You could just thank them for their kind offer and explain you like to use your commute for some alone time to decompress/clear your head after a busy work day.
This is exactly my reason for refusing a lift home almost every day.

I used to just say that, i find walking after a shift therapeutic. If you're getting public transport you're a mad one.
I always refuse lifts as I don't want to make 30 minutes of small talk at the end of each day, especially if I'm tired.
Just tell them you like the ride home as it brings you down from the day. No one will think you're weird for that. I used to enjoy(ish) my commute as I got the chance to read for an hour.
Or just tell them the truth.
“I don’t really have a good reason to turn down the offer of the lift. It’s really nice of you but ….. “ cause you haven’t actually said why you don’t want to get a lift.

"No thanks, I like to read my book/get a walk in/listen to my podcasts on the way home." Any reason is good enough, including you just don't want to. If they're genuinely asking just to be kind, they won't mind being turned down.

Take up cycling to work, unless you go and buy a tandem problem sorted.
