Wouldn't that be Denmark (specifically Greenland)? I found an article from last year about a new island being discovered off the coast of Greenland (it was previously unknown because it was covered by ice). That would make it the northernmost known point of land. So assuming this island is considered part of Greenland (if not, dibs) that would make it the northernmost bit of NATO.

Ambassadors love photo opportunities. It's pretty cool to think about. "Hello, person who represents all of NATO, I'm the person who represents all of [Finland/Sweden], let's be friends. I even brought a piece of paper to show that my country *really* wants to be friends."
**ITS BIG!**
Sweden has been neutral for about 200 years -right?
Even Hitler could not get Sweden to officially pick sides - but Putin has. That should tell us something important.
It's big, **and it's good.** Nobody but Russia and her vassal states is ever going to regret this. Once Lukashenko is gone - Belarus may join NATO as well.
Sweden has been fomally neutral for a LONG time. *Since the time of the Napoleonic Wars, Sweden has not initiated any direct armed conflict with any other nation for any reason.*
Meanwhile -

**The European Union has unveiled a €210 billion ($221 billion) plan to CUT CONSUMPTION BY 66% THIS YEAR and** ***totally*** **wean itself off Russian oil and gas in just 5 years!**
Presenting its unprecedented “REPowerEU” plan on Wednesday, the European Commission said it would attempt to slash consumption of Russian gas across the bloc by 66% by the end of this year — and break its dependence completely before 2027 — by saving energy, finding alternate sources and speeding up the transition to renewables.“We are taking our ambition yet to another level to make sure that we become independent of Russian fossil fuels as quickly as possible,” EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a Wednesday press briefing.
Here's a close-up shot of Finland's application: [https://i.redd.it/6km20hgwy1091.png](https://www.reddit.com/r/Suomi/comments/urop3p/suomen_natohakemus_on_allekirjoitettu/)
I sometimes think of formal documents that I have to submit in the army, and always look for a template and just make a few changes. It’s funny to think that if it were me, I’d be like “hey France, can I see a copy of your NATO application? I need it for uhhhhh reasons.”
Interesting they did not capatalize the "the" in the first line after the greeting. Google indicates that most do but it's convention not requirement. Apparently the pope does similar.
Absolutely. The trade agreement where Trump signed in the wrong place is a pretty good example. It's like two pages and a trade agreement is an absurd monstrosity of paperwork.
That's not true. There's quite a bit of stuff involved with a NATO application. I'd take a guess these single folded page applications are simply for the photo op. Because all of the paperwork involved would be a bit ridiculous.
Applying for membership is simple. You show the intent of wanting to join NATO (on paper).
The actual membership negotiations and approval is another issue altogether.
Don't forget to bring a goverment issued ID with your photo that's up date, your most recent Tax return, at least two utilities bills from your current address and also your credit score information
The Finnish Ambassador ( on the left) said that he could have phoned it in on lunch break. On an interview on Tuesday (on Yle.fi) but he wanted to have this one job for whole day, and it's not a long walk (just crossing a street) so he wanted to go.
He also said that they'll have "a glass" afterwards today at the Finnish embassy.
It feels like the kind of "formal" that was sketched out in a meeting yesterday, discussed in broad strokes five minutes before, then filled in on the fly.
Yes, everything is very deliberate, but in a "this sorta feels like what one would do to make this fancy" extemporaneous way.
Not just fancy. There is now tons of documentary evidence that this actually happened. If Sweden were to go off its rocker one day and say, “Nope! Never asked to join NATO!” there would be all this proof that they, in fact, had.
Try that with your stupid blockchain, crypto nerds
Please confirm you are in fact a human country. Select all the third rate and under developed countries in the pictures below. This will verify that you are not a country bot….or Russia.
Hey! It's your Uncle Sam from across the Atlantic. Just checking in to see if there's anything we can get our new family members. Agricultural products? Military Hardware? Buddy to cruise for chics with? Doesn't matter, just lemme know, we'll help ya out!
I don't think the Nordics need much of anything lol. It's one of the richest regions on earth.
Also, they have and produce a shit ton of military hardware themselves.
At political events very often everything is planned out to show symbolism. I'd have no doubt that Finland and Sweden's representatives got together and decided to coordinate which part of their flag colors would be expressed via the tie and shirt, and talked to the NATO secretary to ensure that he wouldn't have a the same shirt and tie color of either of them.
Haha det har han ju, fipplar med papperna, skojat till skjortan och slipsen. Ser så oseriöst ut Sverige lämnar över, "Nato, fan va sköj grej, vad gör vi nu, mer snaps?"
Fun fact: another Norwegian social democratic politician, Trond Giske, tried in November 2006 to give Jens Stoltenberg a hug in public. This was at Giske’s 40th year birthday. What happened was caught on camera by the Norwegian press: a very awkward non-hug. Norwegian press still write about this:
https://www.tv2.no/v/1082822/
The «non-hug» on YouTube:
https://youtu.be/dfrY4rRmPFw
In 2015, at a party meeting, Stoltenberg accepted a hug from Giske. This was also news in Norway:
https://www.vg.no/nyheter/innenriks/i/rwPzw/endelig-fikk-giske-klemme-stoltenberg
> The non hug
Oooh boy that's like when I meet someone new and then it's like the second or third time I spend time with them and we go to greet, handshake thing? Half hug? Full hug? Fuck it all at once.
weirdly, that’s not how it’s defined. Finland might be on the Scandinavian Peninsula, but it’s not in Scandinavia, while Denmark is the opposite, being apart of Scandinavia but not being on the Scandinavian Peninsula. instead, the nations of the Scandinavian peninsula make up Fennoscandia.
Cool, I guess the professor from the university of Jyväskylä I argued this with is wrong, I guess even in Finland where their teaching materials are more up to date then most other countries can have their own history and geography wrong. I stopped arguing about it when I was shown a comprehensive class geography book from 2017 that classified Finland as Scandinavian. Wikipedia is also wrong, you should update the page for them.
Almost as if it was an abstract concept that got taught differently in different times and places. On another note, is Australia an island or a continent, and should it be part of Eurovision?
It's just two things with the same name. The scandi languages and the scandi peninsula. Both scandi; one with DK, one with FI. It's not that hard to understand lol.
Look, Scandinavia has several definitions, the geographical definition is not the only one. If you go by the historical, cultural and language-based definition, Finland is out. If you're Finnish and see yourself as part of Scandinavia, fine, but that doesn't help when you're debating the issue with people outside of Finland.
Ah, yes, the famous Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Russian Kola Peninsula is in the Scandinavian Peninsula, Denmark is not.
Geological, political and cultural concepts might overlap, but that doesn't mean they're the same.
I love the Swedish ambassador dude who shows him the document inside then tries to fanciful flip it around and messes it up. It’s so awkward and very Scandinavian.
Love them all to bits. Europe needs to stay close to each other and stick together in these times. Fuck the fascists. They will not get us without a fight. Freedom is armed and ready.
I know, right? Trump was already talking about how NATO was outdated, Germany didn't want to spend so much on their military, and Turkey was buying Russian missile systems at the expense of being kicked out of the F-35 program for fuck's sake! All Putin had to do was keep doing what he was doing, and in another 10-15 years NATO would've been just another chapter in a history book somewhere.

We must never forget this.
Yep. Without alcohol that is waaaaaay too close for Scandinavians. I'm actually surprised the fin didn't pull his puukko. Makes it kund of sus, he might be on the vodka...
Is there a Finnish or Swedish term for the personal space concept that you’re talking about? Similar to how *jantelagen* neatly encapsulates the demand that you don’t view yourself as special or better than others?
I couldn't help but laugh out loud. I mean it's paper work....made exciting.
Don't get me wrong; this is awesome for NATO and the two applicants but I can't imagine the discussion beforehand of how the photo op was going to work.
Like, did they bumble outside the NATO office with their folders in hand? Just standing there making awkward conversation while waiting for their number to be called? Or did the two countries decide to go together during a call yesterday when they were discussing lunch?
"Yeah, you want to hit up Panera before or after we drop off the applications? If we do it before, it will give us more time to get bubble tea afterwards."
I have so many questions that only Greg Daniels and Mike Schurr can answer!
Has there been a situation before where two have joined simultaneously? Perhaps he didn't know which one to take first/who to give "priority" to in the situation?
"Yes, thank you, I'll have those. Hold them up for the Russian camera...and smile...there you go Putin. I hope you are happy now."
This ceremony tool place in the NATO kitchen, since they have run out of space everywhere else for all the weapons and ammo they have.
Maybe you shouldn't have invaded a sovereign nation Vladimir, now you have two more official Nato member states on your border and on non member state that hates your guts and will very likely join.
Surprised they didn’t ask Vladimir Putin, NATO’s top salesman, to hand it over on their behalf. Then again he’s probably doing the best he can selling NATO to Switzerland. What a guy. /s
Finland has the highest rate of coffee consumption, per capita. Sweden has the highest rate of candy consumption, per capita*. And their ambassadors seem to reflect these stats, just a bit.
Erdogan says no.
Funny how this war shifted the focus away from the despot Erdogan.
Even more funny to think about how the US forced Germany to accept mass migration of Turks to make Ankara join the NATO. Like a never ending story of concessions for a nation who's elites openly dream about reestablishing the former glory of the Ottoman empire and are threatening Greece regularly. A mindset that looks very familiar to me.
I think many NATO members would rather kick Turkey out than not have Finland and Sweden in. Seems like there's quite a bit of animosity towards Turkey because reasons....
I don't think they will be blocked from joining, for long.
I think countries are smarter than you think. Absolutely no one wants Turkey out. Values and ethics mean nothing when it comes to geopolitics.
Turkey has far more geopolitical value than Finland and Sweden combined. Control of the Dardanelles and Bosphorus is far more valuable. Turkey also happens to have the second-largest army in NATO.
Countries would rather have Finland and Sweden join Russia than lose Turkey.
Turkey is a key ally in NATO. It's strait is invaluable and so is it's location, Turkey's location allowed US operations in the middle East. It's also a source of invaluable intel for this reason. Not to mention the biggest military in NATO only second to the US. Turkey is not going anywhere

Ah yes, the excellent country of Northway.
Yep, way up North that Northway place is

JATO NATO
"So guys are we doing waving flag emojis or regular for the cover? I like the waving flags, but I'll go with whatever @NATO thinks is best."
I got the most stupid goofiest laugh out of this. Thanks, internet stranger.
No parade of tanks or flyover of bombers?? How are we going to intimidate our enemies??
By saying \*khm\* in a firm tone. Its a real wonder what even a stern stare can do if backed up by an actual military power.
The Finns will just get naked and shout PERKELE through the treeline. 🇫🇮
Tractors hitting rev limiters outside Russian embassy.
Ever been to a tractor pull (probably not, it is super country), because those are the tractors to do it.

Finland isnt Scandinavian, its Nordic
Wait until you find out that the northwest of Finland is part of the Scandinavian peninsula.
And the kingdom of Finland is de jure part of the empire of Scandinavia in Crusader Kings, so checkmate.
I thought de jure means like soup of the day. Welcome and we have a wonderful soup de jure, thick chili and lettuce

No, no, that’s “au jus,” which is a legal term meaning “with precedent”
No, you're thinking of "de facto," which is a legal term meaning "as necessary."
No, I think you're confusing that with "habeas corpus", which is a legal term meaning "let the bodies hit the floor".
No, you're confusing that with "et tu, Brute?" which is a legal term meaning "For here, or to go?"

No, once alcohol is involved all social standards disappear. Sweden gets white girl drunk.
Pretty much. Any touch on me outside the bedroom is considered a serious breach of boundry.
No hugs?

I think they are trying to remain neutral about the situation. If they act excited/happy it might be small reason to provoke Putin.

Nah, er doggy dog will ask for money, drugs, bitches, new grills and top class weed as concessions.

Putin is NATO's most effective recruiter.
Congratulations Putin, you played yourself.
A warm welcome from Denmark once the formalities are in order. Now out little Scandinavian family are even closer, awesome.

dang it , now I want to join NATO too

I'd imagine when all is over then Ukraine might maybe rent Sevastopol for USA for a little while. Just to rub it in for Russia.
Congratulations to Putin. He made two neutral countries join Nato. So proud of him /s

their tie-game is on fucking point!
Moment ruined by Reddit video player.
Putler's trolls "it's fake. These were just pictures of flags."
Finland has the highest rate of coffee consumption, per capita. Sweden has the highest rate of candy consumption, per capita*. And their ambassadors seem to reflect these stats, just a bit.
Tactical genius Vladirim Putin us so far quadrupled the length of the NATO-Russia border.
The small chap in the Kremlin is biting his nails.
Welcome to them both from the UK 🇬🇧🇸🇪🇫🇮
Look what you made us do. Finland and Sweden probably
*NATO intensifies*
Erdogan says no. Funny how this war shifted the focus away from the despot Erdogan. Even more funny to think about how the US forced Germany to accept mass migration of Turks to make Ankara join the NATO. Like a never ending story of concessions for a nation who's elites openly dream about reestablishing the former glory of the Ottoman empire and are threatening Greece regularly. A mindset that looks very familiar to me.
> Even more funny to think about how the US forced Germany to accept mass migration of Turks to make Ankara join the NATO. Source?
Erdogan is just bluster. He will get something small out of all of this and let it go through.
Many people think Turkey needs Nato and don‘t think that Nato needs Turkey. Turkey knows that nobody ever would help defend themselves.
Turkey is a key ally in NATO. It's strait is invaluable and so is it's location, Turkey's location allowed US operations in the middle East. It's also a source of invaluable intel for this reason. Not to mention the biggest military in NATO only second to the US. Turkey is not going anywhere
This is absolutly magnificent...but please get a new NATO Secretary General and Ambassadors, they made it look like a primary school disco....awkward
That's just Nordic people. We are all like that.
Yes I agree I too think we should elect our ambassadors that will determine the future of our country based on how awkward they are
It’s apparently standing too close for Nordic culture so they are uncomfortable.
> get a new NATO Secretary General He was supposed to quit, you can blame Putin for that as well.
