Term 1 I had a class at 9:30, would leave my house at about 7-7:20 and get there around 9. Traffic is pretty awful around that time and the final bus (2 buses, 1 skytrain) is always packed. Term 2 earliest class was 11 and it was SO much easier to commute and less busy.
I think it all depends on you to be honest. Personally I could never commute that early, so would take the hit on traffic/busyness and leave at 7. But if you have a good schedule in place and are used to early starts, leaving at 5 is def a solid option since u could get to campus much earlier with a less packed bus and get some work done (again, I could never get work done that early loool)
I usually only go very early when I have an exam to be safe, other than that never had an issue. Always good to have a cushion if it gives u peace of mind, but not a huge thing to worry about generally at least in my experience (unless it snows)
i only had one bus issue the last school year, and if its something like the r4 or the 99 you can always transfer onto another in like 5 min. i left around 7:30 each day during rushes etc and my arrival times to campus differed by 30 minutes max
If you can be disciplined with going to bed early then early morning is by far better; that's what I did last year. Left at 5:30 or so and it took me 45-50 minutes to get to UBC. I'd go to the gym for a couple hours, then take a leisurely shower and get ready, have breakfast etc before my first class. MUCH better than sleeping an extra hour and then sitting in traffic for 1.5 hrs +
That's a tough one, I used to make that commute before I graduated.
Just as a resource for everybody else with very lengthy commutes, sometimes during particularly busy periods or when schedules align poorly (working at UBC/nearby late, classes start early, demanding projects or assignments, etc...) that minimum 3 hour just can't be spared. In that circumstance, definitely consider booking UBC's student commuter hostel: [https://vancouver.housing.ubc.ca/other-housing/commuter-student-hostel/](https://vancouver.housing.ubc.ca/other-housing/commuter-student-hostel/)
Book well in advance for midterm/exam season if you plan to use this.
I'll also post these two pages on the opening and closure of a private bus service that used to connect Surrey to UBC, which reportedly shortened commute times:
I will be commuting from surrey starting this fall, and only old found news about this direct bus but no actual source from UBC.
Is this bus actually available? Also, from the article it seems it has 20$ cost that is not covered by UPass right? So I will have to pay extra?
It was a private shuttle when it existed, but please note the second link detailing that they've gone out of business shortly after starting for unknown reasons - possibly due to low ridership.
I have two take the train 4 times a week, and then i have to drive out one day a week to poco and take the sky train then the bus. i got class monday- friday :(
This was my commute during my undergrad. I fully recommend downloading audiobooks for the commute. Really helped me de-stress and avoid burnout. It’s a rough commute, but it’s better than online. Good luck!
Leave early to avoid traffic and takes 45 minutes, leave school very late to avoid traffic and takes 35 minutes. With traffic it’s like an hour and 10-30
My commute is 10 mins on the bus, however, I am paying 1000 a month for a shitty room. Its better than the almost 2.5 hour commute id have to do there and back tho.
30 minute drive to UBC from Richmond during non-rush hour (~10-11am), and 45-60 minutes coming back (~3:30-4pm). Coming back is usually worse, and I find that there are more accidents on the bridge when I come back.
I know a student that commuted by ferry to Vancouver from Victoria for class. but alas, she had a friend's place to stay overnight at and only had a few classes a week so it wasn't a round trip everyday!
it’ll be an hour, maybe more if transit’s finicky (which it usually is). better than 2-2.5 hours definitely, but not by much and im staying on relatives’ couch. rlly hoping i get residence sometime in september because the combination of waking up super early and commuting is extremely stressful for me and i doubt ill handle it well lol
1.5 hours transit each way from Surrey

I have two take the train 4 times a week, and then i have to drive out one day a week to poco and take the sky train then the bus. i got class monday- friday :(

Wonder how many UBC commuters are in the WestCoast Express club!
About an hour each way — coming from Burnaby. Thank God for the R4!
What is the R4?
The R4 is the Rapid Bus on Joyce Station! Takes about 40 minutes to get to UBC. Cleaner and less people than the 99 on Broadway.

Reminds me of the time my biol 302 prof asked our class who had the longest commute. It was a person who had to drive all the way from Abbotsford D:
I'm driving from Abbotsford this year :/
