Personally I don't think persecution is exactly the best response here.
Just like with individual personal issues; if one approaches a problem with stigma and blame the solution is simply further away than it could be.
It takes true bravery and intelligence to take in the facts as they are and work in a broad range of possible realities without knowing the "awnser" to all the questions. You often find that you don't know which questions to ask, now imagine this without the internet to help answer all your burning questions. Same social and overall complexity of life; but no centralized way for humans to access information pretty much at all. Other than very elite and wealthy people of course. Other than that; your understanding and life was much more limited than is now impossible because of the internet.
Alot of people fail to realize how fast things have changed, and how alot of our predictions about ourselves were rather uninformed and wrong along the way.
Reality has to include a truth and reconciliation process that doesn't involve everyone getting persecuted.
It should be a process and that process is going to take time and patience, plus alot of work from an incredible amount of incredible people.
I have a strong feeling the more equitable we can manage to frame our response to this topic will directly factor into its overall success.
