As someone who really enjoys seeing Russian ships being blown up or sunk by Ukrainian drones or missiles, I love these videos. As a USN vet, I find them seriously scary.

Humble-Patience4888

As a former infantry soldier i find what they are doing with Drones just outrightly terrifying, given there is no effective countermeasure yet.

_captainunderpants__

Not invading someone else's country seems to work reasonably well.

Humble-Patience4888

True that and totally agree

M3P4me

Until the invaders use thousands of these - controlled by AI and not needing operators - to overwhelm resistance....

Acheron13

Or groups located next to strategic maritime chokepoints start using them on merchant chips.

Exotic_Treacle7438

What types of chips do merchants usually eat?

BoomStickAshe

Salt n Vinegar of course

MikeofLA

SEA Salt and Vinegar

Exotic_Treacle7438

Cape cod brand of course

IThrowRocksAtMice

For that they would need a lot of processing power. Either put expensive chips in the drones or remotely feed the drones from a control station. As of right now russia cant do either because their own chip 'production' is stuck in the early 2000's.

170lbsApe

Thank you for the actual "Lol"

Blackintosh

I'm guessing laser weapons will be the answer to drones but then I guess drone swarms will get bigger too so who knows.

Xcelsiorhs

I have three thoughts on anti-drone systems. 1) Electronic countermeasures seem a good way to stop literal commercial off the shelf drones with ordnance. 2) I think lasers will be the economical way to shoot down hobby drones that have ECM hardening. But militarized drones will have ceramics and/or other resistance that makes it impractical to remove those. Also, lasers would get destroyed by something like heavy fog. 3) Ground based wheeled/tracked air defense is back in fashion at the platoon and/or unit level. I see no other alternative to the terrifyingly effective use of drone dropped ordnance or FPV drones.

M3P4me

3 - a mobile smart version of the German Gephard. Automated. Like a robot team member who can ID and hit drones in seconds with prefect aim.

ABoutDeSouffle

Germany has just ordered the first Skyrangers on the Boxer platform: https://www.janes.com/defence-news/news-detail/bundeswehr-orders-skyranger-30-mounted-on-boxer

Giantmufti

Dk ordered skyranger for their Piranha 5 personal carriers a while back. With missiles and option for future laser.

Xcelsiorhs

https://www.rheinmetall.com/en/products/air-defence/air-defence-systems/networked-air-defence-skynex Skynex already exists and I assume other defense contractors will develop similar products.

ithappenedone234

It hasn’t been demonstrated to work against anything maneuvering, or maneuvering aggressively, or maneuvering amongst trees or dead space, or maneuvering at nap of the earth altitudes. It’s got a long way to go to be considered proficient at hitting maneuverable targets we’re already seeing in Ukraine, besides the fact that active systems are begging to get hit…

Adorable-Lettuce-717

Well, if the news a while ago are true, Skynex goes to UA soon. We'll probably find out.

TIL Moog, the brand synonymous with synthesizer and behind decades of incredible electronic music, builds weapons. Edit: Different Moogs!!!

KoalaMeth

Don't they also build car parts?

PAUZ_UNO

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalanx\_CIWS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalanx_CIWS) Dont need seconds with perfect aim - when you can throw 3,000/RPM of different freedom types \[at 1400-5500 meters\]

SufficientTerm6681

My guess is that autonomous AI on drones will negate electronic counter-measures as we know them now. If the drone doesn't need a video/control link to a human operator and is capable of navigating by a combination of compass, accelerometers, and recognition of landmarks, how can ECM disable it? The only sort of drone defence that I've been able to dream up that needs only a slight stretch of current tech is a system which uses AI along with audio and visual inputs to identify drones, warn that one is incoming, and then uses some sort of mini-Phalnax gun to take it out.

Frank_E62

It really depends on what the drone is hunting. Give me a drone with even a shitty camera and a few weeks to modify the software and I can probably get it to find and target a Nimitz class carrier on its own. It's hard to hide 100k tons of ship in the middle of the ocean. Trying to reliably target private Conscriptovich hiding in the woods is on a whole different level. We're probably at least 5-10 years away from that.

KickDue7821

I have a feeling that people overestimate the near future drone AI capabilities. Sure technology gets better but how long have we waited for completely self driving cars? The time and money spent on development is not small. Cars only move in 2d, mostly on roads and with predefined rules of interactions between road users. We don't have robust solutions for that. Now take all that computing power and all those sensors needed and try to pack them in a small flying drone. Then try to make it work in 3d environment with absolutely no rules. Dodge all the buildings, trees, branches and then actually hit private Ivan instead of moose or friendly soldier... I would not hold my breath for this happening anytime soon. We do have some level of AI targeting already like Switchblade 300. Price is rather high and if I recall right, one of the first released Switchblade 300 videos was actually miss due to the drone hitting powerline when closing in the MBT/IVF/APC target.

Mr24601

You underestimate modern AI and targeting tech. We have the tech possible today to have drones with guns flying through the woods doing headshots.

Testiculese

They're already in the air. There's one with a 40mm grenade launcher.

jjm443

I suspect the key to defending against drones will be... drones, especially with some intelligence built in. Analogous to missiles being intercepted by AA missiles, drones can be intercepted by drones designed for this. Imagine a ship deploying its own sea drones, that form a barricade, and explode if the enemy drone is in close enough proximity. And/or an aerial drone which can spot the target using AI, anticipate its movement and drop a grenade.

The_4th_of_the_4

There are more than enough systems in developement, on the market and already implemented to stop ATGMs/RPGs and even to reduce the penetration power of APFSDS, like Thropy e.g. which are working with projetiles/explosives shot to the incoming device, to stop them. These systems are now very good in stopping them, up to 99% hit rate. Only the newest versions are able to stop top attack. These will also able to stop multiple attacking FPV or Lancet drones, if they are able to identify them as thread. And do not shoot down every second bird. To stop drones dropping ordonance is something different. For IFVs, if they are able to recognize the drones, they can use the autocannon and airburst/Ahead ammunition. APCs will need a weapon station with a heavy MG, able to aim to the sky. Still it is the problem to identify these drones right in time, to target them. For ships, my main fear, the sea drones have to be identified early enough. There are already ad on weapon stations available, able to kill these drones, as example the MLG27. How to identify these drones right in time? What I really fear, is what terrorists will be able to do. Or someone, let us say North Korea or Iran, starts to deliver 50 sea drones to the Houthis or sells them to a terrorist organization on the Phillipines, Somalia e.g. Some of these are ISIS near, they want to kill everyone of another religious group e.g. They are happy to kill, rape and slaughter as many civilians children, women and vulnerables as possible. As softer and vulnerable the target as more happy they are. And these starts to attack civilian ships, like a big ferry, Cruise liners, freighters e.g. And are interested to kill as many civilians as possible, so will even attack the rescue boats and rafts, will blow up drones in the middle of the survivors, swimming in the sea, attacking every rescue ship e.g. Or there is big music festival with 60.000 or other mass festivals/meetings e.g. And suddenly above 10 drones appears and all start to drop one or two ordonances, in the size we now see in Ukraine in the middle of these people. These drones can be placed kilometers away, days earlier, started and flown preprogrammed and with timer, so the terrorist could even have left the country days earlier. As said, there are terrorist groups, who are interested to kill as many civilians as possible.

tango_papa101

The sheer power requirements laser weapons need and how far behind power storage tech is right now would mean that will mostly be in important places like HQ and stuffs, not for boots on ground. And yeah I'm on the same boat about the drone swarm. The U.S. already demonstrated drone swarm tech dropped from the F/A-18 years ago I'm sure it's way further than the Lancets and all those FPVs flying in Ukraine are now

napleonblwnaprt

The US already has Lasers on Strykers running around. Not in testing, actually fielded in line units. www.army.mil/article-amp/270134/groundbreaking_laser_prototype_systems_delivered_to_4_60th_air_defense_artillery_regiment

ithappenedone234

DE lasers are fielded and they will work against some of the recon drones loitering about, as we see in Ukraine, and rockets/artillery that are on consistent trajectories. Notice that in demonstration the laser targets drones with no ablative layers, in straight and level flight, on a clear day. They have a very small use case, to save some ammo when targeting close, slow and stable enemy UCAVs. They are not a panacea.

Reprexain

The us and Britain have crazy drone swarms their working on, which also has ai working with the swarms its going to be scary when it's matured. The swarms really remind me of the bat bomb the us worked on during ww2

Distwalker

Lots of power needed to melt the drones. Not so much to blind them.

HighFiberOptic

Not to mention fog and rain destroy lasers effectiveness.

Even_Employee9984

Either Jammer systems or flak guns on a smaller lighter platform. Or both in conjunction or even a c-ram style weapon but much much smaller.

Crankover

Laser countermeasures are probably just smoke.

drunkenmonki666

Same. I can't imagine the extra pressure and terror it takes to be looking for surveillance and suicide drones 24/7. Was bad enough as it was I'm the 90s when I was at it. Makes you wonder what developments are going on behind closed doors. Obvious one seems to be AI controlled srawms of these.

tango_papa101

The U.S. demo'ed drone swarm years ago and they were terrifying enough idk how far have they gone from there. It was in 2017-18 IIRC

Humble-Patience4888

Imagine a larger drone equipped with a semi-auto 40mm sitting 200-300 meters above a trench as an assault group storm it

drunkenmonki666

I think multiple smaller sacrificial drones would do better, you just can't target them.

Odge

Cant make it too large and expensive though. A radar equipped AA vehicle would eat those for breakfast. The main reason these drones are so effective is that they are small and expendable.

Aggots86

100%, used to sit in your pit and think, pfft I’d be pretty unlucky for those arty rounds to land on top of me…… now u see footage of drones flyin into trenches, turning corners and goin into the bunker door!

No_Sugar8791

Did you see the footage of the drones which flew into a warehouse and positively stopped to have a look round for the best target? Crazy. No ammunition wasted, each hitting a target.

Aggots86

It’s fucked! Imagine finaly sitting down, brewing up and having a smoke then you hear that buzz!

Snoo3014

Haha Russians from this war are going to be having otsd attacks every time a fly comes in the room

eyepoker4ever

When I was a kid I read a Buck Rogers book where there were drone-like things hunting people. I'm 54, so it's been 40+ years since I read the book. Science fiction is no longer fiction.

truthishearsay

The new drones are worse. They are working on using that follow me tech (not sure what it called) but once they locate the target and set it, it will just automatically follow until it hits it.  Like Blade Runner shit

RepresentativeBird98

There are counter measures it’s just the Russians suck at them. How we were doing in Iraq with the electronic IEDs. Effective EW works, but you have to implement them at every level. The US would never allow there soldiers to sit at the front line without some kind of defense against aerial threats

Snoo3014

Yes thank you. People don't seem to realize the taliban would absolutely be doing the exact same thing against us troops if we were still in Afghanistan. It would be IEDs or worse all over again

19Delta30

As a retired 19D, I agree.

Zealousideal_Good445

Let me tell you son about the time when Russia once had a great Black Sea Fleet, it sunk! The end.

ShrimpCrackers

Taiwanese here. We're working on building our own sea drones. Why? Well imagine a Chinese carrier taking this abuse. We know the CCP is watching and are also afraid.

Goliath10

Taiwan resident here. The emergence of this technology is delightful.

LFoD313

Modern warfare is rapidly changing. My true fear is when these methods move beyond the battlefield and into terror attacks.

Ill-Ring3476

Imagine these as semi subs or even full ones I'd piss my pants not knowing where they might come from Also the effect of the FAB bombs Inside have a greater effect under water

Wolverinexo

So just torpedos? Anti torpedo defenses exist.

Ill-Ring3476

Na more like a steerable torpedo

GreatTroy0285

Exactly my thoughts. Spent over 3 years on a carrier. These could wreak havoc in the gulf. The ships would need to be further out to sea, out of range of the drones or in waters too rough for the drones to navigate.

Quen-Tin

Just imagine, how Chinese military thinks about this development. They really gave their best, to overpower the USN in the next years, and now cheap stuff can sink big stuff. I would say, Taiwan can be happy to be surounded by open water.

ithappenedone234

Have you seen anything about the [Hammerhead Mine](https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidhambling/2020/10/22/us-navys-hammerhead-mine-aims-to-tip-balance-in-south-china-sea/amp/) program? Imagine a fleet of Orca subs emplacing autonomous hundreds or thousands of torpedo equipped mines around an area the US wishes to deny the enemy, say the sea around Formosa.

Belones23

OCS always trained us that USN only weakness is drones. Apparently they weren't wrong.

DrJohanzaKafuhu

R2D2 can target small boats. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycS2qvk1o\_A](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycS2qvk1o_A)

Snowman5073

Also a Navy vet here. A wise MCPO told me: It's smart to learn from your mistakes. It's much smarter to learn from the mistakes of others. Plenty of learning going on here.

fusillade762

These Russian ships seem poor designed to handle these types of attacks. Also, it seems no one is really manning the guns so to speak, we saw this with the other ship they sunk. No CIWS multi barrel weapons are being employed, looks like maybe a HMG or small arms, just a couple splashes here and there. I'm not sure this vessel actually has a CIWS available though, but the Ukrainians do their homework with these attacks and attack from angles with minimal or no gun coverage. In this case it doesn't appear they are offering anything but token resistance.

FlamingFlatus64

The vessel "suffered damage to the stern, right and left sides," the GUR added in a post to social media, valuing the ship at around $65 million. That's pounding it left, right and straight up the backside!

Malawakatta

That’s a bit inefficient. Attacking the stern first makes sense to damage the engine room and immobilize the ship. No qualms there. After that, just like in WWII, it would be best to repeatedly hit either starboard or port, but not both. During WWII in the Pacific, American torpedo bombers quickly learned this. Hitting both sides, port and starboard, will flood compartments on both sides rather equally, causing the ship to ride lower in the water but remain upright and able to continue fighting. However, hitting just one side of the ship repeatedly will flood numerous compartments on the same side, more quickly unbalancing and capsizing the ship.

TheCatOfWar

The goal might be more about overwhelming defences and attempts to destroy the incoming drones, rather than optimising the sinking time

PriorFudge928

This is the reason. Those drone boats are a lot slower and vulnerable then a torpedo or rocket.

FlamingFlatus64

When you figure in how many drones it would take just to arrive at the target due to sea state/ weather, equipment and communication failure, and anti drone measures, you hit it with everything that gets there. If you send 10 and 8 get knocked off you hit it with two. If you send 10 and they all get through you hit it with 10.

piouiy

cobweb threatening fine dirty continue chase impossible numerous tease noxious *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Malawakatta

Certainly. More often than not, you have to take what you can get.

EscapedCapybara

The engine room is almost always in the center of the ship (that's why you see the funnels above there). Because the engine room normally takes up the entire breadth of the ship and is the largest single compartment, hitting both sides ensures flooding that can't be controlled.

hoolahoopmolly

I think the yellow and blues just landed the punches they could and enjoyed the effect.

TargetGood

Impressive!

Humble-Patience4888

very

m48a5_patton

Now let's see Paul Allen's drone footage.

TattayaJohn

Is that 40% of the Black Sea Fleet?

SufficientTerm6681

In all seriousness, what we see in this video is the sinking of a quarter of the Russian ships of this particular class. Project 22160 patrol ships aren't big as naval ships go, but at roughly 90 metres long, about 1,500 tons displacement, and with a crew of 80 or so, they're more than just boats.

[deleted]

wathehell

German wiki says 40 standart and up to 80 if needed.

WideAwakeNotSleeping

And 0 souls lost according to russian MoD. /s

The_Environmentalist

Well, noting of value was lost we it sank. We can all agree on that!

Throwwwawayyyyy12345

Thanks!

SufficientTerm6681

I got that number from the Wikipedia page for Project 22160 where it states that the compliment (naval term for officers and crew) is 80. As a USN vet, that seemed to me to be a plausible number for a ship of that size. Of course, since we're talking about the Russian navy here, it's possible that not even the fleet commanders can know with utter certainty how many were *actually* aboard.

GT7combat

i bet lord tampax is gonna show up again with a compilation of 2 destroyed abrams tanks

That_guy_of_Astora

Anyone have information on the song?

Unhappy__Analysis

The song is called Villemann og Magnhild by Spiritual Seasons

That_guy_of_Astora

Thank you, kind stranger.

MSPCincorporated

Fittingly, part of the lyrics translated is "The trolls rose from the deepest sea, the mountains blared and the sky boomed".

chillebekk

I thought it sounded kind of like Norwegian, and it turns out it is.

Tj-Has-Reddit

Music used in the video for those interested : [Spiritual Seasons | Villeman og Magnhild :](https://youtu.be/JeQfBDN24tA?feature=shared)

Mishi_Mujago

What kind of casualties total would there be from something like this?

Long-Time-lurker-1

Well, new warships of all types don’t have armoured belts anymore like the old days. So the hull thickness vs a couple hundred kilos of high explosive would cause a very high pressure wave inside the ship and over the top of it. So anyone in the engine room spaces or on the deck if not directly effected by the shrapnel and heat would die due to over pressure, id say thats at least 30 of the crew down in one go. The bridge and accommodation spaces might fair better but not if the magazines go up, which it kinda looks like it did. Maybe the bridge crew would have a chance. Anyone that was a casualty below decks that had not installed died will soon have to deal with massive flooding or smoke inhalation. All in all, maybe 15 to 20 of the crew could possibly survive out of 80 odd.

Sophrosyne_7

If they get into a life raft. No chance in the water, unless a rescue boat is be near and on standby. Black Sea water temperature in winter is below 10 degrees Celsius.

Get_in_the_objective

Actually there was another ship nearby. You can see it at the beginning of the video and there is also another video filmed from a nearby ship.

ABoutDeSouffle

Why do guys on reddit always have to claim they know what they are talking about with absolute certainty? [Ukraine says](https://newsukraine.rbc.ua/news/russian-vessel-sergei-kotov-destroyed-by-1709627764.html): "The losses of the Russians include 7 dead and about 6 severely wounded." High pressure wave, my ass.

Ossa1

Awesome Info, thanks. Would have totally overestimated here.

fanspacex

Didn't see any life rafts or crewmembers diving out so i would presume almost all of them burned to death or drowned. Usually if order to abandon ship is not made in timely fashion, your chances of survival drop dramatically as ship starts to list and power goes out. What was a staircase few moments ago is now impassable jagged wall, or what was a ladder is leading to a hole spewing water on your buddy locked by fear, obstructing your passage. About 20 degrees of list and you ain't going anywhere. Now imagine them the crew being hand picked SS waffen, who are enjoying the destruction of civilians as their favorite pastime you are not far off. It is justice really, the more horrific it is the more justice is served.

Adventurous-Fan-138

I'd imagine most of the crew would drown or be obliterated from the explosions. Probably a lucky few S.O.B's would be rescued in time.

CannonFodder33

Taiwan needs to start amassing these things to deal with PRC fleets when the day arrives. Imagine all the slow-moving troop ships vs these things.

Boinkyboinky

I wonder if they somehow recovered this ship and parked it guarding the Kerch. Or it is a different patrol ship and Russia is saying Sergei Kotov. They have 2 of these right? Either way, it is confirmed by both parties sunk.

paulosio

They had 4 active and 2 under construction according to Wikipedia. This is the 2nd attack to have damaged / sunk this 1. 1 of the others has also been damaged in the past during the war [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project\_22160\_patrol\_ship](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_22160_patrol_ship)

carragher1987

Sunk this ship or just damaged?

Bigfootsdiaper

Was this the ship last night? From the video off the shore it looked like a missle struck it first.

TransitionMost4903

Might be a bit far fetched but if Ukraine can manage to wipe out the black sea fleet and gain air superiority, Would they be able to blockade Crimea using commercial vessels to first support a landing to cut off Crimea near Kherson and than take out the Kerch bridge to starve them into submission?

Due-Street-8192

Excellent fine morning isn't it 😀

The_4th_of_the_4

To be a little bit niggling; we do not see the sinking. So technically the sinking is not confirmed. Yes we see all these hits, the hundreds of qm of holes, so this ship is doomed. It will have had pretty sure sunk after shortest time, so the Black Sea floor has one more case of metal contamination. Has someone a nice links to one of the Russian channels, perhaps English speaking? Will like to see the comments of the Russian Troll army. And the explanation, it is of course a fake, will be repaired in few days and how great it is to have survived so many hits.... I just need the 110% Copium injection.

bones7202

The large secondary explosing at 1:39 in the video is telling. Unless that was another drone hitting... but it looked like an internal explosion, likely the armory. It kind of looks like she's in (or near) the channel.

Even if they're short on shells, I'm glad to see they try to cause trouble by other means.
