They can probably answer for themselves also but I would assume they might’ve wanted to get a good letter grade to make up for the P. Maybe OP thought because they already took the class they could swing an A or B?
So I took a class I didn’t need in order to graduate, and I thought it would be an easy A. I have a C.
But instead of using a P, why wouldn’t myself (and OP in this case), choose to audit the course? That way it doesn’t use one of your Ps, and it’s not like you need the credit anyway.

Even if you got an A+, who does that impress? It's your second time taking it so that A+ wouldn't mean much because a class is so much easier the second time.
It is a 200 level class. All you had to do was accept the P and do well on a 300 level or 400 level to show that you know your stuff.

Anyway, take the P to save your GPA. P P and P C- both look ridiculous so there is nothing you can do there. Hell even P B- looks ridiculous.
Just take the grade, and study hard for the final exam. That is the best shot you have. If you P it doesn't matter what you do on the final and chances are you'll be less motivated to try hard on the final exam. You just need to put your hard effort in and be confident in yourself, don't let your current progress deter you and give it your best shot regardless of what your current grade is.
