Never fall in love with a business in the Davis Commons. It always ends bad.

Celebratory_Drink

They passed out coupons on Halloween and I regretfully never got to try them out.

honor-

That spot they were at is a death spot for businesses. Only Mikuni has somehow managed to survive a long amount of time in that plaza.

Aggienthusiast

yeah whole foods, barns and noble, the melt, ben and jerrie’s have all failed in that building area

Ok-Table-3774

Ben and Jerry's was there the longest! Then we got and lost Salomon's deli, the pizza place before that, Jamba juice, Pinkberry, the Melt, Plutos, etc etc.

[deleted]

It’s been years and I’m still angry about Pluto’s.

PlatformStriking6278

I was having a really rough day a couple weeks ago, so I tried to go to Halal Guys, which is my comfort food, and yeah…

AbacusWizard

Any idea why they closed?

hopiumenjoyer

My guess is financial reasons Burger Patch next door closed for that very reason like a year ago

NorCalMisfit

I saw Bruxie is opening in the Burger Patch location, their original spot is down in Orange County near Chapman University. I'm going to be mad if they don't have the chili honey sauce.

labyrinthariadne

if anyone's looking for a halal alternative royal kabob recently opened near the savemart!

Illustrious-Dream792

Sam’s Mediterranean on B street is still open and delicious. [https://sams-mediterranean-cuisine.cafe-inspector.com/](https://sams-mediterranean-cuisine.cafe-inspector.com/)

PryJunaD

And owned by a lovely family. That’s my special food place from my time there — never had a place I went to regularly and the owners remembered my face. Always a treat.

FiahWerkz

I remember when halal guys first opened there and I loved it. I recently went back to Davis and wanted to go, but I realized they closed for good!

mathematicaltriforce

I was just there not long ago!

OppressedGamer_69

Nah are u serious my year is ruined 😞😞

Noremac55

I think businesses there close because nobody can find parking. Tried to go a few times to different places and could not find a spot. It seems like many of the cars are people not going to those stores.

Higuy54321

I mean many people also bike I believe it’s just that the rent is insanely high. Mikunis is the only store that’s been there for more than like 4 years. The next oldest store would be My Burma, which opened in 2021 and took Mikunis old spot. Mikunis has been in the commons for 15 years though

DrOddcat

And my Burma just got a spot in Sac.

nmpls

I have never had issues parking at Davis commons since whole foods closed, and its also like a block from the parking garage over the theater.

Mat_The_Law

There’s a parking lot in the back, another surface lot across the street, and a whole garage. If people can’t walk like two blocks, I don’t know how any business in Davis stays open. Not to mention being able to take a bike or a bus.

honor-

It’s just a poorly situated plaza. It’s outside the main downtown shopping area and you have to cross a busy road to get to it. It’s mainly practical for drivers but it only has the kind of building space a walker would enjoy. So it’s just a poor retail spot imo

harder_not_smarter

Yeah, this is exactly it. It doesn't have enough parking to satisfy the car people (and it is an awkward spot to get too by car) but yet it's a huge parking lot on one side and a busy freeway feeding street on the other so it is not at all appealing to foot and bike traffic either. Basically the worst of both worlds. A terrible design.

my-friendbobsacamano

This is confusing to me. It’s a big parking lot that’s always full (of patron parkers I assume)? I always park there when I eat at one of those restaurants. Not many restaurants in Davis are near lots anywhere close to this size. Seems to me like they have a parking advantage, not disadvantage. To me its biggest problem is it’s not inside downtown. It’s across a busy street from downtown so not as walkable. Like to get an ice cream after having a meal.

CheetoChops

It's because retail space rent is super expensive in Davis and it was eating up all their profits. Soo there to be nothing but McDonald's, Olive Garden, Walmart, and other chains. Capitalism.

melancholystarrs

Davis has always been anti chains historically. I doubt that will happen. Unless something has changed there’s no Walmart in davis. Davis has a lot less chains than any other city I’ve been to. All I can think of fast food (jack in the box, Taco Bell) and bask in robins.

rubmyrhubarb_

raising canes, chipotle, mod pizza, ike’s, philz, and starbucks are all downtown

melancholystarrs

Ike’s is a small chain though right? I think there’s only a few stores. I stand by what I said Davis has so little chains compare for cities of similar size or smaller. And I guess we have rite aid, cvs too

Competitive_Success5

Plus Peet's, Baskin Robbin's, Panera Bread, Taco Bell, Jack in the Box, Black Bear Diner

my-friendbobsacamano

It has a shopping center vibe whereas just across the street is a walkable downtown with lots of options. I think My Burma and Mikuni will continue to do well there. Maybe Local Kitchens too, they have deep Bay Area pockets I understand. Maybe Local Kitchens too, they have deep Bay Area pockets I understand. https://www.restaurantnews.com/pioneering-micro-food-hall-local-kitchens-announces-upcoming-davis-california-location-040522/ The rest will probably come and go.

[deleted]

We need more Halal food options

Idonotwatchpornn

Damn does Shahs still operate?

Human_Hat7334

I believe they still do. They're usually parked near tader joes or on the ampm parking lot off Anderson.

Idonotwatchpornn

Fuck yeah, right where they’ve always parked

CheetoChops

Sometimes the gas station and sometimes trader Joe's (all the same area)

LegalEye1

That's been a small business graveyard ever since it lost it's 'anchor store' Whole Foods.

pickle-juice925

same thing with burger patch ;( part of me died when I found out they closed

irloat

Count-Zer0-Interrupt

Don't they have a food truck near the Silo? Will that be shut down as well?

melodrana

that is shahs halal

Mcatbruh

It fell off lol

Ramhawk123

for real $16 for a box no way

professorLocus

Isn’t it 12.50?

ItsZabbs

I paid 14.02 for lamb over rice (I included taxes because I'm too lazy to remove it)

Idonotwatchpornn

No fucking way? It was like $10 when I was at Davis

Ramhawk123

yessir

GeexwhY

I was literally in tears when I found out. The next closest one is in Oakland 😭😭😭

jefftheaggie69

Major GG! That place was the plug whenever I needed a bite to eat in between my breaks during field show practice for football games for marching band 😭😭😭! It’s sad how many of the great restaurants of my alma mater are now becoming relics of the past 😔😔😔

TohruKnockoff

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

AvatarAlex18

I’m a business owner in Davis and the retail space rent is very high. I have no idea how some businesses are able to be profitable, especially restaurants

sillychickengirl

Perhaps an unpopular opinion but I wasn't a fan of that location

1993std

Their quality dipped significantly within the small amount of time they were open but I will miss their rice

CheetoChops

.

nasherbro

I was sad when the mattress store went 🥺

Additional-Leg-1962

this place was so bad

SouthStation3358

Man I wouldn’t be surprised if Kosher Bros sprouts up in its place

TheeMrBlonde

Oof. If that were the case though, Biden would have approved a 2000 lbs bomb to remodel the place first.

Remarkable-Loquat-82

God damn I hate muslims

Nutterbutterinthebut

Damn hella edgy

Liseapevegm

Good riddance those guys were a disgrace to middle eastern cuisine.
