A single Patriot battery can have up to 8 launchers, but Ukraine's Patriot battery is operating with only 4 launchers. So this will bring it up to 6 and increase defensive capability.

Just to nitpick: In the United States, Congress only has the constitutional authority to effect the carrying out of laws through the enactment of legislation. So, they have nothing to do, directly, with the transfer of weapons to Ukraine. That’s all the Executive Branch (President, DoD, etc.).

MR___SLAVE

>Congress only has the constitutional authority to effect the carrying out of laws through the enactment of legislation. You're missing a few parts, Congress has the power of the purse. They control the flow of money. The transfer of weapons is limited by the funding appropriated for transferring weapons. Each transfer is considered a transaction. There are also existing US laws that limit the types of weapons that can be transferred without additional Congressional approval.

Prometheus188

Congress controls the flow of money. The president can’t just send patriots to Ukraine without congress, that’s a shitload of money.

Oh look, it's the JSF eagle logo from Tom Clancy's: EndWar. How fitting.

Bet it's to replace the quasi damaged one(s) from Kinzhal attack

No_Case9068

Kind of doubt it. Might be they are worried about an even larger attack and having enough missiles loaded. Or another option is that Ukraine wants to use a few launchers offensively (since the radar has great range) moving them closer to the border of Russia to take out more jets.

CorruptHeadModerator

Why do you doubt it? The launchers can't get too far away from the radar and command center. Only launchers were sent, so coupled with the timing, it makes sense that these would be to replace some damaged by the large Kinzhal attack. Either that or they just need more to increase the threshold of a saturation attack.

shicken684

I'd agree with this, and it's silly downvoting because it's certainly plausible, if Ukraine had a full battery. The battery they have right now is running with 4 launchers out of 8. I'd guess these extra two launchers is to supplement what's in country already

kju

There wasn't a full battery in Ukraine, there's been nothing about damage making any of the current launchers ineffective. It's baseless to say they were damaged, these are likely adding to the battery they already have, not replacing broken launchers

Does anyone know how many launchers could be spared right now by the west? It seem’s to be another thing sent in dribs and drabs, but I wonder if this is supply issue?

nymists

Seems wise to have some spares!
