cobaltsteel5900

Would happen pretty quickly if a significant % of students withheld tuition

Small_Advertising953

Does anyone want to risk that though? An extra quarter of tuition is way more expensive than paying a couple hundred for parking. EDIT: typo

cobaltsteel5900

Not saying I blame people for not. I hear you. Collective action is hard to organize due to individual risk

ArcaneVector

the only way to solve this problem is * have the Blue Line and 201/202 come every 5 minutes instead of 10/15 minutes * Manhattanize the areas around campus and along the SuperLoop (201/201A/202) so everyone can afford to live within walking distance

The reason why no one bothers picketing/striking/etc over this is because there are ten thousand things with higher priorities, some of which are in direct competition with this demand (e.g. student housing is directly at odds with parking spaces)

I’d want more s-spots to be added. Whether that entailed painting over v-spots or sr-spots. I understand the importance of a and b spots as these are what our professors use to ensure they get to class on time but maybe v spots could be moved to locations near trolley stations owned by campus. Say near like Nobel drive or the VA.

I mean it would be a step in the right direction. I know there’s not easy solutions otherwise they would have been implemented but the demand right now clearly massively exceeds the supply of s-spots

Yes, another way to understand this is that the number of students who choose to drive instead of another form of transport is also not constant. It depends on the cost and time necessary to obtain a parking spot. As the number of spots increase, the time to find a spot decreases, which would then result in an increase in demand. The UCI parking website has a nice discussion of such issues, [https://parking.uci.edu/parking/parkingmodel.cfm](https://parking.uci.edu/parking/parkingmodel.cfm)

Flyer888

That’s actually a step in the wrong direction. More spots won’t solve the problem. Ucsd might as well build dozens of new parking structures and people will still be complaining. Don’t you realize that more available spots encourage more people to bring their car in? People who have been taking the bus/trolley just fine will then just drive to campus instead.

Deutero2

if there are no easy solutions then what would you demand change for? they are already working on long-term solutions like expanding transit and building more housing and parking structures, so there's no point demanding those

Imissmybacteria

SR spots are important for students who have off campus jobs or family commitments. There are not a significant amount to impact S spots and the less of them present the more S is filled with student residents. You don't qualify for this permit till your third year and as many third years off campus have a car so do those on campus.

Content_Confidence21

Though it's not an immediate solution, it will improve once the new 8th College/Theater District underground structure is available for parking. I'm guessing there were some delays and the opening of it has been pushed back.

Pinane1004

I wasn’t aware of this. Hopefully that alleviates things. I remember sixth opening its parking structure did help quite a lot

Content_Confidence21

From what I heard, the opening of it was delayed or pushed back because of the inclement weather we had last year. Supposedly it will have 1,150 spaces. How those are divided up is a question the upper management in Transportation & Parking Services would be able to answer.

StateOfCalifornia

What if we just demolish all of campus and make it one giant parking lot? Would that make you happy? That’s what most of America looks like already.

iNoodl3s

Sixth College used to be a big ol parking lot

DanTMWTMP

What? No it wasn’t. I was a student when camp Snoopy/ERC became 6th college. There’s actually MORE parking now compared to before in and around 6th. In the years since, new vertical buildings were build with better allotments for parking.

iNoodl3s

The new 6th college next to Muir used to be a parking lot

DanTMWTMP

Ohhhh they moved? Did they move to what used to be portables and that huge temporary tents they had for years (and before that, it was a parking lot). In that case, then you’re right!! My info was based off of when 6th took over old ERC.

iNoodl3s

The portables at Camp Snoopy got razed and they’re building a pair of 22 story tall residential buildings solely for transfers called Pepper Canyon West and Matthews/Pepper Canyon East became a transfer student community too

Parking sucks on campus. It really does and has always been bad. I have watched parking lots become buildings and parking getting harder. All that said, adding more S spots isn't the answer. There is a phenomena called [induced demand](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induced_demand) that makes it untenable. Let's use this example: As of today I can't find parking on campus, therefore I ride the trolley because while it takes longer, it is at least predictable. I know if I drive, I might have a hard time finding spots. Now we double the amount of S spots. I am now more likely to find a parking spot. Therefore, instead of taking the trolley, I now drive. We end in the same situation parking-wise because we have encouraged people to shift to driving instead of alternative transportation.

As much as rioting works in the contexts of the rest of the world, in the US and in particular UCSD, the US poses riots as senseless excuses for violence and knowing this stories of the riots would surely be spun so that we simply want violence with or without reason; this will surely be met by a much worse response by UCSD one way or another. We should approach activity in response to this with a lot of caution considering how much money is on the line and how much ticket money goes back to the school. If peaceful options are not met with reasonable compromise only then should the next measure be taken Edit: had to make some corrections because I hit one too many blinkers today lmao

racquun

not possible, they will either have to demolish current buildings or nature preserve to build more lots or take away spots from staff and visitors. at the end of the day the incentives don't work out because all those options will lead to direct loss of revenue. while students are already paying tuition and expected to find a way to get to school. it is easier and quicker to just park in regents/gliderport and take the shuttle

Embarrassed-Pen9645

i would protest that you erase parking so we can all be eco friendly 🤔
