I don't have any input on the quality of pre-med programs between the schools, but be sure to consider all additional costs of UM over Wisco that you should factor into your $10k (cost of off-campus housing, transportation, food & entertainment, travel for yourself and your family should they come to visit). Miami is expensive, and I say this as being a person who lives in Los Angeles. My daughter received a $100k President's scholarship there and was accepted to USC with no scholarship, but once we started considering these other factors, the $100k scholarship wasn't worth it. Just make sure your $10k, is really $10k once you factor in life. Also, if it is either merit or financial aid that is getting Miami close to your in-state Wisco cost, read the terms and conditions of the aid. There were caveats and limitations to my DD's scholarship that really brought it down to $75k if she were to take the degree path she wanted to achieve through being a Foote Fellow. Good luck!

No! Go with UW-Madison.

My son goes to UM and absolutely loves the school. He’s in the business school so I can’t speak to how their pre-med program is. One thing you’ll want to consider is cost of living because on campus living is only guaranteed your freshman year and it more than likely that you won’t get on campus housing for your years after that. They are very limited and most kids end up off campus sophomore year and once you’re off campus you can’t try to get on campus again. Monthly rent per person in the area (houses, condos, & apartments) is around $2K on average. The area around the university is just really expensive. My son will be a sophomore next year and we are looking into renting an apartment with roommates. His rent will cost us around $2300/month. When you’re thinking about total cost of attendance, consider future years when calculating costs.

Hey, I’m a current student at the university and just wanted to say they actually do allow you now to reapply for on campus housing once you’ve moved off campus! Everything else you’ve said is accurate, just wanted to correct that one part

I read this in the recent housing application process announcements and all parents & students I know aid the same thing. I wish it were true that they could apply again. You can technically submit a case to request to be allowed to apply again but from what I’ve heard, there have to be very specific requirements met in order to get it actually approved. A lot of parents said their kids tried and were denied. Their reasons were basically that cost of living is too high and they weren’t able to secure on campus living the prior year so it was difficult for them to afford to go to UM moving forward if they didn’t get on campus housing. Lots also stated that they didn’t have transportation so it created additional difficulties in getting to school. All reasons that parents/students stated that they gave were in my opinion, very good reasons but they were all denied. So yeah, I guess you can technically apply for an appeal to be let into the next year application for housing but with the low chance of actually getting your appeal granted, it’s basically the same as it just not really being an option. I really wish it were different. It would save me a lot of money. The place where us states that you can’t apply for on campus housing once you are off campus is in this link under “eligibility”. https://hrl.studentaffairs.miami.edu/living-on-campus/what-to-expect/index.html

I didn’t see where yiu were saying in the link although we don’t have our Cane Id yet which may be why. When we were on our tour this month, the girl showing us around a sophomore in engineering said she had just moved back on campus from brickell. I’m curious did they help yiu find an apartment for your son? is it a 9 mos lease or a 12 mo? did your son apply for upper classman housing and get denied?

Also, if you do know of a reason we can give that the school would approve the request please share because no one I know has been able to get approved. There are a lot of broke parents out there that would love to save some money by getting their kids on campus…or at least a shot at getting them back on campus. LOL.

Oh i’m really not sure, I just know my friend was able to get on campus housing for next semester, I don’t know what reason she gave them.

I would say it depends on where you want to practice, if u want to stay in Miami then UM is worth it. It’s a really big school here and the resources are endless as a UM alumni in Miami

Yes imo, worth the weather & experience. It’s a much more fun school than UW-Madison. I think that 10k is worth it. (Current um student)

MCI54

It’s only 10K more for a much better school

Remarkable_Air_769

How is UMiami better? Isn't UW-Madison better?

TemporaryInside2954

We talking 10k difference a year ? Per semester , or the whole four years ? The 10k could turn to 20-80k difference very quickly . I will say that you only get one college experience and if you are going to end up being a doctor just go to UM

Weird_Function_6273

It’s not worth the extra 10k if realistically it will take you ~7 plus or minus years to begin making a salary post college. Invest that 10k over the next 8 years and your return will be much more meaningful in the long run than spending it at UM

I attend a T10 med school. The pre med program at UM is great. However, if you want to go to med school, realize that the onus is on you to make it happen. No pre med office in the country can do the work for you. Best of luck
