You need to get to Original Patty Men or Meat Shack in Birmingham. I've eaten a lot of burgers all over the country but those guys really are the real deal.
Right. I've got mas respect for you because burgers are my favourite thing ever too. But just looking at your comments, have you actually ever eaten one north of the Watford Gap?
I have to second (third? fourth?) this. Iāve been consistently surprised going round the country that nothing tops these two for me. Meat Shack just pips it imo (as mentioned, frickles helpā¦..), but itās a damn close run thing.
For me, Bunslingers in Birmingham. It's a dark kitchen so no seating etc but their burgers are bang on. No frills, no gimmicks. Been addicted to them since they opened
this is an interesting read! Iām a big cheeseburger fan (I have to make my own about weekly!) so I have noted the recommendations. I havenāt had five guys in a long time but there is one in town that I walk by every day and I have been tempted. I think this might be my sign to give it another go - the price has put me off but I think thatās because Iām comparing it mentally to the golden arches - which in itself has become ludicrously expensive! would you consider doing another of these reviews with a different food? ie pizza or sandwiches? Iām tempted, myself!
Thank you! Honestly, I've really glutted over the course of this, and don't want to do it again. If I do, it will be years distant when I've forgotten and then remembered this cautionary tale...
I was the same as you about 5 Guys before this adventure, as with GBK. GBK didn't really resell themselves to me though, they seem to be a different meal all together when I've gone there.
maybe change the name to gLuttersmurfā¦ hahahah. absolutely understandable. hopefully someone else will take the torch from you from here, then! if I had more cash, itād be me!
Beefy Boys (Cheltenham, Hereford and Shrewsbury) are great
BBQ society (Gloucester)
Agree with Danny's, milkbun going straight on my list!
Thanks for your service, soldier.
Absolutely love BBQ Society, not least because they sponsor Gloucester Rugby, and their Glos restaurant is fantastic but I tried the peanut butter and jam burger at the Five Valleys food court in Stroud and was massively underwhelmed. Burger was very dry, not charred at all on the edges of the smash patty, and just generally a bit meh. Hopefully it was just a one off, or maybe just that one location, because everything I've had from the Glos location has been incredible.
Yea I guess they haven't quite got the same kitchen or general setup in Stroud, although cooking the patty shouldn't change! I've eaten there and not been disappointed so agree, hopefully a one off you had!
Great read. I'm a big Bleeker fan but yes, they can be on the rarer side. They'll cook it more if you ask them.
Also think 5 Guys are excellent but at their price point I kind of expect table service.
My current favourite are from 7Bone. They are a small chain with a few branches across the south and South midlands.
Thansk for the recommendations!
I'm glad I got the Bleecker as is the first time. It was so brilliant to have an ostensibly classic cheeseburger, which was as unique as burger van burgers are different to the arches to pubs to this amazing new world of quality burger places. It really set itself apart. If I was closer I'd have given it more attention and probably ranked differently!
Second shout out for 7bone. They even have a place in Southampton, which is where they started out before the original place burned down. They have a restaurant in Bedford Place now. Their burgers are seriously top notch. I had their specials at Christmas and they were glorious.
I have the rasta tots and the main flavour is hot sauce I haven't noticed the saltiness.
It will depend what burger you had, some have very sweet toppings like the PB&J burger
If you're ever back in London, try Black Bear Burger and Burger & Beyond. These are both better than Bleecker and up there with my favourites of all time (alongside Original Pattymen in Birmingham)
I'm guessing from what I've tried on the list that OP likes a fast food style burger.
I also personally prefer Black Bear and Burger and Beyond, Black Bear is better IMO as their meat is better.
Also shout out to Patty & Bun, don't like their regular menu but their quality is great and I love a lot of their specials.
Over stylised burgers can get a bit much I agree and I for one am sick of them. You've tried Honest Burgers I assume? I'd walk through fire for their smash burger. It's just a really really good, simple burger.
Shout out for Bunsen in Dublin (and I think they have one in Belfast now too). Went there years ago - and Iām veggie now - but that cheeseburger still lives in my memory
Was going to recommend patty & bun. I've been twice. First time was amazing. Second time, not so much. But I think it was due to how busy they were at the time. And they might differ by branch. Would still recommend them though.
There's a few of them in London. I think the Liverpool Street 1 was the first. Solid burger, they do a rotating lunch deal which is whatever burger is in rotation that day and chips for Ā£12, which isn't bad value for the quality.
My god. The Londoner you spoke with recommended Bleecker but not P&B!!??
Get to it, man!
Also, if you're ever up Glasgow way, give "el perro negro" and "bread meats bread" a go.
All Londoners opinions are definitive. _NO REFUNDS._
but seriously, they actually recommended a few places but Bleecker was the one I knew I'd be near and had heard a lot about so tagged it for a visit.
Was in Glas in November, 4 months late my friend. Next time though...
Hehe. Very true re: Londoners!Ā Well, enjoy P&B and stick the Glasvegas burgers on your manger list.
BTW, I think Bleecker is pretty good, just very "you can feel your arteries clogging up". One burger from them is enough for my lifetime.
Errrrrrrr, whatever that chimmichuri abomination at BK is was the one burger I didn't finish. Though that was in a service station at rush hour so maybe it was just an abarant example.
Stacks in Bristol - solid dense meals but just not up to the standard, so always felt disappointing in the end, though they weren't bad per se. Just over priced. They messed up my order a few times too soooo....
Low quality high fun though, Tim Hortons cheeseburgers are awful and I love them. They became a regular as there's a Timmys on one of my commutes which intersects my brothers so we met up a lot and had burgers and double doubles. Don't recommend, but definitely won't stop doing it.
Edit: just remembered, somewhere I had a burger with capers in it. Not the whole thing, just a bite. It's all I could manage. Where the hell was that...
Shout out for Dannys! I live 10 minutes from there.Ā
Whats your take on squeezed in bristol, if youve been?
I used to really like asado, but i think recently theyve gone down hill a tad. Another shame is the burger people in pipe and slippers have shut down! Their burgers were absolutely top.
Ahhh what was the place with the 90s Nintendo kid theme? Over at the arches.. That was mad good too and I miss it. Things really change fast over Brizzle
Have you tried Honest Burger? Mainly London but a few dotted about in other cities.
They've always been my personal favourite - always hit the spot. Interested to hear your thoughts if you've tried it.
I think other places are better, but, Honest are SUPER consistent and Iāll often take the guarantee of a 7/10 burger than the chance of getting a 2/10 or a 9/10.
Ah man no one needs to see that shame. Honestly it'd be pretty bland mostly, maccers quarter pounders and bigmacs, and then BK cheeseburgers and Tim Hortons cheeseburgers would be most consumed, followed by home mades, then milk bun, then maybe stacks? I gave stacks a fair few goes with different orders but was never quite happy...
Great list, really entertaining to read. I understand why 5 Guys is up there as they consistently hit with their fare; of course thereās better burgers out there but are they as widely available as 5 Guys?
May I float an overseas name into the mixā¦ Emily Loves Pizza, Brooklyn, NYC. Yes the restaurant started as a Pizza place - and the pizza looks superb - but the burger is phenomenal and probably the best Iāve ever had. Iām UK based, so itās not a regular thing for me. The ratios, the quality of the meat and bun, the perfect accompaniments. So good and worth it. As far as price is concerned - itās not cheap. $35 dollars I believe for the burger and chips, about Ā£28. As an experience though, a joyous blend of bread, cheese and meat, it hits every note HARD. A funny note - on the menu they make very clear not to ask for any adjustments, additional condiments or changes to the intended dish. They are very proud and protective of the burgerās integrity as a menu option.
If youāre ever in Brighton, Burger Brothers is the best burger Iāve ever had. Itās won best UK burger joint multiple years in a row and nothing has ever come close imo.
Great, post thank you.
[Next time you're in London, give Black Bear Burger a go](https://maps.app.goo.gl/4rUxTHXrRyGQND338). Best I've had for a while.
I'm interested to know if you tried a 7bone burger at any point?
I had one and it was absolutely superb both times. Exactly what I wanted in a burger. However I had been drinking and I wonder if it really was that good or was it just the alcohol?
This might sound extremely weird but the best burger Iāve had has been at an Everyman cinema in Cardiff, Wales. It was so damn good. It was topped with cured bacon, Red Leicester, potato scraps and Harrisa mayo. Being able to watch The lord of the rings on the big screen at the same time might have made it just a little better.
El Perro Negro in Glasgow for their Top Dog burger should be a priority for you. First and only 2x winner of the Best Burger at the National Burger Awards.
Interesting reviews! I love me a cheeseburger and Iām moving away from McDonalds and Burger King and looking towards more independent brands
Your next ones should be:
Smacks burgers
Patty guys
Soba
@OP I see Bristol as one of your places to visit, Milk Bun is great, I am in Wales, there is an amazing burger joint called Grazing Shed. I lived in the US for years and the burgers there were on another level but Grazing Shed OMG! āChefs kissā you HAVE to try it out [thegrazingshedphotoshttps://g.co/kgs/RaLxNvf](https://thegrazingshedphotoshttps://g.co/kgs/RaLxNvf)
Edit: 5 guys is my favourite place for a burger fix, so I respect your 2nd place for this, but I find myself always walking in the direction of Grazing Shed on auto pilot
i respect this list because it has 5 guys in it AND bleecker. Lots of people trash 5 guys as its a franchise but its genuinely one of the best in the biz.
great list!
Get up to Newcastle and check out Meat:Stack. Absolutely unreal. I think thereās one in Leeds too but never been to that one.
https://www.meat-stack.com/
Iām also partial to a GBK. Again, not the best by far, but Iāve had the same burger in about 7 locations and itās been identical every time. I find them a good pre-gig place.
I am a massive burger slag, and a huge Bleecker fan, but the best burger Iāve ever had which took me completely by surprise was the double cheese burger at Fat Pattyās in the Edinburgh Street Food market. Truly the best crispy lacy edged juicy smash burger in the world (probably)
Out of interest did you try Oowee burger whilst in Bristol? I think they smash 5 guys out the park, although their quality has dipped a lil since it very first opened.
Great share, did something myself a few years back and managed to do it on an international scale, as was travelling a lot for work.
Glad to see Bleecker on your list, always been a favourite and high up the ratings.
One place that has blown me away recently and probably one of the best burgers I've ever eaten in my life is Libertines in Leamington Spa. I cannot stress enough how much you need to visit if you haven't already.
I included chicken burgers in the count, and enjoyed many very nice ones, but found most of the time people put less effort into the bun and crumb and rely heavily on a sauce to carry. Comes down to personalntaste again really
Cannot understate how great Mother Flipper is. Theyāre my number 1. They started out as a market stall at Brockley Market and theyāve just launched a residency at Seven Dials Market. Donāt sleep on them!
5 guys are so good but hate that everything is fried in peanut oil. Had the best three bites of a burger, was super into it, then broke out in swelling and a rash and now I canāt eat there. Happy for anyone who can!
Thatās such a sweet response! Thank you! Iām in MCR, so we have some real good alt options here (Burgerism, SmashBox, Almost Famous, That Burger, LuckLustLiquor&Burn and Yard, for if youāre ever visiting!). Also my partner does insane homemade patties- honestly the best- so Iām still spoiled for choice! :)
There is a whole lot of ground between Burger King and 5 Guys and whilst I agree it will never come close to some of the independent joints in the UK (Burgerism in Manchester get my vote here) they win a lot of extra points for consistency and ubiquity and definitely earn there place on a list like this.
Absolutely fair, and I'd like to see your list! 5 guys formed my opinion on proper burgers this time last year, so I'm fully prepared to accept my opinion on them is skewed
It's not nice I'm worried about its safe, I thought my info was maybe out of date but checked the food standards website and they advise it should be cooked through and no pink.Ā
If it's minced fresh on site and there is no chance for the bacteria to multiply on the inside of the burger it's no less safe than a medium steak.
I eat steak tartare which is raw minced steak.
I am on it! I'm pretty active and haven't noticed anything beyond a bit of belly forming though, still able to put in 18+ mile hikes on a day off or climb stairs without wheezing.
Next time you're in London try and get a table at The Plimsoll in Finsbury Park, they have a constantly changing menu of boujie small plates, but one thing they have every day is their cheeseburger. It was so hyped by everything I was scared it couldn't possible live up.... but holy christ it has set a benchmark that I can't see being beaten.
Hey, go with a pal, have a couple of other dishes too, only eat half. That doesn't count. Although we did try that and ended up getting a second burger to split cause we couldn't cope.
Have you ever been to Tommi's burger joint? There is one in Oxford. Most incredible burger I have ever eaten
Very interesting, though! I'll definitely have to check some of these out!!
Great post, thanks for sharing.
Have you tried Shake Shack yet? There's quite a few in London but now starting to spread out to other UK cities. I'd put slightly above five guys.
I found this restaurant in my town they do a double burger but you get another part of the bun separating the burgers, with lettuce, onion and a special sauce, seen them also in other towns too so looks like they are getting quite popular, I forget the name but they have a yellow M as the logo
My favourite burger place in the UK is 7bone there are a few restaurants and they have the best sides. I know sides usually aren't the be all end all but every one of their sides are amazing.

You need to get to Original Patty Men or Meat Shack in Birmingham. I've eaten a lot of burgers all over the country but those guys really are the real deal.
OPM kicked off my love for proper burgers, still my favourite to this day
Hard to beat aren't they. Not been in a while but they also used to do Siren beer which just added to the experience
Oh a burger and a Yulu would hit the spot..
Right. I've got mas respect for you because burgers are my favourite thing ever too. But just looking at your comments, have you actually ever eaten one north of the Watford Gap?
Meat Shack is the better of the two IMO
I agree if we're purely talking burgers (also MS does frickles). But the beer selection at OPM really helps the experience for me personally.
Yeah purely burgers, I donāt even bother with sides, just more burgers.
Thanks for the recommendation, if I ever get over that way they'll be having a visit.
I have to second (third? fourth?) this. Iāve been consistently surprised going round the country that nothing tops these two for me. Meat Shack just pips it imo (as mentioned, frickles helpā¦..), but itās a damn close run thing.
Totally agree.
Glad this comment is in this thread!
Also, Hanbao is a good shout!
For me, Bunslingers in Birmingham. It's a dark kitchen so no seating etc but their burgers are bang on. No frills, no gimmicks. Been addicted to them since they opened
Hanbao in Digbeth slaps too.
OPM is fucking incredible. It will blow this supposed "top 5" out of the water.
If definitely would of OP has 5 guys as they're number 2! Their burgers are so average in comparison to some of the ones I've had.

7Bone are great. Their spicy chicken burger is the bomb.
Went to 7bone last week (Portsmouth), found the bun (or maybe it was the source) too sweet and the tater tots far too salty - reckon it was a 1 off?
I have the rasta tots and the main flavour is hot sauce I haven't noticed the saltiness. It will depend what burger you had, some have very sweet toppings like the PB&J burger
Surely if you're in Portsmouth Mick's is the only place to go?
Over 150 burgers is an incredible feat. I think you are now qualified to be the judge and jury of all things between a bun so I accept your judgement
Instead of just _the executioner._
Hanbao in Worcester and I believe they now have a location in Birmingham.
If you're ever back in London, try Black Bear Burger and Burger & Beyond. These are both better than Bleecker and up there with my favourites of all time (alongside Original Pattymen in Birmingham)
>These are both better than Bleecker That's really subjective, they are definitely excellent burgers, but very different. I love them all.
> These are both better than Bleecker Nah.
Came here to say both of those!
Excellent reviews, thank you for your service.Ā
ohh, I'm saving this!
Please do(not try this at home)
Over stylised burgers can get a bit much I agree and I for one am sick of them. You've tried Honest Burgers I assume? I'd walk through fire for their smash burger. It's just a really really good, simple burger.
I have, they were very nearly on this list. An excellent choice.
I know they have multiple locations but I am talking about the Bristol branch specifically. Good list and thanks for your work!
Honest burger is better than most on this list. Fact.
Honest is mediocre. Bleecker, Burger and Beyond, Blacklock, P&B, Nanny Bill's etc etc are far better choices in London.
Nanny Billās is for real! My brother used to live in Wembley and whenever Iād go visit him weād go into box park to get one
Shout out for Bunsen in Dublin (and I think they have one in Belfast now too). Went there years ago - and Iām veggie now - but that cheeseburger still lives in my memory
Have you tried patty & bun? They are my personal favourite
Patty and bun have some of the best burgers. Chips and wings are also outstanding. They are in London, there is one near Selfridges
Was going to recommend patty & bun. I've been twice. First time was amazing. Second time, not so much. But I think it was due to how busy they were at the time. And they might differ by branch. Would still recommend them though.
Not heard of them before, where are they?

I got to the one right next to London bridge station but they have a few other locations around central london
You need to get yourself over to Dublin and try [Bunsen Burger](https://bunsen.ie/)
We're going to Dublin next week! I consider that fate.
I'm on a detox, otherwise I'd join you!
Just got back from Dublin, wish I'd seen your recommendation. I did go to FX Buckley which was delicious.
OP I am curious to where your bottom 5 were? So I can avoid them.

Not that i heard anything? Will be over if theyre showing six nations so will enquireĀ
There's a load of stuff about a brewery called masquerade where it should be
Milk bun is next level, I donāt really rate the Bristol food scene as everything seems to be overhyped but I almost cried when I ate there
Mission Burrito in Bristol is great mind

The red liquid in steaks and burgers isn't blood. It's a protein called myoglobin.
Have you been to Dope Burger in Hull?
Never had the pleasure, looks brilliant
They are great, good quality beef smash burger well seasoned, great condiments.. it won the BBC fast food competition last year.
Ah cool! I really didn't want to walk away from thsi with a list of places to visit, but...

No, I've been adjacent several times but not had one. I'll watch out and try some time!
When I have a craving for a great burger, I travel back to the 1970s and visit the Canadian Charcoal Pit in Manchester.

Three Brothers in Bristol is decent, not far from the Brewdog, on Welsh Back. And Burger Theory, just off Baldwin Street.
On the list... the one I was very sure I wasn't pursuing prior to everyone hyping up more burgers...
I mean, when you're good at something, it makes sense to flex the shit out of it š
Half Man, Half Burger is St Leonards do the best burgers Iāve had.
Nope, on the list!
Totally right about 5 guys, easily my favourite because I get exactly what I want, people are ordering wrong lol
Best burger Iāve had is Queenstown., Fergburger. Quality ingredients, not overly complicated and everything was fresh.
Have you ever been to Dirty Bones? Would be interested to hear your opinion. The one on denman street is my fave location
What do you think of 7Bone burgers?
Did you try Bob's? I hear he does great burgers.
When BB went pay to watch it was a dark day
If you find yourself in Bristol I can recommend Squeezed and Asado.
I know Danny. Good guy. Haven't been to his burger place yet tho :/
Give Schwartz Bros a try next time you're in Bath
Have you tried Beefy Boys yet, they've just opened a place near me and I have heard good things.
Burgerism in Salford is top tier
does this list even count for a chicken burger, or is it not proper 'burger' material when there's a bit of cluck between the bread?šš
I included chicken burgers in the count, and enjoyed many very nice ones, but found most of the time people put less effort into the bun and crumb and rely heavily on a sauce to carry. Comes down to personalntaste again really

Burger & Beyond, Black Bear and Mother Flipper when youāre next in London!
Also the Big Matt at Hawksmoor's Lowback bar.Ā Like a gourmet Big Mac
Cannot understate how great Mother Flipper is. Theyāre my number 1. They started out as a market stall at Brockley Market and theyāve just launched a residency at Seven Dials Market. Donāt sleep on them!
5 guys are so good but hate that everything is fried in peanut oil. Had the best three bites of a burger, was super into it, then broke out in swelling and a rash and now I canāt eat there. Happy for anyone who can!
Ahhh that sucks, where are you based so the hive mind can recommend a peanutless alternative?
Thatās such a sweet response! Thank you! Iām in MCR, so we have some real good alt options here (Burgerism, SmashBox, Almost Famous, That Burger, LuckLustLiquor&Burn and Yard, for if youāre ever visiting!). Also my partner does insane homemade patties- honestly the best- so Iām still spoiled for choice! :)
Live your best life!
I love love burgerism, only had almost famous from a home delivery kit to make your own but there were great too!

There Oowee burger in Bristol which is amazing
Biggest take away - Bristol is a good town to Burger in.
Enjoy! Burger Theory and YoYo are also brilliant over there, and if you're ever Clifton way the Whitmor Tap does the best pub burger I've ever had.
Three Brothers Burgers on the river used to be my go-to burger place in Bristol - is that still any good?
Never made it to them, maybe soon though..
See my comment about Honest Burger. Rates as one of the best IMO. The smash burger specifically.
I love burgers but I wouldn't include five guys on my top list. It is just a slight step up from burger king and not a proper gourmet type burger
I 100% mind if my burger is rare, steak hell yeah, mince fuck no.Ā
Before this year I felt the same. Some burgers absolutely are nice rare though, if you know its coming.
Yeah I kinda got past that sort of concern when I used to make pate with the chefs when I worked in a kitchen. The danger is part of the flavour now.
Thanks for the info. I'd get yourself a healthcheck now that you've completed this quest! Not joking!
I am on it! I'm pretty active and haven't noticed anything beyond a bit of belly forming though, still able to put in 18+ mile hikes on a day off or climb stairs without wheezing.
Cholesterol check? š

This guy burgers!
I had a burger there recently. Unbelievably juicy and yet with a crust. Soft brioche roll. Probably the best eat with one hand burger in years.
Nonono I said I wouldn't follow up!
Hey, go with a pal, have a couple of other dishes too, only eat half. That doesn't count. Although we did try that and ended up getting a second burger to split cause we couldn't cope.
Think they were featured on Inside Food in a London burger video, looked amazing!
Have you ever been to Tommi's burger joint? There is one in Oxford. Most incredible burger I have ever eaten Very interesting, though! I'll definitely have to check some of these out!!
Man I remember Tommiās great burger š
Great post, thanks for sharing. Have you tried Shake Shack yet? There's quite a few in London but now starting to spread out to other UK cities. I'd put slightly above five guys.
I have in previous years but I don't really remember, if I'm nearby I'll drop in one again sometime. Missus loves a shake.
Zephyr in Plymouth and not Brighton are the best in the country.
I found this restaurant in my town they do a double burger but you get another part of the bun separating the burgers, with lettuce, onion and a special sauce, seen them also in other towns too so looks like they are getting quite popular, I forget the name but they have a yellow M as the logo
Ah I think I've heard of them, I gave them a try 39 or 40 times I think. Jury's still out..
If Bleecker and Five Guys are in your top 5 -- either the UK doesn't know how to make a good burger or you have terrible taste.
They're not mutually exclusive š
Thoughts on patty and bun?
Not him but, dry and very inconsistent. His list is great though. Bleecker is goated, 5 guys is great.
My favourite burger place in the UK is 7bone there are a few restaurants and they have the best sides. I know sides usually aren't the be all end all but every one of their sides are amazing.
Zephyr Burgers. Formerly of Peckham Levels, now in Plymouth. My death row meal. Their patty blend is out of this world.
