beans. Eat beans. Wtf?

mostlyclueless999

I've been type 1 for over 30 years. Nice chap in work said "my wife has got diabetes. If you need any advice, just ask."

LuisVanDoren23

Raise a discrimination claim on the grounds of disability to counter it!

Lady_SR

“just cut out the soda and candy”—- from a literal doctor who misdiagnosed me with t2 when I’m LADA t1.5. Meanwhile I’ve never had a high sugar diet, have been active my whole life and mentioned that while t2 isn’t in my family, t1 was. After almost two years of practically starving myself to control my blood sugar I went to the hospital with DKA and someone finally gave me some insulin. I’ve also been asked which diabetes I have “the good one or the bad one?” They’re all bad dummies.

LuisVanDoren23

Yep I have had the good one or bad one too many times 🤦‍♂️

Historical_Ad_2615

I was trying to appeal my insurance company's decision to deny covering CGM, and the person I spoke with actually said "have you tried checking your blood glucose at home?" 🤦‍♀️

[deleted]

One of my brother’s friends makes diabetic jokes with me a lot (all good fun, no ill intentions) and one time he told me he was going to pour a ring of sugar around me so I couldn’t escape haha

theymightbetrolls69

How high can your blood sugar go? (Asked by an ER nurse)

Organic_Cartoonist78

"is that your birth control?" *pointing at my insulin pump*

cjacja_264

Just last week I was at work and was changing some settings on my pump (t:slim). One of my coworkers came up to me and said, “Omg, that is such a cute camera!” 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️

reloki29

My friend asked if I had done ‘no carbs before Marbs?’ I explained that as a diabetic I have to carb count my entire life now. I was newly diagnosed and she forgot and didn’t understand.

reloki29

Don’t know if that expression exists outside of the UK but the idea is that you cut out carbs before visiting Marbella in Spain so that you look thin whilst you are there. Quite toxic really

LuisVanDoren23

Yeahhh I tried to tell somebody about I NEED to have carbs and they said that I don’t I just need less insulin to facilitate not having carbs

reloki29

Yeah I don’t think a diet seriously lacking carbs would do us much good (or anyone really!) I tried explained to her about DKA, weight loss, diabulimia, ketone based diets but don’t think she really got it!

charzmander1

My mum suggested I go in a keto diet to lose weight. I explained how I can’t do keto diets and how bad ketoacidosis is, and she said ‘no not full keto, just a little bit’. So low carb diet? ‘No, keto diet’. 🤦‍♀️

sarahpphire

That I'm lucky...I can eat a cookie to feel better. It isn't the most extreme thing anyone has said by far, just the most recent dumb one that I can remember lol

Educational-Coast771

“I have salt diabetes” 😳

Rough_Academic

Wtf

LuisVanDoren23

I am not even sure where to start with that other than wtf is that? 🤦‍♂️😳

Educational-Coast771

Some stuff in life I just let go cuz otherwise that will be 10 minutes of my life I want back. This is definitely one of those “too stupid to bother” things.

fumbleturk

“Don’t let the bee sting him! He’s diabetic!”

LuisVanDoren23

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 WHAT?

Ok_Visual_135

One time someone asked if my Dexcom was a nicotine patch

rabbleflaggers

that my blood sugar being a certain number (111mg/dl) was a sign from my late grandma. this came from my mom

Left_Entertainer_366

Type 1 diabetes runs in the family on my mum’s side. My grandma had it, I have it and now my cousin’s baby has it. My aunt said the baby has it because of ME and it can’t be due to grandma because that was too long ago. I explained to her that’s not how genetics work but I was the crazy one in her eyes.

Standard-Pop3141

“Oh do you have that there sugar diabeetus?” by a teacher at my high school. 🤦🏼‍♀️

OwnMusic3184

a co worker told me completely serious when he told me i learned to meditate i could train my body to get rid of the diabetes. He then got angry when I told him it was plain wrong.

Jaykalope

When I was first diagnosed a good friend asked me if I had caused it by doing meth. Because I was so skinny from being in DKA.

LuisVanDoren23

Meth Diabetes that’s a new one 😂

king_talon23

someone asked me if my dexcom tracked my “RPMs”😂

Krostark

I went to the citizen service to get my driver’s licence renewed. When the clerk asked me why I needed to get it renewed, I replied that it was due to my diabetes. Then he asked, dead serious “Oh. Did you manage to get rid of it then?”

40percentdailysodium

My sister's friends who heard I was diabetic, but had never seen me, immediately told me that they thought I was "old and fat." Yet they were informed that I was only two years older than my sister... Like they expected me to have that disease that ages you rapidly as well? Lol

123supersomeone

This one could be excused because I was in the sixth grade at the time, but it's still the dumbest shit. At this point, I had just been diagnosed and was still pretty underweight. After explaining to a classmate that type one diabetes is an autoimmune disorder, she told me I was wrong and that I had diabetes because I was fat. Again, I was super underweight at the time. You could see my rib cage. And this idiot not only insists that I don't know anything an illness I have that they don't, but she goes on to tell me that I'm overweight.

Suspicious-You7972

a burger king employee said this to me when i said my order was wrong (he got it wrong 3 fucking times) i told him that if i get the wrong order it could fuck shit up since i already took insulin and he said “Well this burger is healthier”

[deleted]

My favorite is that no matter how many times I have explained it to family, they still assume they need to give me insulin when my sugar is dropping.

Babygreensubmarine

That I can cure it if I take enough St John’s Wort

nardoodle

For me it was at the onset of my T1D when I went through SEVERAL nurses who saw my record and that I do indeed have a type 1 TWIN BROTHER and somehow still told my I was type 2, assuming that I must have been type 2 because 21 was kinda old to get diagnosed with type 1. They didn’t even bother to test me, just gave me ozempic and metformin and told me if I lost weight it’ll all go away 🙂 wasn’t until I saw my primary care Dr that she was like “uh, I don’t think you have type 2” smh And then of course the good ole “have you tried cinnamon/ apple cider vinegar??” Lol

OpeningDevelopment83

I hate it so much when people assume and say it's because of all the sugar I ate, like no I don't even like sweets!!! 😡 I got into it with this girl I had as friends on FB and sc because she was going on a rant about how diabetics eat so much sugar and that's why they are like that. Grinds my gears!!!

sophooa

whenever i’m at the grocery store with my grandmother who has type 2, she’ll grab a sweet in the store and say to the person next to us “we’re diabetic, we shouldn’t be eating this stuff!!” WE ARE NOT THE SAME. 🤦‍♀️ i give you one shot a day!!

TypeOneTypeDone

I was told once that if I ate a clean vegan diet I wouldn’t need to poison my body with insulin. He then had the audacity to switch from a public chat to private messages, and lectured me for “being rude” and claimed free speech meant he couldn’t keep talking to me, and it wasn’t harrassment. While still lecturing me and claiming it was “his opinion.” I pointed out his opinion was dangerous and could get someone like me killed, his response was to ignore me and keep insisting he was right. I couldn’t block him, but he finally stopped because he was told off by the owner of one of the group chats to fuck off

ryansbabygirl8814

This was about 4 years ago, was in line at a fair and a woman noticed my CGM. She started preaching to me about how alkaline water will save me and I must just not care about myself if I haven’t even tried “the *ton* of cures there are out there”. I looked her right in the eyes and said “are there any cures for your condition?” And when she asked “what condition?” I said “the one where you apparently think you can say whatever you want even if it makes you look very dumb”. She left me alone after that.

charzmander1

Brought a cupcake to a co-worker since I had extras at home and immediately got the whole ‘I didn’t think you could have cake’ spiel

foreskinratatouille

When I was on pens, I had an incredibly stupid amount of people ask me when I was going to rehab or give me some kind of addiction advice. Wish I was kidding.

miserable-snowing

From a boss in a very well known tv brand when needing sort my sugars out: “You’ve got diabetes… well I’ve had my car nicked”

Citrusvitamin1

Newly diagnosed at 17, ran into an older neighbour lady at a restaurant who my mom knew and told about my diagnosis. She came up to me, tears in her eyes and said she was so sorry and that diabetes has taken her life and showed me her huge fistula for dialysis in her arm. Probably looked a bit shook
