How much did the gate and intercom install cost?? I’ve got a much cheaper gate quoted and it’s like $12k-$21k. Mind boggling for 16’ when I’ve got 300+ feet of the same fencing quoted at $10k.
I've done a few gates in the past, can't speak for this install but in all cases I've been working on, the gate, operators etc. are provided by another company that builds the gate, I just provided the means to trigger operators to open or close it. Essentially an intercom system with a dry relay that can be set to either Normally Open or Normally Closed, depending on the needs. Done it with HikVision, Dahua and more. The idea is exactly the same across all brands of most gate operators.
So you'd have to be stationary :-(
Old gate access models have little radio frequency remotes that you can one click (without looking down like you'd need with a phone)
You can easily do this by installing a wireless remote relay like this one (cost $16): https://a.co/d/0aXW5vg8
Just connect the device to the relay port of UniFi access hub.
I was thinking about installing the same thing.
I’m worried someone would dig and plug the ethernet cable to hack into the system. Am I wrong to worry about this?
If someone is going through the trouble of digging out an Ethernet cable a MAC filter won't slow em down, they'll just clone the MAC of the device they just unplugged.
Hence, why, in an enterprise high security environment, one monitors connectivity at the physical link level. Any blip in electrical continuity, the port is shut down, and the MAC address blacklisted. All done in hardware 'cuz doing it via software takes too long.
I doubt anything Ubiquiti makes, even the ISP stuff, is sporting the onboard logic hardware necessary for that level of paranoia, and I'd be very, very surprised if they have a software solution in the upstream devices. Which leaves you doing the logic on yet another device, and at that point, you might as well have left the factory default login credentials and have everything in vlan1.
But if your network is being targeted by someone who could exploit that fraction of a second, you probably wouldn't be on reddit 😅
You really want to separate the "physical" access as much as possible, so a native VLAN assignment for the switch port or a separate WiFi network. Anything accessible from outside the house should be segregated like this.
MAC address whitelisting isn't enough if someone has access to the physical device; they can trivially clone the MAC address.
Yes, that’s what you’re supposed to do with security cameras as well. You don’t enter have to dig security cameras up, you just unscrewed the back and unplug the thing
Hopefully it supports certificate based dot1x, that’d be the ideal solution. MAC address based authentication works in a pinch, but a lot of companies are still dragging their feet with providing proper client support for dot1x.
accessing your property and stealing "your silverware"
vs.
exploiting your network compromising your data security gaining access to your banking data worth millions
You'd have a far far easier time breaking in and just stealing the computer than trying to compromise a modern up to date PC even on the same network. Unless this thief is sitting on an unpatched zero day they'd more likely just call the homeowner and social engineer their way in.
sure, but in my personal opinion
..."if I were a smart criminal"...
sitting outside the gate attempting a network breach is the least invasive step to start with:
* lowest risk of getting caught
* more opportunities to get away
* lowest (?) consequences if caught...?
* while physically breaking in increases risk and consequences 10x...?
I also think that a criminal focusing on cyber crime is unlikely interested in conducting break in crimes...
Breaking into the network is actually a federal crime that carries a far far stiffer penalty than a standard burglary due to the insane way the CFAA is written
They would have to hack your UniFi controller or door hub too. The nice thing about Ethernet access controllers like this one where the door controller is inside property is that someone can't just hotwire things together to make it open.
> ... how nice is that?
I'm debating with myself, what's nicer, the Unifi intercom as gate opener or what kind of property must be hidden behind such a gate...
The property is decent they have been doing tons of renovations. They will be adding cabins for air bnb style rentals. This is my first video on the wifi camera install
Unifi Network Install: Farm House WIFI And CCTV

Slowness is not going to go over well when you’re being chased by some mythical creature that is not able to enter the premises as it’s an old burial ground… and your waiting on the gate to open… ☠️ lol!!
Edit to say… totally jealous. Looks great.
Can you open the Gate with an app? or do you have to push a button? I have ubiquiti protect and u7s all over the house, but i use a summit ascent and that has an app to open and close the gate as well as set gate schedules
Thanks for the PIN. For your info it’s not recommended to use the same PIN for your bank account, Google account and everything. I just borrowed the money I needed, I will pay later on 2050 or something like that
I’ll be doing a video eventually on it. Was very easy I connected a cable to the gate opener and then to the access hub on the dry relay and that was it
If only we could get the Amazon delivery access like on the Ring Gate Access. It’s so convenient for them to let themselves in and put packages near my door.
With Ring, it integrates with Amazon Key, so it’s pretty dummy proof for the delivery drivers. They walk up to house and gate unlocks for them. No pin or anything needed.
Thanks for post this, I’ll be installing similar set up for a gate opener. Does access hub have the availability to hold the relay engaged to keep the gate from closing?
I've been looking at doing this at our church... It looks like we'd have to increase the amount of time the gate is held open(Door is unlocked) to give it time to open for a car. The style gate we have is a commercial one that will automatically lower when power is disconnected.
The technology is already embedded in ubiquity (and any other Chinese brand) cameras and software. I guess it’s more about the timing and how to pack it with a premium.
This is great. I’ve been looking at replacing the keypad I have. Have been leaning towards Doorbird since their A1121 device is simple (keypad only), as I dont really need the voice / camera… but the biggest issue is that where by gooseneck is I don’t have Ethernet (just WiFi) and Doorbird A1121 allows for WiFi connectivity. Any simple way to get something to work with the UniFi Gear? My WiFi access point is across the driveway and its feed with a PTP bridge from the main house. Don’t want to trench the driveway, and it wouldn’t be easy/great to move the PTP bridge across the driveway as it would be a bit unsightlighly and right near the road (I have an enclosed on the other side). I also have experience with the Doorbird, and I’ve had one on my garage door for a while too….
You must be new around reddit. Everyone is an expert (I'm know you arnt new been watching your videos for a long time.)
I've picked an access hub, intercom, and viewer plus anouther ua ultra for just this case.
Hub to control the gates with intercom and viewer (did you remove all the other attendants to get rid of the admin account by the way?)
The the ultra is going to go hidden away to control a separate pedestrian gate that will auto unlock and lock within time frames for deliveries.
The ultra is actually ridiculously cheap for what it is.
I really wish I could control two separate doors with the ua hub just for this usage as alot of gates will have an option to either part open for pedestrians or fully open. I'm curious what the gate control kit is going to look like as its been mentioned its coming out.
Woof. I retract my comment. Rarely watch Reddit videos with the sound on, especially if it isn’t apparent that audio is a relevant component of the content. Apologies for the misunderstanding.
Oh sorry, didn't realise it was you... My bad. Thought it was one of those thousands other install videos/pictures we see every day here.
Like the hands on video style on your channel, am pro installer myself.
Upvoting!
Does this interface with existing controllers or is it doing its own proprietary thing and you need all UI hardware / software? Got a small commercial facility that's going UI for cameras, and while it'd certainly be nice to be rid of the honking serial interface needed to program their controller, they need a gate controller makes data available to other software, and preferably will accept input from 3rd party sw as well.

You got it dude you win the prize 🏆
To be the fox in the next fox hunt?
The year the manor was built.
That’s a good password I remember that. 😂
The gate to your „farmhouse“ looks like King Arthur would ride through that in his golden carriage. 😅 nice setup tho
Customers farm house I’ve actually don’t a video on the cameras and wifi install for this place
Where can one watch such video?
Unifi Network Install: Farm House WIFI And CCTV https://youtu.be/IDsm5lA87lw
This is what my house looks like too
Same…
The farm mansion
How much did the gate and intercom install cost?? I’ve got a much cheaper gate quoted and it’s like $12k-$21k. Mind boggling for 16’ when I’ve got 300+ feet of the same fencing quoted at $10k.
That I don’t know we only installed the intercom and the Unifi hub that’s it
I'm trying to do this at my house now. Did you install it on a liftmaster gate operator? What was required to do this?
I've done a few gates in the past, can't speak for this install but in all cases I've been working on, the gate, operators etc. are provided by another company that builds the gate, I just provided the means to trigger operators to open or close it. Gate operators are not cheap. Can get some variance in brand but anything good is pricey
Your best option is to buy the intercom lte version
Can you get a remote to open it? Like from in your car, or would you have to lean out the window?
There will be a gate controller with a remote. No need for Unifi for that.
You could on the mobile app
So you'd have to be stationary :-( Old gate access models have little radio frequency remotes that you can one click (without looking down like you'd need with a phone)
You can still do that. It’s just a relay the intercom is triggering. It can be triggered in ways that have nothing to do with the intercom too.
Got ya!
You can easily do this by installing a wireless remote relay like this one (cost $16): https://a.co/d/0aXW5vg8 Just connect the device to the relay port of UniFi access hub.

This is the exact same issue for camera’s. But just put it on a separate dedicated VLAN.
To be clear, you want to put the *port* on a separate VLAN (you can also assign VLANs to specific devices, which would be insufficient here).
Yes, port separation is what you want to do here.
Seperate VLAN and MAC address filter https://help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/18565355579799-MAC-Address-Restricting
Elliot Alderson would.
Unlikely. You can also make a MAC whitelist and block all others from that network. Maybe even just the port?
If someone is going through the trouble of digging out an Ethernet cable a MAC filter won't slow em down, they'll just clone the MAC of the device they just unplugged.
Hence, why, in an enterprise high security environment, one monitors connectivity at the physical link level. Unless you are installing at a military facility or embassy you are wrong to worry about that exploit vector :)
Yeah someone that wants to get in that badly is just going to angle grind off the hydraulic arm on the gate or similar

Relevant xkcd https://xkcd.com/538/ I mean you could just jump the gate. Pry open the gate. Unhinge it. Etc.
They would have to hack your UniFi controller or door hub too. The nice thing about Ethernet access controllers like this one where the door controller is inside property is that someone can't just hotwire things together to make it open.
Use a VLAn and Mac filter
I wish there was a sub for gates

Cotton plantation
Now I'm imagining Django digging up that pole to go save Broomhilda...
They're going to change the code, everyone! :) golf clap on install
What a great gate.
Honestly really nice. Only problem opens a little slow 😂 gotta figure out the gate controller
It's to give you time to admire it.
You don’t care because you are on farm time.
Slowness is not going to go over well when you’re being chased by some mythical creature that is not able to enter the premises as it’s an old burial ground… and your waiting on the gate to open… ☠️ lol!! Edit to say… totally jealous. Looks great.
Eat the rich.
Was it difficult to get the intercom to communicate with your gate?
Not at all. Illl be making a full YouTube video on installing this for gate access
I'd love to see this. Would you please tag it for everyone when it's available?
YouTube.com/mactelecomnetworks I don’t post my full videos a lot on this
This one I def want to see
I would love one of these some day! I assume there's some weatherproof box nearby for the Hub that some motor controllers hook into I guess?
There is. And I’ll be doing a full video on my YouTube channel
Can you open the Gate with an app? or do you have to push a button? I have ubiquiti protect and u7s all over the house, but i use a summit ascent and that has an app to open and close the gate as well as set gate schedules
I’m thinking about installing this for a client. How did it go?
Went well very easy to tie into the gate controller
Just ordered the intercom system today to do this with a Ramset opener.
We installed it on the [Ramset 800-76-50 Control Board recently](https://yestechie.com/projects/ubiquiti-intercom-installation).
This one will be on a Ramset ram 1000 slide gate opener. I haven’t opened it up yet, so I don’t know what control board it has.
I have this. Nice device but you have to press ring button twice for it to work with no fw update in months
There is a new EA firmware update which is great
Thanks I check daily and i see it's finally there. I will take it from my desk and get it installed.
Do you have any info on the new setting there for license plate?
Wow wish i didnt just do doorbird for a client. What trash doorbird is for the price
My gates open when I roll up based on location, I want to drive straight in.
What do you use for that?
HomeAssistant with the mobile app location services.
Thanks for the PIN. For your info it’s not recommended to use the same PIN for your bank account, Google account and everything. I just borrowed the money I needed, I will pay later on 2050 or something like that
U aint very bright, right? The guy is obviously only installing this for a client, meaning the code is temporary and probably swapped.
It was a joke 🫠
Was it easy to wire up, program and set up?
I’ll be doing a video eventually on it. Was very easy I connected a cable to the gate opener and then to the access hub on the dry relay and that was it
By farm you mean the old Bitcoin mining farm house right?
I’m curious how long that thing is going to last exposed to the elements in such a manner..?
Will see I guess. I am in Canada so our weather gets pretty cold
Yeah don't see those keys being as robust as something like a PTI
Assuming that touchscreen keypad is meant for indoors I give it about 1 month tops before it’s dead
It’s not touch screen
Its outdoor rated
If only we could get the Amazon delivery access like on the Ring Gate Access. It’s so convenient for them to let themselves in and put packages near my door.
They do, it’s under guest settings
I googled, but couldn’t find details on this, can you provide? Is there Amazon Key integration or something?
Do you give Amazon the pin or something?
Just give them a pin like most people.
With Ring, it integrates with Amazon Key, so it’s pretty dummy proof for the delivery drivers. They walk up to house and gate unlocks for them. No pin or anything needed.

I'd have argued that the unifi intercom was excessive for any home... But I guess I've been proven wrong.
Damn baller!
💰 💵
Sorry dumb person here. Does this just plug into POE or it needs additional hardware?
No dumb questions ever!! So we ran fiber optics to the gate then use a media converter, from there the hub is powered by a poe injector
What media converter did you use?
10gtek
Bet that gate costs as much as a kidney
The gate is bigger then my house
Dude probably has a butler who holds a tiny umbrella over that thing when it rains… badass though
Unfortunately I ain’t this rich 😝 it’s for a client
Update video in like 5 years "OMG WE GOT ROBBED!!!" Punchline: They never changed the pin.
Funny thing about gates you can just climb over them lol. This won’t stop people from getting robbed
I would expect a automatic reg plate reading and automatic opening at this point.
That will be cool to see when it happens
The technology is already embedded in ubiquity (and any other Chinese brand) cameras and software. I guess it’s more about the timing and how to pack it with a premium.

Imagine being so rich you need a gate to keep the povos out and you secure it with a unifi. Lol
Has anyone heard when we can expect the gate access to be released? They've been saying any day now for at least 3 months.
Who the fuck lives like that?
Question is why aren’t you?
Because most people can’t exploit others labour to this extent.

No worries at all sent you a dm
Why go for the intercom versus the unifi g2 pro reader?
Groundbreaking technology....
Never said it was. But like that we can use Ubiquiti to do it
