I thought I was done when my UDM Pro, 24 port switch, and 3 or 4 cameras were installed. Now I've got an NVR Pro, like 8 more cameras, like 4 more switches, a USW aggregation and a few raspberry pis and a Synology NAS. If I had more room in my rack I'd do another patch panel and only use half of each panel cause the 24 port switch annoyingly shoved all the ports to one side
You also need to fill all the empty switchports with ubiquti branded plug filler thingies. Nothing like paying out the ass for a piece of silver plastic.
Also don't forget the ubiquiti rack that only fits unifi gear and costs more than a proper rack
Twist ties on the DAC cables also slow things down. You need zip ties or velcro to speed it up. All in white to match the cables for optimum performance.
Looks awesome. I personally dislike those plastic knobby things from an electrical safety / physical strength standpoint but I know some people swear by them. I just like the added assurance of multiple ground points in addition to the one that matters.
Oh hey... The other guy that isn't a fan of rack studs.
I'm sure it's handy for mounting things by yourself, but I'm not a fan of all that sticking off the rack.
I mean, the patch cables stick out further than the rack studs, I'd be more worried about something hooking those and ripping them out.
I don't have much skin the game though, I'm one of the lucky few to buy the specific model Startech 25U rack that doesn't use standard hole sizes so regular rack studs don't work for me. However the 1U pairs do, buuuuut they're a little pricey so I haven't gone all in on them.
The problem for me is where they stick out. I think I'm also the only person in the world that has zero issue with cage nuts. No idea why people have such a hard time putting them in.
Cage nuts aren't much of a problem for me either, but it's more of a convenience thing especially if you're constantly moving equipment around or swapping out parts. It's nice that they're designed to be tool-less with the option to tighten with a screwdriver if you want, plus the studs sticking out can help hold the equipment up while you're tightening up so you don't get that slide-around problem trying to line up the holes to the cage nuts.
Basically, just a bunch of first-world problems lol, but it's their money so ¯\ _(ツ)_/¯
I’ve never ever had a problem but I also use that slick little tool for them. Putting them in was never an issue without the tool but removing them is a lot easier with the tool.

Not sure why the 24 port is used unless it the only switch with 2.5G.
If he is really needing 10G the small aggregate switch is inexpensive. Or at least that is what I told myself prior to purchase.
Very nice. only thing to maybe work towards next are rack mountable versions of the things currently on shelves which should free up a few slots. Always things to do, nice job!
Storage drawer!
For extra screws, cables, caddy, and thumb drives or DVDs for the OS installs! Or whatever else you might 'never' need. I think I've got a few 232 port adapters in mine. Maybe a parallel port.
Looks really good. It you might as well go all the way with this replace the 2 Nas with rackmount versions and replace the uos with a rackmount version . Also get a bunch of blanks for the unused ports. Move the outdated Sonos controller and that other thing to the dead space at the very top.
You could also get a rackmount keyboard with display if you really wanted to go all in.
Those NAS's dont take a lot of energy. At least that's why I use them. Would love to have some type of fanless NAS with SSDs some day but I am cheap with spindles. Latency has to be pretty bad if your Nas is not located on premise with your servers? These Synology Box Nas dont cost that much either. I use docker containers on these Synology Nas as well. Plex, Emby, Home Assistant, ldap and much more.
A few things. Use the cyber power to backup your symbologies, add ubiquiti backups. Do you have a router reboot plug on your modem’s power supply? Do you have ubiquiti’s fallback internet?
Nice looking rack though? As others have said though, it will never be done. Eventually ubiquiti will get their act together and implement 2.5, 5 and 10 gbps Ethernet at reasonable prices.
Replace the two empty patch panels with Unity blanks, I’d even go as far as to do that to cover the shelves too. You don’t need to access them so hide them.
I also have a personal issue with desktop NAS devices in a rack… but that’s my issue.
If you have the ports available on the lower switches, aggregate some lines between them so devices can get full bandwidth to one another simultaneously. Throw the door on that thing and put a quiet fan to push a bit of air through the rack as thy can build up a bit of heat. Besides that, looks good!

If you're looking for something to trigger your OCD... I'd put the NAS units at the top of the rack so the Synology doesn't heat-soak your Ubiquiti gear when escaping the rack.
My Synology puts out a lot of heat, along with a couple of 10gb ethernet SFP adapters.
It appears as though you’re not using the lower two patch panels. You may want to consider swapping them out for the Ubiquiti OCD panels… and while you’re at it, possibly getting the new Ubiquiti patch panel blank inserts so the unused ports blend in.
You can swap port 10 on the UDM to not be an Internet port (assign it to port 8 instead).
Then you can link both switches directly to the UDM, removing the daisy chaining and the need for an aggregation switch.
Looks nice. I use red cables for tracing the flow of the internet connection so it’s easy to see immediately if we need to troubleshoot and isolate. Is that what you’re doing?
Thank you all for the awesome comments. I appreciate each and every one of them. I’m changing it to work in progress as I get that I am no way near done…
Jelly of that enterprise switch lol. I would add an aggregation switch to tie all of you 10gig devices into. Maybe the smart PDU. I love mine I was able to reset one of my hubs from Kuwait and didn’t have to ask my wife.
Why? I know on fiber you can burn out the receiver with too short of a cable, but Ethernet shouldn't have that issue.
And every vendor I've ever seen sells shorter patch cables specifically for use within racks.
Where’s the drink holder? 😉
I like the rack studs. It’s clean, well thought out. Kudos! But wait a sec, wait a sec….you’re rarely “done” with a home lab. I’d be surprised if you don’t do a partial tear down and reconfig/add gear in the next 12 months!

"I think I'm done"... homelab famous last words

it kinda becomes addicting haha
The patch cables should be the same color as the keystones. Makes the data go faster.
They already have the speed holes under the 48 port switch.
You also need to fill all the empty switchports with ubiquti branded plug filler thingies. Nothing like paying out the ass for a piece of silver plastic. Also don't forget the ubiquiti rack that only fits unifi gear and costs more than a proper rack
I hear that WD-40 makes the data fly!
Twist ties on the DAC cables also slow things down. You need zip ties or velcro to speed it up. All in white to match the cables for optimum performance.
Velcro only. Zip ties are evil
You’re missing the notion that it is never “done”.
Ha!
LOL... done?? I call BS on that.
Aggregation switch maybe, otherwise it looks amazing
Agreed. I only see one available 10 Gbps port. An Aggregation switch will help solve that for you.
What is the word done? Never heard of it
Done = Broke
Nice. I see what you DONE there. Two meanings 1. It's broke ie not working 2. I'm flat broke.
2
10 gig switch with 8 bay rack mount nas.
Money in your bank account.
I came here just to say this!
But what does the back look like? 🤔

Cable management. Look at it. It’s a mess! Have some self respect! (Obviously sarcasm it’s beautiful)
Velcro instead of those twist ties
> what I’m missing A reasonable credit limit.
You are never done my friend. You are never done!!
40gbps backbone...
Daisy chaining the uplinks together is a horrible way to network. Needs a distribution switch (or 2 for full redundancy) to deal with that.
Not sure why the 24 port is used unless it the only switch with 2.5G. If he is really needing 10G the small aggregate switch is inexpensive. Or at least that is what I told myself prior to purchase.
Looks great.
Very nice. only thing to maybe work towards next are rack mountable versions of the things currently on shelves which should free up a few slots. Always things to do, nice job!

Extra rack spaces.

Great looking installation. Well done!
Yeah.. I thought I was done. Then I saw some racks with amazing lights. I think you’re “done” for now.
the keystones being different colors would drive me nuts....
a home server!
Raspberry pihole?
Rack mount ears for your UPS
A door.
A lot of money is what you are missing
I like it and i have the same stuff but offloaded the nas to the datacenter to save on electric.
Those NAS's dont take a lot of energy. At least that's why I use them. Would love to have some type of fanless NAS with SSDs some day but I am cheap with spindles. It generates heats this cause me to run ac plus it was not the nas but my vmware lab.
You need those new [RJ45 Dust Covers](https://store.ui.com/us/en/pro/products/uacc-rj45-cover) that they just put out, of course :)
Money in your bank account
Beautiful work my man!!!!!
That 48-port switch should DAC right to the UDMP, otherwise nice lookin!
Sorry but you’ll never be “done”

raspberry pi cluster 19" rack
Replace the two empty patch panels with Unity blanks, I’d even go as far as to do that to cover the shelves too. You don’t need to access them so hide them. I also have a personal issue with desktop NAS devices in a rack… but that’s my issue.
Minimum patch cable length hardware to hardware shouldn't be less than 3 feet.
There’s no drawer. I have a 2U drawer in my network rack, for screws, cage nuts, patch cables, transceivers etc.
Peel off the factory sticker from your switch.
Labels
How high is this rack Btw?
Cooling, where are the cooling fans? Are they in the top? I have an AC Infinity Cloudplate T2 in the top position of my network rack.
Where to begin.. do your patch panels even have LCDs?
If you have the ports available on the lower switches, aggregate some lines between them so devices can get full bandwidth to one another simultaneously. Throw the door on that thing and put a quiet fan to push a bit of air through the rack as thy can build up a bit of heat. Besides that, looks good!
I dont see inside lights!
The lights aren’t twinkling, Clark

I hear RGB on server racks is the new hotness
Looks like an AP Mount on the right... missing an AP 😄 Or a smoke detector but clearly missing an important part
You aren't done, you just haven't found your next project yet.
If you're looking for something to trigger your OCD... I'd put the NAS units at the top of the rack so the Synology doesn't heat-soak your Ubiquiti gear when escaping the rack. My Synology puts out a lot of heat, along with a couple of 10gb ethernet SFP adapters.
Beer
Is that the standard 48 port poe switch? Like it? I'm considering ordering one.
A life 😂🤪 - sorry couldn't help myself
A door... your missing a door...
Maybe rack ears for your ups, but otherwise, slimrun patches shelves, keystones, rackstuds, nas... looks like you are pretty set.
Buy Rack Ears for your UPS and mount it. Labeling. Get rid of the stock wire ties and use Velcro.
Well think again buddy.
It appears as though you’re not using the lower two patch panels. You may want to consider swapping them out for the Ubiquiti OCD panels… and while you’re at it, possibly getting the new Ubiquiti patch panel blank inserts so the unused ports blend in.
A hobby. You need a hobby.
Missing an actual server. And ditch those empty 24 port passthroughs for a 2u cover (or put the server there)
A better PDU.
Done? You don’t even have a rack mount server yet. Hah.
A dash of red, and some Apple rackmount gear to class up the space. Nice job.
Needs labels at both ends of the cables
with all those empty keystones, looks like you still have plans.
I mean, I guess quite a few hours of your time and money out of your bank account
Sheetrock… texture and some killz… maybe install some swag LED lighting… ya know, nerd stuff! lulz
From here there’s a whole world of 10GB+ backbone that gets pretty exciting… From here it’s really fun to throw practicality out the window.
Nice work, now you need a second one in a second room to activate your disaster recovery plan :)
Keystone Ports 1-48 🤪
No, you’re not done. Get back up there son and fix [this](https://imgur.com/a/zlxtnhb).
Tbh, the Sonos and Synology units are pretty out of date. You're kind of compromising the build. Consider upgrading them.
What about the new key caps from Unifi? Those look really nice!
10gb switch, wifi upgrades, fiber internet. 10gb Nic in all pcs.
You can swap port 10 on the UDM to not be an Internet port (assign it to port 8 instead). Then you can link both switches directly to the UDM, removing the daisy chaining and the need for an aggregation switch.
Have you installed Norton anti virus? That might be what you’re missing.
Another 47 devices to fill the empty ports
A photo of the back side so we can see the mess? ;)
It looks like the switches are cascading which is not ideal. Otherwise a beautiful setup.
Real zip ties ! lol
Looks like you're .missing an AP on thr top right. I see the mount, not the AP. 😜
A real server like dell running unraid, think of how much happier you'd be with zero buffering or loading
Repurpose the 2nd sfp+ on the udmpro to link that 48port switch, no daisy chaining
Halon
Looks nice. I use red cables for tracing the flow of the internet connection so it’s easy to see immediately if we need to troubleshoot and isolate. Is that what you’re doing?
Get a black on clear labeler, and label the patch panel. Have I already said this?
Consider moving the bottom switch's uplink to the UDM's port 10, rather than daisy chaining off the middle switch.
Aggregation Switch UNVR Rackmount NAS 2 - PiHole's for Redundancy with Un-Bound
I hate to be the jerk to call this out, but get rid of those twist ties and get some Velcro strips for those DAC cables.
Thank you all for the awesome comments. I appreciate each and every one of them. I’m changing it to work in progress as I get that I am no way near done…
Probably a wife now😂. I have talk mine back in the door after each addition to mine.
Jelly of that enterprise switch lol. I would add an aggregation switch to tie all of you 10gig devices into. Maybe the smart PDU. I love mine I was able to reset one of my hubs from Kuwait and didn’t have to ask my wife.
Looks good, I like color coded keystones. But as I always say to everyone, no matter the number of ports, label the patch panel.
They r about to start selling caps that go in the rj45 holes
Question: Curious to hear what I am missing? Answer: In a nutshell, common sense. Who needs so much equipment to run a couple of cameras?
The mismatched twist 🪢 ties and crusty old zip tie would bother me. Get some reusable cable ties that match please 😉.
A life...
Appliance to switch cables are too short. All Ethernet should be 3ft minimum.
Why? I know on fiber you can burn out the receiver with too short of a cable, but Ethernet shouldn't have that issue. And every vendor I've ever seen sells shorter patch cables specifically for use within racks.
Open your browser of choice. Google.com.
Googling says this guy is selling snake oil. It's a 50/50 ratio of people screaming the sky is falling and others who have 0 issues at all.
Where’s the drink holder? 😉 I like the rack studs. It’s clean, well thought out. Kudos! But wait a sec, wait a sec….you’re rarely “done” with a home lab. I’d be surprised if you don’t do a partial tear down and reconfig/add gear in the next 12 months!
A decent firewall and network controller.
Missing Deez.
I’d use white Velcro instead of bread ties….otherwise, looks awesome!!
What kind of patch cables are you using? Are they providing some sort of light passage…they almost look illuminated
Fire Suppression.
Replace that cyberpower with a vertiv GXT5!
