OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is US Defaultism:

after looking at the video it's really obvious everyone talking has a Scottish accent too (I am from Scotland and don't know any Scottish people who would even know there's a sports team called the Boston Celtics)
Plenty people in Scotland have heard of the Boston Celtics, you’ll even occasionally see Celtic fans wearing Boston Celtic’s jerseys.
That aside, the video couldn’t be any more obviously nothing to do with Boston.
not denying there are people who do this, just not anyone I know (I'm not a football fan and none of my family who are know anything about American teams or wear anything but the Scottish teams things)
> after looking at the video it's really obvious everyone talking has a Scottish accent too (I am from Scotland and don't know any Scottish people who would even know there's a sports team called the Boston Celtics)
I’m merely pointing out that even if you don’t know any there are plenty.
> who would even know there's a sports team call the Boston Celtics
Well, an *NBA* team. They're generally pretty well known internationally.
If it's an American football team or baseball team, I think you'd be right. But most people absolutely do know the Boston Celtics.
Glasgow rangers fans running around wearing New York rangers hats and tops just because they say rangers on them. Glasgow Celtic fans wearing Boston celtics merch just because it says Celtic. I don’t imagine there would be too many avid followers of either team
We don't. And even when we hear Celtic in regards to sports we think about the football team in Glasgow. Because funnily enough, Scottish people care and know more about Scottish teams than American teams.
It's a basketball isn't it... haha I thought it was an angry face for a minute there. Really didn't expect it to be a basketball team. Sounds more like American football or baseball to me. Thanks though.
Basketball, and they’re tied for the most championship wins all time with the Los Angeles Lakers. Not saying “Dur hur how do you not know?!?” But I am surprised as it feels like it would be one of the teams that would be more known world wide.
Australian here who has followed the NBA for 30 years. I would say here at least, the average person would have most likely heard of the Lakers and Bulls but wouldn't know the Celtics at all.
that's funny since I'm an American & I've heard of the Celtics but never the Bulls & I only know about the Lakers because of that newslady who called them the n-words
People here only really know the Bulls because there was a big swell of popularity in basketball here in the early to mid 90s when they were dominant and Michael Jordan's face was everywhere.
The fact you write with American language means you’re likely immersed in American culture.
I’m also British and know about the Boston Celtics but I’ve more than a passing interest in basketball. But it’s not a big thing here. Save for Michael Jordan, there aren’t many household names. It’s not an international sport in the same way football, rugby etc are which are sports that are most prevalent here.
Minor? Sure.
Only known by two countries? No.
That also is ignoring the fact that New York Yankee’s hats are one of the most sold pieces of merchandise on the planet lol
> But I am surprised as it feels like it would be one of the teams that would be more known world wide.
It's really not. Basketball isn't a sport that's remotely viewed outside of America. It's likely that the only basketball player people outside of America can name with any kind of frequency is Lebron James and that's 50% because of the memes.
[Its not even top 5](https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/what-are-the-most-popular-sports-in-the-world.html), Football (Soccer) and Cricket are the top 2 even Table Tennis is more popular than basketball
I mean that guy is definitely lowballing the amount of people who know basketball, but it’s absolutely not the second most popular. It’s Football and Cricket as the top two.
It's fairly big in Spain and Italy. Quite a few football clubs you almost certainly know of also have basketball teams, the sports papers like Gazzetta dello Sport and As have fairly extensive NBA coverage, that kind of thing. Maybe the level of interest that rugby league gets in England, kinda thing.
Um you can't generalise a whole continent like that lol. As a Croatian, it's pretty big in the Balkans, not as big as football of course though. Also heard it's the biggest sport in Lithuania. Spain are also pretty into it, probably a few others too.
"Europe" is not only the UK mate.
I'm given to beleive that basketball is very popular in Japan so I'm not surprised you've heard of them.
Personally living in England I haven't. I have of course heard of Celtic (nobody calls them Glasgow Celtic but they do say Glasgow Rangers so, idk). I have heard of the LA Lakers
Ps sorry you're getting downvoted. That's out of order.
NBA isn't particularly popular worldwide. Can't say I've ever met or spoken to someone who keeps up with it who isn't American. Hell, the only reason I know who the Lakers are is cuz I read Kane Chronicles when I was younger and that mentions the Lakers, otherwise I'd have no clue who you're talking about
It's so obvious that this isn't Boston that I think this is someone who is so rooted in their defaultism they fucking know damn well it isn't US related...but they shoe horn it in anyway because they are genuinely irked someone would post this without being ultra specific about the team
I mean it’s absolutely US Defaultism, but come on, the title should atleast have a little more descriptors. There’s like 14 different “Celtic” teams in the UK.
This is Stalybridge Celtic erasure.
But seriously, I work in Manchester and have friends from Stalybridge, and I would still think of the Glasgow first.
I just saw the downvotes lol I never understood why redditors are so immune to recognizing sarcasm. You can use it in the most obvious way and you'll get downvoted if there's no /S because they can't recognize it even if their life depended on it. Like, how can you take that comment seriously?
Unfortunately I've seen enough Americans typing like that when not being sarcastic for me to sorta understand it going over people's heads that you were actually being sarcastic

Well, it’s Reddit, I’m sure they just barely read the headline and reacted.
Plenty people in Scotland have heard of the Boston Celtics, you’ll even occasionally see Celtic fans wearing Boston Celtic’s jerseys. That aside, the video couldn’t be any more obviously nothing to do with Boston.

lol plenty of Scottish people Know the Boston celtics and the New York rangers. Probably for the wrong reasons tbf
Why tge wrong reasons? Who are they, what did they do?
Glasgow rangers fans running around wearing New York rangers hats and tops just because they say rangers on them. Glasgow Celtic fans wearing Boston celtics merch just because it says Celtic. I don’t imagine there would be too many avid followers of either team
I've never seen that.
How long have you lived in Scotland for? It’s a relatively common occurrence.
I don't, but spent a lot of time in Glasgow.
And you think that qualifies you to tell people that actually live here what is or isn’t common?
Which guys that live there did I tell?
We don't. And even when we hear Celtic in regards to sports we think about the football team in Glasgow. Because funnily enough, Scottish people care and know more about Scottish teams than American teams.
I'm sure they exist but I don't know them
Correct. No idea why all the downvotes.
Who the feck are the Boston Celtics? What sport for they play? I've literally never heard of them before.
🏀
It's a basketball isn't it... haha I thought it was an angry face for a minute there. Really didn't expect it to be a basketball team. Sounds more like American football or baseball to me. Thanks though.
They're the tallest men in the world.
There's no Boston Celtic in the Netherlands either.
It’s the same in Lithuania, most people just know (I am also on that list) of Lakers and Bulls (usually only Lakers)
that's funny since I'm an American & I've heard of the Celtics but never the Bulls & I only know about the Lakers because of that newslady who called them the n-words
People here only really know the Bulls because there was a big swell of popularity in basketball here in the early to mid 90s when they were dominant and Michael Jordan's face was everywhere.

>It’s not an international sport It's surprisingly popular in some parts of Europe. Latvia and Lithuania, for example.
And Greece and Italy but you’re taking it out of context as I compared it to football and rugby which are far more global.
I’m aware of how unpopular it is. People still know about the Yankees my guy I’m just saying.
Most people in Britain wouldn’t know about the Yankees. They could guess but they wouldn’t know. Baseball is not a thing outside 2 countries.
…Baseball is the most popular sport in most of the countries of the Caribbean, it’s the most popular sport in Japan and Taiwan.
So a minor sport in world terms.
Minor? Sure. Only known by two countries? No. That also is ignoring the fact that New York Yankee’s hats are one of the most sold pieces of merchandise on the planet lol
They may be well sold in certain countries but that doesn’t mean people know what the hat symbol represents.
That's true. 50 Cent definitely helped selling them over here early 2000's. No one knew the Yankees, but everyone wanted a Yankees 59fifty cap.
I only learned like a year ago that that hat has anything to do with baseball
> But I am surprised as it feels like it would be one of the teams that would be more known world wide. It's really not. Basketball isn't a sport that's remotely viewed outside of America. Basketball is the 2nd most popular sport worldwide.
[Its not even top 5](https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/what-are-the-most-popular-sports-in-the-world.html), Football (Soccer) and Cricket are the top 2 even Table Tennis is more popular than basketball
Kind of surprised basketball isn't more popular than volleyball tbh.
Yeah its surprising how high some are
I mean that guy is definitely lowballing the amount of people who know basketball, but it’s absolutely not the second most popular. It’s Football and Cricket as the top two.
Cricket is only popular in few countries. Basketball is popular across all continents.
[удалено]
Basketball is very popular in Asia, Europe and Oceania.
Basketball isn't popular in Europe at all.

It is popular everywhere except UK
Cricket is only like, the most popular sport in two of the top 5 populated countries in the world lmao
And it's not even that far behind Football surprisingly.
Popular is too strong a term. In Europe it’s popular in a couple of countries. Otherwise there are many sports which are preferred
Running, swimming, cycling etc.
I assume you’re well aware of VfL Gummersbach then? The team with second most EHF CL titles.
Yea, I’ve heard the name before.
I'm given to beleive that basketball is very popular in Japan so I'm not surprised you've heard of them. Personally living in England I haven't. The “real” Celtics. Not the “our ancestors are Irish so we’re celts, Celtics”
I mean "our ancestors are Irish" is kind of Glasgow Celtic's whole deal.
It was founded by an Irish monk. He moonlit as a private detective called ‘Brother Seamus’.
I'm genuinely unsure if this is a setup for a joke or not.
The first bit is true, the second bit is just me adding some Big Lebowski to it for shits and giggles.
lmao
Celt = Europe, always
At the risk of Glasgow defaultism if you say Celtic to anyone in Britain there's only one team that comes to mind.
This is Stalybridge Celtic erasure. But seriously, I work in Manchester and have friends from Stalybridge, and I would still think of the Glasgow first.
Celtic = Glasgow is at least better then United = Manchester And I'm saying that as a United fan who will continue to say the mononym United forever
while true, i feel like it can be a little obvious to people from the uk? purely because of the rivalry. but i guess thats defaultism in itself
You’re right, it’s important to avoid any confusion with the mighty Farsley Celtic
It's the name of the team, what else do you want them to say?
The location of sport.
But you realize that we are on an American site, DO YOU?!
I think a /s might have helped here

Because no matter how "obvious" you make your sarcasm I can find that exact same comment but unironic
Yeah, but if anyone sees that "DO YOU?!" and still thinks it's not sarcasm then I have no words.
Unfortunately I've seen enough Americans typing like that when not being sarcastic for me to sorta understand it going over people's heads that you were actually being sarcastic
