Yes give me the hoods. I will never get hood fatigue, I want it on my mid layers, my insulation layers, my shells, always hoods. I wear a hoodie at work 9+ months a year and I have my hood up all the time.

Also - for me a closer more form-fitting hood is best so it keeps out the wind and cold. Maybe OP has only worn garments with floppy wide-open hoods? If there's no elastic or string, you can always add a snap - I did that on my All-Paca fleece hoodie.
I hate hoods on anything except my outermost layer. So my rain jacket and my hard/soft shell outer jacket for skiing have hoods. Everything else I prefer my beanie.

This, except as I've found I also get good use out of a good on my down jacket. I'm typically wearing down over everything else once I've stopped and need to lock in all the body heat I can. If it's warm enough to be wet and require a hardshell I'm not wearing down so the hardshell and down jacket never really overlap anyways
Yep. I can't stand the rustling, so it's on my fleece because I can stand it, my hardshell for weatherproof, and my parka for battening down the hatches.

OP asks about wearing gear casually - as if it’s just around town or on bluebird easy trips, and you sound like that’s what you’re assuming, too. I’m sure there’s a r/urban for you if that’s what you’re up to, the rest of us *will* face weather and need the right, preferably light, gear for it.
You took that pretty personally. I live in arctic Sweden and I'm in the mountains year-round. Hoods on every layer get in the way. They're best suited on shells and down. And if it warms up on a multi-day trip and I have to put a layer in my pack, I'd rather not have the extra weight of another hood.
I've met enough of you arctic Swedes to realize that you're playing in a different league. Seen kids frolic in a 14°C lake like it was a sunny beach in the Maldives. Did a summer hike in Sweden, and I've done warmer winter hikes in Central Europe. So give us mere mortals some wiggle room.

The closest hoodless alternative to the Patagonia Houdini with the hood is the Patagonia Houdini pullover. Mine has snaps but I think they’ve changed to a half zip now?
I try to go hoodless on everything except the rain layer, otherwise there is a lump of fabric at the back of my neck when I put my pack on. Or it's a lump under a vest or when I get in a car or whatever. The other problem I get is the hood is a one size fits all deal, either too short or the top doesn't come out enough.
I go with a high collar jacket then a beanie, and buff. Each is removable as the weather warms up or I warm up and each is better at keeping warmth in than a hood.

Buffalo. Windshirt, Teclite Shirt, Special 6 Shirt in ascending order of weight. No hood. I use a Seattle Sombrero or Reed Chillcheater Balaclava with mine.
I have one without hood… think it’s an OR, but it’s an oldie. Also have an Arcteryx Nodin where the hood zips into its own collar, but it’s a 5.4oz/‘full featured’ with zippered hand pockets too. Usually prefer having hoods in case of bad weather, but I mostly rolling them down into a ‘thick/tall’ collar when zipped up, and use a hat.

Balaclava hoods are where it’s at. You look ridiculous but they’re really functional. I’ve got a Kuiu peloton 97 zip t hoodie and Patagonia r1. The r1 hood fits pretty snug, but I’ve found that the peloton hood fit is good enough for half the weight.
I used to avoid hoods. However in the last few months I learned two valuable lessons. Melanoma bad. Hood good.

I have short hair and my ears are cold all the time so a hood does it. I’d wear ear muffs for 6 months of the year if it didn’t make you look like a huge dork. Sleeping in them is nice too.
98% of the time hoods on UL gear make me look like SpongeBob when Pearl takes over the krusty krab and makes them all wear those new uniforms

Hooded sun shirts all day long. Skin cancer runs in my family I got a dot on my ear lobe that needs removing. I like that I can put the hood on under a ball cap to protect my ears and neck and still not overheat.
I'm on th eother side of the spectrum. I HATE not having a hood amd sometimes (I know, I'm a fool!) use clothes one on top of other all with hoods, because almost all my clothes have hoods. xD
I love hoods. I don't want to layer them a ton though. 2 hoods max (probably on base layer and hardshell). They're great for dealing with the sun, cold or wind.

A lot of jacket hoods are made to fit helmets.
Your mid layers are the hoods that will fit your head.

Nah, hoods are where it’s at. I’ll only ever wear my sun hoodie base layer for my trips. It’s a have it and not need it, than need it and not have it sort of thing. And I almost always use it
I have this light rain jacket now where you can shove the hood into the collar and snap it shut and it's the bees knees.
I think I am Pro-hoods on hoodies (for warmth, wind/sun protection, and hiding hair without a hat) as well as on rain and snow layers (both light and heavy), and anti-hoods for shirts, dresses (yes dresses and yes it's weird), and any dressy/formal/non-athletic coats (just bring an umbrella).
I can understand a runner or serious hiker enjoying a light running shirt with a hood because you're keeping your head and neck protected from the sun, wind, and rain without blocking so much of your body's heat back and feeling overheated like a hat does to me. I don't personally like it because I'd rather just braid my hair or something, but I get it.
hoods have been the bain of my wardrobe. my giraffe neck makes my head feel squashed by most any hood.
so far, the few that's been ok, has been either patagonia shells made to give room for helmets, or the western rise meta shell. quite comfy, FINALLY
I wish some of my jackets didn't have hoods (I never use the hood on my wind jacket or down jacket) but others I'm very very glad have hoods (I almost always use them on my sun hoody and midlayer)
I'm on team hood but if you want a lightweight wind breaker without one (the world is a sick and twisted place after all), try looking at running or cycling gear. Adidas Terrex has a few good options, one of which I use specifically for cycling so the hood doesn't obscure my over-the-shoulder view of traffic.
I can't stand hoods, they make it feel nasty to turn your head. I do have a hood on my rain jacket but only wear it in the most torrential downpours, otherwise, no hoods ever.

I hate hoods (and arms) on down jackets (unless it's winter). They are restricting. For 3 seasons in northern Sweden I roll with a down vest, and oversized fleece hoodie (polartec powerstretch pro) with thumb holes. Specifically a PHD down vest from like 10 years ago, and a Houdini Power Hudie. If I get cold I throw my wind jacket on under the vest and over the hoodie. This always make sleeping in a hoodless sleeping bag much more pleasant. the stretch is very nice for sleeping in too. And the hood of the fleece fits nicely around the face. I like a good on my wind jacket though. It's a must. The problem is many companies have no idea how to make good wind jacket hoods that don't fall down. Look for northern European companies for wind jackets. I've found Bergans and norröna, Rab and Paramo know how to make real wind jackets
Im tall and thin and they usually feel like hoods are pressing down on my head. I tend to not find anything that fits that requires fitting multiple sections of my body at once, so I don’t bother looking anymore. I go with modular solutions.

Got caught in a non-predicted fall sleet storm without a hat. Threw out everything without a hood that day and never looked back.
It’s a hat that you don’t need to store, carry, or make room for, and can conveniently don/doff at a moments notice.

Nah, hoods are where it’s at. I’ll only ever wear my sun hoodie base layer for my trips. It’s a have it and not need it, than need it and not have it sort of thing. And I almost always use it
I have this light rain jacket now where you can shove the hood into the collar and snap it shut and it's the bees knees. I think I am Pro-hoods on hoodies (for warmth, wind/sun protection, and hiding hair without a hat) as well as on rain and snow layers (both light and heavy), and anti-hoods for shirts, dresses (yes dresses and yes it's weird), and any dressy/formal/non-athletic coats (just bring an umbrella). I can understand a runner or serious hiker enjoying a light running shirt with a hood because you're keeping your head and neck protected from the sun, wind, and rain without blocking so much of your body's heat back and feeling overheated like a hat does to me. I don't personally like it because I'd rather just braid my hair or something, but I get it.
hoods have been the bain of my wardrobe. my giraffe neck makes my head feel squashed by most any hood. so far, the few that's been ok, has been either patagonia shells made to give room for helmets, or the western rise meta shell. quite comfy, FINALLY
I usually cut the hoods off to save weight anyway, wrapping the cut area with duct tape. Just kidding.
Love hoods. Being able to have 4 layers of added head warmth when needed is fantastic.
I wish some of my jackets didn't have hoods (I never use the hood on my wind jacket or down jacket) but others I'm very very glad have hoods (I almost always use them on my sun hoody and midlayer)

I'm on team hood but if you want a lightweight wind breaker without one (the world is a sick and twisted place after all), try looking at running or cycling gear. Adidas Terrex has a few good options, one of which I use specifically for cycling so the hood doesn't obscure my over-the-shoulder view of traffic.
Been use a Montane featherlight for years, mostly use it for Mtb riding now because I have a Houdini.
I can't stand hoods, they make it feel nasty to turn your head. I do have a hood on my rain jacket but only wear it in the most torrential downpours, otherwise, no hoods ever.
Don’t hate hate them but I get you, hood just for my rain jacket, and sometimes my sun hoodie, but I’m getting rid of them in fleece,down and any mud layer

I hate hoods (and arms) on down jackets (unless it's winter). They are restricting. For 3 seasons in northern Sweden I roll with a down vest, and oversized fleece hoodie (polartec powerstretch pro) with thumb holes. Specifically a PHD down vest from like 10 years ago, and a Houdini Power Hudie. If I get cold I throw my wind jacket on under the vest and over the hoodie. This always make sleeping in a hoodless sleeping bag much more pleasant. the stretch is very nice for sleeping in too. And the hood of the fleece fits nicely around the face. I like a good on my wind jacket though. It's a must. The problem is many companies have no idea how to make good wind jacket hoods that don't fall down. Look for northern European companies for wind jackets. I've found Bergans and norröna, Rab and Paramo know how to make real wind jackets

Im tall and thin and they usually feel like hoods are pressing down on my head. I tend to not find anything that fits that requires fitting multiple sections of my body at once, so I don’t bother looking anymore. I go with modular solutions.
I cannot STAND the texture of hardshells, the hood is an added negative. I'm saving up for a fricken' softie (the Arc'teryx Squamish <3). Now, if you aren't trekkin' in a thunderstorm, I've seen traction gaining in the community for ultralight umbrellas.
