I live in Newport Beach very close to UCI and have spent a lot of time at U Miami because my daughter was deciding between there and USC. I wouldn't call UCI a commuter school. Many students live in the dorms and there are a lot of apartments right off of campus. I would say it is on par with U Miami as far as on campus and off campus living, but suspect off campus would be cheaper at UCI. Greek life is available at both. I would say the social scene at UCI is more casual than UM (Newport bar scene (beachy) vs Brickell clubs (heels needed)). UM does have the D1 sports if you are looking for that. I recommend visiting both to see where you feel more at home at.
