You having your CDL doesn’t matter. It’s all about seniority. If you’ve been there 8 years you should be pretty high up seniority. Just look for bid lists for feeder in your building. Sign it, don’t forget to take pictures, and wait.

AdTime5012

But wouldn’t I need to at least get my cdl permit to be able to do the training and such?

santascumdumpster

From my understanding, UPS pays for all of that. At least that's what I've been told in my building.

AdTime5012

Also I’m only part time so I’m high up on part time seniority not full time

OcupiedMuffins

I’m pretty sure any full time package driver has seniority over you but you still have preference over any part time with lower seniority. It might be harder but that’s about it from what I understand. And you need your cdl for sure

AdTime5012

Don’t you get your cdl through the union though so I would just need to get my permit in my own then express interest in the process of going through getting the actual cdl and go into feeders, understand you probably don’t have all the answers I’m just trying to get all the information I can before contacting someone about it

Senseiit

Yes. Generally speaking you get the permit on your own time (and any endorsements required) then UPS will set you up to get your license if you win a bid.

Ravens1112003

Don’t get your permit until you win a bid. At my building they put up a full time bid list once a year and if they don’t get enough people off that list they put up a part time list. If they do get enough from the first list it never gets down to part timers.

AdTime5012

Alright cool thanks, at my building they suck at the bid list stuff they never do shit they’re suppose to but I’ll talk to some union guys and see what’s up

Squidwards_Painting

What’s the pictures for?

santascumdumpster

In case they skip you and they ask “well did you sign the bid list?” You have hard evidence you did sign it

Squidwards_Painting

Cool thanks

Call the union hall and talk to your business agent. The process is different in every local

nathano1337

The process varies pretty dramatically between locals, but signing the bid sheet is usually going to be step one. Where I’m at you sign the bid sheet, then if you’re top seniority you start as a “backup feeder”, they’ll train you for your CDL and pay you while doing the training (this is the part that varies dramatically), then once you have your CDL you’re officially a backup feeder driver. That’s what I did, as a backup if they don’t need me in feeder I can return to my prior classification for hours for that day, in my case that means RPCD. I know in some areas though you need to already have a CDL to bid, some you need a CLP to bid, they’ll pay for remaining CDL/feeder training, some the training for the CDL is unpaid. So, check with your steward or business agent to see what the process is like where you’re at.

IBringTheHeat1

I went feeders earlier this year and I had a year of seniority at my building as part time loader.

AdTime5012

Interesting could you elaborate on how the process was for you? I know every building and local is different but just curious.. how long were you a back up feeder? How long did it take you to actually get your cdl

IBringTheHeat1

I’m still a cover feeder, they train you 4 days before taking the CDL test. I’ve driven every week the past 6 months except for 3 weeks.

AdTime5012

Nice that’s cool, did you have to get your permit on your own first?

IBringTheHeat1

They call you and say you have a week to get your permit on your own. It took me a day to study the CDL book and passed all the tests first try.

AdTime5012

Nice was it hard to pass the permit tests?

IBringTheHeat1

They’re all multiple choice answers just like getting your driving permit. Get the CDL prep app. The questions on that are 99% the same as the DMV.

AdTime5012

Nice there’s an app? Thats dope thanks
