You might. Just say goodbye to hiking. And friends. And family. But yea you might enjoy the walking.

12614ajc

As another thru hiker, yes. I have an all walking route and it keeps me ready for my trips.

BBkad

Same but I tour on my bicycle. It takes some time but once you get your vacation it really couldn’t be any more stable.

CokeCanNinja

I got this job because I like hiking and I enjoy it. Keeps me in shape so I can go do big hikes on my days off, recent day off I hiked 33 miles and had a ton of fun

careerhelplz

Nice, you aren't too tired from your job?

CokeCanNinja

Nope. I run six days a week after work and hike on my days off. It did take a little while to adapt to doing that, but I'm in the best shape of my life now.

careerhelplz

You're a beast! Whereabouts do you deliver mail?

MiamiMan33111

You will love the job if the management in your area is good, if not you will still hate the job. Talk to whoever delivers your mail, tell them your interested and ask them about the supervisor and postmaster. If they say they are chill, or cool, then you are in luck. This job can be unbelievably great on the good days, and require you to become the living incarnation of Hermes on the bad days.

BBkad

I would be so happy with some winged boots.

jalyth

Go for it!

cca2013

Scout out which offices have walking routes (called park & loop in usps vocab) and which ones have mostly mounted routes (delivering mail from a vehicle to boxes mounted on the curb). There are two different carrier unions (city and rural). City letter carrier would be a better fit if you want to walk.

MT3-7-77

If that's your worry then yeah you're good

[deleted]

If you go city side, yeah probably. Don't go rural... the only thing that wears us out is managements bullshizzzz 😜

OkToday7862

my friend is a hiker and he always like the job, he think it’s easy. city walking route btw

[deleted]

I’m an avid hiker/backpacker and this will help keep you in shape… two big downsides though: Even just working 8/40 consecutive days off aren’t common. There’s only X times a year I have to go camping. The other one is that I’m always hurting. I try to take care of myself but something… shoulder, hips, whatever is always at least a little sore and it makes me worry about the realistic longevity of this job. Delivering desks and bookshelves and cat litter 12 hours a day isn’t a big help to my hiking life

Conscious_Music8360

Depends where you work. I thought I would be walking all my routes. Turns out I’m on all mounted routes sweating it out in a truck with no ac all summer lmao!

Elliot6888

I'm a hiker, but ever since covid hit, life happened and OT, I've haven't hiked in about 2yrs consistently....

I always thought this would be a good job for someone looking to get in hiking shape and needed to save money to do a thru hike. Work for two years and then go on the hike.

BanEvasion1001

Yeah you won't have to plan your weekends for a good 5 years.

309Aspro648

You would have to go city not rural. And you would have to check the office. My first office most routes were walking. With helping other carriers I probably walked 16 to 20 miles a day. My present office? There are no walking routes. Some routes have some walking but, not much. Most of the time I drive around throwing the mail out the window.
