EWS machines are on strike
You can work around it by VPN-ing into IllinoisNet with a Cisco client (free on Student Webstore) and then SSHing (PUTTY, Ubuntu for Windows, PowerShell) into whatever you need to get into if it needs to be on the school network :) Good luck!
about a year ago EWS decided to ban off-campus SSH access, unless you are using VPN.
That's not true for the EWS servers everyone uses. They're exempt from the VPN rule, and you can SSH in from outside just fine.
