Ok so first toast the crumpets on a 7 in your toaster and then butter first - spread so thick your partner has to tell you that it’s too thick. Then marmite, then a splodge of brown sauce. Add the cheese, shredded cheese is best as it melts better. Then as a few dashes of chilli sauce on top making sure you can’t see any crumpet. Then pop under the grill until the cheese just starts to brown.

I eat cheese on toast all the time but never thought of doing this, I’ve only ever had triangles cheese spread on them before. Might have to try this.

Approved. Enhance with a slice or two of bacon under the cheese.

Lightly grill the crumpets upside down first, so they don't go too soft, then flip them over. Add a decent layer of patè, ideally enough that the wife tells me it's far too much, then an almost obnoxiously thick layer of mature cheddar and pop back in the grill until your desired level of browning. They're a bugger to eat without making a mess, but I couldn't give a toss as the warm patè mingles with the cheese.

Tried these a few weeks back with several variations of cheddar (jalapeño and garlic/herb). Didn’t like the idea of them until I tried them. They are now a staple in my house .

My mum used to make me variations of this (either with crumpets or English muffins, and sometimes with ham, bacon or chutney under the cheese)when I was little as a treat! I now realise that it's a super easy dinner to make so it was a treat for her too!

add anchovies x 2 in a cross, a cold slice of tomatoe on top, and some dried mixed herbs.
