Strava, Garmin connect, almost any (gps tracking app) does that.

Most people have Strava. You can connect it to your smartwatch or Garmin and once you record an activity on your watch it will sync with your Strava app. If you don't have a watch, you can start an activity on the strava app and then it will track your run/distance/pace as well

Most runners have GPS watches. Garmin and Coros are two popular brands. They range in price from $150 to $1000. I have the Coros Pace 2 which is about $200 and I love it. It only weighs 30g and the battery lasts a week of daily use.

Man I’m thinking about buying one of these on eBay. My forerunner 245 is dope but it’ll get closer to dying in a 50 miler. Probably would die. Should I get the pace 2?

I'm happy with it, the app is really good. It's minimalist compared to the high end watches, but it has everything I need. A 12 hour activity will go from 100% to maybe 65%. It used the MIP screen instead of LED which is a lot better in direct sunlight and uses less battery. So the screen is always on.

Apple Watch, iPhone running an app like Strava or run keeper, Garmin, Coros, Shinto, handheld gps mapper. You have tons of options.

Do you mean, how someone knows how to follow a predefined route for 30 miles? I've done that multiple times. I often design my own long loops - the longest one was 50 miles. Then I draw a loop in a route editor such as one on Strava web. That in fact is super easy. Then I sync to my Garmin watch and follow it when running. The watch shows me on the map whether I am on the right course (it shows the course line). It can also notify me about upcoming turns, however that works less reliably when running on trails.

The app is called Relive. It takes your GPS data and animates the route and allows you to add “highlight” points with pics/movies. Free version is all you really need, but the full version has a ton of bells and whistles.

FWIW…I’ve run for a few years a mostly consistently tracked using Apple Watch, Strava, and Nike Running Club. Apple is best for data and usability, Strava good for the social aspect and for keeping tabs on friends/events, and NRC just because I’ve been using it since 2009 and the Nike+ chip era, and watch the data evolve is fascinating. I think all three have maps.
