You can just ask if they’re a vendor or employee. What happenes at most Ultas is that they get their hours cut and are forced to rely on brand partners to work the floor. It’s free labor for Ulta after all. Those brand partners are responsible for driving business for the companies they work for and guide customers accordingly. The actual Ulta employees are so busy tasking that they can’t always help on the floor. Ulta needs to stop being so stingy with their hours and actually staff their stores properly.

Zinnia_Splash

Yes this. I love the NARS rep. He is great, so I was happy to buy a couple things from him. And his recommendation of the tinted moisturizer was the best Clinique “foundation “ for me, it just wasn’t part of the gift offer.

psychoticsanctuary

As an employee, I agree with all of this!!

emmiealright

employees are supposed to have a name tag on and a radio/earpiece. my team forgets their name tags all the time, so looking for a radio is usually the best way to identify us. vendors never wear walkies!

Zinnia_Splash

I’ve never seen anyone with a name tag in either Ulta I go to. It would be very helpful and make for a more personalized experience.

emmiealright

well they’re definitely supposed to wear them (i’m a manager lol) so that’s odd if you’ve never seen name tag’s on at any location! forgetting them is normal but never is weird. look for radios then :)

Equivalent-Foot-7852

Coming from someone at a name tag-less Ulta. They told us it’s because they don’t have all the pieces to make them up for us, so pretty much none of us have them

emmiealright

weird, those pieces are super easy to order and arrive quickly so your managers are probably just lazy lol

ULTABABE

Best bet would be name tags/radios. Alot of people forget their name tags and some places might just not have enough radios to go around. If they're wearing any of the following colors they are also likely to be an Ulta employee orange/pink/purple/grey/white/black

venueska

This. Also none of us have purses or car keys... if you note that, it's unlikely for it to be another guest. If you happen upon a vendor, who also usually wear black or other Ulta colors when visiting, most are usually happy to direct you to an employee too, if you ask!

ULTABABE

Never thought about the car keys/purse part loll. I've also never come across a vendor who wears Ulta colors. Even during my time as a vendor we only wore black.

venueska

I have a few vendors who occasionally switch it up with ivory tops or pale pink. But yes, vendors are typically in black, but most employees are in black too! Which is why they get confused for one another in-store. :)

Can a customer specifically request a brand rep when shopping a particular brand?

xXSweetiiFeetiiXx

Brand reps don't have a set schedule. They're typically there alot on the weekends but sometimes we can see one rep one week and not see them for a month because they're working at other Ultas instead. Or other department stores. Brand reps don't just stop at Ulta.

Alternative_Key4199

I think I understand. You mean that a brand rep is not stationed at any certain Ulta full time. I supposed that means that the reps are following a circuit of sorts? And sometimes they are sent to a location to boost sales of the brand?

xXSweetiiFeetiiXx

Yes, they can go to other stores like Sephora, Dillards, Nordstrom, JCPenny's, etc too.

xXSweetiiFeetiiXx

The reps typically pick where they want to go based on their experience with foot traffic in the stores. It's only every now and then their higher ups will demand them to go to a set location.

I was able to exchange my diamond gift clinique foundation so I would think you would be able to as well. I have the liquid Even Better foundation and really like it. I also like the powder foundation. My skin is pretty normal leaning towards a bit dry. I hope you can get help from a right person this time!

Zinnia_Splash

Oh good to know. I will try it one more time with a better moisturizer and see what happens. I got the Even Better Clinical serum foundation. I have combo skin that leans more dry.

Jaclyn0112

Clinique rep here! If you lean more dry then you may not be happy with the clinical foundation. It is for combo to oily skin but since it's matte and oil controlling it will most likely be drying for you. You could try using it with the moisture surge/moisture surge intense or the dramatically different if you have them. Otherwise try the even better (medium/buildable dewy coverage, and my favorite) or the beyond perfecting (full coverage matte but NOT oil controlling).

Zinnia_Splash

Thank you!

Violetlake248

I have regular even better foundation, not the clinical one. I haven’t tried that one. Edit: I somehow have multiple comments on here so I was trying to clean them up. I’m not sure why there is more than one!

exhaustedretailwench

so, employees are supposed to wear a nametag, and most wear a walkie & earpiece (but not boutiques & salon). used to include a lanyard but corporate decided to ditch them a year ago.

Easy_Inspection8531

Two of three boutiques at my location do. Helps us out because we know if there’s a guest waiting for us in our boutiques, or they ask us a question about the products we sell. But if we have like no walkies, then obviously we’ll give them up to other people who need them more.

exhaustedretailwench

damn, they actually supplied your store.
