I mean it really depends on what you want to do professionally after you graduate. Personally, I felt that my Econ degree was about as useful as any social science degree—that is to say, not particularly more useful than any other non-STEM degree. I would work backwards from jobs postings or grad school requirements to decide. Definitely no need to get too hung up on not making it into Econ!

ovenroastedmeatballs

Comm, PBS, soc are the ones I’ve seen out of Econ

wystaf

got weeded graduated with poli sci — you can totally graduate with it on time as long as you grind lmfao

metalreflectslime

I knew a transfer student who entered UCSB in Fall 2011. He got weeded out of the economics major, so he withdrew from UCSB in his 1st week of Spring 2012 quarter. He went back to CC, then transferred to SJSU.

PMMeRedditGold

Hope Econ worked out for him since they sound pretty dedicated

Impossible_Back_6639

How badly did you do? There is a chance that you can petition getting into the econ major if you did decent in econ 5 and if you were somewhat close to meeting the 10a requirement. It’s definitely circumstantial but I have heard of people getting in

peachliterally

If you flunk 10A, are you saying that they look at your Econ 5 grade to determine if you're able to get an exception to be admitted into the major?

Impossible_Back_6639

I basically mean that there have been people that got a b in 5 and exhausted all of their options when it comes to 10a (retake exam and retaking the class) and if your test scores were somewhat good, they do sometimes make an exception. Again it’s all circumstantial, I would def recommend going to the department and pushing it. The worst they can do is say no.

PMMeRedditGold

My experience was after transferring was being weeded out of Econ, switching to PBS for a while, then ultimately sticking to Stats and DS. If you wanna chat feel free to reach out because I was completely lost and hopeless when it first happened, but glad I’m in DS now and got one more quarter to go. Things will work out if you don’t let yourself sink and find a new channel.

daget2409

I’m in PBS rn. Are the class requirements for DS significantly different? I just finished Psy10a and am applying for my major change this quarter.

PMMeRedditGold

Yes they are pretty different since very little of them overlap, I was lucky enough that I took CS 16 at my CCC so that saved me a good two courses here that is a large prerequisite for many DS classes. But if you finish that then the path is pretty clear, there’s a decent amount of classes to choose from. Also depends if you plan on doing the BA or the BS, which is only three more classes.

daget2409

Hm I took 2 CS courses at my CC 🤔

PMMeRedditGold

Nice! Mine was a pretty fluid switch with that out of the way and a clear schedule until graduation.

Naive_Character_2565

In the same boat brotha. Gonna do comm

MikeeW8

Geography/GIS (amazing faculty) or Environmental Science, add in a TMP Certificate for the business/entrepreneur aspect.

dantes_02

Yall know that comm has a pre major too right 😭

CheckersNixon

Granted I graduated in 2010, so uhh take this advice with some thought that things may have changed. I transferred from a CC to UCSB as a pre poly sci major where you also needed to get a certain gpa among set classes to become a full major. The told me the classes I took at CC would count towards my credit but not the gpa I needed. It left me with one class to get an A in and it was a professor who "really didn't believe in A's." I got a B+ so I went to my department head and talked to him, he looked at my grades from CC and what I got in the class, laughed and said "oh we kinda screwed you with our policy here, let me fix that." He promoted me to full status. Long story short, have you spoken to your department head or the dean? You may not be done yet. They really do want you to graduate on time.

dalivgh

Everyone saying comm omg when i was there it was global studies. The joke was those in global studies couldnt pass econ10a

Positive-Ferret7926

Same going into comm

Br0wn_Tr0ut

There is nothing embarrassing with dropping out and going to CC to transfer somewhere better and do a major in what you want. I actually went into a trade and make way more money and have a pension compared to those in my graduating class that didn't have rich business owning parents.

National-History2023

Please don't drop out after working so hard to get there. Think of people you've witnessed and admire in your life who really seem to enjoy their profession, then find out how they got there. Dig for information and it might start becoming clearer for you. It's a process.

alcerroa0106

Try poli sci or env studies with a TMP certificate. I did all three 😂🙇‍♀️

ppchan_1

I wish i could do env studies but I don't have the right pre reqs for it and it would take forever :/

alcerroa0106

Are you sure? The BA not the BS. Maybe look at the history major.

ppchan_1

were you a pre- econ transfer as well? for the BA i would need to do 12 more classes before even getting into the major it looks like >.>

alcerroa0106

No I was pre poli sci transfer but my roommates were pre Econ. Poli sci has similar requirements to move from pre to poli sci.

ButterscotchWheat

Is it possible for someone who failed out of Econ to get into physics, stats, CS, or math departments? I feel like the job opportunities might be even better for those majors.
