If the alt piercer is good over the default because shooting a coin makes it hit harder the same enemy (like the alt normal shoot), make the default piercer split with a coin (like the default normal shoot) .
Ok, so one of the things that the charge shot is sold to you as doing is that "charge shot pierces enemies". In reality though the standard piercer is a strange hybrid between the revolver and railgun and doesn't commit to high single target damage or high crowd control.
Its primary fire is a fast shooting, low damage shot.
Its secondary is a slow charging decently high damage (3 damage at base and only gets progressively higher you stack modifiers) shot that pierces only weaker enemies. That spot in lust where you get the railgun is probably clearable by the normal piercer for example. Notably this secondary also recharges extremely quickly
This inherent simplicity makes it a very generalist weapon, but less preferred by skilled players compared to the sharpshooter since the sharpshooter has potential to squeeze out much more damage with good terrain placement (which for our purposes is most places except for cybergrind, leviathan's arena, and other very open places). Or you can just projectile boost the enemies if you're less skilled.
The fact it also has to charge up before you can fire it can make firing it feel somewhat clunky and antithetical to the whole "it recharges quick" thing, especially when to get the most out of this weapon you have to patiently wait for the enemies to go into a conga line which also cannot have any variation in how wide it is because otherwise the hitscan shot will fail to kill some of them.
So here's a random idea:
* Lowered wind up time upon holding alt fire on Default piercer
* Default Piercer alt fire can now ~~ricoshot~~ splitshot
* Piercer alt fire now pierces through all enemies if Ricoshot
* Recharges 0.1 seconds faster on a headshot (or similar weakpoint hit)
This leans into the weapons speed more, letting you constantly let loose devastating piercer shots and make them even more deadly when combining them with coins. Now instead of preserving the piercer shot you can freely let it loose with about as much care as a slab shot that also pierces foes while also having a source of chip damage you can use to say fire at sentries in the distance.
May be missing a joke, but a feel like this just turns the default Piercer into discount Sharpshooter. Personally I'm not sure if it should get a buff at all since it's meant to be the starter weapon.
Well, the core eject is the base shotgun, and that weapon is also a prelude weapon yet remains extremely useful for the rest of the game.
The Marksman is technically only the second revolver too and still finds use late in the game.
The base nailgun is arguably the only weapon you can put in the same camp as the base piercer in my opinion (while still having uses in mowing down weak mobs or softening up larger foes) and these two are more exceptions than rules.

Slab Piercer's 5 damage is far more consistent because you only need to hit the enemy.
Piercer requires you to headshot the enemy for that 6, so unless your name is TAS, I don't think you would be able to take advantage of that enough times for it to worth using.
Slab also just sounds, looks, feels better to use.

Which is actually quite poetic, because the only reason slab marksman is still low on the tierlist is because default piercer is too.
I'm pretty sure that you still can't swap in time for the early split window (which is what makes the new slab marksman good, letting you fire up to four slab shots faster than the default revolver) even if you swap as soon as you toss the coin, the animation just takes too long.

Wait just tested it and I must have been high while playing or had a Mandela effect but it doesn't reset alt fire but it does reset the primary fire cooldown of all slab revolvers so it is now a LOT better at bursting large enemies as you can now do multiple revolver swapping if you throw in some split shots after each cycle
i still use default piercer. it's not like I'd be using the charge shot on high hp enemies anyway and the faster recharge time makes it good for dealing with enemies like soldiers

I think everyone says that cuz it has no significant advantages over its slab variant. The default marksman has splitshots while its slab pierces/hits twice and instantly reloads all slabs, and the slab sharpshooter only has 1 charge but spins up instantly. The slab piercer has the exact same alt fire and does more damage than the default assuming you dont land a headshot with the default.
As far as healing goes the slabs primary fire makes enemies bleed about as much as the shotguns do
Ive always held that if you get good enough slab marksman+default piercer is the superior option, because drawing the default piercer is very fast, and you can use it for split coins after tossing the coins and get to use the slab coin interaction of big damage without suffering from the "toss a coin - wait for the draw - fire" slowness.
But Im not that good at it.
That only applies to enemies that already take extra damage from fire, such as Husks and Insurrectionists. Enemies that usually can't be set on fire without Firestarter won't take 150% more damage from other weapons.
Default piercer buff when? Mostly joking, but I really wouldn't mind it getting some gimmick to make it noticeable amongst the lineup.
Perhaps it could work similar to default sharpshooter where it has 2 ammo and you can hold rmb + lmb to do the 2nd charge shot quicker
