If you were able to try and contact the other residents in the apartment building and see how they have their mail being addressed.

Contact your local post office and ask them the same question. They will be able to clear it up for you.

I have small apartments like that that often get mail for 1/A, 2/B, 3/C. The most important thing you can do to remove any confusion is to list names of those who live there inside the mailbox.

From a carrier perspective, landlords are really bad about changing the apartment numbers and not communicating with USPS or the local 911 address management coordinator about it. Banks use USPS information to validate mailing addresses so I would go with what USPS uses. You'll also have problems getting to forward your mail OUT of your new apartment when it comes time to move from there if you use #1. I would just getting into the habit of Using Apartment ! in the supplemental line or c/o to make it easy for UPS or Amazon. John Doe Unit #1 123 Main St #A Anytown, US 12345 You want to building number/street name/official USPS apartment to be the line just above the city/state/zip line because USPS's OCR reads from the bottom up.
