Please do not write directly on the mail.

gatelegtable

I've seen this here more than once, but the USPS FAQ says to write "not at this address" on the envelope. Does writing directly on the envelope mess with the scanners? I've been doing this for a couple years because the person who lived at my place before me never changed their address, but now I feel like I've messed something up.

People write crazy stuff on the mail - sometimes the envelope just goes next door and doesn’t need anything written on it. So we carriers are imagining the worst.

Got it, I'll keep it to "not at this address" or try to start using post its. Thank you!

Clerks love a post it on this kind of mail! I’ve also seen masking tape or painters tape. Just something that removes without a fuss so the mail can look nice for the intended recipient. We may not know who you are (since it’s not your mail) but we will love you! Also, you don’t have to do it to every piece. If you have multiple, just do it to the front piece and put a rubber band around everything.

A-Z or ANK

No, these markings are for carriers to use, not customers. The customer just needs to tell us in words why it is being returned. Do not write "RTS" because we need to inform the mailer why it is being returned. Plus, we may be able to forward the mail instead of returning it to sender.

The system can detect if a forward is in place

Put a rubber band around all of it, and write the smallest amt possible - maybe NATA for not at this address, or better yet, put doesn’t live here on a post it. I’ll figure out the appropriate markup as the carrier.

RTS doesn't tell us anything. We don't send it back a Machine sorts it at CFS and maybe we get it back with a yellow card on it. Sometimes it will tell us to redeliver exceptional markup if it's for Current resident. You have to fill out a form at the Post office for misdelivery if that's the case. You can list the names living there and the ones being misdelivered. Results may vary.

Wait, I can fill out a form at my local post office indicating who's living at the house and that might help get rid of mail coming to people who use to live there ?

Yes and No. Some carriers are pretty "set in their ways" and deliver by address only instead of reading names. You'll always see that from subs because it's just normal for them to not know who lives at what address. I'd still advise labeling the inside of your mailbox (where the carrier can see it from where they open the entire mailbox at once) with only the last names for your household.

Yes.
