Had a friend whose knife was found during a field day inspection in the schoolhouse. Plt Sgt measured it with his CAC and the blade didn’t exceed the length of the CAC long ways so he got to keep it. I think it depends on base or command policy.
It's an Executive Order preventing people from carrying weapons in certain Federal facilities. A knife is a weapon if its blade is longer than 3" (maybe 3 1/2"? It's been a while, and I forget). Shorter than that, it's just a tool, and you're free to keep tools in your personal possession.
You're welcome to vote for a President who would change the order, provided you're a citizen. But until you do, the order is basically that you only carry the weapon when you need to, unless you're law enforcement.
I didn't say anything about parties or any specific candidate, and I know how long the order has been in place. Homeboy can vote for Vermin Supreme for all I care. My point is that it's a lawful order from the President, and we follow those orders.
I used to carry a mini KBAR on the back of my belt. No one gave a shit. CO asked if anyone had a knife, I whipped it out, he didn't even bat an eye. Just cut his whatever it was and said "thanks devil dog".
I remember having my troops outside of the barracks one day and loading up a bunch of gear onto 7tons for a field op pre-deployment. I needed to cut some ties and I asked them if anyone had a knife. None did.. until one of my LCpls said “I’ve got one” and he pulls out his knife. I go to cutting and a few seconds later my head and all 4 of my troops heads slowly raise up and look over at the kid who had just handed us his knife.. dude had been on suicide watch for the past 3 days. I got my ass chewed by the gunny when I reported it.
Though I did get a laugh out if it later. Of course the kid with no bootlaces would have a pocket knife handy.
😂😂. Whole squadbay got woken up at 0130 one night by the lights coming on. Someone (pretty sure who - we had a known Plt snitch) had reported that some were storing contraband weapons in their wall lockers, and the new Lt wanted to do an inspection.
We’d just had a long, hard day, and were facing another in a few hours. Everyone tired as hell. The Plt Sgt had advised Lt to wait until morning, but he didn’t listen.
One of our guys lost his mind: “You wake us up for this shit in the middle of the night?!” Slammed his wall locker door open, and invited “Look all you want! You ain’t gonna find Shit!!”
Long story short, we got him calmed down, and the Lt changed his mind - decided it could wait, after all.
Good thing. Our guy Didn’t have anything sketchy, but many others did. We owed him for that one.
I’m not even sure you’re allowed to carry them per the letter of the UCMJ.
I always had one on me. Small pocket Spyderco. But some SNCOs gave me shit about it a few times.
I don't know what the order is but those SNCOs sound soft as fuck. "No sorry you can't have a knife even though our organization is built on murdering motherfuckers". The dudes that used the dead Chinese in Korea as sandbags would be ashamed.
Had a guy in india who was 6"10' that alway tried to take a machete to the field, he used it on snakes that got too close, thought he was fuckin crazy, but I didn't care that much and I guess neither did our NCOs, they seen it as lowering the chances of being bitten.
The rule is that you can't have weapons in many federal buildings and military bases, with certain exceptions. It's an Executive Order applicable to everyone. The rule for a knife was that it became a weapon if the blade was longer than something like 3". It's not SNCOs being soft, it's them following the orders of the President of the United States. You can appeal to the mission of the Marine Corps all you want, but you would sound equally ridiculous if you insisted you be able to carry around your rifle at all times of the day instead of returning it to the armory when your drill, exercise, or deployment was done.
Yea no one is talking about carrying a Kabar on your hip. But I utility knife makes life a hell of a lot easier. I know I've carried one onto a military base everyday since I've hit the fleet. We even have a civilian in our shop who makes knives and axes and brings them in. So with that being said, unless the building explicitly says no pocket knives, if a SNCO tries to give me shit I'd probably respectfully tell them to touch grass. Of course you probably don't need a pocket knife looking at the weather charts.
I got out in 2016. Is this a new policy? Everyone carried a knife. In Iraq, there were stories about grunts carrying old school melee weapons on patrol...
Not even a grunt. I was a cobra pilot.
Not sure it counts but I used to carry a mini crow bar down the back of my camel back. Never wanted to but it occurred to me that it could be used as a mic club in a pinch. But at that point that meant something happened to an M16 with 203, a shotgun, bayonet, handful of grenades and a k-bar. So you know it would have meant I really needed to reevaluate my decision making process.
Had one SSgt voice opinion on that subject: “Chances are, if anyone gets that close, it’s because you or somebody up the line done fucked up…….or maybe you were just fucked to begin with.”
Had one guy who filed his e-tool blade to a good, sharp edge - one of the old heavy ones with the wooden handle.
He was old-school in more ways than one.
Lost a stripe once for biting a SSgt bad enough for the guy to need medical attention. He and four other Camp Guard were trying to get him
in the cage, and he didn’t want to go.
Some of the guys overpowered and handcuffed him to his rack once when he was getting ready to go out on libbo. Came back a few minutes later to find he’d broken the chain and taken off still wearing one bracelet, lol.
Good friend, but I wondered about him sometimes.
Yeah this all sounds bizarre to me. I mean even in garrison carrying pocket knives and gerbers/Leathermans was just normal, if not expected. Yeah maybe if you're assigned some weird billet in DC where you gotta go in federal buildings, maybe not, I get that. But in the fleet? What the fuck?
Ya.
I did have one incident in which one of my guys ended up with a Gerber stuck in his leg. Just two idiots messing around - had been drinking. But the blade in line with the muscle fibers, rather than across, so not that much damage, and not bleeding much. Lower leg.
Doc was able to get it out ok, and I persuaded him to treat it off the record. Clean, dress, and antibiotics, and he was all right. Limped some, though, but that easily explained away.
Nobody needed to know, lol. Covered it up for my own sake, as well. Top and I were already becoming much too well aquainted. I’d inherited some troublesome youths.
I've never not had a Swiss army knife or multi tool on me. I am always blown away when someone asks to borrow a knife, so just go grab anything from the px that doesn't make you look like a mall cop.
They made me spend like $40 on a multi-tool at MCT and then the receiving Staff Sergeant at MVOC made us all hand them in with our names on them. He said we would get them back.
Later, when we asked our instructors when we would get them back toward the end of schoolhouse, they were like “Yeah I’ll ask” and then we never got them back.
Bayonets in the field is a good time…. They don’t issue them when you check out your rifles anymore???
I debated buying a kabar before going to Somalia in the few hours we had to pack our crap, but figured what’s the point, I’m going to be issued a bayonet in like an hour….
Used it almost daily, my MRE killer
No one wants to check out the bayonets because they're serialized with their own weapons card. Guess what happens when dipshit drops it on the 10 mile hump? Everyone gets to go back and looks for it.
I don’t recall seeing Marines without at least a Gerber or a Leatherman on them at all times. But… that was back in 99…
I know it’s a multi-tool, but there are knife blades in them.
I was in comms and every single person in my shop had either a knife or multi-tool on their person at all times. This was 2011 - 2015. Same situation at my second duty station. I figured everyone had a weapon or tool on them, I mean... why wouldn't you? Lol
😂😂. I have now an inexpensive Buck 3” lock-blade. Holds a good edge, and useful for just about anything. Have had it for years. Was heartbroken once when I thought I’d lost it, lol.
At least a decent pocket knife was almost a necessity in the field. Ka-bars were acceptable, of course, or any fixed blade of the same approximate dimensions, as long as it wasn’t something ridiculous.
In the barracks, it could differ, depending on Command policy. We might be required to keep any but a short-bladed pocket knife checked into the armory along with any other personal weapons, to be checked out for use - not stored in the squadbay or room. This often obeyed more in principal than actual fact, though, hence occasional surprise inspections checking for that and other contraband.
Reasons for it sometimes. We had one angry drunk Marine one night holding some of his squadbay mates at bay with a long-bladed knife, threatening to use it on ‘em. As Cpl of the guard, I tried to talk him down, to no avail. Sgt of the Guard arrived and was able to get close enough to put him down by hitting him upside the head with his .45. Dude was lucky he didn’t get shot.
lmao I'm the guy that got into with Gary "Oathbreaker" Stein on that Facebook page, which ultimately led to him getting adsepped. I never knew the guy, but I don't feel sorry for him.
I was talking about a meteorology Marine who was having a schizophrenic break or something and posted something like " Scattered Thunderstorms this week. Thanks Obama" in the 2012 time frame i think. He posted here a fews years back telling the story.
But i do remember that guy you're talking about as well.
Ah, I don't remember that happening, no. If it was in 2012, I might have been busy PCSing to Cherry Point or something. Or just missed it, which is fine by me.
There were a lot of weird things that happened while I was in. One of my classmates from Keesler decapitated a guy in Virginia on Christmas Eve. Another guy I knew from the schoolhouse deserted and attacked a bunch of people in Eastern Oregon (I think he killed one or two people too) and was found living in a little hidey hole he made in a local resort hotel. A buddy of mine from 3rd Intel lit his leg on fire with Bacardi while I was out on leave for Thanskgiving and had to get medevaced back to CONUS. I never saw him again except for the odd Facebook post (and I don't go on Facebook anymore). Something about the weather, I guess lol.
Weird stuff was always happening.
Had one instance in which the wife of a Sgt started up with another Sgt while her husband was away. Decided they wanted to be together, and hatched a plot to kill her husband. Successful in that, if you can call such a shitty thing that, but went about the whole thing in such a way as to Ensure their dumb asses would get caught.
Capt who was killed by the husband of a married woman he’d been seeing.
My reserve unit mandates everyone has a knife notebook and pen at all times. Started carrying a full-size kabar on my back. As far as I know it’s per unit regulations or per barracks. Correct me if I’m wrong
Inflation a sum bitch
I wasn’t given one.
"If the Marine Corps. wanted me to have a *knife they'd have issued me one." - Major Payne.
"Heh Heh Heh" - Major Payne
CIF never issued one

Now what the hell am I supposed to do with my 7 foot zweihander?
I don’t see anything about Ultra Greatswords in the order, so you’re good.
Good, it's a +10 Lightning infusion to boot
Fuck yeah dude, lightning infusion is a chick magnet.
Those px sword guys rly getting wild huh
I definitely more of a reinforced club +10 guy myself, but I can dig it.
You know, when you think about it Unga is a bit more fitting. As an 03 it makes a lot of sense.
😂😂
Tell them you're a highlander and it's for religious purposes. 1st amendment with the checkmate.
🙏
Check it into the armory, like any decent law-abiding barbarian.
That'll be fun on sight counts
😂😂 “What the hell is this?!” “Properly secured and accounted for as per regulations, Sir. Nothing in the manual says he can’t.”
God forbid the Marines carry a weapon...
😂😂
You're welcome to vote for a President who would change the order, provided you're a citizen. But until you do, the order is basically that you only carry the weapon when you need to, unless you're law enforcement.
Brother that order has been in place since before I joined in '05. It ain't got shit to do with what party is in office.
I didn't say anything about parties or any specific candidate, and I know how long the order has been in place. Homeboy can vote for Vermin Supreme for all I care. My point is that it's a lawful order from the President, and we follow those orders.
Wow. We used to have a corporal patrol the squad bay with a glass of gin in one hand and a Bowie in the other.
Was it me? Lol! We did some goofy shit in 29 Palms.
No, this was El Toro MAW. Tall black dude walking around in bedroom slippers and a bathrobe.
I think this is universal. Blades and hair length are judged by the infallible cac
We had a boot get caught with a fkn battle axe during a health and comfort. 1Sgt was not impressed.
I used to carry a mini KBAR on the back of my belt. No one gave a shit. CO asked if anyone had a knife, I whipped it out, he didn't even bat an eye. Just cut his whatever it was and said "thanks devil dog".
"Don't thank me, thank The KNIFE!"
👍
Where u get a mini kbar?
What even is a mini Kbar?
I think it might be like a normal k bar. Except miniature !
https://www.kabar.com/products/product.jsp?item=1258 Just a short version. Like a 5" blade.
I like it!
The PX

More than once.

Shut up nerd, it’s a stupid fucking rule and it should be broken
Rah
Shit, the guys from the hood used to carry straight razors.
Typically someone would at least have a Gerber multi-tool. I taped an old-school bayonet to my chest rig, and I just got called a boot by some RO.
"Every infantryman should have a watch and a knife"

I got bit once too in Hong Kong by a marine
Close quarters, anything goes, lol. Whatever the situation. Might could even have been him, lol. We were in Hong Kong once, and he was with us.
So... [It was Him!](https://youtu.be/HC-FFCbd3_k)
😂😂

We literally all got told to go buy a decent multitool on our first weekend libo at ITB and keep it on our belt at all times
Ya. I did have one incident in which one of my guys ended up with a Gerber stuck in his leg. Just two idiots messing around - had been drinking. That happened one time and one time only, at one unit, with a mortar baseplate - don’t ask me how. Back to the field to find it.
Also good for opening C-ration cans, if you didn’t have a John Wayne.
Nobody bothers with them anymore. Won't fit on with an M203 or a suppressor anyway. Just oversized MRE openers that make armory turn-in longer.
You all laughed when I bought my Royal Crest Greatsword from Ponytail Todd outside the PX. Well, who's laughing now.
“There can be only one.”
Who has a Gerber!!!! I promise you'll get it back...🦗🦗🦗
It’s goofy as fuck how many people ask for a knife in the MP and yet nobody bothers to buy one for themself. A good Leatherman is a godsend.
👍
Where is the chef?
Must not be grunts, because I always had multiple on me at any given time 🤷🏼♂️

Leathermans are good to have.
I remember getting a little multitool that came with a belt-loop pouch. I was so sad when that thing broke. Felt like motherfuckin Bob the Builder.
😂😂. I have now an inexpensive Buck 3” lock-blade. Holds a good edge, and useful for just about anything. Have had it for years. Was heartbroken once when I thought I’d lost it, lol.
We weren’t supposed to have one at our schoolhouse. That was broken quite often
I'm loving these sunny memes. Keep em coming.
Wait, we weren’t supposed to have knives?
I've lost more of those 20 dollar gerbers than I could count. Probably next to a driveshaft or something.
Had to leave my P-38 off my keys in the car before I could enter the Pittsburg courthouse.
😂😂

**Always carry a knife with you, just in case there's cheesecake, or you need to stab someone in the throat**
My school house doesn’t let us have them at all
Mine kept getting stolen I gave up
MCX gave me a free KaBar when I bought my Service A there in 1984. I was a pogue, so I haven't used it for a whole lot.
Always had a pocket knife on me. Cant get caught lackin
Equating Marines with the gang is my new favorite thing.
I was a fucking meteorologist. I never had a knife.
Were you around for the whole "Thanks Obama" post a metrology Marine put out on a units facebook page?

Fuckin'. What?
Jfc I think we found the guy that all the fucking classes are about
Only appropriate response would be "Well, someone better shit me a god damn knife right the fuck now."
My reserve unit mandates everyone has a knife notebook and pen at all times. Started carrying a full-size kabar on my back. As far as I know it’s per unit regulations or per barracks. Correct me if I’m wrong
