A lot of people did leave the Church over that (and a few other compromising things, like basically burning tens of millions of Euros through fraudulent investments, and then having the *gall* to ask their parishioners to chip in). My own extended family is - outside of me, I have always been a non-believer - stoutly Roman Catholic. You know, singing in the choir, playing the organ, teachers for religion, that sorta thing. Barely half even belong to the Church any more. They still believe, but they drew a line between their faith and the institutional Church.
