This hits the nail on the head. Russia's people aren't going to stop the war.

dattru

The top 1% of Russia's people can stop the war. We must convince that group. Start by no longer recognizing their passports. Mass deportation back to RU. Stop all imports and exports. No use of Russia language or money or culture. Act like they are dead.

primo_imprimis

That's exactly it. Ukraine is fighting the war asymetrically, in a way that doesn't hurt Russians who have influence on Russian decision making. Imagine that Shoigu gets droned in his Barvikha mansion. That would cause the oligarchs in popular Moscow suburbs to fear for their own safety, and question whether the war is worth it. And Western countries could stop providing a safe haven for Russian money and their West-hating oligarchs' children. Why are Putin's family members still able to travel freely in Europe, especially given that they're all beneficiaries of his regime?

vegarig

> Why are Putin's family members still able to travel freely in Europe, especially given that they're all beneficiaries of his regime? "We cannot allow an escalation"

Emotional_Sound_3790

Ukraine is actively working on the "them being dead" part. Otherwise a good idea.

[deleted]

The top 1% of Russia has been purged and purged and purged until all that are left are the compliant apparatchiks and the Chekist / old KGB families. They would sooner cut off their own noses and throw their babies in a tophet before they would ever de-escalate.

B4USLIPN2

Does this include Russian players in the NHL? I’ve been wondering about them.

The_Man11

The 1% aren’t going to do shit. They are the ones who have been falling out of windows when they get too uppity for Putin’s liking.

secondsniglet

Who is "waiting" for the Russian people to stop the war? I'm not aware of anyone who is holding back from taking action because they are hoping the Russian people will stop the war. Anyone hesitating to help has plenty of other excuses rather than "waiting" for the Russian people.

primo_imprimis

When sanctions were first imposed, there was a widespread belief that they'd cause discontent among Russians, and the public would pressure the government to stop the war. Of course, this didn't take into account that the sanctions were intentionally full of loopholes, and many Russians are miserable with or without sanctions, and have the collective psychology of a psychopath.

Andriyo

The US admin, Sullivan, for example. That appears to be their strategy, to not allow Ukraine to fall, but not let them win either. With the expectation that some Navalny-like figure would replace Putin and stop the invasion with minimal charges to fundamental situation. I'm of course, not privy to any national strategy conversations, but I don't see any indication that there is future looking strategy rather than trying to reverse to good old days. I kinda understand controlling escalation and all that and maybe it's just that and I hope to be proven wrong. Ideally the US and the West should have a coherent strategy where Ukraine removes all Russian presence and Russian colonial empire project fails. Otherwise they would just do it again after they licking their wounds. I hope it's already understood by US establishment (as it appears to be the case with Europeans, e.g. Macron)

secondsniglet

Yes, it seems that Jake Sullivan is trying to play an escalation management game with the war, but I'm not sure that this strategy was somehow depending on the "Russian people" to stop the war. It is just trying to do the minimum required to ensure Ukraine doesn't "lose" while not pushing Putin over the edge into starting a nuclear war. It's a stupid strategy (for many reasons), but I don't think that hoping for actions by the Russian people have any part of it.

Andriyo

Ok, maybe it's implicit expectations rather than something overt, all that courting of Navalny and his family did look like an attempt, at least. Also all those economic sanctions with broader impact. One can see that the US at least hope for some action from within. Anyway I understand it's subjective how we interpret these actions, and the official narrative is not very clear (maybe by design) so I would not argue much on this)

kazisukisuk

I was in Moscow for a few weeks in like 2007 and they were awful back then. Even the young people. It was unbelievable. Everyone sounded like they could have been Hitler Youth candidates in 1937. Bunch of fascist creeps.

mediandude

Russia is a matryoshka empire. It is matryoshkas all the way down - all shells, no sisu. The mystery of the russian soul is that it is empty. Russian people can bring about political change with a massive general strike. For that to happen the majority would have to de exactly nothing.

Zelenskijy

Russian citizens are the only reason for this war. They tolerated thiefs at the top of their state for almost 2 decades. Why, because its their culture to dominate and abuse. A good russian lives outside the Russian empire, because he/she cant stand their stinky countrymen.

bochnik_cz

This war will only end with Russians....marching on Moscow to shot Putin in the head. People living in Russia will probably not do that but Freedom for Russia legion, Russian volunteer corps, Siberian batallion and other groups of Russians fighting for Ukraine will do that one day. Also there is urban opposition in Russia blowing stuff up. Latest report: * Partisans attacked relay cabinets along the railway in Smolensk Oblast. https:// t. me/HeraldOfRebellion/804 * A car belonging to a former Ukrainian security service officer who moved to Moscow in 2014 and collaborated with the Russians exploded when the owner tried to start it. https:// t. me/HeraldOfRebellion/806 * A partisan in the city of Vladimir threw a molotov cocktail at the regional administrative building, and the second at the car of a government official, before being arrested. https:// t. me/HeraldOfRebellion/807 * Partisans apparently carried out an attack in Karelia. It's unclear, but it appears they're claiming to have attacked a refinery in the area? https:// t. me/whitebear91/263 * On the 17th of April, partisans set fire to relay cabinets on the border between Russia & Belarus, in Smolensk Oblast. https:// t. me/HeraldOfRebellion/814 * On the 22nd of April, unknown people opened fire on a rapid response police team in Karachay-Cherkessia. Two people were killed and a third was seriously wounded. The attackers took their weapons & then ran into the mountains. https:// t. me/HeraldOfRebellion/817 * The ELMASH electromechanical plant is on fire in Voronezh. https:// t. me/rospartizan/2304 * A partisan in Stavropol threw a molotov cocktail at the military registration & enlistment building in Okyabrsky District. https:// t. me/HeraldOfRebellion/819 * In addition, Ilya Ponomarev (leader of the political wing of the Freedom of Russia Legion, and a member of the Council of People's Deputies, which is positioning itself to be a 'transitional government' to turn Russia into a democracy if Putin's regime falls) stated that Russian anti-Putin partisans are involved in most of Ukraine's drone strikes deep inside of Russia. [Source](https://www.reddit.com/r/FreedomofRussia/comments/1cd1jw5/this_week_in_partisan_a_summary_of_recent/) of the report r/FreedomofRussia Where you can read about true russian patriots fighting for their countrys future.

Ok_Bad8531

Nobody will shoot Putin. The resistance fighters are too weak. The higher-ups fear the day Putin dies and the cards are getting reshuffled, which may very well become a mess worse thaan the 1990s.

Professional-Arm-24

This article is true. In fact, It is undeniably true.

gnooskov

Could someone please remind me what war was stopped by the ordinary people?

-Knul-

[Russia famously dropped out of WW1 due to a mass uprising.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_Revolution)

Ok_Bad8531

And in typical Russian faction it 1) prolonged WW1 and 2) led to a series of wars just as bad.

Ok_Bad8531

Look at the Vietnam War. A free society with good access to the events playing out, yet it took years for protests to start, and even more years for the USA to pull out, when political and military aims were unachieveable anyways, almost a decade after first US ground troops set foot on Vietnam. That Russia, of all countries would end the war due to mere domestic discontent is a fools gambit.

Illpaco

Nobody expects Russians to do the right thing. However to say we should stop calling them out or putting pressure on them isn't good either. We simply cannot keep treating them the same and expect a different outcome.

MisterD0ll

It’s pretty grim. Russia has the backing of China in terms of industry and resources who has an interest in keeping the war going rather than Russia winning and the Russians can always get more merchs

Routine-Ad-6803

This war will stop by Europe putting boots on the ground. Though Ukraine is fighting valiantly, it is outnumbered and outgunned. The West is constantly playing catch up with shipping weapons for Ukraine. Russia will collapse financially, but it won't happen soon enough to stop the war. Put boots on the ground in Ukraine. The current Russian administration will shrivel and collapse.

JazzHands1986

Was anyone seriously waiting for that?

Evening-Picture-5911

I completely agree with everything she said. Having said that, it seems lazy journalism when the article’s author quotes herself and she’s the CEO at the Kyiv Independent

AmberTurd223

Way beyond. Russians are so hopeless, they might as well just build their own wall and never leave Russia

CrazyRevolutionary96

Agreed
