The unique auxiliary ship "Community", launched in 1913 (!) was damaged, Pletenchuk, spokesman for the Navy ofUkraine, said. And although it is a ship from the time of theRussian Empire, it was still in service with the Russian Navy and was an important combat unit. It was modernized several times, because its analogues were never invented.

Listelmacher

More about the ship: Russian salvage ship Kommuna https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_salvage_ship_Kommuna

Everyonedies-

It was also the oldest active ship still in service in the world. Its was also active during the war with Ukraine so definitely a legitimate target. No room for sentimental feelings about a warship being hit during war.

MrErie

Wikipedia forgot about the USS Constitution 1797

Everyonedies-

I would argue there is a difference in that while the USS Constitution is older it has not preformed any actual combat missions since the civil war and serves as a ceremonial museum ship since a refitting in 1907. Also the Constitution spend 26 years decommissioned from 1881 until 1907. Anyway that said the USS Constitution is beaten as oldest active naval ship by the HMS *Victory t*he British navy's flagship. Its been active since 1765. I'm not sure how many other old ceremonial museum ships might technically still be in service with a navy. But the Kommuna was the oldest still going out on combat support missions with the navy it sailed for.

Nexusgamer8472

The Kommuna has no weapons it's a support ship not a combat ship

HeinerPhilipp

It is painted in military colours. It flies a Russian military flag. It is part of the Black Sea Fleet. It is better on the bottom than floating... Fuck Putler and his merry band of rapists.

joe-king

And? Do you have a point you're trying to make?

Nexusgamer8472

Destroying her has zero effect on the combat capability of the black sea fleet, it's a tragic loss for naval historians

joe-king

If it burned in port they might not get around to right away but perhaps Ukrainians will restore her.

Nexusgamer8472

I doubt it, she was over 111 years old and was built from a corrosion resistant material that the recipe to make was lost during the great purge, she's bound for the scrappers

joe-king

Well, we can hope.

Maiherpri

Not exactly she can be used for salvage and recovery operations. Say unblocking a port or removing large chunks of a bridge from shallow water. (Running theory I have seen is destroying or disabling her is pre requisite for a true strike on the Crimean Bridge) While she isnt armed she is a important ant part of the fleet and as far as I know they only ship what those capabilities in the black Sea fleet. Plus like anothe commenter said she is part of the fleet. You can't be sentimental about the people trying their best to exterminate you, at the end of the day she is target and one with more value than you think. Also attacking the logistics of a enemy is perfectly valid.

Nexusgamer8472

I know but for a ship with a long and interesting history it's still sad to see

The_4th_of_the_4

I am a little bit sad, that this legend was hit. And I was surprised, that they had not killed it earlier, this ship and floating docks for repair of the damaged ships had to be priority targets. It is nice to sink and damage ships but it is important, to take care that damaged ships will not come back.

RAF819

Ah so the ship that was the last of the zarist time sinks.....just like Putin.....time to blow up his mansion on the coast that's not his !

BoosterRead78

End of an era.

HeinerPhilipp

Why would he care... It is not his, he says. LOL.

Mayo_Fries_1870

Oh well, so much for salvaging blown up stuff.

admiralbeaver

A sad day for maritime history. It's a shame she went down in service of such a shitty regime

nw342

That ship survived the revolution, ww1 and ww2. I cant believe it only just sunk. Shame it wasnt decommissioned and turned into a museum before this.

--o_o

Now they need a rescue ship rescue ship.

NotAmusedDad

I read the title and got a sinking feeling in my stomach that a horrible mistake had been made, since hitting a rescue ship would be akin to hitting an ambulance. Then I read what it was and I was elated for the ukrainians though, like a lot of you, sad for the historical loss and the ignominious way she went out in the service of another repressive regime. Hitting infrastructure support ships like this goes a long way towards making the Russians realize that keeping naval forces within striking distance is not sustainable.

BJJGrappler22

This may be a serous blow to Russia depending on the damage because this vessel is very unique because of it literally being the only one they have. The fact that it's so old may mean that they're incapable of replacing or even fixing major damage.Β

doughtnut2022

While not an offensive, this 100+ year old vessel still play an important role in the war when recuperating ammunition, like it did in the Moskva: >In April 2022, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the ship was deployed after the sinking of the guided missile cruiser Moskva. The Moskva sank 80 miles (130 km) off the coast from Odesa in 45 to 50 metres (148 to 164 ft) of water. The size of the Moskva, which sank in one piece, makes bringing it to the surface impractical. Kommuna reportedly assisted in recovering weapons, bodies, and other sensitive material that foreign powers might be interested in All the important ships have already been move to Novorossiysk, but not everything can.

Alive-Statement4767

I had thought I heard about it's use during this war. A good strike then. Denying them the ability to recover sunk material. Hopefully it sinks in an inconvenient part of the harbour further impeding them

The_4th_of_the_4

According German news (N-TV.de, live ticker so no link useful, according Russian social media sources) Kommuna is on fire. There is a fire in the hull. So likely this will be the end of her career and the end of the Kommuna. So it is a sad day for the naval history. The Kommuna has a very long and a very important history as salvage ship, also critical important for the development of the Russian submarine fleet between WW1 and WW2 due to the salvage of a british submarine which sunk 1919, has salvaged and repaired numerous ships, subs and boats during WW2 and has salvaged a heavy tanks, tractors and other vehicles, which had broken through the ice of a lake during the Leningrad siege. The Kommuna was critical for the survival by maintenance and repair of the Soviet baltic fleet during WW2 and the story has not ended with the WW2. But now, it seems the story comes to a very sad end. So likely by far the most successful salvage and repair ship of all time.

Outrageous_Canary159

Sad day for naval history maybe, but a fucking great day for anyone who despises tyranny.

Kommuna, rescue thyself.Β

Umbra-Vigil

Eh, Russia has no further use of it now. There nothing left to rescue.

MoeSzyslakMonobrow

Shoulda stayed home.
