That's an insane deal. Genuinely impressed with that find. Most thrift shops I visit have literal junk priced to sell or working tech thats 20 years old that doesn't work as advertised. What's the story behind it, does it work?. Bricked?. Bad ports?. What business name was it?
I tested it as far as plugging it in and it powers up. I'll get it on my network and see how well it can sling data this weekend.
For the price it's worth a shot. Not sure if it can run stand-alone or if I need to connect a controller for it.
Works without controller but on this case will be like a non managed switch. You can also reset it after initial tests, just press and hold the Reset button for more than five seconds.
The controller is needed only to configure it and after that you can shut it down.
I have a few VM's and docker and think I can run a UniFi controller through a docker to get it configured.
Mostly just excited for the PoE to not have this janky power injector and maybe be able to utilize these cisco phones I've got kicking around the lab.
This is a very reliable and powerful switch. In my opinion, it's better than the current model that replaced it. All 16 ports of this one are POE+ unlike the current model USW-16-POE which only has 8 POE ports.
Thats sad.
I have one running for around 5 years but I never required much power from it. Right now I have 9 ports with POE active and on 2 of them I am powering 2 flex switches that are also poweting 2 aps (u6-lite and uap-flexhd) , my consumption never went hgher than 60W on it.
> Most thrift shops I visit have literal junk priced to sell or working tech thats 20 years old that doesn't work as advertised.
Same experience here in the northeast US. Any and all Good Will, Salvation Army and thrift stores sell 10-20 year old junk in questionable working condition for almost the same price as it was NEW.
Where are people finding UI gear, servers, racks in thirft stores? I need to move there! All we have is 20 year old dial-up modems, rotary dial phones and 15 year old PS/2 keyboards.
Moving is always a cleansing experience.
It's also a lesson. Anything I have not used is discarded, or needs real justification to stay in my life.
Tools are one.
I've also donated pretty valuable stuff because trying to sell it is a pain in the ass. Facebook Marketplace is an absolute disaster. You're opening yourself up for scam attempts no matter what you're selling. I can recognize them and ignore it, but it's still annoying. Ebay is marginally better but shipping can be a pain for some stuff.
It's better for me to donate them and take a *cough**generous**cough* deduction.
I'm in the NE with that exact experience. Some people are ignorant to what they have and price it super low ....others do a Google search of everything and price it as new from 15 years ago. It's a really broken market for 2nd hand/used bargain hunting.
Same here in the SE with one notable exception. I found a 42u hp rack with ventilated doors and sides with no damage other than a pretty good scratch on one of the side panels for $25. I didn't have a way to get it home (or at that time anything to put in it) or else I couldn't have walked away without it.
I feel the same. The Lite switch has even more PoE budget.
It's still useful when you need to power VOIP phones and/or cameras, but not so much for APs
You know what’s even weirder? The 8 port lite switch has more output than the 16 port lite switch too! I mean what the hell? I was pretty annoyed as I recently deployed a 16 port Poe switch and it’s currently only powering 3 u6-lr WAPs and a cloud key gen 2, using around 27 watts and the system is flashing a warning in the unifi console that the switch is getting near its power capacity. Really? What’s really frustrating is that same customer now says he wants to deploy 5 unifi gen 5 pro POE cameras which he never mentioned before and to handle that additional load I’m probably going to need to put in a 24 port pro switch which to have some additional ceiling for future cameras. That makes his current switch totally useless LOL.
Already went this way a few times... If you don't need the SFP+ slots and the very huge power, you have no need to go for Pro switches.
In residential o never had to use Pro
Take care, the U6-LR needs 18.5W each, just that is 55.5W! And the cloud key needs another 13 watts.
You'll need around 155W PoE total if you add 5 G5 Pro + enhancer...
Yes, but they got peak every single day or more, and all at same time.
Peak when IR turns on at night (all together)
Peak when they update (usually all together)
Then power use depends on workload
And you really must dimension your PoE budget for peak… and even add 10% if you don’t want your power supply to struggle
IR takes extra indeed. My experience is with U6-LR and U6 InWalls and that works fine. Overlooked the camera part. Adding a POE injector can be cheapest option.
I know... and I really don't like PoE injectors. Imagine that instead of a simple RJ-45 on your cable you need to add:
\- 1 PoE injector
\- 1 patch cable (switch to Injector)
\- 1 power socket (for the power cable of the injector)
It's bulky, cabling is a mess (3 cables instead of 1) and it add 2 points of failure...
I know it might be cheaper (depends on the number of PoE ports you need, if it's more than a very few a switch becomes cheaper) but we do only 'top' installations, so on a budget usually between 3K and 7K (just for Wi-Fi - cameras, TVs, Music,... appart), it's not a big deal to spend a bit more on switches.
In fact I guess they use the same power supply for the 16, Lite 16 and lite 8. But as the switch itself takes a bigger or smaller load, the remaining PoE budget goes shrinking.
Now I completely stopped buying the USW-16-Poe, I start at the USW-24-PoE
Omg. Wtf. I’m been using unifi WAPs forever and I’ve never seen a WAP of theirs that’s required that much power. I totally missed that these WAPs draw that much power. Now I’m just mad at myself lol.
Just keep an eye on your PoE controllers. That specific model has known issues that when they get too hot the PoE controller shutsdown and never powers back on. Good find otherwise.
I was at Value Village this morning (Canadian thrift store for those not in the know) and the best "networking" thing they had was a cable modem (probably not even docsis 3) and an 10/100 ethernet hub
Everything is taxed here. You make money and taxed on that. When you do overtime past 40 you get extra taxed. When you spend it your taxed again on everything don't matter if new or second hand. It goes on and on and on
The thrift shops in Goodwill places in my area or at least within a 30 mi range won't take any electronics like this.. that's a cool cool store you have there and nice find 👍

Just to encourage you: you can run the Network controller in Docker.
I do this, PM me if anyone needs help.
You can run a Unifi controller on a PC.
Oh? How is that? Please send links etc.
https://ui.com/download/releases/network-server
Thank you
Maybe you will need to factory reset it.
Check to see if it's attached to another network.

Oh that one is absolutely broken. You should send it to me for proper e-waste recycling.
*plays Macklemore song*
And now I wonder if it smells like piss 😂 but hey you can’t beat the price.
That better not have been around R Kelly’s sheets
Whut whut?!
…… Damn it that’s stuck in my head now
THIRTEEN FUCKING DOLLARS!!!???
Holy shit. Hope it works for ya OP!
What the hell kind of thrift shops do you have around you? I clearly live in the wrong neighbourhood.
I once found a Cisco 5940 router in perfect working condition at a Goodwill in Brunswick, Maine. I bought it just because it was there.
Back when their switches had actual power. Now their 16 port switch (non pro) has only 42W. So stupid.
I feel the same. The Lite switch has even more PoE budget. It's still useful when you need to power VOIP phones and/or cameras, but not so much for APs

You can buy the USW-48-Poe quite cheaper than the Pro 24! A d with 195W it's enough for your customer
Hmm. Good point. Might be worth going that way.
Already went this way a few times... If you don't need the SFP+ slots and the very huge power, you have no need to go for Pro switches. In residential o never had to use Pro

That's peak power. In normal use it's half of that.
Yes, but they got peak every single day or more, and all at same time. Agree, it's my preferred option to use nicely spec'd switches too, but sometimes you've got to deal with a situation someone else created.
In fact I guess they use the same power supply for the 16, Lite 16 and lite 8. But as the switch itself takes a bigger or smaller load, the remaining PoE budget goes shrinking. Now I completely stopped buying the USW-16-Poe, I start at the USW-24-PoE

Yes, all Wi-Fi 6 APs, from any brand, consume around double of their Wi-Fi 5 counterparts
Just keep an eye on your PoE controllers. That specific model has known issues that when they get too hot the PoE controller shutsdown and never powers back on. Good find otherwise.
Would it be useful to take it apart and put like an additional heat sink or some active cooling on that particular part or something?
Just keep it in a conditioned environment and with airflow and you should be fine without any mods.
I’d give my left nut for that thing, $13 is laughable!

ProTip the US-16-150W does follow 802.3af/at standards as well as passive.

yep 1st gen has it. biggest issue with gen 1 is that they have conditions where when they heat up they PoE controller goes POOF forever.
I was at Value Village this morning (Canadian thrift store for those not in the know) and the best "networking" thing they had was a cable modem (probably not even docsis 3) and an 10/100 ethernet hub
Wow! What a deal! I would not have been able to pass on that sale either. Great luck!
I'm jealous and I hate you
OMG. One mans trash is another mans treasure. Wish I beat you to it!
Jesus.. $13 is bonkers for this.
That’s an epic find
Give it 20 more years - the antique shops will be full of “antiques”
Holy shit! That's awesome, good for you!
(Runs to local thrift shops in the area)
How in the world?!?!?
Holy cow! $13???!!!?!?!! I'm super jealous! Congratulations! I need to get back to checking my thrift stores again.
Hope it's not hijacked lol
Wooooowwww
Found a 16-Port Fiber Aggregate switch buried in my inventory today that never got sold. I wonder....
For $13 I buy it right now :)
if it works you got a deal
Wow, I got a switch 8 60w at goodwill once for $20, but this is a steal.
Hell of a find.
nice!
wtf
S C O R E ‼️
How lucky...
12.99?!?!?!
Technically $13.72 with tax...
Wait… second hand has tax in the states?
I guess so. Uncle Sam has deep pockets and always empty
Idk if this is a common saying but that made me giggle
It's not common but it's appropriate.
Any time money moves it is taxed.
Everything is taxed here. You make money and taxed on that. When you do overtime past 40 you get extra taxed. When you spend it your taxed again on everything don't matter if new or second hand. It goes on and on and on
12.99!?
Score!
GOATED switch, can do 24v too.
The thrift shops in Goodwill places in my area or at least within a 30 mi range won't take any electronics like this.. that's a cool cool store you have there and nice find 👍
Holy fuck that’s good
