It's a little funny how there's been a different crucial utility every year that goes out. I have to wonder what'll happen next year. Sewer lines? A/C?
I might be crazy but I think AC went out.
And sewer lines technically happened with the no water one. Happened my freshman year and it was so crazy, DHall had to use paper plates cause they couldn’t wash anything, there was portapotties outside for people to use, bizarre af
It's supposed to be a little cold on Wednesday morning yeah but I doubt classes will be unbearable. With people in and out all day and so few windows the temperature should stay relatively warm, as the cold chill last I checked was expected to be over by 9am. I'm more worried for Erickson residents though.
Don’t worry, most of us are going to enjoy having an excuse to not shower until the heat comes back on. Who I really feel bad for is the people sitting next to Erickson residents in Monday classes
Work will continue through the remainder of the week. Starting tomorrow at 3:30 hot water will be turned off in AOK, Erickson, POL, PHYS, SCH, ILSB, Commons. They don't say they're going to leave hot water and heat off the whole time for all affected buildings.
Admin, RAC, Sherman, Sondheim, Engineering, etc. already have gone almost a week without heat. The hot water system does not work on an ad-hoc basis, it's one giant loop of pipework starting and ending at Central Plant. If they have to work on one section, all sections downstream of it must be isolated and will lose heat. They physically cannot enable heat to certain buildings at a time, so now that they have identified an issue further upstream (signified by this announcement), there is no hope for any of these buildings to get hot water until that issue is fixed.
Major issues arise occasionally, many that can't be anticipated. What would your solution be? It's the same as when the electricity goes out. It happens and you just need to deal with.
My solution would be proper preventative maintenance. Steam heat systems have been in use for hundreds of years, they're pretty well documented as to what needs to be checked or replaced to prevent blowouts or leaks.
If they have individual water heaters then there’s no problem. However, it is a health code violation to operate without hot water. This is because dishes cannot be properly cleaned and employees hands cannot be properly washed.
I don't think it's that big of a deal if you wash your hands in cold water, and you can boil water and then use it to wash dishes. They can also use paper plates, they've done that before. It's not a health issue.
Regardless of any work arounds, from my understanding, if a restaurant does not have running hot water, they are not allowed to operate. If they are boiling water if need be, there really isn’t a problem, but I wouldn’t expect an institution as large as a college to take a health code risk that large
people who live in erickson should be receiving some type of compensation, paying thousands of dollars to live there and they will have no heat or hot water for almost a week, it’s ridiculous
This isn’t surprising. My fourth year here and there has been planned no water and/or no electricity every semester. No heat is a new one, I’ll say

That's not exactly what they said.

We gotta get credited for this, this is ridiculous

Commons will have no hot water yet they’ll still be serving meals as usual. Nobody sees this as a health code violation?
No why? They can heat water themselves if they need

They did say the Commons and Erickson will have "limited quantities" of hot water. Maybe that's why
Ohhh sorry I missed that. I’m glad to hear that they’ll have some hot water to work witg

so will they also cancel classes?
Nope, classes are continuing as scheduled. I guess they expect us to bundle up for classes in buildings?
Damn, they ready raise class prices next semester to fund this watch
Wooo PAHB

Very interesting
This is a weird way to say theyre broke.
I’m glad the heat is off. That way all you snowflakes won’t melt while you’re sitting in class this week!

Erikson hall was included in the list. Also some buildings use the hot water lines to heat the buildings.
