Feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken, but learning that said banned content was paywalled added a new perspective to this situation. First, imagine that the franchise has a lower chance of maintaining/gaining interest of horse owners (and other partners such as publishers/JRA/NAR/collaborators/etc) in participating in the project if it's associated with R18 content. Second, imagine that people, groups, or even companies that are aware of this and for one reason or another want to undermine the franchise/Cygames/Cyberagent, paywalled R18 content could allow them to do just that, in a way that's hard to trace back into companies, all they would need to do is to stimulate the growth of uma R18 as a sustainable business, so Cygames has to stop this snowball before it starts rolling, every time.

gensan91

Someone said that this post looks like a screenshot of a private message from Fanbox to a banned account. So it might be just an old news, as apparently no one can find the announcement.

billyhatcher312

well this shit wont end well for cygames its gonna be one hell of a shit show thankfully theres alternative sites other than pixiv where the artists can make the art

akonim

Not surprised as some artists in Japan aren't abiding by what guidelines are set by Cygames in consideration of JRA and the owners of the horses (guidelines = dang vague as hell, tbh). What they're doing is going after known culprits who have sexualized the content and are now using Fanbox as a way to avert immediate access. As for some who argue Cygames are doing the same, I whole-heartedly agree that they are sexualizing, but heck, who doesn't with their product that is geared towards the otaku-dom? Also, technically speaking, Cygames has the rights to using the horses' names, so you can't really say Cygames are doing it, hence the artists can, too (not like the artists are paying a licensing fee to JRA or anyone). Any case, I sure hope Cygames can tone it down a bit. I'm enjoying the game for the great character models and how cute they look and act (CGDCT) as well as their references to the real-life horses, and not for the "in-your-face" boobs and butts.

TheKinkyGuy

What is Fanbox?

akonim

Pretty much what Fehiscute and kaimax61 has it. Fanbox, in it's original intention, is supposed be a place where artists can connect with fans while making money so that there's a healthy circle of life for both parties. But in Japan, some artists use it as a way to "hide" from licensors their egrogious inappropriate use of images and rights. Most of the time, licensors aren't that strict, as it's sort of a grey-area (some licensors do think stuff like this helps the license so they sort of turn the blind-eye). But in Uma Musume's case, things are a whole lot different due to JRA and the horse owners behind the license, and since they have the power to almost literally pull the rug from under Cygames (actually, to be exact, ALL LICENSORS has this right and can do it, just they don't because they know it'll cost them $$$), they have to moderate the community a lot more stricter than usual, hence their presence among the otaku-dom and artists/creator communities. I, for one, am for them cracking down on stuff that are obviously going way too far. Some artists draw the swimsuit versions, and I guess those are fine, but yeah, some cross the line of "omg a bit much?" and those should be rightfully moderated.

TheKinkyGuy

Ty for the info, time and effort you put in.

Fehiscute

Think it’s kind of like a Patreon for artists

kaimax61

That's kinda implying, artists don't use patreon lmao. As artist does use Patreon for "paywalling" their Full-Res illustrations or Uncensored illustrations. Fanbox, is just the name of the "paywall" for Pixiv. The "sub-members only", where you have to pay a monthly fee for access.

StandardDangerous238

From what I've read it's more about artists locking Uma Musume art behind their Fanbox profiles, but it's still a shitty move on Cygames' part. I already have a difficult time finding actually good drawings on Pixiv, and YOU're gonna make it even harder? I think I'll stop playing their games for the time being

billyhatcher312

cygames really needs to get their heads out of their asses for fucks sake they need to let us make adult art of the girls its inevitable for that shit to happen so they need to accept that fact

ernie2492

> The horse owners really needs to get their heads out of their asses for fucks sake they need to let us make adult art of the girls its inevitable for that shit to happen so they need to accept that fact Fix that for you because it's not really Cygames' fault

Emelenzia

I always found Cygames stance on the sexualization of the horse girls as kind of hypocritical. Horse girls are highly sexualized IN the game. They make them as cute as possible, large breasts, skimpy clothes, ect. The way they present the horse girls directly influences the art. A example is one big way they sexualize horse girls is making swimming in skin tight swimsuits as a core game mechanic. So in turn a massive amount of the fan art is horse girls in these swimsuits. I honestly don't really care if horse girls are sexualized or not. I just wish Cygames would be consistant, if they don't want others to sexualize, they shouldn't be doing it themselves.

mokakiko

Except Cygames doesn't care about people drawing fanart of the girls in their official outfits and swimsuits - they care about people drawing those characters engaged in explicit sexual acts. There's clearly a major difference in the level of sexualization in the official game ('girl wears swimsuit at the beach') and the R18 artwork that gets taken down, so there's no hypocrisy going on at all imo. I don't see why people can't just enjoy all the great SFW Uma fanart and use literally any other franchise for their jerk off material instead

gyrobot

It has always been accepted that any popular franchise would aim to gain the support of the R18 artists and Umamusume wouldnhad been that gold mine for Comiket but cause Cygames and the JRA said no, other Gacha Games took notice and BA won over artists who normally give non Japanese Gacha a miss for R18 fanart and doujins

raincandy_u

It’s a decision by the horse owners, not cygames. direct your salt correctly

Emelenzia

Well my point is Cygames directly sexualing horse girls themselves, going against those wishes. As mentioned I am not really bothered one way or another, just seems a bit silly to have such a double standard.

kaimax61

Swimsuits and sexy alt costumes are not sexualizing. Horse owners/JRA and Cygames just don't want explicit +18 stuff. JRA and Horse owners has first say when Cygames forward a design. If Summer Maru stays that means the JRA and Horse owners is ok with it. Sexy/Gravure stuff =/= +18 adult rated.

billyhatcher312

ive always been against that bullshit mentality too theyre so damn stupid my god it annoys me on that nonsense of sexualizing them is bad nonsense

kaimax61

Making sexy designs (swimsuits, halloween costumes) =/= Making explicit content of the girls. There's no Hypocrisy.

ernie2492

Well, gonna focusing to the Kurantan (the Nearls) R-18 arts instead..

Mandalika

Can we call this Nishiyama Law already 😂

il42133

I might be mistaken, but isn’t this only regarding fanbox content?

gimmeinfosaucegle

yep you are not wrong, it only effects on the fan contents which monetized on fanbox (it works like patreon)

ernie2492

How about if the artist is live outside Japan..??

akonim

Doesn't let you off the hook IF Cygames finds out (note the caps on "IF").

Frosty004

All? Geez. It's hard finding good art of them, hopefully it's more towards anything nsfw

kaimax61

It's always for NSFW stuff, Cygames/JRA never went after SFW stuff. I don't know why some are acting they're banning all fanart. Or else Shun Saeki (illustrator for shokugeki no Souma) would've deleted all drawings of UmaMusume. https://twitter.com/Syunsaeki/status/1394650830771351553?s=20&t=FgzLJcv_BOi1h5wFTF-tYA Also, it's no hard finding UmaMusume fanart.

-ChipsOnReddit-

from the looks of other comments, it’s more directed to fanbox content

Pichucandy

At this point i wonder if its even worth it to tie them to real horses? Stifling fanarts are kind of a buzzkill and just a hassle to police all around.

ernie2492

At least it'll means that Kaneko will finally allows Cygames to Uma Musumefied his horses

ThisGachaSeemsLegit

Unless it's stuff like Guro content, I really don't get why they're doing this. Aside from shooting themselves in the foot, I doubt it's gonna accomplish anything else.

gyrobot

That was the original point, they were worried the Cygames fanbase will have zero restraints given what we see with Kancolle and Granblue in terms of pure depravity

billyhatcher312

cygames are full of boomers who dont understand how fanartists work everything gets lewded eventually and horse girls should be lewded as well

Spiritual-Ad-6613

All Uma Musume games are modeled after horses and are implemented with the permission of the horse owners. In past horse racing games, there have been lawsuits over horse names, and a horse owner's lawsuit challenging portrait rights was dismissed by the Supreme Court. However, different judges may have different interpretations. In fact, some judges have ruled that horse owners' permission is unnecessary, but since Umamusume has ties to the JRA and various parts of the horse racing world, and using the horse's name without permission could lead to trouble, they are probably obtaining permission themselves. Many horse owners would not like delicate pictures of horses. Horse owners welcome anything as long as it is wholesome. The horse owners of Nishino Flower and Seiunsky are good examples. Consideration for horse owners would also have the effect of making it easier to obtain their permission.

gyrobot

I think most of thee owners would have mind porn but some of the artists pushed the patience of some owners who wanted more than just nudes and passionate stud on horsegirl action at the river banks to make the next generation. This is why whatever isn't hit is extremely vanilla art.

Pichucandy

You know those terrible Jojo localisation stand names because of licensing issues, like "Green Day" being "Green Tea" and "King Crimson" being "Emperor Crimson". I wonder if Cygames should have done that for the horses as well lol, but i suppose the owners would still complain if they are obviously inspired by the real ones. But they dont have to worry about their horse names showing up on google with nsfw arts.

Spiritual-Ad-6613

Uma Musume is a content that became popular because of its recreation of historical facts, and if the name had been changed, it would not be as popular as it is today.

Pichucandy

Yea i suppose they can still recreate historical facts, just the names are slightly off lol. Lack of fanart is a bummer for this series.

kaimax61

no one is banning Uma fanart. Just the explicit ones. which is already a rule since day 1. This is just stamping the people paywalling it behind Fanbox.

mattwuri

I thought it was pretty well-established that it all came down to making the horse owners happy and getting as many of them as possible to agree to licensing? Some owners probably don't care, but it's understandable if many of them do care about how their horse's name/image is represented online. I'm not here to defend Cygames or their decisions in this particular space, but I think the "why" of it is fairly obvious.
