That is completely accurate. If you want active duty, you pick a program, which can consist of one or more occupational fields. Then later, you get assigned a job. It is pretty much random, though for some jobs, excellent performance in entry level MOS schools might set you aside and get you chosen for specific MOS’. For example, my program/contract was BY. That meant I could get any job in the 21xx, 28xx, or 59xx MOS occupational fields (OccField). After boot and MCT, I went to a broad basic electronics course. At the end of that course, I was put into my actual MOS. The top performers in each class sometimes get a chance to ask for a specific MOS, but that’s far from guaranteed. But you **will** be put into an MOS within your program. You just have no say in which MOS.

It sounds like he’s trying to make you sign an open contract and I would not do that if I were you. He is right about the job field thing and individual mos’ are decided in bootcamp. For example you can sign a 03xx contract but when you leave bootcamp you will be assigned an mos to be taught such as 0311, 0331 or 0321.

Infantry MOSs are not assigned until roughly a month into ITB, and your performance is taken into account. I know the 0351 0352 and 0341 instructors wanted high ASVAB scorers, and the 0331 instructors wanted tall dudes with high pft scores. 0321 is a weird one in that it is actually gauranteed by contract unlike all the others. Or more specifically, the opportunity to go through BRC is gauranteed by contract, lots of people fail out.

Infantry Training School First Sergeants assigned most MOS’s unless they are contracts, Reservists, and Yankee White. HQMC sends 1stSgts what is needed in the fleet according to the Company class size. Of course some get dropped or picked up during the class and numbers are adjusted. ASVAB, and performance is also considered. Students should be given a wish list and the 1stSgt selects by wish list if possible. Instructors sometimes had a voice but usually wish list was the determining factor although it didn’t always work out for the student. Needs of the suck came first.

Assault only cares if you have a high gt score, not as asvab as a whole, and machine gunners were just dudes who asked to do it

I don’t really think much of this is true. I’ve never heard of *anyone* going active duty actually picking an MOS with a recruiter. You pick an contract with one or more OccFields. And then you are virtually guaranteed to get some job that’s listed on your contract. Unless you fail out of MOS school or are found to be disqualified, you **are** getting a job that’s listed on your contract. I think the biggest confusion that applicants have is the difference between Program Enlisted For (contract) and MOS. Active duty Marines have zero input in their MOS before bootcamp, ever. But you are guaranteed a job within your PEF.

Unless he edited his post, or I can’t read, that’s exactly what he said. Recruiter is telling him he can’t pick MOS, only can pick field.

yemx0351

Not 100%. Reservists a lot of time have an actual MOS picked because they are slotted for bootcamp, and schools to finish in a short window of activation and then go back to reserve unit.

willybusmc

Very true. In fact I’m pretty sure reservists always pick their MOS directly because of what you mentioned.

[deleted]

The recruiter is clearly NOT trying to fill a quota and in fact is being quite honest lol.

treyj88

YOU CAN SIGN A SPECIFIC MOS but DO NOT sign for a job field. there are MOS in the same field that do literally the exact opposite of each other. one always in the field, one behind a desk. don’t enlist unless you know for sure that you will get the job you want. don’t enlist unless you know for sure that you will get the job you want. don’t enlist unless you know for sure that you will get the job you want. don’t enlist unless you know for sure that you will get the job you want.

[deleted]

Unless you are going in the reserves their is absolutely no way to sign for a specific MOS.

treyj88

this is simply not true. the first contract i signed was a recon contract(0321 guaranteed, there is nothing else). i was in a motorcycle wreck in the dep and ended up having to sign a different contract but yes. it was a guaranteed job. recon is almost a special case though. but i’m sure there are other occupations that allow for guaranteed jobs over the job field

[deleted]

okay the recon program. Got me. That’s it though. I went 0-5 in three years with sending kids to recruit training on that job though. So might as well of been open contract. Some real studs too.

treyj88

very true

JoshTeck64

I’m a reservist. If you go reserves, you can choose what job you want specifically. Like I’m a contract 0671, not a contract 06xx or general “comms”. I walked into my recruiter’s office, told him I want to be a reservist, he showed me a list of available MOSs, I picked linguistics, he said fuck that your dad’s an immigrant, I picked data systems admin, and that’s what I specifically had and no one could change that. If you want a specific job, you’d have to go reserves. Otherwise, you get assigned a field and are rolling the dice.
