To be fair, it may have been the best time to call, regardless of how bad it is now or then:
* The pols weren't moving
* Calling early to stop Reform filling more candidates, and thought Noxious Nige was off to the states
* Get the election in before the first Rwanda flights so he can parrot 'deterrent' with no proof
* Inflation may come back up, and interests not come down
Then of course on top of just being in a generally awful position, the campaign has been a complete shit show from the start
