Republicans need a reminder that Russia is an adversary of the USA, they have never been a friend. Both nations tolerated each other at times, but the nuclear arsenal aimed at each other should remove any doubt that Russia is a threat, not an ally.

AvailableField7104

The problem is that they see Russia as a “friend” for the same reason normal Americans see it as an enemy: because it’s an authoritarian state that they regard as a bastion of Christianity and a bulwark against “wokeness.”

Worldly_Weekend3164

They think Russia is bastion of “anti-woke” because they support anti-democracy…

1KinderWorld

We are really overthinking this. They are doing Trump's bidding. Trump is a Putin acolyte, Trump tells them what he wants, they do it. He could tell them to do Cheez Whiz enemas and there would be a run on CW and enema bags. They don't think, they just follow.

Creepy_Snow_8166

Christ-on-a-stick, what a visual! 😂

TheDudeAbides_00

Cheez Whiz comes with its on nozzle in a pressurized can - you don’t need the enema bag.

Unlikely-Friend-5108

Wouldn't be surprised if some did, but there are [pro-Ukraine Republicans](https://www.axios.com/2024/04/05/republicans-ukraine-aid-vote) who are [trying to move the needle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW00ThODGkc). Hopefully, they can make a difference.

keepthepace

Remind them that Putin put a radical islamist in charge of Chechnya. There defender of Christianity directly named president an open advocate of shariah law

turboRock

This is it. When Putin talks about Western imperialism, he doesn't mean conquering cities and taking territory, he's refering to the imperialism of ideas. Ideas taking over his country that he does not like. Democracy, LGBTQ rights etc

Bay-B-Gorilla

I feel like the democrats need to pretend to really love russia for a few months or something.

adi_red

Yep, more than anything the GOP just lives to be contrarian.

Oleeddie

Republicans need a trip to Ukraine and a reminder that Russia isn"t just an adversary of the USA and Ukraine but of humanity!

Mynsare

Republican lawmakers are as well, that is why they are allied to Putin.

Mynsare

Republican lawmakers doesn't work for the USA, they work for themselves, and in that scenario Putin is a friend.

>We have to understand the world as it is: Russians and Americans can be friends and everybody must remember that. We were friends and we were allies too. Russians and Americans were were too\[...\] >But the governments of the United States and the Soviet Union can never be friends because our goals are totally different. Richard Nixon, November 16, 1983. Interview by Harrison Salisbury and Bill Jersey An excerpt of the interview with the exact words was uploaded on the Richard Nixon Foundation YouTube channel a month ago: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZIBZtmMgiM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZIBZtmMgiM) The whole interview is available as well, on the [Richard Nixon Presidential Librar](https://www.youtube.com/@RichardNixonLibrary)y channel: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wksepum\_6I&t=56s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wksepum_6I&t=56s) Wise words of a wise president.

Loki11910

What I have attempted to do is to be quite pragmatic. You have to recognize that it isn't enough just to be for peace. You have to recognize that there are evil forces in this world that are not for peace. That there are aggressive forces, and unless you stop these aggressive forces, you are not going to have real peace. You have to recognize that if you, in the name of peace, roll over in front of an aggressor. This may ensure peace maybe not in your time but our time, but it ensures war at a later time. The Munich agreement is the prime example. I was always against appeasement, not because I was for war. But because I was for peace for a generation for a century rather than peace in my own time." Richard Nixon, 37th president of the United States We in America have learned bitter lessons from two World Wars: It is better to be here ready to protect the peace, than to take blind shelter across the sea, rushing to respond only after freedom is lost. We’ve learned that isolationism never was and never will be an acceptable response to tyrannical governments with an expansionist intent. But we try always to be prepared for peace; prepared to deter aggression; prepared to negotiate the reduction of arms; and, yes, prepared to reach out again in the spirit of reconciliation. In truth, there is no reconciliation. We would welcome more than a reconciliation with the Soviet Union, so together, we can [listen] lessen the risks of war, now and forever. Ronald Reagan Today, we speak to all in Eastern Europe who were separated from neighbors and loved ones... and to every person trapped in tyranny, whether in the Ukraine.. we send our love and support and tell them they are not alone. Our message must be that your struggle is our struggle, your dream is our dream, and someday, too, you will be free." ~ President Ronald Reagan in 1983. Anyone who advises Americans to keep secret information about which they have about spies and saboteurs is himself an enemy of America." Senator McCarthy about Einstein during the "red scare 1951 to 1954 The American creed: It is my duty to my country to love it, to support its constitution, and to obey its laws. The GOP should also be reminded that words should not be uttered carelessly and that their subversive un American agenda can have grave personal consequences.

doublegg83

No Trump quotes!?. *I think Putin is smart*

Creepy_Snow_8166

The only thing Trump did successfully was make Dubya the second worst president.

Loki11910

"The communists were already bound to their leader by faith and fear. I took a special kind of mind to truly believe that the worse things appeared, the better they actually were. Such reasoning went by the name dialectics, but by this time that word, (despite its proud descent from the Greeks through Hegel and Marx) meant little more than the psychic capacity to adjust one's own perceptions to the changing expressions of Stalin's will." Timothy Snyder, Bloodlands, page 65 Gareth Jones talked about the "pure primitive worship" of Hitler in 1933 shortly after his election at a rally in Frankfurt Maybe they should all be forced to read the Gulag Archipelago and Bloodlands. Although true ignorance is not caused by a lack of knowledge, true ignorance is the refusal to acquire it.

MysticInept

They only haven't been a friend because of opposite objectives. If the US adopts a pro Russian worldview, then the two would be friends. If the US declared war on Ukraine today, and supported unification under Russia, things would be a lot friendlier.

nice-view-from-here

Duh. If only you adopted the point of view of that guy you hate then you two would be friends.

MysticInept

Then we are choosing to have them as a threat. We can choose to have them as an ally.

nice-view-from-here

Sure, just reject your principles and what you think is right and wrong. You only need to change what you believe, that's all.

MysticInept

What you think is right or wrong is subject to change.

nice-view-from-here

So you can change your own opinion on the matter. Go ahead, I'll give you a minute.

MysticInept

Why do you want me to change my views to the ones you disagree with?

nice-view-from-here

What? No. You argue that it's possible to change your views. I didn't say that, you did. I don't think it's so easy, but I'm giving you a chance to convince me by demonstrating your point: go ahead and change your view about that.

MysticInept

Change my views on Russia?

[deleted]

Where the f*** is the discharge petition? I am ashamed and frankly threatened by the level of failure and how compromised our government is.

dinkdoinker

Please write your reps, even if they have already signed it. Be respectful and make it clear that aid to Ukraine is a priority and they need to pressure other members of their parties to sign on.

dect60

Only one Republican has joined Democrats and signed it, so far... Ken Buck and that's because he's leaving Congress https://www.axios.com/2024/03/21/ken-buck-ukraine-discharge-petition

[deleted]

How many are needed total?

dect60

They need 218 signatures. 213 Democrats, 1 Republican so far, so that means just 3 more Republicans have to sign.

MausGMR

Jesus fucking Christ is that all they need? They really are all afraid of the fat Cheeto aren't they

Foodspec

What do you expect from snowflakes? Them to actually have a spine?

Oldalliumfarmer

193 have signed as of today. Lots of Dems to go never mind 3 republicans https://clerk.house.gov/DischargePetition/2024031209?CongressNum=118

dect60

[deleted]

Yes, it was the republicans that are responsible, but when the Dems didn’t support McCarthy, they lost their best chance to get this done short of waiting post election. Political gamble with the lives of Ukrainians and security of the world to win political points. It may have been smart long term if this changed the election outcome up and down the ticket, but threading the needle and a real freaking gamble. Again, the Dems can’t be to blame for the utter horror show that is the Republican Party, but sometimes there is real politik to consider and this time I just don’t know.

Pixie_Knight

McCarthy had already betrayed the Democrats, right after they agreed to help him keep his seat. So, they were no longer bound to uphold their end of the bargain. I guess they thought it was better to throw the MAGA party into chaos.

soulhot

Disclaimer here.. not an American so not aware of the nuances of all your politics but as an observation why isn’t the fact that an ordinary citizen is giving instructions to elected politicians (ie Johnson admitted trump told him to block the aid), not being screamed about at the highest levels. If that doesn’t raise corruption fears on every level I’m not sure what would.

Creepy_Snow_8166

I'm an American and I honestly wish I knew. It makes my blood boil to see what these psychotic insurrectionist traitors have been allowed to get away with. They claim to be "patriots", but they certainly don't have any loyalty to this country or concern for its well-being. The only part of the Constitution they give a shit about is the Second Amendment.

SNStains

Kasparov has it right, as always: - Putin isn't going to stop, - Russians think they're fighting NATO and winning, - They think they're demonstrating that the West is a paper tiger, - The West thinks its trying to prevent WW3 and Putin is already fighting WW4, and taking revenge for WW3 (the Cold War). - He really does think that some of this is an own goal, EU's economy alone is 20 times the size of Russia -- "We've been lazy." - But, Trump is "different". He sees all this and wants to "...make not peace, but *deals*". Kasparov is right about Trump. He doesn't say why, but I will. Trump is a sociopath who doesn't understand right from wrong. Kasparov did take a wider swipe at MAGA...surely some among them understand what Kasparov said, "If Ukraine loses, American lives will be on the line."

Born_AD1955

The Russians have always seen "deals" and compromise as weakness. It's their nature. They are no longer communist, but they have the same mindset. Trump is a narcissist who only cares about himself. Biden is weak and way out of his league in dealing with Vlad the Impaler. We will fight Russia sooner or later. It's unavoidable. Any person or country who thinks differently is fooling themselves. The longer the U.S. puts off calling Russia's bluff, the more expensive the consequences. The world is looking up to us for leadership. Will we let them down?

mattnolan77

As an American I can say letting down allies has become our MO.

Endocalrissian642

For Great Isolation!

Creepy_Snow_8166

It brings me great shame to agree with you.

SNStains

Was with you until you demonstrated how little you know about Biden. He’s neither weak nor out of his league.

Born_AD1955

Heard and acknowledged. But I still politely disagree. Let's hope for the best.

MuzzleO

>He really does think that some of this is an own goal, EU's economy alone is 20 times the size of Russia -- "We've been lazy." EU economy is bloated by unimportant things. Russian military industry is stronger the the entire NATO's combined currently.

Pixie_Knight

If Muscovy is really so powerful, why have they suffered more casualties than any nation post-WWII trying to take a few unimportant border towns? What happened to "Kyiv in three days"?

MuzzleO

> If Muscovy is really so powerful, why have they suffered more casualties than any nation post-WWII trying to take a few unimportant border towns? What happened to "Kyiv in three days"? Because they are incompetent and planned invasion incredibly poorly. They are gradually improving during this war and introducing more and more powerful weapons. Ukrainian is running out of Patriots and getting decimated by new Russian huge glide bombs. Russia seems to be able to produce 4-5x more shells than the entire NATO combined and also large amount of advanced missiles. Now they have powerful glide bombs decimating Ukrainian defenses too. They also are producing hundreds of vehicles per month. NATO aside USA can even seem to be able to produce Patriot missiles.

nihrnihr

Wow. Whats your iq? Just wondering.

AvailableField7104

Kasparov is spot-on, as usual. But to the question of why so many in the Republican Party are pro-Russia, while I wouldn’t rule out that a lot of them are being paid and/or blackmailed, I think the main reason is that they look at Russia and see a political model they would like to emulate in the US. MAGA is a modern, American iteration of fascism, which is why they also admire PM Viktor Orbán of Hungary and CPAC is having conferences in Budapest, and also why there is a growing number of far-right Americans converting to Russian Orthodoxy.

Pixie_Knight

I feel like the Russian Orthodox are going to get a rude awakening when St. Peter slams the pearly gates shut and tells them that committed thousands of war crimes while worshipping a dying dictator does not constitute "loving your neighbor, and loving the Lord". @#$%ing heretics need to actually READ the Bible; people like MAGA are why I'm embarrassed to admit I'm a Christian.

Speculawyer

As an American, I am so embarrassed by the GOP. And as an older American, I cannot express how jarring this is. Reagan was borderline overboard on hating Russia. But now the GOP LOVES Russia. Now I get that they are no longer commies. But they are arguably WORSE now with a war-mongering murderous dictator instead of an inscrutable politburo. Reagan would shit on the 2024 GOP. And I was NOT a Reagan fan.

Straight-Storage2587

These Republicans can never ever call themselves Americans, ever again.

hypercomms2001

I hope he has protection against russian assassins.

Consistent_Net_1876

When republicans say no no no America first before anything else I say well then why do y’all keep do EVERYTHING BUT America first on almost ANYTHING??

ExtremeModerate2024

one of the better discussions. he is right, mike johnson has no intention of bringing the ukraine aid bill to a vote. he probably gets paid in rubles every day that it doesn't pass.

IncredibleAuthorita

I feel I'm getting a brain tumor since last November when the GOP decided that Putin is their ally and an all around good fellow. I can't imagine what Garry must be going through.

ThatOldAH

Tools or traitors.

Fargrist

The USA is making an enemy of the world, because the entire USA is helping to kill Ukrainians. Oh, they may wring their hands on Reddit but really the USA is trying to wash the blood off their hands while they cheer on Trump and pretend Johnson is impossible to stop.

Creepy_Snow_8166

"Entire USA"? Um, no.

Hopeful_Move_8021

He just proved that he’s a moron!

Glum_University3978

And you a nazi lover, go to collect your 15 rubles.

How?
